    Fantastic video sir! So true! I bought a yamaha 3080 to pair with a klipsch setup 280f's, 450c's, 250's, with a few sets of (RSL C34e's in the ceiling (atmos and surround back). (7.1.2) and i was having a hard time getting a good surround experience. Ended up with a used JBL-AVA-7 (7 X 125) and even the wife was like ok thats a huge difference! The amplifier brought in so many smaller details in movies (with voice clarity) and really brrought the surround effects to life! Great video, you really bring us important things to consider when diving into this stuff!!! :D

      My advice where possible always start from quality. Because there is nothing to gain when adding quality to mediocre! Unless speakers or rooms require it, adding an expensive Poweramp to Japanese AVR doesn't necessarily improve the quality of its sound. A poweramps only job is to boost an output signal! Whereas with an AVR, it is responsible for receiving & processing the signal. Even if an AVR is using external amplification, it's still the components within the AVR that will be responsible for quality the signal! Boosting an already established signal is basically giving one more of what ones already got. Hence, always start with something solid.

    • @TechnoDad
      @TechnoDad  4 года назад +3

      Yup! A lot of people think that since Klipsch speakers are sensitive and they don't need all that extra power. I've noticed they come alive when you push a lot of watts through them. I got a bigger amp on the way!!

      I switched to separates about 1 year ago after watching Techno Dad's channel, Audioholics, and Youthman. Its amazing the difference it makes. I also run Klipsch speakers in a big room, so i needed more power. If your in search of good power at an affordable price, check out Outlaw Audio. I have the 7000x (7 channel amp 130 watts per) powering my surrounds, and three 2200 M's (1 channel amp 200 watts per)for my front stage. They usually run deals with the 2200's and you save when you buy more than 1. Its quality amplification for a great price. Thanks to the RUclips channels mentioned above for leading me to that company, because I found out quickly just how expensive amplifiers can be. Good luck!

    Biggest disadvantage for me is this: noise. I don't recall ever getting any hissing or humming using an avr, but you introduce the possibility of raising your noise floor due to different types of interference in connecting to a power amp. This is especially true for speakers with high efficiency ratings. You may hear hiss from your tweeters up close. And often people complain about humming sounds, if there is interference from a nearby wifi router, cable line, or plugging into an incompatible power conditioner. It's an annoying problem that can be resolved but one that comes up frequently.

    • @DF-et4gs
      @DF-et4gs 4 года назад

      Man, I just ran into this over the last few weeks. I was trying to add an Onkyo power amp to my Denon x4500h to run 11 speakers. No matter what I did I had noise in every speaker, not just the ones connected to the Onkyo. I tried different cables, plug configuration, and other things to eliminate the ground noise hum.
      Had me thinking next time I upgrade I will just go with the flagship AVR. Runs all the channels I need and then some, and should have enough jam for me.

    Super helpful video, but when you mentioned the cons of owning the external amp, you mentioned only space and power consumption. It seems to be that cost is also to be considered when buying separates instead of relying upon a single AVR.
    What about the sound? How much better does it sound when you connect an external amp to your AVR??

    • @TechnoDad
      @TechnoDad  3 года назад +3

      Yes, you're right, cost is a determining factor. However, Emotiva just released the new BasX series with the A3, three channel amp at $499. The sound would depend on the speakers, but overall, you'll have more dynamics and headroom.

    capacity to handle near instantaneous transients is so important for dynamic audio. That requires a tonne of current.
    I guess you could measure power consumption at the wall for your AVR in 2CH mode vs 9 channel to give a sense of comparison on what a difference in draw is being produced. Using speaker sensitivity you could turn that into a relative wattage value per channel.

    Agree with the positives 💯%. However, amps tend to have their own sound. So if you own a higher end AVR like a Yamaha, Denon or Marantz for example the amp will change the sound you spent so much money paying for. Finding a neutral as possible amp is the hard part. Your thoughts? Maybe you can do a show on them.

    Hi Channa! Hope you are well, the question is if I am running lets say 7.2.2 and I buy Rotel RMB 1555 with Marantz SR7013. Is the sound difference is going to be too much between the remaining 4 channels? I will connect the setup and then run Audessey and hopefully then balance it with SPL meter. Now is that a good combo or those 4 channels are going to suffer a lot, looking for a smooth transition for music and movies :) - Thanks! I think you somewhat answered the question by saying it should be alright ? Also your experience with Anthem was it so profound that you would go back or let me use all the bells and whistles of Marantz such as gapless audio FLAC playbacks etc. :)

    An additional reason: I have a well respected subwoofer that has an internal 640 watt power amplifier. It has excellent output down to 20 Hz. However, after a year of use, the speaker went silent. The problem: a blown power amp. I complained to the manufacturer. Unfortunately, the woofer was beyond the warranty period, so I purchased a replacement amplifier. The manufacturer did admit that they had some problems with the old amp supplier and would supply the newer, better, amp at a discount. It came, I installed it and worked well. After another year and a half, the new amp blew out. I decided to replace it with an external amplifier. I got a Behringer 1000 watt amp with DSP so I could duplicate the EQ in the original amp. This has worked perfectly, and has been in operation for more than 3 years without a problem. I believe the intense vibration of the subwoofer is what damaged the internal amps. I admit to feeding the unit lots of low frequency organ music, as well as movies with explosions.

