Brawl is an incredible childhood game, especially since back then I saw those characters and I was like “Who are these guys? What are their games like?” and then growing up to play their games and find out, cool feeling
I always got smacked around a lot in Subspace and the platforming occasionally gave me trouble, but it had a strange allure that just kept drawing me back.
JoeMavro Some characters just sucked to play as in Subspace because of their speed or lack of jumps and stuff. Like, if Subspace existed in Ultimate, playing as Joker would suck since his up special doesn’t really make him go up (without a ledge of course) and Incenroar is not only super slow, but also has a dumb recovery that would just get him killed.
I understand why it's the way it is, but I still to this day can only imagine and see the AU where Ultimate got a World of Light on the production scale of Subspace, but with no shoehorn post story secret characters like Wolf. Everyone is an integral part of the story from the get go. So many hours of content it may as well have been its own game. All at the base price. Ahh how glorious.
eh, maybe someday. Smash Bros ain't going anywhere, and it's unlikely they're going to repeat the licensing miracle that is Smash Ultimate, so future Smash Bros games are going to HAVE to find some other way to distinguish themselves.
When I taught a math class of high schoolers this last Fall 2019, I purposefully tell them that Brawl is my favorite Smash to both get a rouse out of the "hardcore" players but also to give this game some much needed love. Everything you said in this video is what captured MY Junior year of high school with Smash Dojo, Sonic's reveal, and all the hype for the game. I couldn't agree more. At 28 years old, I still hold really fond memories of this game and love to celebrate what it meant and not necessarily what it is. Thanks for making this video Alax!
I definitely have lots of fond memories revolving around Brawl. I loved getting up every morning to check the Smash Dojo for any new reveals, had a blast seeing the story unfold in Subspace Emissary, and so many times I had fun playing the game with my friends in both casual and competitively-minded ways. Objectively Brawl is far from the best in the series, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't have the biggest impact on me despite my being with the series from the start.
I think one of the things that really sets Brawl apart from the rest of the series is that it felt... complete? The cast was fleshed out and reasonably unique from one another, 35* fighters didn’t feel bloated or feel like there was under/over-representation, Subspace Emissary made the single player stand alongside multiplayer in equal weight, the plethora of (quality) side content (stage builder, masterpieces, co-op content, etc.), and the consistent aesthetic (if a tad drab) through and through. No other game in the series really hits all these criteria at all or even in the same way that Brawl managed.
Exactly. Brawl felt like Smash Bros. at it's peak. It had a near-perfect roster (only overrepresention was one too many Star Fox characters; would have dropped Falco for Villager) that has aged very well and doesn't have too many clones, a great amount of new stages (every Smash since has replied on returning stages to fill up the stage count), great Single-player content, awesome Adventure Mode that actually takes advantage of the best thing about a crossover (character interaction), and just so much love and attention to detail. Smash 4 was gimped by being split into two games, never being able to reach it's full potential because of Smash 3DS. And Ultimate may have every character and nearly every stage, but it's lacking in a lot of other areas. Can it truly be considered "Ultimate"?
@@MagcargoMan Unfortunately not, the game might as well represent the depressing undertone of the loss of what made the games what they were as Sakurai had to make yet another smash bros game through Iwata's death wish. Sakurai will no longer have the IP one day just like how his son Kirby is no longer in his care (And being retconned by an overcomplicated plot that will also throw away whatever simple premise the Kirby series was built on)
@The Legend 27 Returns to RUclips Kirby wasn't supposed to be overly complex, while Planet Robobot is my favorite game, it basically turns the Kirby series into a fanfiction and it doesn't get any better. If you've played Kirby's adventure or any of the classic Sonic titles you'd know that storytelling and world-building was based on what you see and not what they tell you.
@The Legend 27 Returns to RUclips Show don't tell, is very much present in Kirby's Dreamland and Kirby's Adventure and Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 and even Subspace Emissary in Brawl. The reason it is relevant is because it shows how carefully the series is designed. I compare both Sakurai and Naka since they had lost control of their series when they stopped designing it. It will generally mean losing the original vision and intention it would have otherwise retained if they were still leading the design of their IPs.
