    It’s a wonderful tutorial John! I have a couple of zipper pulls made from para cord from my late friend Louie Bartos, of L B Sails, in Ketchikan Alaska. He used to make them and give them away as gifts. Now thanks to you, I can continue the tradition! He wrote a wonderful little book on making a Sailor’s Ditty Bag, and Sea Bag. Thanks again, and I love your chiming clock! I have four of them going in here, one does Ship’s bells. Yours is the best knotting tutorial series on You Tube.

      Many thanks for your kind words. As for the clock, I sometimes get people complaining when a video doesn't have it chiming in the background. It is funny how decorative knotwork is packed with memories, I look at some of my work and can hear the dog snoring and the warmth of the sun. It is good that you are carrying on the tradition of your friend. Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated.

    Your instructions on the lanyard knot worked a treat! My first one I gave to my eldest son because I made it in camo para cord. I just ordered some 550 in red to make many of these for the treasure chest. I belong to a group of traditional small boaters. Each July we have a treasure hunt that culminates in “finding” a treasure chest buried on the sandbar by our Captain Morgan. Besides lots of costume jewelry and rum, there are some useful bits, and bobs. These will be good addition.

    About knotting materials, a local charity thrift shop always seems to have a stock of old "new stock" shoelaces.
    The laces are varied in style, color and length - but they seem well suited to the task. And they a lot cheaper than paracord.
    The shop also has a tub filled with used golf balls - which are grand cores for monkey fist and globe knots.

      It is funny, when you first start this hobby you don't know where to get stuff from. Then gradually find some nice little sources that you want to keep a secret. I often go along the harbour or the beach to mainly walk the dog, but also see what off cuts there are.

      Thanks Knucker. I find that with many decorative knotters, they do develope a particular style. Sometimes you look at a knot and think, that looks in the style of say, Mikko Snellman. Sounds like a nice combination of the MW and the Daimond.

    Very helpful. Do you have a tutorial for doing a turks head slider knot. The single is for the bosuns call, then the top double is a slider to adjust the length and wear in eppaulets of the uniform, also sometimes flat braided as well in the loop.

      Often this Turks Head Knot is used as a slider: ruclips.net/video/6pL0HHYciQc/видео.html Gosh, this is one of my very first videos, must update this one. When I tie this Turks Head, I then make sure the ends finish under the TH and then lash them together with a bit of whipping twine.

    Howdy; Just viewed your rendition of the Sailor's lanyard/Whistle knot. Thanks for showing how to continue on to the next (doubled), knot. I'm curious as to how you would finish a working lanyard that would be attached by a snap hook to a belt loop and the overall length would be between 4 & 6 in total length. Thanks for taking the time to make these interesting and informative videos.

    • @KnottingKnots
      @KnottingKnots  6 лет назад

      You will not believe how many times I have tried to answer this. Are you determined to just use two strands of cordage? I often find that using 4 or more makes the task a little easier.

    • @hankh1610
      @hankh1610 6 лет назад +1

      Ok, I'm open to suggestion, unless you are a hypnotist (chuckle), how would one migrate from 2 strands to 4?

    • @KnottingKnots
      @KnottingKnots  6 лет назад +1

      OK the simplest way of making a lanyard with a loop at each end would be to get one long length of cord a form a large loop. When creating the loop make sure that the two end of the cord meet in the middle between the two end loops (half way down the total length. This could then be covered with a Portuguese Sennit similar to the one shown in this video: ruclips.net/video/aBpbOm_meSU/видео.html Alternatively you could make this lanyard or a variation of it? ruclips.net/video/DK8nE21lylM/видео.html Even though it is on a pair of binos it would also make a good decorative lanyard?

    • @hankh1610
      @hankh1610 6 лет назад +1

      JD, Howdy; Thanks for the links, main reason I was asking was that all of the Bosuns that I've known had their lanyards with the small loop at one end for the pipe/knife/ whatever, and the other end especially if for a pipe, had a larger loop for going around the Bosun's neck and would fit to the "V" in the jumper where their neckerchief knot would also be. Again, thanks for the links.

    • @KnottingKnots
      @KnottingKnots  6 лет назад +1

      Ah yes, they probably then had something similar to this: ruclips.net/video/sC4s6FIWWHg/видео.html this is the one simpler ones that people make.

I definitely went to more advanced knots. I was exposed to fancy work which I practiced with anytime I had time. Wish I still had access to all the line we had on board ship. I'm self taught and have some good books on the subject but never seem to have time to enjoy it anymore. I've started watching your videos and am starting to get back into it. Thanks for posting and for answering comments. I was in the Pacific and never made it to England. Though I've met and liked some of your country's kinsmen. The aussies and a few kiwis too. @@KnottingKnots I think I just need to keep rewatching especially on the double, The first part is easy to follow but as it gets more busy looking, if you could slow down when you turn the bundle in your hand, it gets a little disorienting keeping track as it gets turned 180. But also part of the problem was that i was using a thinner cotton white rope that isn’t very supple...so the loops don’t stay spread out...

      Yep, the problem is that it is listed in Ashley's as the others also................. so pipe down ;-) How rude of me, just joking. Have you ever had to listen to "call the hands?"

    I liked the tut, but man you don't have to explain every move for 5 minutes

      Usually whenever I play a video, I play it at 1.5X. May be you should try 2X with my video's 😉 One reason that I do explain in detail, is that one of my subscribers is blind. He listens to the video, whilst his granddaughter watches it. He tries to tie the knot and she directs him when he goes wrong.
