fun fact the show writers said in an interview that after this battle happened with 001, el slipped into a coma because of how much trauma she experienced which made her lose most of her memories and her ability to speak :( and the gate closed in that time but brenner used her for years to try and study the upside down and open the gate and he basically made her relive all her trauma without her knowing until she finally gained a slight memory about the tunnel 001 showed her and used it to escape... her story is so heartbreaking. i hope she burns that lab to the ground after she gets her powers back

Dr Brenner didn’t know about the upside down though, well he didn’t know about the Demogorgon and didn’t know what the gate was, back in season 1. So he most definitely didn’t know about the Upside Down.
Man I just wanted to cry anytime we've seen her on screen this season. All the lab scenes were her reliving her memories, all the shit she had to endure when she was so tiny. Anytime the showed the reflection of her a little older and her tiny self made my heart crumble. I just want her and Will to heal and be at peace.
When you guys asked "Where he get his powers from?" it made me realize something. That conversation Hopper had about Kids of war veterans being born with deformities.... Victor Creel was in the war.

Wrong war. Hopper worked with Agent Orange in Vietnam, Victor Creel was in France during WW2.
I think it might be related to his mom somehow. When he was monoliguing (can't remember with who) he said that his parents did horrible things and that his mother somehow knew or thought he was the one making the house hell, basically. Maybe something similar to what happened to El's mom

When Creel was talking about his family, he mentioned that the son was "the first to pick up on it" and "sensitive". I think that was the first clue we got to him being Vecna.

@@lilmanq7746 It was super minor, enough to not really make you think anything of it when watching it through the first time. It was the first dot that connected kid-001-Vecna, albeit small. Someone being "sensitive" often means they have gifts and/or a connection that isn't natural.

I thought it was great how 001 manipulated Eleven to better tap into her potential by channeling anger and sadness, something forbidden by Papa, because that kind of technique created 001, but what gave her the edge over 001 in her fight with him was her channeling the love she felt from her mother.
THIS! It was really clever because all season long we saw her struggling with her anger and her worst impulses. They almost set her up for a possible villain origin story just like 001, especially since they implied she was the one to kill all those kids. But in the end, she’s nothing like 001 because she’s fueled by love, not hate. Such a great addition to her character’s lore.

@@viennasavage9110 the people who have escaped it, Eleven and Max, channeled love, Max with her friends and Lucas (past relationship), and Eleven with her mother. If it was trauma, Max would not have escaped.
@@Shant3ll998 Max used music, not love. Max dosent have powers. These are 2 different situations. Eleven didnt "escape", she overpowered him with her abilities thanks to the boost she got from her trauma. 001 said as much to her, that her trauma is the key to her powers. Thats the entire arc, thats why they're restoring her memories.

it all ties back together too like in episode 4 after max escaped vecna she said he looked surprised- which was because he saw max's memories with el and was shocked and thats why he let her run away so easily unlike with chrissy where he chased her when she tried to run from him. he knows that max is connected to el and knows that somehow she will lead him to her.

What? All of what you said isn’t true at all. Chrissy never tried running away from Vecna (well she did try, she just didn’t when he was heading towards her). Vecna didn’t want Max to escape, Vecna didn’t see max’s memories of eleven.
@@Jelbot I remember she said something like Vecna was surprised that Max was in that place, I assumed it was the red place which is a memory of Vecna (the house) and not Max’s memories/traumas.
Nancy also went to this red place and she saw more memories from Vecna.
Me and my dad thought 001 was just like Anakin too. From killing kids to becoming a ruthless monster. There's a lot of Star Wars like things in ST which makes sense since the 80's was Star Wars time.
He reminds me more of young Palpatine than Anakin. Palpatine was a psychopath and he massacred his own family as a child.

music doesn't really neutralize vecna's powers, it just gives a pathway back to the real world. the reason Max was able to escape, imo, had more to do with her realizing that her friends are all wanting her to come back & her realizing that she still had reasons to fight for her life. the flashback she had of all the positive memories was an indication of that, but before that point, she was still depressed and ready to give up on her life.. preparing letters for everyone etc.
that whole episode was so powerful because it's a good message for all people struggling with mental health issues.