Can I use the old AVR to power the 3 front speakers instead of buying a new dedicated power amp? The old AVR is rated at 105W per channel and I'm only using B&W DM602 S3 as my front speakers. Thanks.

If I buy the RF-7iii's, I would use those for awhile in 2 channel mode and then add an amp for them when I bought other speakers. I could only afford to buy a 65" TV, AVR along with the RF7iii's for now. I keep hearing I need 150+ watts/channel minimum for them.

    So a Power Amp can give me more loudness and clarity because the Power Amp allows more power to go to the speaker channels connected to it, leaving the AVR to devote more power to the remaining speakers powered by the AVR?
    I understand with a Power Amp you still use the AVR to adjust volume. Will a Power Amp mean for example, '40' on the AVR volume will be louder than without Power Amp?
    Thanks

  • @D.L.W.

    How does the AVR divide the remaining power to the remaining speakers when it's utilizing individual amplifiers? An 11 channel AVR had 11 individual internal amps so wouldn’t the unused channels be "wasted unused power"?

    Under powering is out of the question. However, over powering isn't exactly the right way or let's say best way to go. Speakers should also have head room just like amps. Generally speakers should (but not always necessarily) be capable of taking double the amp RMS needed (that's of course within speaker recommended amp power) to protect them, increase their life span, and also to take those dynamic shifts with ease. Yes overpowering isn't a bad move afterall and can prove worthy and quite frankly it may be the only option to so many ppl looking for an amplifier. The user must just be careful not to over drive the speakers!

    Probably a bit late to get a response but how do you get the most out of your amp when the receiver does level matching? Should you manually turn them up or will that unbalance everything?

    • @TechnoDad
      @TechnoDad  2 года назад +1

      So there’s a couple things you can do. You can connect the amp and run it as is with the “older” room calibration. Or, you can connect the amp and then re-run your room calibration. You will get more power to the externally powered speakers. However, if you connect the amp and rerun room correction, you will have a more balanced system with the extra headroom for large dynamic shifts.

    If you had an Denon X8500H would you still run an external amp? I was listening to Audioholics review, and one of the gents on there mentioned that he didn't see a need for it.
    I've been thinking about going to the flagship AVR when it's my time to upgrade, instead of having to buy an external amp, then adding a new AVR down the road.

      Also bear in mind that stepping to a higher model av receiver should be mostly based on differences in hardware quality, features, functions, number of channels supported.. etc rather than power rating since the increase in power level from lower models is generally not so much. However, it's supposed to guarantee higher sound output stage, and tonal quality.
      I would be careful when stepping from one av receiver to a higher model particularly one with a big jump in price. Would the difference in hardware and features be worth it? Would I need them? Is my room or my sound system at par with its price range?
      Going for a lower and probably much cheaper model yet still a decent one and pair it with a separate amp with tge right power may prove much wiser especially when the whole thing wands up being around the same cost of a high end AVR that I don't really need in the first place even more especially when they're have got very high price tags for which I would prefer to invest in other components of the sound system such as speakers, subwoofers, amps.. etc.

      @@musaedalfraih4682 I appreciate what you're saying, and I understand that you don't know me, or my gear, so you're going to base your response on a more general scale. Which I think is a very accurate way of viewing these things, and a comment Channa would most likely agree with.
      I'm currently running 7.1.4, with a Denon x4500H, external two channel amp, KEF Q series for LCR, surrounds and rear surrounds, KEF Ci160ER for in ceiling, and a Rythmik FVX15.
      I have two more KEF speakers I can deploy for a 9.1.4, but my AVR is maxed out on processing channels. Eventually I would love to use them as front wides, but my room isn't big enough for it. With that in mind however, when I am ready for that, I will be in the market for a new AVR.
      It's hard to stomach buying something to process 13 channels, then pair it with something of equal quality to take on the heavy lifting.
      I had convinced myself (and my wife) that I would move in that direction when the time comes.
      Now I'm wondering if I should save for an external amp first, then buy the 13 (or more) channel AVR when the time comes.

      I think the X8500H should put out a lot of power and not need an external amplifier.

    Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!
    I own the Onkyo Rz820 and just got the Focal 806 and matching center speaker as well as the 605 for the rear, also I have in ceiling Atmos speakers. I was wondering if you could suggest a very affordable add on amp to get the most out of my Focal speakers?
    My wife is about to murder me if I keep adding any more stuff to our home theater😬
    It took me a couple of years to convince her about the new Focals😔

      You can get some pretty good amps on OSD Audio for a decent price.

      @@Gpoteat100 I ended up getting the Emotiva basx A7.
      It works perfectly with driving my speakers!
      And channel separation is so much more than I could have imagined 👍

    Thank you for this video, i have one question. Does the AVR control the volume level for the external amp? My friend is using on for his rear surround speakers and he has to walk to the amp to adjust the volume, something that i am trying to avoid. i want to move my whole rack to a closet and going in there just to adjust the connected speakers will be a PITA. Please advise.
    TIA

      Power amps do not have a volume knob, so I’m not sure what he is using. He could have just bought a small amp or used an old one that had a power knob
