Ok, I just purchased the SL1200 MKII from my local record shop, SUPER clean, near mint! He knows the original owner and the deck has only been used to beat match EDM. The record shop owner also is a service technician so if i should need any repairs or re-calibration he can do it! Now for the best part, I paid, wait for it, $325!! no kidding! Gimbal is solid, no play in the bearings, pitch slider is clean, VTA and anti skate all perfect, no movement in the switch housings, tone arm is perfectly balanced, strobes, pop up all working fine, no issues with the motor, dots stay as they should at zero and there is no wobble or flutter when bringing pitch up or down, stays locked in as it should. This particular 1200 was born April 1998.
Really useful video. Just took mine apart to clean them for the first time ever in over 20 years. Weren't that dirty but calibration was out on one deck. Managed to get it back to normal from your instructions so thanks.
Love this. I learnt to service my 1200’s myself back in the day. Used to keep them joints clean. You’ve inspired me. Might cop an old 1200 and restore it.
so good man, thank you!! I just bought an old 1200 which has been sitting in a houseboat. there are some signs of corrosion on the platter (green mold) but the inside look clean! this video has been very helpful to fix a small break issue, thank you!! the height of the tonearm is stuck but i don't want to take it apart, will try to put some wd40 and let it sit so see if it loosens...
bro thank you and everyone like you for posting videos like this. TOO AWESOME. i have a mkII myself and i might have to open her up and give her a nice clean. the guy i bought it off of said he cleaned it himself before giving it to me, calibrated the pitch and everything, but the unfortunate facts are that 1) i smoked a lot of cigarettes and bud in the same room as it in the 4 years i've owned it and 2) i used a physically damaged headshell that may have potentially ruined but definitely damaged/misaligned the headshell collar on the end of the tonearm. :| very annoying problem to have from what i can tell, cuz i have to do a shit ton of work just to get to TWO SCREWS on the underside of the tonearm... argh.
Thanks for the video, I'm going to be purchasing a Sl1200 MKII from my local record shop owner and this helped me out to know how to clean it and get it looking pretty again. Also @16:37 I'm certain that main board had been removed and or serviced at some point, it's missing the white zip ties that hold the wires in place. I'll be checking out more of your videos.
Mine legit looks like this...I just pulled it out of a closet after 10 years of no use. However, mine actually works well hahah...I really need to clean it. Thanks for the vid.
Lol bio-hazard for sure:) pristine*nice to hear*how you pull that? have had my pair since 97 and i take care of my babies,,,but they sure have wear and tear ;)
You haven’t seen dirty. I bought a pair of a guy the other side of the country. He said he would deliver them for 70£. Drive 3 hours. I was like ok. Long story short. Both pitch controls shot. Oil and dirt and gunk on both. Smashed feet. Dust covers cracked. Platters covered in glue or something. Fault on one deck. Just awful. Took a week stripping down and new genuine parts fitted. They look like new now. Can’t believe the price these go for and are treated like shit
Thank u so much mate u are an angel coming from the heaven now i know how to clean my spindle and that break btw do u think sl 1200 mk3 do the same? and nice video i been looking for a tutorial in yiutube but quite confusing im glad that i found your video really helps me alot👍cheers!
Thank you appreciate your support and I'm glad the video helped you. And yes they are basically the same. I haven't done any new videos lately because I'm relocating and my studio is packed up. I should be back by the end of July or the first of June with more open boxings and review tech stuff. So please stay with me and share. Thanks again.
Is there a reason you don't take the entire thing apart to really clean everything under the main PCB and power supply etc? too much work or is there something that could go wrong?
Typically I use air and I've found so far that it's not necessary very little debris gets under there. And yes something could get damaged. This video was a fast guide to do minor repairs and tuning.
@38:00 you don’t have to remove the platter You can work directly using one of the holes. And use a plastic screw driver to avoid shorten something inside. Or just wrap the crew driver with tape to isolate the screw driver
I'm just pulling out a 1200 that's been sitting for 16 year in a shed it's far worse than this. I'm trying to restore it. I'm sure this video will be a great help.
@@DerekJonesdereksmokinjones do you have a video on how to use the deoxit to clean & lubricate? I haven't looked through all the videos you posted yet.
Strip down for a deck that bad, and take a rabies shot after working on it😂 I was hiding behind the sofa with no hoover attachment and wrong driver 😢Sorry but this a rough approach, and I mean rough. The shrapnel sticking to the platter, shit happens
First I would try recalibration of the pitch. Also check the spindle to make sure it's properly labeled 🏷. Otherwise you may need to replace the drive moter. I have found on some boards that had speed adjustment like on Stanton turntables. But its hard to say what you issues could be without seeing it 😕
Just a heads up. Why is your pitch control running in reverse? If you pull the pitch control towards you, it should speed up, not slow down. I have a brand new 1200 and it, like every other deck I've used is the same. If you pull the pitch control toward you fully, it should speed up. If you push it back fully toward the gimble, the platter will slow down. You need to check that.
I need your help. The 1200 I mentioned in a previous comment I got it cleaned & oiled the motor. Now the problem I have, there's no spring in the 33 button where i can't switch to 45. What can i do to fix it.
This is just gross. Why some DJs treat an in house system like shit amazes me. I have my own Shure cartridges and Technics slip mats because I treat my records and CDs like they're gold and rare which most are. Unbelievable. Andrew, Australia.
You need a set of JIS Srewdeivers and you won't strip screws like that . The screwdriver shouldn't have movment in the screw head it should drop in and grip .. Regular Philips are not the same as JIS Philpis tips... JIS IS Japaneses Industrial Standard..
ewwwwwww!!! lol I mean, THESE are the kind of deck, I think u should deeeeep clean and polish. And perhaps think about taking off the paint and polishing it so it look all chrome and stuff.
I quite enjoy cleaning stinky gear that otherwise has good integrity and will be worth it after. For this I would start with a paintbrush to swab out the looser dust and fur with the vacuum held right nearby. Then I'd mist it with some diluted purpleblaster etc. and go over with a soft bristle brush and toothbrush in some spots. Wipe down with a damp rag and its then 95% clean. After the actual electronics and mechanical repairs etc I'd finish off with some car dashboard type products and a microfibre cloth, it'll sparkle. From my guitar building I have a stationary cloth buffing wheel, and that with the finest polish compound does a great job on polishing any dullness and smaller scratches out of the dustcovers.