So the music doesn't neutralize Vecna's power exactly, the music saves the victim... Music can evoke strong emotions and nostalgia in people so it makes sense. The asylum doctor said it helped his patients and Victor Creel mentioned hearing an angel sing & that brought him out of his trance.
I think Henry Creel/#1 may have just been born with his powers and later Brenner was trying to duplicate it bc he was scared of #1 and couldn't control him. I'm wondering if Brenner used Creels DNA to literally duplicate him and 11 was finally the one strong enough but also GOOD, not evil.
The way i interpret it, is that 001/Vecna power, is to amplify his victim's despair, guilt, sadness, until they essentially no longer want to live, they "join" him so to speak. Music on the other hand allows the victim to also experience happy emotions and memories, which then allows them to resist his curse.
Then again, it's only my interpretation of it.

@@rohangupte3545 My theory is that 001 got his powers from a mixture of chemicals gasses that his father inhalated during WW2. Hopper did a whole speech about how the aftermath of the inhalations of chemicals gasses caused all the children of him and his squadron to die. Maybe Victor Creel inhalated something as well, (He particularly stated that they moved in the house after his long years in the army) and also the years fit together: Henry and his sister seemed teenagers, like 11 to 13 years, and they moved in the house in 1959, exactly 14 years after the end of WW2.
@@gabriele9714 The chemicals hopper is referring to are specially agent orange from specifically the Vietnam war, the effects and birth deformities from agent orange use in the war are a real thing that is still a point of contention with Vietnam war veterans to this day
I figured Henry Creel could be 001 so I was pleasantly surprised at Peter being Henry aka 001. I thought Vecna was an ancient being instead of a person who got clapped like that. I thought the Creel family was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time and somehow being so close to the upside down and surviving is why the lab people took him.
So was his name in the lab Peter? I guess I don't remember him having a name before
I thought along a similar train. I figured out Henry was 001/Vecna the second we were introduced to him but I thought the Mind Flayer was possessing him to do everything. Finding out he was doing it on his own terms was the plot twist for me.
There's also the plot twist of the way El banishes One, it's the same thing she did to the Demogorgon, this is her first showing of biokinesis

Music for the most part always brings out good feelings in people, 001 never had any type of happy thoughts or anything like that which is why 11 was also able to over come him, his abilities are all powered by rage and hate.

As for 001 having powers: I imagine it was the same with Eleven. It was inherited. El's mom was part of an experiment done by the government that affected her offspring, When Brenner got knowledge that El's mom was pregnant he planned El's abduction from birth, framing it as a miscarriage (that's why he was in the birthing room). All the children from the lab were born gifted. Brenner just collected them all. So One was probably born gifted (maybe one of his parents underwent the experimentations as well.) but was exceptionally stronger as well.

remember hopper talking about men in the war coming back home and trying to start families but they’re children coming out stillborn, or missing limbs, amongst other things due to chemical warfare. victor creel was also in the war and the affects on him could’ve been sent to henry when he was born.

The music helps a person escape Vecna because it reaches parts of the brain that speech can’t (which is based on reality), therefore it provides a possible escape-a reminder to the victim there is an outside world beyond the living nightmare Vecna shows them. It has no effect negative or positive on Vecna himself- it’s for the victim. As for where his power comes from, I’m assuming he was just born with it, like the mutants in X-men, and Hawkin’s lab used 001’s cells to enhance the children of the mothers taking part in Brenner’s experiments. Just a theory…

