    Yes you definitely can, my system is a Marantz av7005 my sons bought me for my 60th birthday, I had a Carver av705x 5 channel amplifier. When I went from an older Rotel Rotel RTC 965 pre-processor to the Marantz all I can say is WOW.

    its' actually still pretty amazing the sound quality you get from better AVR', after all these years! Technology definitely kept improving, and the performance per dollar improved to a point where you actually need separates , for the average person! I'd say most do just fine running speakers as small, using powered subs, and that's all you'll likely need. Yes, better equipment dictates separates, and you get better potential sound quality. Again, depends on speakers and rest of the system though,including your expectations, lifestyle, setup, acoustics, etc whether the law of diminishing kicks in above or bellow your needs. When in doubt, and money's not an issues, yes, get separates for higher end performance

    Im interested in a double-blind test to see if you or others can tell if there is an audible difference between using a AVR as a Pre Pro and a dedicated unit. The only thing I think might make a difference is the balanced outputs if you have some kind of unusual interference

      Hard part about that is it’s not an easy switch from the AVR to a Processor. Also you would have to level match them since XLR are topically have a few dB gain.

I had a Rotel preamp processor 1570 and Rotel 1565 D - class 5 channel Amp .I Now have the Marantz SR6014 and I can say I haven't greatly lost any sound quality in the change over only noticeable is a slight decrease in dynamics. I really enjoy the tonal quality of the Marantz SR6014 overall. I think like I did careful research to find the receiver that suits yours needs but without a doubt if i had the money i would got back to separates but at this time I'll stick with my Marantz. it's a shame there's only high end options for pre/pro.

    The one thing about this comparison is it isn't real apples to apples, the SR8015 is more in line with the 8805A in terms of features and level of build quality. The 7706 is better compared to the SR7015, which would put the prices more in perspective of the real difference, the 8805A is significantly more expensive than the 7706, just as the SR8015 is quite a lot dearer than the SR7015.
    Not to say the SR7015 and 7706 are not very good quality, but they are not as high end as the Japanese made SR8015 and 8805A.
    As it happens, the 8805A is $700 AUD more expensive than the SR8015, and the 7706 is as much as $800 AUD more expensive than the SR7015. It is rather hard to swallow that step up in price when they take out the amps and sell them for more, the preamp stage would really want to be a huge step up to justify that.
    It's a shame Denon don't sell a pre/pro version of the X6700H and the A1H, but then i don't think they really need to either i spose.

  • @ericshutter5305
    @ericshutter5305 Год назад

    pro's or cons really depend on brand/type as price and specs depend on it ... Buying an SR8015, 8016 and 8017 isn't fun for your wallet.
    But neither is buying an AV10 or AVM90 ... so it all depends...

    • @kingcrimson234
      @kingcrimson234 Год назад +1

      Balanced outputs have no benefit other than being better at canceling out external noise, which shouldn't be an issue anyway at short distances like if you just have an amp sitting right on top of a processor and you just have some 1-2 foot RCA cables connecting them. If you're not running 10-20+ foot cables, there's no reason to use balanced. There is absolutely no difference in quality and unbalanced is 100% not a problem.

    You should also add . . .
    Your situation is not "typical".
    Most people that buy surround sound receivers are not dropping 3 to 4 thousand dollars on one. Most AVRs sold (80%) are in the $200 to $1,500 range.
    A more accurate comparison would be to compare a typical $650 AVR to separate components costing $4,700 to $357,000.
    In that, far more "realistic scenario", i think it becomes crystal clear why most people will go with an AVR. Simply put, most people (97% of the population), cannot afford separates.
    I do think that someday, (80+ years from now?), we may see companies develop affordable, powerful separates, (2-3 hundred dollars for a pre-pro and 2-3 hundred dollars for a 7 channel amplifier, adjusted for inflation of course), but I am not holding my breath.

