But at the moment Zoe Saldaña, a 45-year-old mother of three, is focusing on more terrestrial roles - on-camera and off. She talks with correspondent Seth Doane about her new TV series, "Special Ops: Lioness," in which she plays a CIA station chief.

From scratch was such an amazing show. Very moving. Great actress !
She comes across as incredibly humble, and she's great in Lioness.

I am a HUGE fan of Zoe Saldana. She's fantastic in every role but is just astonishing in Lioness. Sheridan has drawn a character that she seems ready and eminently able to fully inhabit. She truly makes what would be a great series a truly amazing experience. I hope to see her career continue to flourish.
I remember then she was in The terminal with Tom Hanks I thought to myself saying one day she will be a super star and now she is I love watching her.
I also just watched FROM SCRATCH. OMG, the tub scene with her mom and step mom was phenomenal. After watching her on that limited series on Netflix, I quickly checked if she was nominated for an Emmy. It was so great.
I’m a fan of Zoe and I’m really looking forward to her new show. Hopefully after the strike ends, more broader opportunities outside of super heroes and science fiction will come for her.

Ms. Saldana has been one of my fav. actresses! Real talent and so freakin' beautiful.
Shes such a sweet and talented woman.. And I love how she speaks both English and Spanish perfectly. She has no accent when she talks in Spanish just bc she was born here bc her whole fam is Latino.
But some people have accents even though they were born in the US, because their parents are immigrants.

Center Stage wasn’t a big movie and it was made when she was a virtual unknown. It was a teen movie.

She’s herself and will get there by being just that, herself. There’s no need to be “the next”; there’s room for both.
Her performance in a little indie film called "Haven" with Orlando Bloom....is so brutal and so beautiful I will never forget it. A truly talented woman and that Taylor Sheridan worked with Angelina Jolie on "Those Who Wish Me Dead" shows he's dedicated to telling great stories with strong compelling women as leads.
Angelina Jolie is unfortunately victims of the mind programmation of the industry of entertainment.
I will always be a fan. Yes we make missteps in life and our careers. I think in some way she learned a valuable lesson about herself and what it truly means to have responsibility for our decisions. The pain that is still there isn't only because she hasn't forgiven herself. As she said, she was AGGRESSIVELY bullied. Nasty people tried to shut her and her career down. They wrote and said things that one day her children may come across (because that's the truth of social media...it's out there forever). She holds herself accountable. When we post about it we should note that and note the bullying because they, too, (the bullies) should be held to account.

A year later she was in Italy filming the limited-series 'From Scratch' and found herself once again thinking about that Sheridan offer and brought it up to her husband.
"I guess he was just sick of me always mentioning the show and not doing anything about it. He was like, 'Just call him, just text him.' And the thing about Taylor is that if if he's busy and it's not something that he considers important, he won't call you back for weeks. If it's really something that he wants to really hear, he calls back within seconds, so that's exactly what he did.
"He said, 'I'm waiting on you. The script is still here. We haven't done anything with it. Please say yes.' And I did," Saldana recounted.
After that initial trepidation to take the role, Saldana says her admiration of Sheridan's work has only grown. He wrote each of the show's eight episodes.
"I have a great deal of respect of somebody that really, really believes in what they do," she said. "Now, knowing him a little more, he's very confident about his writing. And that may throw people off (but) I tend to really lean in and revere people that know who they are. If your strength is this, then own it, protect it. And if you don't want to compromise on compromise, it's OK as long as we still keep tuning into your stories. It's working."

It wasn’t “cancelled” necessarily, but the movie was a gigantic flop. And I don’t think anybody outside of black women even really noticed or cared that Saldaña even did a Nina Simone biopic movie. Nina Simone was and always will be a cult figure in music.

Plus, I’m sure Nina Simone would not have liked the movie altogether. It was a very generic portrayal of her life and basically reduces her whole career to show business cliches.

this wasn't an example of " the correction police". this was a very sensitive subject within the Black community that stems from ACTUAL issues like colorism and true representation. Admittedly, the backlash towards was too strong and misguided, but she herself admits that she should not have taken that role. We should have given her more grace in that moment, but Black ppl still love her and respect her! It was a teachable moment for everyone involved.

Zoe wasn't the right pick for Nina Simone. I'd feel the same way had Halle Berry been picked. Someone like Viola Davis would have been a better pick. Viola's physical appearance is closer to Nina's.
It’s a moot point. The whole movie was a mess. It reduced Simone’s cultural impact to show business cliches, so I think the movie altogether was doomed not to go over well.
No it was just like this person mentioned that I (and a lot of people) had Viola Davis in mind of playing the role of Nina Simone. I'm not sure if she would've done a better job than Zoe Saldana but I'm just letting you know what a lot of people were thinking at the time. I hope Zoe forgives me for thinking that way and I'm sorry 😔.

Well, they have done a pretty good job at casting. Finally another show that persuades a little bit more of a 'raw' combat feeling, and troubles/sacrifices that come with that. Glad to still see something like this, during this woke era... Season 1 was good.

Saldaña definitely gave it her best, but she was clearly miscast and trying to transform her into Simone just looks grotesque. On top of that, the movie was just incredibly cliche and bland and it’s director clearly did not really understand what made Nina Simone so unique in music.

Even if they didn’t basically use grotesque methods to have Saldaña play Simone, the movie’s greatest fault is it was just cliche and bland and it’s director clearly didn’t understand what made Simone such a unique figure in music.
It made me think of Nicole Kidman in “The Hours.” She had prosthetics and it was fine, but only bc she was white and there was no perceived catalyst for people to attack. This poor young woman…not for all the money in the world would I want to be young in Hollywood right now. Everyone looks for ways to be up in arms.
I don't think it's wrong to play Nina, your heart was in it and you did it out of respect. I'm mixed black 30% Indian 60 and 10 Chinese so what am I ? Lost? Where do I belong? I don't really give a rats what anyone thinks about me, I really don't and neither should she.

Yes, and when that whole made-up pseudo-controversy was playing out, all I could think of was, "Does anyone really believe Nina Simone would have an issue with Zoe Saldana playing her?"
She was great, at least she clearly tried to be, but she was badly miscast and the movie was just identikit and bland and a poor representation of what made Nina Simone such a unique figure in music.
@@markwaldron8954I believe she would have. I think she would have found the portrayal grotesque at best. There’s trying to play someone else and having that turn into something incredibly cartoonish. It’s not easy to find that line for even the greatest actor to succeed in that.
@@markwaldron8954mmm Nina own daughter said she had to deal with issues being dark skin and didn't like Zoe playing it the wht director along with a Dominican who goes out her way to say she not black puts on blackface after people said it was foul. She only sorry because the movie failed.