I personally hope that the Mind Flayer was there before Vecna because I like the idea of an eldritch being in the Upside Down rather than a former human creating it. Plus it would make sense cause those vines were there when Eleven banished him. Plus ultimately the Mind Flayer wants what Henry Creel wanted as a kid so it makes sense that he would be his general in a sense
In the back of my head, I thought it was really weird how they gave a close up of everyone getting taken out, but they kinda brushed past the little boy. I expected the strange guard to be referring to himself when he was talking about 001, and figured he probably was also Vecna. But him being that same little boy somehow slipped right past me.
Hype for Volume 2. 4 hours of content incoming. Really hoping they do something big with the California cast because their screentime has been really nonexistent compared to everyone else. papa isn’t el’s father, in season 2 they showed that clip and explained that brenner was there because he knew el was special so he took her from that room.
Vecna stated that his Mom knew and despised him for it. He mentioned that she called a doctor, which probably was Brenner.

My theory is his power came from Brenner. We know that 001 said his mother had done awful things. Maybe she had experimented on people or was experimented on, when she was pregnant, which is why she knew to contact Brenner when weird things started happening.

It’s like when El is searching for people and she goes to that black space where she can see certain things. It’s like Vecna has been able to modify his ‘black space’ to look like hell. But neither of them (Max and Vecna) were actually there - Vecna was in the upside down and Max was in the cemetery

I think 001/Henry helped 008/Kali escape but she couldn't get him out too. El has his telekinetic powers but 008 has his psychic powers to control what others see. Kali whole focus is destruction and she hates Brenner/Papa. I remember how she told El to use her anger to tap into more power. 008 could have gotten that from 001.
I also think El was able to overpower 001 by a happy/loving memory of her mom at birth saying she loved her.
This show just knows how to introduce seemingly different storylines and make them all come together perfectly.

P.S. Brenner knew about 001’s powers because his mother sought Brenner’s help to cure her son. That’s what ultimately pissed 001 off enough to kill her. He mentions that when he awoke from his coma, he was in the care of the doctor he had been trying to avoid. I figure Brenner examined him at some point when his mom asked for help, and began to have suspicions that this kid had paranormal abilities that were confirmed when 001 killed his family. Brenner’s a scientist, he’s naturally curious enough to want to explore something he doesn’t understand. Maybe it will turn out he did know something more about the upside down, but if not I don’t think it has to go any deeper than 1) He was curious, and 2) He wanted to weaponize 001 and the others against the Russians.

People always ask where 001 got his powers from, no one even kinda mentions maybe he's born with them (which he was) It's like mind blowing how the origins of his powers confuses people lol
Yea screw all that, I want to know how Kali Prasad got her powers. She is number 008 and the only other survivor of the onslaught besides 11. And that’s because she somehow escaped all by herself with her abilities which are somehow different from all 10 of the others including 001. They all only have psychic abilities to move things with there mind. 008 has the ability to implant things in peoples minds, whatever she wants basically controlling there brain. She’s so powerful with it that she was able to make a entire police squad think they were not seeing her or anyone else in the room like freakin Xavier or something. Why is her power different from everyone else and why is she also 20 years old? She’s like way older then all the other kids apart from 001. Well not way older but still she’s the oldest apart from 001. I mean how is nobody interested in her?? We see her for like one episode and that’s it but she seems super important. You can’t just not have her show up again at some point with such a powerful ability different from anyone else and also be the only other survivor apart from 11. It makes no sense. Like was 008 also a original who had the power at birth and that’s why hers is different from everyone else? Because all the other kids got there powers from 001. But did 008? Cause her power is different. Maybe there was a reason why she was kept away with 11 at times. 11 was watched closely because she was the strongest apart from 001 with the power 001 had. But 008 seemed to be watched closely too and I wonder if it’s because her power was her own or something.
I think 001 was born with powers, kind of like a Carrie situation, even tho her mama thought her powers came from the devil, she was born with em with no real explanation. U can call it evolution
Well the experiments were a way to train the mind and pull out the psychic potential. 001 was just unique that his mind already worked in the correct way for powers, and just needed to mature/age until his powers unlocked on their own.

