- A playthrough of Capcom's 1998 licensed-based puzzle game for the Nintendo 64, Magical Tetris Challenge.
Played through as Donald Duck on the default difficulty level.
If you'd like to see Mickey's story, see my video of the PlayStation version of the game here: • Magical Tetris Challen...
Capcom's Disney take on the N64 of the Soviet PC game was certainly one of the more memorable console versions of Tetris to appear over the years. It features four different stories, one for each character you can play as, and a presentation that'll make any kid (or adult ;) ) fall in love with it within seconds.
Magical Tetris Challenge has just about all of the standard features found in any Tetris game, but it adds quite a few of its own. In addition to the cast of Disney characters and multiple storylines, it introduces "pentominos" that are launched at your opponent as you successfully clear lines - they go between standard 2x2 blocks all the way up to massive 5x5 blocks. As you can imagine, they can wreak havoc on the unsuspecting recipient. The AI can be pretty tough in this game - far more so than the recent Puyo Puyo Tetris. I actually can't recall playing another Tetris game that was quite this stiff in its difficulty level.
The graphics really sell this one, though. Try to ignore the ugly and totally out of place prerendered CGI playing field "toppers" - they look gross - but the sprites look great, and they tend to resemble the sprite work from Capcom's SNES Mickey games, but with much more detail and animation. The story is merely window-dressing, but it undoubtedly captures the signature Disney charm. If you like Mickey and you like Tetris, this one makes for an easy decision. It's well worth playing.
Side note: the N64 game is the only version of the game that was released in America. There was, however, a PlayStation version released in Japan and Europe.

Fun Fact: This game is the first game directed by Hidemaro Fujibayashi, who was a former Capcom employee who would later go on to work for Nintendo, where he would be best known for his work on The Legend of Zelda series, including directing Skyward Sword and the Critically-Acclaimed Zelda games, Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
"Thanks for helping me out, Donald!"
By beating the snot out of you in Tetris? Goofy has an odd definition of helping.
That's Goofy to you.
Thanks for helping me out BY KICKING MY ASS!
Disney plus Capcom typically equals awesome, and Magical Tetris Challenge fits that pattern well.
NintendoComplete best game post karateka nes
Can you do Disney Trivia Challenge for the pc?
NewsMan 95 I don't think I know that one. I did do The D Show, though. Did you see that one?
NintendoComplete 👍 I did.
Considering how amazing Aladdin on SNES was, I concur.
The soundtrack is soooo good
5:41 all clear. finally !
Donald Duck is on a journey to humilliate their friends through Magical Tetris Challenge
I remember this game growing up. I’m lucky to still have it.
Wow, this has that pure late 90s Capcom flair in just about everything. It's just weird to see it in a game that's far from being made for arcade/fighting game otaku.
Also, cute how Mickey has the Steamboat Willie animation on the third stage.
What do you mean
For normal difficulty, this looked like playing against a cpu in Chess.
It was a good thing that Nintendo allowed this game to be released here in North America on the Nintendo 64 and the Gameboy Color because Sony's stupid no 2D policy by Bernie Stolar force the PlayStation version to be released in Japan and Europe only.
Hmm, I'm pretty certain plenty of 2D PS1 games were released in North America. What's the story?
Doggy that was
and then somehow Tetris Plus and The Next Tetris made it out alive in the United States on the PS1 as well? odd logic from the guys at Sony
Daisy should've appeared in this game.
Disney tetris is so good.
BOOM! Tetris for Donald
1:15 reactions on screen:
Mickey:Pick me whenever.... :)
Donald:I'm the Best! :D
Goofy:How bout me? :D
Minnie:Oh will you please pick me? :O
Capcom definitely killed it with this one. They used the N64 like a CPS2 on steroids! Fantastic art and music!
So why hasn’t this game been Remade yet? I know that it’s Disney and all but from what I know Disney and Nintendo aren’t on bad terms with each other it’s not a bad game and could use some more content and online play
The other big reason besides the license is this game's style/mechanics are more line with Sega Tetris ie It doesn't fit the stupid Tetris Guideline that's been a thing since the PS2 era
Tetris Guideline tetris problems.
Tetris games must follow those versions.
Although Tetris Effect has modes similar to these ones but I bet it was a pain to get authorization for them.
Screw the Tetris guidelines I don't give one diddly squat about it
Say, what are the differences between this and its PS1 and Arcade counterparts?
I feel like they are pretty much the exact same thing, with the only difference being the control scheme.
Now if you combine the style of this with puyo puyo teris gameplay and pizza tower, then we boutta have a masterpiece on our hands
What does Pizza Tower have to do with this ?
The first Directed game from the Director of Zelda Breath of the Wild
Why is this music awesome?
The level 1 music is totally inspired by Sublime - "What I Got"
This game looks like a lost Capcom arcade game
LucasMR321 nice joe musashi avatar
Thanks ;-)
Because it is. The game had an arcade release exclusivly in Japan.
LucasMR321 it's a rare title that I own and love it
Only bad part about the N64 version is that it lacks the Capcom fanfare the PS1 version had (which is also heard in 3 Mega Man games)
It's on the N64 cartridge. What did you expect ?
How can this game have a high quality ost on N64 ?
This game has HipHop soundtrack.
Is it just me or does the opening music sound like the theme from Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous?
Great Video! Can You Do The GBC Version Playing The Standard Tetris From N64 And PS1 (1P) And Quest Mode GBC Exclusive (Quest)? ;)
Paolo Gamer I might at some point :)

Why won’t you do Wild Woody for the Sega CD?!? Please do it! I beg you, Alex!
You just asked the other day. Even if i were to do it, you expect that I'd have it done this fast?
NintendoComplete 🤔 Hmm. ☁️✏️📀🕹 Okay. Do you have the game?
Look. I subscribed to you just now!
No one has done playthroughs of Wild Woody for the Sega CD on RUclips!
Hey give the guy a chance. He has a upload list he follows. Give him time, and yes, he'll get to the game.
