- A look at the history behind the LEGO Ideas Pop-Up Book (set 21315) and a comparison between the final set and the original Ideas submission model.
The LEGO Ideas Pop-Up Book is now available for purchase from LEGO's online store: bit.ly/pubsah
Conceptually, not much has change from when this project was first conceived to the final version of the set being produced, but quite a few little things have changed. In this video we take a look at those changes, including the evolution of the main pop-up mechanism, the removal of the clasp, and the changes made to the appearance of the model.

@@RisenKrum I would love the cemetary creepy lego scene briefly shown, fantastic present for Halloween or gothic style friends.

The fact that this kit encourages creativity so actively is awesome. I bet the Lego designer who worked on this must have loved it.
Greg M but he made it...
Greg M except grant
Doesnt lego itself actively encourage creativity?
@@AemVR before being sold, a lego designer employee can modify creations to make sure they meet a certain standard or simply add more to the set.
Lego: puts decorative tiles on the front
Also Lego: doesn't tile the top...
I definitely prefer the aesthetic of LEGO's green/brown design, but I am sad they removed those studs on the inner spine, as that front section feels very empty when the book is open.
Agreed, I was sad to see the clasp go too, but at least there I understand they probably wanted the outer edges of the book cover to be perfectly clean and uninterrupted, so I can see why they had decided against it in the final version, even though it was a very functional element - and an added detail as well.
The studs on the inside of the spine are still a mystery to me. Would anything at all interfere with the folded insert if it was placed in there? I wonder... J should test that in his mod of the set.
Hope those dark green side studded bricks aren't so expensive online. I'm gonna do that once I get this set and replace some of the parts.
I personally prefer the design of the one with the brown cover. Nice use of gold parts! Though it’s not my favorite design, I will be picking up the official set when I can :)
AWM LEGO films on the bright side, most LEGO models are customizable.
Indeed! There are lots of things that could be changed with the official set, if you so wish them to be. I’d like to make a few of my own pop up stories to go in it.
Great comparison, which shows us things we might otherwise have missed in the evolution of the project. Also helpful info about the hinge hole etc for if we want to build our own custom inserts. 👍
Cool to see them all in a line!
Super fun going through the process with you Jason.
Dear Jason, thank you very much for this very informative comparison. I will to build in the clasp definitely when my book arrives. It is really a pity, that LEGO deleted this in the final product.
Yes, I was also very sad to see the clasp go and I am definitely looking forward to your next video so that I can include it once I pick up the book. I didn't know the Grant's original version is much thinner.
This is such a great set for kids. Encourages creativity, is educational and hopefully promotes reading. Thanks for sharing the process and your opinions.
There's no reading to be done there... The manual yeah
I'm amazed at how much the model has changed. It's a good thing that the designer used window pieces to give leeway for the jutting hinges, as well as other elements. The clasp would've been a nice element to keep to make the book feel "secure" as you said. I'm really excited to get my hands on this set! By the way, what was the LEGO Pop-Up Book signing like for you? It must've been fun to sign people's sets. Have a good day! Regards, Joseph cheeseinthepie. 10/30/2018
Out of curiosity, why was the clasp removed in the design process? you clearly were quite fond of it
Not really sure, the final design was out of our hands.
This is really cool. Great review! Loved to see the idea’s origins. I’m thinking about making my own pop-up set so this was very inspiring.
I liked how the bean stalk has a technique that is normally impossible with typical pop-up books.
Your design was so effective but Lego made it even better
In some parts - yes, in others, not so much. Not including the clasp was a miss, as well as not placing any studs on the inside of the spine. Minor things, but unfortunate.
@@stuchly1
I agree
@@stuchly1 This might be a stupid question, but I am unable to figure it out; how the hell did he make both sides of the clasp be tiled? How is there not one side that shows the bottom of the plates? :O
@@Languste
There's a peice that has studs. And is tiled on the bottom
So instead of a anti stud attachment. It's smooth instead
@@ogingocni6850 Interesting, thanks! c: Can you send me a bricklink link or smth similar, because I looked for it online and did not find anything o.0
Very nice for you to do vids I love seeing how it got evolve like a little Easter eggs I also like the clasp idea I think Lego was trying to keep the pieces count down lol
Been waiting for this video
I watched your video. I liked the book very much. So ingenious and simple! And I bought the book last week. The book inspires you to create fairy tales. Thanks!
Awesome, I'm glad you like it!
They should make add ons so ou could have a Graveyard, and more that could add on the the original lego model.
The official version looks better on the outside but I prefer the original pop up house and totally agree about the path; it adds a really nice sense of depth.
Wow! I didn't you it was you who created the pop up book! Congratulations!
They are just amazing...
This is such an awesome design 🤗😍
As a grown up, I prefer the darker, mature aesthetics of your original models. Was a cyberpunk theme (ex. Blade Runner, Total Recall, Ghost In The Shell, etc.) ever created?
I got an ad before this and it showed the entire Lego movie
What? I got an ad for rise of kingdom or whatever and it was coffin dance.
It would be awesome if we could get a jungle ruins or the humpty dumpty!
This is unbelevable😱
I actually liked legos green design more but its sad that they removed the studs and the closing thing. Especially the closing thing would make it more steady.
WOW!
I really love the Jack and the beanstalk design
Cool
Very cool to see how the project progressed! Congrats once again to you and Grant, this is a phenomenal set!
The jack in the bean stock set on the book with the worlds smallest lego figure looks so little and i would use that tiny figure to pretend on every thomas and friends episode
Need a three little pigs pop up
I never new this existed wow
This might be my favourite ever LEGO set... It's genius!
Are there any how-to videos or instructions for some of the 8 interiors hiding somewhere on file? Specifically the steampunk/gears...? This popup book set has had me obsessed since I came across it this summer! (Mom playing with grown children's old totes full of bricks!) So of course I found your now retired set on ebay with least-at-the-time but still considerable mark up price - w/free shipping! ;) I just found this video with good shots of past ideas but I have NO understanding (yet!) of the gear magic build! Raided my son-in-laws skeleton collection and pulled off a decent cemetery fence insert. Playing with 12-post-wide book pages and still have it function. Took several attempts but I did it! Going to need better collection of Bricks!
I’m in NY on vacation and I JUST bought the set minutes ago. I’m most likely not gonna build it until I get home, but looks fantastic!
I wanna make these and put them in a bookshelf
amazing!
Sooo your the designer of the lego set?
I wonder why they decided to remove the lock feature in the final design. That was such a cool addition!
Awesome 😱🐼👍
Is it just the clasp you would add back, or any of the other changes as well?
I'd also add the studs back to the interior of the spine. I'm actually just about to post a video detailing some of the changes I made to my own copy of the set, as well as a tutorial on adding a clasp back in.
When I was a kid we used to have enought to buy some legos but nowdays its just too fucking expensive! I'm sure as hell not expending over 30 hours worth of brazilian minimum wage on one of those sets.
FUCK LEGO!!!!
JK I just ordered the Book an cannot wait :) I was hoping to find the instructions/part list for all the different inserts you had for your original pop-up, are they anywhere on your website?
Sorry, no, I never put together instructions for them. I will probably redo a few for the new book over the coming months, though.
JK Brickworks any updates in time for your Contest? I am really interested in making new stories for mine, but I love taking LDD/IO files and starting from there.
Yours would be amazing to help kickstart my creative juices :-)

