      Since having sex outside your species is called "bestiality", that particular brand of sexual deviancy is apparently OK in the 24th century... because that green girl (among others) definitely is not human... just ask Kirk.
      And Spock is, at best, technically a mule. Or, at worst, owing to Vulcan superiority, closer to the offspring of a human and a gorilla (with Vulcans as the humans and humans as the gorillas).

    I really enjoy how he takes a strange liking to data, and quickly begins treating him entirely normally. Doesn't get hung up on the "robot" thing at all, and just wants to party and play football with him. It's not curiosity about his nature as an android, but instead seems to be some kind of simple appreciation for Data's straight forward and 100% genuine way of relating with people.

    I'm told there's some short stories that follow all three of these people. Stan actually does become a big hit singer and sparks a revival in country and folk music, and eventually becomes sort of a "Frank Sinatra" type entertainer during the Dominion War. He also kicks his addictions. Oppenhouse fittingly becomes the Federation Ambassador the the Ferengi Alliance, and the woman who's name I can't remember joins up with Temporal Affairs and becomes a counselor for other humans that suddenly find themselves in the 24th century. This includes the crew of the USS Bozeman from "Cause and Effect."

    Star Trek isekai episodes (or portal stories) allow for the writers to explore more of the universe/lore. Modern people don't normally spend time talking about internal combustion engines and fuel chemistry in their everyday lives, but something like this allows the writer to have someone ask about everyday items for the setting.

    I wasn't the biggest fan of the season one episodes, mostly because they were still kind of coming up to speed on their character development and writing stories that were a little edgier. But this was one of the better episodes. I liked the concept of discovering people in cryosleep, but just plain ol' people rather than Khan's super soldiers. It was a bit like a first contact style episode, but between 24th century humans and earlier humans. But it also had the little gamesmanship between the Enterprise and a Romulan ship. Lots of interesting moving pieces in the story, all in all.

ALL of them were intriguing in their own way (for me, especially Stan). This got me thinking (while reading the comments) how my favorite of the feature films made of Star Trek series were the two that dealt with sort of similar scenarios, reversed: The Voyage Home when the original series characters go to San Francisco and deal with whales, etc. and the TNG movie "First Contact." Time travel stories are generally my favorite type of science fiction so this fits right in in a sense.

      Very few people I interact with still "watch TV". Yes, they may stream a video here and there but that's not the same thing. Streaming a video you are specifically choosing what you want to entertain you, not the other way around, which is how network TV always operated. It is already vastly different than in the era this series ran, where the typical family home was watching network TV. These days, it's about the household selecting choosing what form of media they want.

    really wanted to have an extended episode on this. does anyone know if any of the books delve into the things raised in this episode more? they did a good job, but there was so much more that could've been discussed with all of this. for one, the wealthy guy might have enjoyed learning about the Ferengi.

    • @ensignmjs7058
      @ensignmjs7058 6 лет назад +4

      b. free, the "wealthy guy" does get mentioned in a novel. He becomes an ambassador for the Federation. I don't remember the novel as I read it 20 years ago. The funny thing is that I do remember that when meeting Picard again he ordered a Coke or a Dr. Pepper or some other carbonated drink from the replicator. That stuck with me because he said he had to program it into the replicator. I assume it's because it has no nutritional value so a starship wouldn't replicate it and because the recipe was so old. Also, because it was "fizzing," the novel version of Picard thought it looked like it came from a chemistry experiment.
      I read somewhere else that he is mentioned in a second novel. I would imagine the character does rebuild a reputation for himself because that's the kind of man he is. But I don't think that, working for the Federation, he became "rich" again. His "wealth" would come from respect for his accomplishments, perks for being an ambassador, and self-improvement.

    • @bfree-gm6xw
      @bfree-gm6xw 6 лет назад +3

      Yes, I found out that all three appear in a couple of different novels. The wealthy guy was ambassador to the Ferengi! Which I immediately thought of after watching the clip. Later he goes on to serve as Economic Secretary for the Federation or something like that. The woman goes on to serve as a counselor for time-shifted peoples. The musician, well, I couldn't find anything out there. There are two moments that were interesting in the show for me: where he asks for a copy of the WSJ, and the other guy asks to watch TV. And in both cases -- nope, we do not have those on the Enterprise.