Brawl was my favorite it surpassed 64 and Melee instantly. 4 I loved for sure but Brawl still won. But Ultimaye did eventually pass it. But only a little
@@Sean-D78 I get that. But when melee came out it definitely was better than 64. Honesty every game has undeniably been a bettergame. The people who only love melee to this day are honestly stupid and are stuck in melee because they cant win in any other smash becaus they learned melees jank mechanics and dont want to learn anything new.
Melee's competitive gameplay is *New glitch to use to beat people up which requires you to press an extremely precise button combination and make new players unable to catch up to us* Every other game is *get good and you'll win*
Hey let's also remember that Brawl opened the absolute Wild West that was modding for the game By 2011 it was basically an open source game for people to play with.
My first smash bros game was smash bros brawl I was playing it with my sister and my nephew back in 2012 good times!!! And also that's the game were I got my main mr game and watch so I started playing him more on the wii then the wii broke but a few years later and I play mr game and watch again on the 3ds and the wii u and yeah ultimate is here and I'm still playing Mr game and watch (i'm sad they removed the box with a bomb.)
I remember when I was pretty little, I was at my cousins' for some holiday, and saw that they were playing Smash Bros Melee in their basement. I remember being amazed because I thought that Samus was Master Chief and the beam swords were light sabers. Those were simpler times.
The roster, the modes, The small demos, the trophies with detailed origins and back story , the musics, the stickers, the website. No other smash bros comes close to what Brawl brought contentwise. I love Ultimate, but put aside the crazy roster, its mostly a balanced fighing/platformer/party game. Brawl was broken... but it was THE Nintendo encyclopedia, and i actually got a lot of my knowledge and interest for all the Nintendo franchises because of it.
I know it's different times, but when I was kid playing melee after playing smash 64 for 2 years, and started unlocking new fighters randomly not having any glue who they are. I will never get that kind of excitement ever again. When I first saw ganondorf in melee having no clue or hints he was in there I nearly shit my pants.
Brawl was the turning point for Smash cause it introduce guest characters from third party games like Snake form Metal Gear Solid and Sonic form Sonic the Hedgehog
"The bad one" while still being better than the predecessors because it has more and better characters and features and let's admit it, you all had fucking fun with it.
When's the last time you played Brawl and enjoyed it? Same with Smash 4 honestly Melee is really the only one that's fun to go back to. You can watch the Brawl cutscenes online
Lilly I’ve played brawl recently, grew up with it, still fun... I’ve never played melee and I’m sure that’s fun too. Stop trying to force opinions on people. Besides Ultimate is really the only one worth playing right now.
Lilly lol Melee is a broken janky mess. Ppl only like it because of how broken, competitive and speedy it is. Brawl set the stage for what Super Smash Bros is today. You Melee fanboys can keeping obsessing over the console but at least acknowledges the other games and what they did good with
Narwhal 42 you speaking facts, Melee fanboys are so close minded, just cuz you like the game don’t mean you should force your opinions on other ppl and make them ditch the Smash games they grew up with to end up playing your broken mess of a game
I think one of my fondest memories of brawl was all the cool and funny brawl machinima and animations that people made back when youtube wasn't as big as it is now.
Probably never since Sakurai hates his custscenes getting spoiled. And before anyone says " That was long time ago. It probably won't happen again", look at what happened with World of Light. Same thing happened. People tried to leak it. I think that is going to keep Sakurai away from doing Subspace stuff in Smash ever again.
5:15 Link has an extra Master Sword in his sheath. If you want a closer look go to 5:48 or pause at 6:11-6:12. You're welcome. Also look at his sword hand.
I always went out of my way to check the dojo as a kid. The library, when visiting friends, at school, etc. God damn this series has a tight grasp on my heart and will NEVER let go. The day that Sonic was announced was the happiest moment from a video game. You didn’t talk about the story mode, however. That was a big new feature for the game!