That is a good Idea 😮

So why didn't they do it on the anniversary
I truly love this build! Thank you for sharing its evolution as you guys created it. I can't wait to build my own adventures within and also see what clever designs the community at large will develop. A+!
I love that I think "I'd wanna put the clasp back in" and you almost respond to the thought "I'll show you how to put the clasp back in".
Congratulations on having Lego adopt your design. Great Work!
Hi
This is so awesome Jason. I'm excited for this one to become available to the public.
You would think that TLG would have implemented some kind of hasp or locking mechanism. I thought that was a great idea. Love this model and can’t wait to get it
Wow
Okay, but, I have questions
WHY
HOW
WHERE İS THE LEGOS
I'm glad you'll have a guide to add the clasp. That's a really great part of it, that I don't understand why it would be removed.
And now the shelves are full of Disney Storybook Princess Books.
Jack and the bean stalk mechanism is brilliant
It looks way to epic eveb the design kf the book. I want to have so much lego like you.
i kinda liked the lock, too bad it's removed
Very cool. But them taking out those studs in the center really is too bad
Still 22 days to Christmas... but I want this set now...
Yes yes!!!!! You are best
Can lego bring b this back😢
november 1st is my birthday
How tho?
Congratulations! Well doen both of you.
i bought it, and it is worthy.
I love that amazing quality !
How much does it cost to
I love the cemetery and the steampunk structure.
Hey JK, is it safe to replace some of the book spine pieces with some side studded bricks?
Yeah, for sure, in my video for adding the clasp back in I'll show where you can add them back in too.
@@JKBrickworks OK, I'm excited for that one.