It really is incredible how vecna the most powerful (besides the mindflayer) was El's first person to kill and even when vecna juiced up on everyone else she still sent him out. El is amazing honestly
El is gonna die, she doesn't fit in and only she can destroy the upside-down gateways. Not this season but the final season she is going to sacrifice herself so all of her friends can live.

Music can powerfully affect your mood. Dude feeds on negative emotions. Keeping your spirits high is your best psychic defense (in the show, as in real life).
TLDR: Its love
I think the antithesis of Vecna's power is love. I say its the antithesis because during his time in the regular world he relied on his hatred for how humanity functioned and that's what fueled his longing to escape an endless loop- which enhanced his powers. Even after being detained and out of practice for years, his hatred kept him at the top of his game and well ahead of the other 8 kids (008 escaped before this incident shown in season 2). Dr. Brenner is just a scientist from what I can see, he can't unlock the true powers of the kids nor do I think that it's his intent since he links true power with being like 001 so he wants a watered down version. Proof of this is that he is trying to get the kids to use their powers without using emotions, even things like revenge or acting out in malice towards another is punished (002 for example). But Vecnas hatred is deep, as it pulls from the outside world- a hatred that none of the other kids could have. 001 chose 011 because even amongst the kids that should have been the only family she had known, she didnt fit in- just like him. In 001's experience that is enough of a catalyst to allow her to tap into her deepest hatred, thus allowing her to be in the same realm of power as him - albeit slightly weaker because he believes his hatred runs even deeper than that. This is why he was able to easily subdue her when she tried using hatred to combat him. But what saved her wasnt a distant memory of hatred (finding out that her mother was alive and tried saving her- just to be dragged away to never be seen again), but an even further one- the first time gazing upon her mother and hearing that her mother loved her. 001 had the opposite done to him, his mother saw him as a monster (justified) and even if she attempted showing him love, with his idealism of being "the predator of an unjust world" he wouldnt be able to comprehend or even accept love from someone he saw as lesser than. This is also why he stated to 011 that hatred and sadness is the key to great power- because he had saw no other alternative. Flash forward to her charging up and with ease banishing this man to the shadow realm.
But this isnt the first time shes exhibited this amount of power, first time was in season 1 against the Demogorgon when she sees her friends trying to protect her in a dire situation. With this being the first time shes ever had friends, her love and the strong need to protect them is what gave her the edge after she had already exhausted her powers moments prior and couldn't even stand. She could've easily broken its neck like she did to literally everyone/everything else or straight up crush its brain, but thats not how it ended. Flash forward to Demogorgon (as well as herself) being banished to the shadow realm.(I also think that this Demogorgon is the same one that shows up in this season at the prison since all the lower Demogorgons were killed after the gate they came from closed including Dart which came from Will at the end of season 1. It would be weird if the Demogorgon died but 001 ended up in the upside down after the same attack. Note 011 also ended up in the upside down. So maybe the Demogorgon escaped when the Russians attempted to open the gate in season 2 which is what that cage was for...I could be wrong).
Anyway...
So love is both a gateway to 011's true power as well as 001's only weakness. His weakness is also exposed when trying to kill Max. Yes, music does reach a part of the brain that speech doesnt but I believe thats only half of it. Remember that it can't just be any song but it has to be your favorite song in order for it to work (which is one of Max's concerns that she will eventually hear the song so much that its no longer her favorite), but usually a song is your favorite because it ties to a strong emotion. While the song was playing she was still possessed and even started floating in the air, which is the count down for death. But, things changed after the song started evoking happy memories with the friends she had and the people she loved (note that Caleb showed up in multiple scenes). Max as we all know has no powers, but she was able to overpower Vecna (a 5 star general). Vecnas power allows him to reach into his victims naturally but in order to create a tear into the fabric of space and time (I think he got that idea from when 011 did it, or the Mindflayer got the idea from 011 and is using 001 to do the same thing), he again reaches from a deep hatred or sadness (trauma) because thats all he knows. With that being said, we all know 001 is going to get clapped yet again. Who knows he might even understand his short comings in the end since its literally a battle of the minds and the only person that could change him is his opposite.
Fun thing I noticed: When 001 exposes his tattoo and 011 grabs his arm, the 001 tattoo is facing the normal way but her 011 tattoo is showing reversed (obviously) as 110 which is the direct opposite. The 1's in her tattoo in that position fills out the 0's in his tattoo as well as his 1 fills out the 0 in hers making them complete. Through fighting him she gained a distant memory and became complete (albeit she forgets right after). So maybe this time this fight will make him complete...