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  3 года назад

      You are correct, owning separates is not typical. The VAST majority of home theater enthusiasts rock an AVR (which is awesome). Nothing wrong with that.
      I have the opportunity to review a lot of gear and simply want to share my experiences with them in real world environments and scenarios.
      Marantz introduced their new Pre-Amp Mode which is supposed to get you close to separates performance. The main purpose of this video was to see how the SR8015 in Preamp mode compares do separates.
      If we heard a significant difference in this comparison, wouldn't you think there would be even more of a difference if I had used a $650 AVR? I'm not sure what purpose that would serve. Most would say that was an unfair comparison because of the HUGE price difference.
      Most people that have a $650 AVR likely do not currently have the budget for separates, regardless of how huge the improvement might be.
      I'm not sure where you are coming up with your 80% and 97% numbers. The reality is we all spend money on something that could easily allow us to be able to purchase something that might otherwise seem unattainable.
      Let's take smoking for example.
      "Smokers in New York City shell out around $10.67 per pack, which amounts to $320 per month, $3,895 per year, or $38,950 over ten years to sustain a pack-a-day habit."
      Seems like 1 year of not smoking would allow someone who does to be able to afford separates.
      I've never bought into the "most people can't afford" mindset. If someone wants something bad enough, they will figure out a way to earn the income to be able to afford it.
      I could have easily bought into the lie that "Only rich people have dedicated theater rooms." Instead, I worked my butt off to pay off our debts and built two home businesses, bought quality used equipment, bartered website design services for audio gear etc. As the saying goes, "Where there's a will, there's a away."
      And FWIW, I certainly wouldn't hold your breath for a $300 pre-pro or 7ch amplifier.
      Have a great weekend

    AVR interconnect into amp, so avr running fr surround sound, hence 2.0 by amp plus sw

      NO dear channels are also increasing day by day so you need change amp also. let say you having 7 channel amp. but now Pre/Pro amp is of 13 you had to go for 13 change amp also. And as the time passes capacitors of amp decay . So its better if you want your system young go for both .

    Hey youthman, I recently bought a 8500h, I had a very good dealer who offered me to check both marantz 8805 and Denon 8500h in my home.
    I setup both systems and to my disbelief I found the marantz 8805 was completely lifeless and Denon was full of liveliness......
    Pls give a clarification on that.
    Btw I upgraded from 4400h
    I used external amplifier for both units.
    I used rca outputs from marantz
    I used Denon in preamp mode
    Pls clarify

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  4 года назад +3

      I have not reviewed either one of those but I have yet to hear anyone that owns an 8805 say that it was nothing but stellar. Not sure if it was a set up issue, difference in calibration etc. There are a lot of things that could’ve caused a difference

    • @merwynvincent
      @merwynvincent 4 года назад

      @@Youthman even I wanted to own a processor from marantz. I had very high expectations for 8805. But the bass response was very poor. Bass integration was poor.
      The dealer even told me that I won't like 8805 since it doesn't sound as good as 8500. But I insisted him to sell me the processor, so he just gave me both to find out for myself.....
      Even Denon sounds dynamic only in preamp mode. Once i enable the internal amps the life just goes away..... Whether they do it intentionally I don't know. But once internal amps r enabled it sounds like junk. I have not tried connecting 8500's internal amps yet.

    I appreciate you Youthman. Keep up the good work, I enjoy your vids. I'm also looking forward to/wondering about your review of the marantz sr8015 and/or 7015. I'm looking at most likely buying the 7015, as I have a five channel amp to power the mains and two rears, and would need the receiver only for the four atmos speakers I'm running so the additional power per channel rating of the 8015 is not usable for my situation. I do wonder about if there is any sound quality difference between the two though.

    I have a question. I mentioned (cut and pasted) in a couple videos - not sure about your or not, to be honest, about ordering an external amp (Tonewinner AD-8300PA 11-chahnnel amp) as a first step towards separates. I've heard it mentioned somewhere or other that the internal amps can cause interference with the processing chips and that going full pre-out would benefit clarity, but I can't find articles or videos confirming or denying. I e-mailed my brother, a Ph.D. who teaches electrical engineering at a university (under grad and grad classes) He agreed that single amping a speaker at 240W (I have Klipsch RP-60Mii for L/R) I would get better results than my current bi-amp with ~120W., but he's very suspect about the EMI and would appreciate any article or video about it. Any way you could post a link if you can find anything that might be useful?? My current AVR is a Denon X4700H and I have a 7.2.2 system. I just bought the amp a minute ago...I better not be disappointed ! :)

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  Год назад

      I have on mini amplifiers over the years, none of them have been absolute night and day difference than using internal amplification. With that said, I have always had highly efficient speakers, so they didn’t require a lot of power but me personally, I like having the extra headroom that an amplifier provides no matter what volume I want to play my system, I don’t have to worry about clipping or not having enough power. Know how much of that can be heard, that’s highly subjective and debatable.

