      To set the device up and use it w/ ONLY an antenna, you first create a Sling "GUEST" account - which is totally FREE to do. Then you'll need to install either the iOS version of the Sling app on your iPhone. or the Android version on an Android-based phone. Launch the app, follow the instructions it provides & complete the setup for the AirTV 2. (& just be aware that the setup process may take longer than you'd expect if firmware updates need to be downloaded & installed to the AirTV 2.)

    I cut the cord and went to SlingTV with AirTV on Roku 4 years ago. It was one of the best monthly expenses cost cutting decisions I’ve made.
    Also, I bought an attic antenna, put it together and mounted it on a rafter. Then I ran coax from it down to the tuner, and then ran an ethernet cord from the tuner to my router.

    AirTV app on Roku was discontinued. not sure about other devices. I really wanted the original AirTV to work and work well, but I found the tuner was inferior, random connection errors, resource intensive on the network, and it would take 2-5 minutes for it to buffer and give us the spinning circle before smoothing out. I sincerely hope they've improved some things with this new version, but as for me, I've moved on.

    We really like out Sling TV paired with our antenna & AirTv Gen 1 dual tuner. We have been using ours for over two years now with no complaints. Sling TV is much cheaper with alot more subscription options then the others like Hulu +Live TV, RUclips TV, Apple TV. Using our antenna in our area we receive 22 extra local weather, news etc. channels. Its been a nice addition.

    I have the AirTV 1 and a Tablo. I am not impressed with the AirTV at all other than integrating the locals into SlingTV and it is free to use. The Tuner picks up about 20 fewer stations connected to the same antenna as my Tablo (I get 173 with Tablo and 166 with AirTV). You cannot pause and rewind live TV unless you record first (something every single other DVR does.) The UI and features are much less than what is available on the Tablo (including automatic commercial skip.) As a DVR, forget it. Whenever I connect a SSD to it some of the stations do not come in, even though the signal strength is strong.
    So I only use the AirTV as a device to integrate my locals into my SlingTV guide to avoid having to switch APPs. The only complaint about the integration is the that the channels are not grouped together. The main networks are on the top of the guide and the sub channels, independent networks, other local channels, CW, and PBS are all on the bottom of the guide and out of order

    • @beckerized8848
      @beckerized8848 4 года назад

      Are you actually disconnecting the antenna feed from the Tablo & then connecting that same exact feed to the AirTV when you do your channel scan comparison?
      I too have several complaints about the (1st generation black) dual-tuner AirTV box, but I haven't noticed any significant difference between its tuner sensitivity and any of my electronics that I own that have ATSC tuners connected to the (exact same) antenna feed.
      Also, 173 -166 = 7 fewer stations, NOT "20 fewer". & seriously, you're complaining that it is only able to tune in 166 OTA channels?
      & you claim that "... the sub channels, independent networks, other local channels, CW, and PBS are all on the bottom of the guide and out of order
      ". Yes they are at the bottom but they are in fact IN ORDER by their channel numbers when I view them through all the Sling app (regardless of the underlying O.S. that I'm running the Sling client app on.)

    • @SkepticCyclist
      @SkepticCyclist 4 года назад

      @@beckerized8848 Yes, I ran the scan with the same coax to both devices. The Tablo consistently gets about 10 more channels than the AirTv. In fact, I just did a rescan of both yesterday because I moved my antenna up another 10 feet in order to get Inland Empire channels. My Tablo picked up an additional 4 channels, while the AirTV still only picked up the original 166 (same antenna and same cable.)
      Yes, the channels are not in order. The main 5 networks are on the top in order by RF channel, not virtual channel. Their sub-channels are on the bottom. For example, 11.1 listed before 2.1 and both are at the top of the guide before the Sling channels, while their sub-channels, 11.2 and others are at the bottom after the Sling channels. I can understand why 11.1 will be before 2.1 because 11.1 broadcasts on RF 11 and 2.1 broadcast on RF 31. But their sub-channels are on the same RF, so they should be listed with their main channels.
      The Tablo list the channels in order by their virtual channel, like they appear on every single other guide and like they should be.