Yellowjackets would be SUCH a good series for the guys to watch. There's only one season so far and they're currently working on the second season. With the twists and character decisions in that show, I think the guys would immediately enjoy it because it's not predictable and the casting between young and older characters is incredible.
I think if you go back to season 2, Brenner was doing experiments on people and Terry (El’s mom) was a test subject that didn’t know she was pregnant at the time. Pretty sure Brenner kept her close to see how El turned out.

I'll be completely honest: I have a sinking feeling that the Mind Flayer is something Vecna/001 created. It's powers are similar but with it lacking a physical body, it has a better ability to be a hive mind queen and possess others.

I am not sure how exactly Brenner found the other kids. But I think Vecna/001 implies that his mom was talking to a specialist to deal with him, and when he fell into the coma he woke up in the clutches of said specialist he'd been trying to avoid, aka Brenner/Papa.

He didn’t find them they explained it in the show😭 the same way he got 11 is how he got the other kids. After Brenner got 001 he tried to control him and his powers but realized he couldn’t. That’s when brenner started the experiments that a bunch of ppl participated in for money. He was trying to recreate 001 and he did.
His power was neutralized by the chip they put in his neck. He has nothing to do with the music, that is the way people can find a way out of vex as grasp. I want to know is Steve gets powers bc he found the spiders like little Henry did but he’ll use them to help El.
alot of people got the misconception that 001/Vecna created the upside down but that isnt true,the upside down existed ever since the universe was created for all we know and El only created the portal.The Mindflayer is still the manipulator from what we know bc The Mindflayer is still alive and was never killed off,So season 5 will probably be killing the mindflayer with the death of one if the main cast or just completely closing off the portals for good
how do you know the upside down existed already because from what we've seen when el killed 001 it looked pretty much like nothing on the other side. like maybe the dimension existed but there wasn't really anything in there. especially not the upside down hawkins we all know. i still think vecna created the upside down in the dimension he was send to by el. would also make more sense if vecna is the big bad all together especially him having the personal connection to el. the mindflayer being the big bad would be lame because what exactly is his motive? if the mindflayer is also an extension of vecna then it's obsession with el from the previous seasons would make so much more sense too. but that's just my opinion

The music is just a natural weakness to the way he attacks people from the upside down and when he does the mental attacks to his family. Like the psychologist told Nancy music can reach the subconscious so it just acts as a bridge from your subconscious to the conscious. Although if he attacks you in person like he does when he first fights El I'm pretty sure listening to music won't stop you from getting twisted

He was born with them it's like Professor X says in one of those movies about evolution. Basically the chances are pitifully low but sometimes there is a leap in evolution. The problem was even though he was super powerful his power burned away his emotions so he became a serial killer pretty much. 11/Jane is definitely his child invitro or his half sister. That's why he was so fixated on her. I don't think he gains power by killing he just takes their memories as a trophy.

Vecnas dad was able to snap out of his curse because there was music playing and his dad saw the opening and he went for it. Music provokes and stimulates part of the brain that brings back good memories if it’s your favourite song. Same thing with Max.
It's not so much that music is the thing that neutralizes Vecna, it's a lifeline. Music saves people, and gives them hope when they going through some dark shit (like in Max' case, she was using music to cope with losing Billy). It doesn't necessarily have to be music, it was just the lifeline that worked