I agree wholeheartedly. Brawl is THE defining Smash Bros moment in so many different areas. Ultimate might be the new defining Smash Bros GAME, but as a foundation for everything that came after, Brawl is borderline perfection
Brawl DOES have the greatest story mode, and does have 2 third-party characters that changed the series entirely, and has the sickest box art i have ever seen, but i still consider melee as the best smash brothers. It expanded smash movesets, made the game fast paced and competitive, and my only flaw with it is classic mode. Classic starts perfectly, stomping on goombas, escsaping brinstar, it was perfect. But they just destroyed perfect opportunities like fighting in a gameboy while there's a pokemon layout. What i mean is, i consider melee over most of thr smash games. The closest smash is probably ultimate. Hope you have a good day.
it's a game I remember so much ...I started playing it like about 10 years ago...it's not a perfect game but it was still amazing and very important even though melee was the game that helped establish smash bros aswell and add more and ultimate was mainly built off 4's foundatation you can't forget brawl's contribute to the series at all
I will never forget the day where my dad took away my Gameboy the day before Christmas and said I don’t need it anymore. I was sobbing and the floor crying. Then the next day, he pulls out this white ass box, and I was confused. He set it up, told me to sit down, gave me a controller and said try this. Super Smash Bros Brawl truly changed gaming for me. I will never ever forget what it did for me.
Subspace Emissary will always be fun for me at least. Something in Brawl that I miss was the CPU difficulties getting names, like "weak" or "puny", it was a nice touch. I like how Brawl has more modes too, I miss events and stuff.
I loved the relaxed setup with just you and cat chilling on the couch. Brawl was and still is one of my favorites, primarily because my brother and I could play almost everything together.
I wish that he used the clip for the Idiot Box episode of spongebob where everything squidward tries to watch has boxes in it for the snake reveal part
I think Brawl was the most ambitious Smash game, it just 'ahem' tripped in many aspects and the whole game suffered for it (especially in terms of gameplay).
I... have an extremely minor, probably insignificant complaint. I really loved this video, and I practically would never make comments nitpicking one specific thing about a video, but there’s just one thing that kind of messed with me while watching this video, and that’s the clips with altered coloration. Usually, it’s fine; messing with saturation or pallets isn’t that big a deal, but I felt like for some of them, they were on screen for too long and with nothing else to draw my attention to, and it felt, not just unnecessary, but... weird. At one point, I actually exited the full screen mode to see if it was my computer screen glitching. Again, I absolutely love this video alongside all the others you make, and I am absolutely not an editor of any kind. All the other editing choices and such in this and all your other videos are on point. This one in particular just... poked at me, and I felt like I should point it out. Hope you keep making great content!
I feel really nostalgic now. I wish I could go back through time to when smashdojo had that trailer and tracks from the game. Back when I was in middle school.

Subspace Emissary is still one of my favorite experiences out of the entire series. Brawl was a big part of my childhood
JoeMavro
Some characters just sucked to play as in Subspace because of their speed or lack of jumps and stuff. Like, if Subspace existed in Ultimate, playing as Joker would suck since his up special doesn’t really make him go up (without a ledge of course) and Incenroar is not only super slow, but also has a dumb recovery that would just get him killed.
I remember after unlocking all characters and watching the intro made me feel proud seeing all characters faceing the sunset
“brawl is actually a good game!”
i’ve been waiting for this moment for my entire life
I understand why it's the way it is, but I still to this day can only imagine and see the AU where Ultimate got a World of Light on the production scale of Subspace, but with no shoehorn post story secret characters like Wolf.
As someone who went to high school in the days of Sm4sh I would’ve challenged you on the spot
I can't believe that Brawl got everything right minus the gameplay, thankfully, Project M brings the game to perfection.
I played Brawl again after a couple years and I have to say its actually pretty fun.
Not as good as ultimate, but still a pretty enjoyable experience.
Brawl was my favorite it surpassed 64 and Melee instantly. 4 I loved for sure but Brawl still won. But Ultimaye did eventually pass it. But only a little

I started with brawl when i went to a cousin's house
Sunset Sullivan And Brawl still has the best story mode.
Seath brawl still has the best playable content outside of the roster and stages.
The only thing that holds Brawl back is the gameplay, everything else is great
it's a game I remember so much ...I started playing it like about 10 years ago...it's not a perfect game but it was still amazing and very important even though melee was the game that helped establish smash bros aswell and add more and ultimate was mainly built off 4's foundatation you can't forget brawl's contribute to the series at all
The boxes ytp joke, you missed the “I give up” that synchs up with the metal gear music

Man, your videos are great writing wise, but that editing and references
Oh boy, really entertains my soul