      If you exclude low-power broadcasters, the nearest major TV market that I can easily receive OTA transmissions from broadcasts ONLY a total of 21 channels. What follows is the order (by VIRTUAL #) that they appear in when I view them in the Sling app's EPG.
      2.1 NBC
      7.1 CBS
      22.1 ABC
      45.1 FOX
      ---------------------------
      the Sling streaming channels provided my regional market

      16.1 PBS
      16.2 PBS Again
      16.3 PBS Life
      16.4 PBS World
      22.2 Stadium
      22.3 Antenna TV
      22.4 TBD
      26.1 CW
      26.2 Bounce
      43.1 Ion
      45.2 MyTV
      45.3 Charge
      45.4 Comet
      I consider "the sub channels" to be in order. As for the Sling app placing the "main networks" at the top, they do that because of the popularity of those networks.
      I do think that the app should give you an OPTION to have them placed in their TRUE order among the other OTA channels, but rather than complain about it here, why aren't you complaining to Sling's (apparently somewhat of a bonehead) AirTV Product Manager?

      Youve just opened pandoras box. The real answer is it depends. I have the antennas direct db2e, i believe they have an updated model now. Word of caution it is never possible under all situations to receive stations over 70mi away. If you see an antenna that advertises "100mi" distance it is false advertisement. Im an electrical engineer, if someone thinks they are recieving a channel from 100mi away... they are not its due to repeater towers.

      First thing I would recommend is typing in your zip code or address into the FCC website. It will search your local area for broadcast towers. This will give you a better understanding of how far those towers are from you and what antenna may work best in your specific location. The channels master website is actually pretty helpful with this information is it will search your towers and then recommend antennas that meet your needs for that specific location. One persons good experience with one specific antenna may not give you the same results.

      Uh...OTA broadcast TV as it is configured today under ATSC 1.0 is 30 fps. There is literally no point whatsoever of recording at 60 fps when broadcasts don't use 60 fps under ATSC 1.0. Being this does not have a ATSC 3.0 tuner (and no current TV has it one either), what would be the point of recording each frame twice. It won't change you experience in the slightest way. Wait for actual OTA broadcasts with 60 fps before expecting 60 fps recording.

The HDHomerun tuner does support full HD 1080i at 60 fps, and I have been using that with Plex. There is no contest in picture quality between that and the AirTV v1, even after transcoding to h264

    If you have a Samsung Smart TV, do some research before buying AirTV with Sling. It seems that this platform does not support OTA-TV fed via AirTV to Sling. AirTV's advice was to use Fire TV but that requires more cost and even more navigation difficulties for the non-techies in my home.

    Nice voice and presentation. However, does not tell you that access to content on channels like Starz, is not free . You have to pay for the streaming of content on premium channels. Also, not clear if the dvr can record from Roku channels like Pluto or You Tube. If it can record only from air tv channels- that is a disappointment. Also, would like to see what the headings and rent tabs allow you to see.

    It looks like two separate teams design the streaming box and the power adapter. 🤦🏻‍♂️ The box is a space-saving design while the power adapter is a power plug hogging device lol. If I considered this, the first thing I would do would be to look at the power requirements specs, go on Amazon and find a better adapter that meets those power requirements and toss the OEM one into the trash.
    Btw, AC (Wifi 5) is not the latest Wifi, AX is. But few client devices are available using AX (Wifi 6). Mostly high-end routers and laptop wifi cards have been released with Wifi 6.

    I had the original AirTV and had to throw it away due to it having poor security and poor customer support. My internet service provider started sending me notices on a daily basis that this device was compromised and being used in Botnet activity. All AirTV customer support told me to do was to set it to port forward, but then didn't tell me what port to forward. After I got the port forward figured out I did that and still received security alerts every day on it until I disconnected it. I would have to say you are taking a big risk on your network if you hook this up. And I couldn't find anyone at AirTV who was any help with security on this.

