    Actually, the east asian that shows up is probably from the native american ancestry. Some parts of DNA are just broadly shared by large swats of population, and east asians and native americans having some common genetic history at some point, it's hard for geneticists to pinpoint where exactly it comes from when you test, kinda like those "broadly european" categories. If you had no native and just east asian, it might be from asia, but since you do have traces of native dna and a family story, it's more likely to come from a native american source.

    • @willie417
      @willie417 6 лет назад

      what with this, if someone don't have native they say it was a family lie, then if they do show a little, they write it off like it wasn't there, why is that? that happens in a lot of videos

      I know how it works just like me and my daughter show small amounts of native, but my grand daughter might show zero unless she get some from her fathers line. The farther back it was the less is shown today, so with that said a lot of the stories are true
      but a lot of these kiddies keep saying it was a lie

    Hey, this is just something I've heard, so take it with a grain of salt, but some black friends of mine that are much better educated on African-American history have told me that a lot of black people in the past used to claim Native American ancestry when they wanted to hide white ancestry. A white/black person would have encountered more aggressive racism than a black/native person.

    • @VividLik3Rainbow
      @VividLik3Rainbow 6 лет назад +4

      Yeah I feel like so many people I know did and in my family they said it. I think it has to do with mixing but colorism is also a thing that still exists today so perhaps some of it may have been that they felt it sounded better to add a mix. But I think a lot of Black people have some sort of story in their family tree from what used to happen to slaves.

    Jessica- While Finland is not Scandinavia proper, it's still part of, I guess, the "extended Scandinavia" of Nordic countries, so if you have a little bit of Finn that's not surprising at all. Your African ancestry is less than 50% because (and I'm assuming your dad as AA and not directly from Africa) it's pretty much impossible to be AA and not have at least a little bit of European admixture due to (not so glorious) historical reasons. The East Asian part almost certainly came from your Native American heritage, because Natives share a common genetic ancestry with East Asians & that's where they crossed the Bering Strait from during the 1st population migration to America.

    I did 23andme last year because all my life I was told that I was Native American from my dad's side. I got the results back and I was 1/4 native. Luckily I was able to find my dad's father and enroll into his tribe. Just know that if you cannot trace an ancestor from your native side, it's likely tribes or other natives will not accept you. It's not that don't want anything to do with you, but DNA isn't a sure thing. They need proof of your lineage. But it is so darn cool!

  • @shash1
    @shash1 6 лет назад +1

    I just want to put out there that just because something doesn’t show up in your dna or it’s less than expected doesn’t mean you don’t have an ancestor of that ancestry. It just means you only inherited a small percentage or none of it. But you may still pass it on to your kids. My mother, sister, nephew and I did the 23 and me test. My mom and I are the only ones that got Polynesian in our results. My sister and nephew both have ashkanazi Jew in theirs. I call it genetic roulette.

    Because of the way that genes are passed down across generations, your aunt could very well be right about having A closer family member who is Native American and it just isn’t carried through into your genetics. During meiosis, genetic recombination happens between homologous chromosome pairs and chromatids are randomly given to the 4 daughter cells. You get 23 chromosomes from each parent, but the chromosomes they give you are a jumble of their matches chromosomes in no assigned amounts. You could get a chromosome with genes made up predominantly from one chromosome and not get as much of the other chromosome. It’s good to keep in mind if what you’re interested in is better understanding your family story as opposed to understanding your genetic make up. I’m not sure what 23 and me uses. Is it mitochondrial dna?

    • @zoezetacando5827
      @zoezetacando5827 6 лет назад +7

      riverofperil Even if the DNA you inherit is random and won't always be an even split, it's nearly impossible to have a closely related family member be something and for you to inherit so little. It's way more likely that the native american dna she happened to get is a coincidence and is from way farther back than for her to have a closer relative and inherit that little. The native american myth is really common in many families, so it makes sense.

    • @riverofperil
      @riverofperil 6 лет назад

      Zeta Camellia True, but just because something is less likely doesn’t mean it is impossible. Having other family members take the DNA test would help confirm ancestry.

    • @zoezetacando5827
      @zoezetacando5827 6 лет назад

      riverofperil even so, it's still very very very much more likely to be that it was just family fables and the 0.7 percent of Native DNA was a coincidence. Like the girl on the left said, a lot of people who claim to have native ancestry end up either coming up with none, or have less than 1 percent. There is no way that they all just happened to only inherit 1 percent or none. DNA is very interesting, though. So it's very rare, but possible. But again, most of the time it's just the family tales.

She could have a kid with a african American man wear the kid skin comes out almost white and/or the kids hair texture is straight and red. It's funny how genes work!! It keeps it interesting and some how it's also connected to karma. There are so many different ways on how genes can show themselves in all people including mix race people. They say life is like a box of chocolate you never know what you are going to get!!! LOL!! Being mix race like myself does not guarantee straight or losely curl hair and pale skin, that's one way to be mix not the only way to be mix!

    You may still have Native American (or other ethnicity) ancestors even if it doesn't show up in your DNA. With the exception of the Y chromosome (straight male line, guys only) and mitochondrial DNA (straight female line, both genders) individual great great grand parents (and further back) can get lost from the genetic makeup pretty easily.
    On average you have less then 1% (less then the margin of error of DNA tests) of each ancestors DNA when you go back 7 generations. 5 generations is just over 3% average. And that's AVERAGE, some you may have 10% of and others 0%. Each generation the chromosomes gets a coin flip if they stick around or not. dna-explained.com/2017/06/27/ancestral-dna-percentages-how-much-of-them-is-in-you/

    People need to keep in mind that the United States is as big as all of the countries in Europe combined. Traveling from country to country in Europe is like traveling from state to state in the US. So I guess these people making rude comments know all of the states in the US? They may think, I'm from Europe, why would I care about every state in the US? Exactly! We are from the US, why would most Americans care to know about every little country? Think about it before you judge.

      I was thinking of doing the ancestory.com one it doesent have certain things but it does have the basic where you are from bits. And it categorizes by region a bit deeper than 23 u and me however it doesn’t have the health bits and I don’t think traits either but it’s cheaper than 23 u and mes biggest bundle which is the one with the health things and stuff and then 23 u and me has a basic cheater one that doesent include that.
      I live in nz and the shipping would be horrendous for me aswell which was why I’m probably going to do the ancestory.com one from the Australian branch.

    you can't really say that a specific sequence of DNA only appears in one place, especially as all men originally came from Africa. therefore those tests are fun to make but don't speak the complete truth. f.ex. it is possible she's really Native American but only carries alleles that are actually quite rare in that population, hence the test didn't detect it. they just defined the most common alleles in a population that's also why they give you such specific values in the end. :) especially European countries which are so close to each other never had separate populations, the borders were made but there was a lot of gene flowing between them. I know you re not racist but that's kind of where racism comes from (believe in nations, races and certain differences between them which are not really there). cool video but keep this in the back of your heads;)
