So much more efficient for medium length trips honestly. The president can go straight from the white house to say Milwaukee now instead of getting on a helicopter at the white house flying to Andrews and getting on a jumbo jet. Brilliant.
Dean Borchert It isn't completely safe, there have been numerous accidents with the Osprey. So the president doesn't want to risk it, so they put the Secret Service in it instead.
R. J. Ulmer All the vehicles they use have had accidents in the past. The Osprey is a stable and reliable platform now, so I'm pretty sure that's not why they don't use it. Who knows for sure though.
In some way i am surprised that they transport a large group of politicians, press ... , people looking like office people, in an aircraft with the door open in flight.

And then the president be able to get out and get out and walk out and walk right into the White House?from a long flight? Not having to change nothing....just stand up...
I'm just a nobody but I've read the book on the Osprey's development. I would stick to the Sea Stallion. IF you want to keep the President from disaster. My opinion.
Well, you have missed a lot about the V-22. It's been flying for nearly 20 years, and only 4 (maybe 5 now) have crashed. It actually has an outstanding safety record. BTW, the +100mph downwash from the H-53 causes major problem in many situations. A significant drawback. It is also much slower than the V-22.
50 KIS is not MUCH slower Pelican ? I got 600 flt.hrs. in D model 53's. VERY tough to beat.Every other one doesn't have ALL dift parts from updates so they won't CRASH! Rotor wash is brutal in a shitter. Only about 80KIS in reality. I looked out the hell hole enough! SCE
SE: I'm not knocking the H-53. I've got 50 hrs myself in them. But the V-22 is significantly faster. And the H-53 was found to be unsatisfactory as a plane guard due to the high rotor wash when we trialed in on USS America back in '92. Good plane for what it does.
+bradfor925 Marine One or any helicopters used for the President got 'white tops' on them. These don't, so you can differentiate them. Second, these Ospreys are used for presidential support and travels with Marine One and all these aircraft are operated by the Marines of HMX-1 in Quantico and they are all using the Marines color so why do they need to change the color? The older CH-46E support helicopters got the same color too, so why can't these new MV-22s be of the same color?
Eva, I agree. New things are always tenuous. However, fixed wing aircraft always have a built in safe measure of being able to fly without rotors. I will say now and it may never change, the Osprey, however, notoriously unsafe, could be a viable aircraft in years to come I don't see it. This was a project so wanted by the Gyrines, they were willing to sacrifice multiple lives to produce. It's not a product that is compatible with the human factor. Too many faults await and too many accidents have occurred to make it useful. Time will tell.
Actually, the V-22 has an excellent safety record. Over 200 planes flying for over 25 years. Four (4) crashes in development (two were pilot error) and only three (3) crashes in the last 16 years of operational flying. One crash every five years is Pretty damn safe by any measure!!!
i just love the VT-22 osprey. it is so different and unique to its class.

I wonder if the pilots get a nervous pucker factor flying all those dignitaries around.
I didn't realize the Presidential Squadron also had an Osprey.
