I used to play this with my Dad. He did the fancy intro and I just played the rhythm. He passed 8 years ago and I have forgotten how to play it, until now...thank you for this awesome lesson!
How on Earth is he such a good teacher?!? This literally covered the song exactly how I wanted to learn it and was super detailed while not being overly wordy.
This is great! I've been listening to the Eddie Arnold version a lot and then discovered that Doc Watson and Billy both do versions that are closer to the style of guitar I want to play. This is immensely helpful.
This guy is probably the best teacher i have found online perfect speed for intermediate and advanced players would like to see you play and sing the entire song at the end it would really help people to understand the changes great job thanks again !!!! Awesome job please do more !!!!’
This is an **excellent ** lesson. Nice relaxed, straightforward approach and manner, comprehensively covers every part....you're really good at this, you should do more. There are hundreds of really awful tutors on RUclips....what a pleasure to find something so good for a song I really wanted to learn (and this will help almost anyone to get there). Thanks!
I wish I had seen this before I spent hours replaying the Fretboard Journal video over and over. I’m still working on the solo so if you want to do a video on that it would be appreciated.
I didn’t even see what you’re doing yet. I just clicked it. I push pause the comment I’m gonna see what this is about dude if you teach me how to play this, I’m gonna video it and send it to you in gratitude.
Any other more beginner/basic traditional bluegrass songs that Billy covers would be awesome and probably do really well. thank you for this gem though
Love the information but you may want to consider focusing more on explaining transitions between parts as you seem to explain each part that may have been difficult to learn on our own perfectly but I had to keep going back through your demonstrations because your explanations did not explain exactly how the parts transition together.
All that said, I'm now learning a song way easier than watching Billy Strings myself like I had to do for the Wagoner's Lad. And it's all because of you, so thanking you kindly.
A better elaboration is model your explanations after your demonstrations. Make sure once someone follows your steps EXACTLY then that sounds like the Demonstrations. You only seem to explain parts of your demonstration and don't follow-up with a demonstration of those steps as though you're playing with us learning. This video is great for those who already know the Song real well or have no troubles counting in each beat. As a musician who started as a percussionist in school, I find it difficult sometimes to just feel the transition, need to be able to count it. Some of the transitions are naturally difficult to just do if you're counting wrong.

Why doesn't this have a million views??? This is exactly how to play the song. Massive R E S P E C T
Thanks Todd - much appreciated!
I agree
You are exactly right.

Glad you enjoyed it! I don't have a Wild Bill Jones lesson, but I'll put that on the list. I need to get more of these done soon!
This was such a good lesson. Would love to see your take on Doc Watson and Billy Strings's versions of Tom Dooley
Thanks! That would be a great one. I'll keep you posted!
Only 2 years later and Tom Dooley video is up 😂
Thanks bud, I like the nitty gritty dirt band version too, which is pretty close to this as well, good stuff from down under

I followed, in the end, by just directly mimicking the strums you were doing, but it still leaves out the technical understanding of what's happening.
I'll consider that - thanks!
You are to fast , slow it down for us beginners 😂
If there are any parts that move to quick, try slowing down the playback speed on RUclips - I use that feature all the time
This kid s the best out there