    1.) Improve the no-subscription experience because cord-cutting is about saving money. You can still lure in suckers.
    2.) Increase the size of the box to accept a user-provided 2.5" or better yet more reliable 3.5" hard drive inside.
    3.) Move the power supply inside the box and use a normal power cord not a bulky wart.
    4.) Use web-based setup so we don't need another doggoned phone app to eat up precious memory on our devices. NO MORE APPS!!!
    5.) Add a "firewalled" mode for security that doesn't punch holes through my router for access from the Internet. Seriously, who wants to watch their home antenna on the road? We aren't ALL nuts out here.
    The last thing I need is another flimsy lightweight "falls off on the floor dragged by the cords" box, let alone one with a doofy power supply that blocks outlets.
    Also tell us whether this box also turns into a pumpkin when ATSC 3 is forced down our throats with its DRM model.

    I have the AirTV 1 with a Sling subscription. Certainly it does what it's meant to do insofar as making SlingTV a more complete experience at a lower price point than it's competitors. That said, there are some things about it that disappoint me, and I'm further disappointed it sounds like this new device doesn't address them.
    1st disappointment is price. The AirTV doesn't actually get you any content. You can still watch all the same stuff without it, you just have to press the "input" button on your TV (with current Roku TV's perhaps even that's no longer the case). So what it gets you is a bit of convenience. However, at $100 for said convenience, I can't help but feel the AirTV is a bit of a gadget, rather than a genuinely useful appliance. For a gadget, I feel like a $50 price would make it more attractive.
    Second big disappointment, I think it's basically inexcusable that it doesn't allow for pause/rewind of live TV (for antenna content, obviously). That sort of functionality has existed on every OTA DVR for years.
    Finally, while I think it's great it has a USB port to add storage, I feel like it would be nice if it at least came with a bit of on board storage. 64 gig or something small would really increase the utility of the device "out of the box". That small amount would be plenty for the buffer so the device could do pause/rewind on love TV, and add a few hours of recording space. Not enough to record entire seasons shows and keep them forever, but enough to record a few things you aren't home for to watch later.

    • @SkepticCyclist
      @SkepticCyclist 4 года назад +1

      Leigh Hargreaves Yeah the inability to pause and rewind live tv not only surprised me, but also disappointed me. Every DVR can do this. Even my Roku TV with a USB drive can pause and rewind my antenna TV.

    • @sandror6984
      @sandror6984 4 года назад

      Yeah I agree. I am ok with the price point if they included what you mentioned because after all, still providing free tv guide and free app on Roku and other devices, etc. So the price at or $100 is ok to me. But the other disappointment for me is that Sling app on Apple TV does not support AirTV, but if you try same app in iPad or iPhone it works. And Apple TV still has AirTV so a bit of a disconnect with this device and software.
      Planning to return mine and will see if they have a better version. If they had all your points plus apple tv, think this product would be a winner.

    • @jay2dresq
      @jay2dresq 4 года назад

      @@SkepticCyclist Yes. What gets me is that it is recording what you watch anyway. In one instance I was tired and set the DVR to record the last 20 minutes of a movie so I could go to bed. When I checked in the morning, the entire movie was recorded.

    How does this compare to the Tablo?

    • @SkepticCyclist
      @SkepticCyclist 4 года назад +2

      The Tablo is better in just about every way. The only thing that is better about the AirTV is the integration into the Sling guide if you're a Sling sub and the subscription is free. You can also use the Tablo for free but you lose many of the great features of the paid Tablo Subscription (such as losing the ability to watch your Tablo outside of your home, the 14 day guide will only be 1 day on the free version, and lose automatic commercial skip.)
      Things I do not like about AirTV:
      1) The channels are not in order. The main networks are grouped together at the top of the guide. The independent stations, local stations, sub channels, CW, and PBS are out of order at the bottom of the guide.
      2) You canNOT pause and rewind live TV. You have to first record the program, then watch the recording by going out of the channel and into recordings in order to pause and rewind the program. Just about every other DVR allows you to pause and rewind live TV without having to record.
      3) No surround sound
      4) Video quality is only 720p and the transcoding on Tablo is much better. This does make the AirTV work faster, but at a cost of picture quality