    • @od40k77
      @od40k77 4 года назад +1

      Definitely go separated over higher end avrs. But, it’s hard to recommend the appropriate brands and models without knowing the budget you’d like to stay at for the pre pro and amp. I’m sure Youthman will recommend one brand and model for a $4000 budget and a totally different brand and model with a $10,000 budget. Knowing how much you have to work with will allow Youthman to give you the best advice on what to buy, IMO.

      Remember its digital world if your digital source Lets say CD having good quality sound recorded and you system producing the way you want to listen. You are having the world best system., If you run for let say HI Res DAC and amps above >10000 $ and your source is garbage (Not high-Quality recording) The expensive system can't correct it. Even it will output Garbage. Don't get confused Enjoy life..

      I had the SR8015 with Klipsch and never felt the need for an amp. If the speakers sound clean at the volumes you enjoy listening, you likely do not “need” an amp. Adding external amps is a good thing as it allows for better dynamics and overhead.

Sorry a lot of info I know but in my question is this. I have no receiver as of the moment. It was fried by The Electric Company working on the lines, I have bad luck. So I'll need a good new receiver and more amps...... Basically I want to go separates, I'm going crazy just thinking about it🥴🥴🥴 help me Obi-Wan you're my only hope.

    Nice. From your 8012 receiver to 7705 pre/pro does the sound differences is day and night? how about from 7705 to monolith HTP1? does HPT1 sound much better than 7705? Because me myself heard so many people saying pre/pro is much better than AVR, so I am wating from my Emotova XMC-2 to replace my Denon AVR X6400H. I am expect a much better sound from XMC-2. We'll see when the XMC-2 arrived. Actually I prefer HTP1 than XMC-2 but unfortunately HTP1 is not available in my country.

    Hey Michael, (WARNING THIS COULD BE LONG) my name is Roy Diaz and I am new to this whole home theater gig but I am getting a lot of knowledge for this from you and your RUclips counterparts. I will in the future be getting a Klipsch Reference Premier line (with either Klipsch SPL or SVS line for subwoofers) for a possible 7.2.4 or 7.2.6 (depending on space) Dolby Atmos system with by-amping my fronts (L&R) and my surround rears (L&R). This video has helped me a lot (along with other videos) to understand how to use AVRs with amplifiers and also utilizing separates, which I am considering very highly. I do have a couple of confusing questions that I am asking help with. Essentially, if I am going to use separates, how(1) and with what(2) would I need use the Marantz AV8805 in order to complete my sounding/video staging to include by-amping connections for my fonts (Klipsch RP-8000F) and surround rears (Klipsch RP-6000F or the RP-600M)? Any and all sounding advice or considerations would be most helpful. I know it is all up to my preferences and space but in this case knowledge is power. Thank you very much. Please let me know through this comment thread (instead of the video teleconference that you all do daily) as my schedule does not permit me to be available during your RUclips Daily HI-FI.

    Just received my Anthem AVR that is hooked up to Totem acoustics bc I place priority on listening more critically to music, but, anything I choose has to go from 2 channel to Home Theatre in my den and bonus rooms. I have Emotiva separates in the bonus. The Anthem is just out of the box and I haven’t had time to use any room correction and the music sounds phenomenal. My wife even commented on how nice and warm it sounds. I also use Cambridge and Arcam products over time so I’ve heard quite a few products who do it well. So far very impressed.

    Excellent presentation, however, little confusing at the beginning. When explaining the AVR you started by talking about the processor component. When you talked about the processor, you noted the lack of amplification. All true, however, to a novice they may think that the pre/pro did not have all the processor compensation like Dolby, Atmis etc. Which obviously is not true. Bottom line, the only difference really is the amplification on the AVR vs no amp on the pre/pro.
