I think the best part about the last scene is that Worf will forever wonder _what the hell_ Data was talking about because it's just _too awkward_ to bring up.
Would be true too, they have artificial gravity so it's really not a problem in that day and age, but lack of gravity does have the tendency to cause.... general sagging. Even for the great Worf. And like these guys in the early days woulda been spending years in space with no gravity.
I swear, Data *knows* he can get away with this kind of shit, he just has some kind of weird subroutine in his code that Soong put in that gave him the desire to occasionally screw with people. Anyone else screwing around with a Chinese finger trap while briefing the Captain would've gotten a stern talking-to, at the very least.
i feel like brent spiner wasnt fully in character in the first and second deasons, bc u can clearly see data smiling with the finger trap, showing emotions. it lead to some very funny moments, out of character but also funny
Yup. Same with Data, being a walking encyclopedia, not recognizing the word "aphrodisiac." I think he was trying to play dumb in front of Tasha. "How would that help sex? Tasha, I will require your assistance in some scientific experiments later."
Picard was very clearly messing with Data, since he knows what a finger trap is and it's obvious on first glance that Data doesn't know the trick to it.
Yes.. but I believe that Data perceived that using brute force would've destroyed the puzzle to the extent that the solution to becoming Unstuck wouldve been Lost. We see him being very practical, when he carefully unwrapped his presents at his birthday party, so that the paper could be recycled and used again.
As a computer scientist, I could actually see Data having these sorts of gaps in his knowledge. As a cyberneticist living in obscurity, Soong probably had all sorts of scientific knowledge that he had collected to give his creations, but ended up hacking together the basic common knowledge stuff as it came up. There are actually projects underway to try to avoid problems like this, creating enormous common knowledge databases. It'll be interesting to see how it turns out.
I imagine it's called the "DUHHH !" database of facts so basic and obvious, humans don't even give thought to it. And that's a problem if programmers don't apply it to systems.
I think its more targeted than that in TNG. Its not merely common knowledge that Data lacks. Specifically, knowledge of overtly sexual information needed to understand many crude jokes in the series. Also deceitfulness. He didn't know the word "sneak" for crying out loud
I'm pretty sure his database contained large dictionaries. 'Aphrodisiac' would be in the future equivalent of the OED and Wikipedia. He didn't know because the writers thought it was a funny bit. That's all.
Finger puzzle outsmarts Data? Totally plausible. One of our Nuclear Mechnical instructors brought a yo yo to class as a training aid. We watched him untie the knot and retie it around his finger. It took several tries but he finally got it to fit his finger. One of the other students finally asked the question most of us wanted to ask. Why didn't he just put the string through the loop it came with and simply tighten it around his finger. He looked at us like what are talking about? We showed him and he said oh. It never occurred to him.
+atombot89 It's not that he couldn't easily rip through finger puzzle if he wanted to. It's that a simple device perplexes him. He's not really intelligent. He's a computer that just happens to be able to walk around. But he's a living computer that is capable of learning.
I love how, after the solution to the finger-trap was shown to him, he wasn't embarrassed or ashamed: just amazed. It was the most intriguing thing to him in that moment.
That clip from Insurrection was hilarious. I can't help but wonder if Data whimsically decided to act on a "trolling" sub-routine once he overheard Crusher and Troi speaking.
I love that Data is an android with amazing analytical abilities, almost unsurpassed clarity of vision when asked about very difficult subjects both technical and philosophical yet discovers the entire world through the simplicity and wonder of a child. I really love that “Uh-huh,” at the end. Humanity, even after such increases in technology, will continue to be human, and that’s a prime example right there.
@@froschreiniger2639 I mean, why is Picard bald? It's obviously their cultural norm for 24th century humans to accept physical signs of ageing rather than changing them.
The fact that data is stuttering implies that he is actually concentrating his entire computational power to the problem of getting his fingers unstuck, and is not finding the solution. Amazing.
Love the analogy here. The Enterprise and the Ferengi are both stuck together in this predicament, and the only way to get out is to work together. Just like the Chinese Finger Puzzle.
Data was created to have various gaps in his knowledge specifically so he would have to interact with others and learn. It could also be that certain words and phrases are just not in common use by that time, so Data would not be aware. There's also the belief that there's a lot of information Data has available and just doesn't have at ready access but becomes more so as he learns. In a way like how we would have to think about our phone numbers but are able to recall it more easily through repetition.
As soon as Data had access to information, he would learn it and he had plenty of opportunity to learn whilst at the Academy. It does seem an obvious oversight though, seeing as we know Data is proficient in all terrestrial Earth languages and many alien languages too, it kinda jars to hear him say that.
Soong gave him a lot of knowledge, but he was only human, he couldn't literally program him with every single detail of the universe. I would assume most of Data's actual infobanks came from his experiences in Starfleet.
There is a lot to focus on in that perfume scene but how about Data saying “what’s perfume for?” and Yar, arms crossed, chillin in the corner chimes in with “sEX”