Well I believe u can adjust the pause without removing the platter. Through the holes....
You know the brake settings? Set the brake between 90 and max 120 degrees if you press on stop. That is said in the servicemanual. Grz E
I learnt a lot. Great post. Thank you
Thank you appreciate 🙏 you.
Just discovered your channel. Loved your video. Appreciate all the good instructions. Peace love and rock and roll ✌️
Thank you so much for your support. Gratitude
Thank you
KAB Electro Acoustics sells sl1200 motor oil and parts. Good customer service.
Also
Look under Panasonic for parts not under Technics.
You can adjust the brake without removing the platter, these two holes on it are made just for this purpose.
That deck is a bio-hazard man……it’s sad to see a fine piece of machinery abused like that - my Mk2 is 33 years old and still looks pristine.
😆

Facts they cost to much to abuse them. Sad 😔
The spin back after brake might be done on purpose. We often adjusted it spin back for that reverse effect during mixes.
OMG at the very beginning when you showed the hairball/tonearm dish. WTF man. ME: DYING
Thanks man.
thank you for watching

What can be used to unyellow the plinth? One of mine looks like that pretty bad
Which grease do you recommend for the vertical tonearm adjustment?
he is def a dad and his kids are using his shit. crazy shade hahhahhahhahah. Great VIDEO ! thankful for this game from an OG
excellent video. my technics have small stains, can i clean with a damp cloth or alcohol or a glass cleaner?
Use any electronic safe spray cleaners. Or put the cleaner on your cloth first
Magic eraser works well. But do not go at hard.
f.y.i - No need to take the platter off! *Use the hole in the platter to adjust the brake/pitch

Hey Derek great video, my 1200mk2 is running slow what do you think it might be? I don't think the pitch slider is doing anything either?

I've repaired about 25 to 40 1200s during college... never seen one that nasty!
Where has that one been? In a gardening shed? 😂
He had 3 stack in a room for 5 years where his dogs 🐕 and kids hang out

The screw stripping was cringe.
Then the metal from the stripped screw is spilt all over the magnetic coils and board 🤣
Damn. Be gentle to the tone arm. It’s very sensitive
That wouldn't break an sl1200, and I'm pretty sure this one is used for DJ stuff, so it doesn't have to be perfectly calibrated.
That's nasty. Time for a haircut
