I just watched this video again just to remind myself how great it is!!
I have this plugin. I use this plugin. It's an outstanding tool. Highly recommended on tracks, buses, or the 2 bus. A lot of creativity can be had from this plugin once you learn how to use it.
Great tip, Ken. Thanks for sharing. The BX_Digital 3 is all over my mixes - one of my favourite plugins - and now I have even more ways to use it. You are right, it is so easy to overuse stereo widening so I appreciate meaningful tips in how to use it well
My mixes tend to be only as good as the best techniques I can remember while I'm mixing. LOL!
Excellent Tutorial. Thank you Ken for taking the time to show your insights and techniques :)
wish i knew this 5 years ago!!! love this plug-in!!
Fantastic lesson as always, Ken. The barking dog was a nice touch :)
Ken is amazing! And I love Plugin Alliance, I own quite a few plugins from them. Thanks for sharing PA + Ken.
Ken, thanks for this video and the intro story. It's all true! 👍
Dirk, you are so ahead of your time. Glad to know of ya!
Thanks for the review, Ken!
This plugin is amazing...without touching a single dial, it brings out the woofer!
Great tips there !
awesome
SOUNDS GREAT AFTER THE BX DIGITAL V3 KEN ... THIS IS THE ONLY PLUGIN IM MISSING IN THE PACK ... YOU JUST MADE ME BYE IT KEN THANKS SOUNDS GREAT ...
Thanks Ken!
@Mixing Night Audio : Ken! Can you do an update on how you use this now, 6 years (and 50+ gold albums) later?
my dogs jumped of their beds barking all over at 01:00 am... btw thanks for the Tricks! :D
Thank you sir...great little tutorial
Couldn't avoid laughing everytime I heard the barking god sound coming from my left earbud.
Interesting story. I remember when it first came was on the Creamware DSP before it went to native.
Great tips! thank you!
are the mid side eq and mono-stereo section is meaning the Same..??
Who let the dogs out? jajajj spectacular plugin, thanks!
The other thing that confused me: You are using the Bx EQ on a single channel (on the wobble pad) to not stereo widen the whole mix, but when you boosted the single frequency, you left the Stereo Widening at default 100% (i.e. off). Was that intentional? I guess I was expecting you to widen the one track element. Or was this just about simulating a widening?
Great idea. I wouldn't sweep the widening effect to where it affects anything below 100Hz though. It will just get eliminated by most mastering engineers when they mono subharmonics. I will say that boosting sides at specific frequencies isn't completely mono-compatible, because it may lead to differences in perceived EQ between mid and side. However, if you apply this technique in a fairly flat midrange spectrum that doesn't alter the listener's perception of overall EQ between mid and side separately, you're pretty safe. BTW, I really dug the mix (though I didn't mono-check it). :D Why does mono matter? Mostly because of vinyl, clubs, and to some extent cars and other small spaces that cause phase cancellation to varying degrees. Bad mono = bad mix. Of course, boosts to mid are heard in both stereo and mono playback and are completely safe. It's just side boosting you have to be cautious with. Basically, you want side and mid signals to be tonally similar, so it isn't a disappointment when you hear it in mono. Granted, you don't want or need much below 100Hz in the side signal.
bx_digital has a MonoMaker on board, which makes everything below the frequency you dial in completely mono.
Right, but in his demo, he ended up resting the side boost near 100Hz. Seemed kind of low to me. I side cut all the time at around 70Hz, which curves up past a hundred. All I'm saying is it may be helpful to aim a bit higher and be aware of the tonal differences between mid and side.
you're the man
Love this plugin! Thanks for the single band boost/simulated widening effect. Something confused me in your presentation. You set the Q to "1" and called it "1 octave". However, the numbers go lower for wider and higher for narrower. So, with the default at 2, you widened the Q and called it "1 octave". Was that a mistake, or can you explain...?
@Chaddonal I believe he meant to say 1 dB rather than one octave. Q is measured by the dB increase of resonance per octave. It’s an easy thing to confuse, even for pros like him.
there is a dog inside my left speaker
I missed the essential bits, first when he says this band on the mids is unlinked I didn't see him unlink it, did he use the link button on the mono section? Then later with his widening of one freq band I didn't see the stereo widening knob move at all so what did he do?
It's the white button right next to the band. You can see it's a little darker than the others that are linked. Boosting the side EQ makes the width more. That widening knob is to control the entire side signal. In that example he's just widening a certain frequency.
Please, what is the name of the 2nd song??????
It would be better if PA videos were published in a higher resolution than 720p, then we could enjoy audio subtlety with greater fidelity.
Is it me or is the mix really 2k heavy?
👍
Woof!
😂
Hello Ken , I know your a busy guy , but when you have time can I ask a few questions about wireing up my 2 Behringer PX3000 patchbays. I'd appreciate your help
I hate hearing unnaturally wide mixes, very amateur hour! Great demo of this plugin.
The barking dog kinda wrecked actually hearing the effect. But good info nonetheless, thanks.
