His vlogs made me understand a lot about a professional musician's life and training! Explains why his sound is so great, he is really critical of himself and never neglects fundamentals.
didn't even notice it... crazy I played with one other drumer once and the sound and groove is great, but staying tight together is freakin hard... and they did it basically for a whole album and through the crazyness of Snarky Puppy... simply above top level.
I look at Snarky Puppy as a modern version of the 1930s-1940s jazz big bands, like the Count Basie Orchestra. The difference is that Snarky Puppy incorporates all of the sounds and styles that were pioneered between the big band era and now (like rock, fusion, funk, electronic keyboards, electric guitars, etc.), but while still retaining the horns, the improvisation, the swing, and the huge sound of the big bands.
Seems like we were shot from the same musical gun Joe! I commented as follows on another YT vid. I left it in full:- "As a youngster I was a snobby classically trained pianist with a penchant for 'difficult' chamber music by Bartok, Janacek et al. I also loved sophisticated 'out-there' modern jazz. I looked down on "rock" as inferior until one happy day... a younger work colleague lent me the Dan's "Can't Buy A Thrill". It was about the same time in the mid-seventies that "Haitian Divorce" made the radio playlists in the UK. The jazz chops, the key changes, the irony of the esoteric lyrics and the sheer professionalism of the arrangement and engineering led to me become a lifelong convert. Steely Dan became the soundtrack of my life. But this is not simply a personal tribute to the genius that is SD. No way! This is a resounding plaudit for Leonid & Friends, so tragically split apart by Putler's insane ambitions for territorial expansion. Forget geo-politics for a split second! Listen instead to the perfection of this cover of "My Old School". Wow...words don't cover it! It would be a perfect compliment if I likened them to a slavic "Snarky Puppy". Michael League jazz aficianados will know what I mean. Leonid, who like me, is an older guy is now a hero of mine and an inspiration to us all! Don't even get me started on Ksenya Buzina. What a talented hottie! Check out "Speck of Dust" immediately, if not sooner!!!! (FYI I have been a youtuber since God was in short trousers. This is my very first comment. Richly deserved, Leonid!)" Enough said, right?
That f#%ing bassline at the end is mindblowing!!!! Michael League take the bass playing to a whole new level of complexity and simplicity at the same time. And the way all of this musicians work together as a whole is nowadays the best music in the world. This is my new Snarky puppy favorite song, can't stop feeling the vibe.
I've never been so happy to clean my house till i do it listening to Snarky Puppy. This band is keeping my mental health in good shape for years, thank you guys.
Fun fact...One week ago I was walking alone in Amsterdam with a huge smile on my face listening to this song and a guy asked me for a lighter and what I was listening to. Random human, hope you enjoyed this one!
You know a song slaps when Larnell is looking around at 3:38 like DANG! Listening to these songs has already been enjoyable, but seeing the joy on their faces when they play makes it even better. Can't wait to see you guys live again!
Reynolds solo here showcases masterful style and phrasing. Good funky keyboards from Justin Stanton- nice seeing him in the mix chopping it up. Larnell's snare sound is on point, and that last fill made light look slow.
@@EtiKai13 he plays with such an awareness of his position in the overall music. A solo tailored to the context. While that might seem a matter of course, to see it done this well is uncommon.
The base idea of the song is so simple, yet so complex with all the details and decorations throughout the song. I love it! Snarky Puppy always makes me so happy! ❤
This is why I love this album so much. Simplicity is the bedrock of every track and in my opinion that's something the group got a bit away from in the last...say 2 or 3 albums.
So many great songs on this album. Excited to see them in Atlanta in April. Love the Bob Reynolds solo (as always), and Mr. Lewis asserting dominance at the end.
They didn't disappoint. Wish that they had played Pineapple at the show, but they killed it with what they did play. Might have to pick up tickets for their show in New Orleans in October.
Props to the mix engineer for making everything discernible in this beautiful cacophony of sound! Not an easy job, despite the musicians being so on point with their parts and sounds. I hear you!
My little rehearsal band tries to play these amazing songs, with some success, and just playing them brings wide smiles to all of us. Beautifully crafted, funky, clever and satisfying - the Pups are not just for Christmas they are for life.
I usually think my favorite Snarky Puppy song / album is whichever one I am listening to... but this song is REALLY SPECIAL! The composition, arrangement, and performances are excellent as usual, with yet another outstanding tenor sax solo by Bob Reynolds and a fantastic playout by Justin Stanton on the keyboard. These guys just don't stop giving us the best music in the genre... and the dueling horn mini sections at the end?!?! WOW!!! JUST WOW!!! Thanks Mike, Maz, Justin, Chris B, Larnell, J.T., Bob R, Bob L, Mark, Bobby, Bill, Chris M, The GREAT Nate, Jay, Zach, Keita, Jamison, Marcello, and of course, Shaun Martin. You guys teach me something new EVERY. SINGLE. TIME I put on one of your recordings... and your performances have literally brought joy to millions!
This is just the most gorgeously upbeat song on the album. And I'm not necessarily a fan of upbeat songs, but this one gets me happy every time I listen to it.
Sax solo is my favourite solo in this album. Listened to it at least 50 times. Killer intro. Fantastic melodic and thematic development. So many moments. Expressively played. Fantastic climax. That Coltrane quote hits so hard. I also love the two notes ending on the up beat.
How clean is this recording and mixing!?!? I wouldn't believe this is recorded live if I hadn't watched them live 4 times. I think it's time to accept the fact they are all musical aliens!

Also amazing with live recording is Emmet Cohen’s sound team. They record in his lounge room and the sound is incredible. Emmet and also Aussie ensemble The Consouls record live so frequently it is no mean feat, especially The Consouls who come up with jazz arrangements of 8-10 different vgm tunes every month.
Great song, Bobs solo is killing it, amazing tone on the tenor, good job everyone, you guys always look like your having so much fun, behind all the hard work, thank you for all the great music, Happy Holidays to you all and thanks for the Pineapple gift!

Nice to see how they get the iconic keys off all eras to have a real wide palette at hand, Yamaha CP70, Fender Rhodes, Hohner D-6 clavinette, plus the reissue of the Mini Moog and the Dave Smith (Prophet V) as well digital Korg synths. Great mix and arrangement, 3 guitars, 3 keys, 3 drummers, 3 percussionists, great solo by Bob Reynolds. Thanks for sharing.

Fantastic. Love everything about these guys. Can never get enough of them. Sadly I reside in Australia and don’t think I’ll ever get to see them live. 😢
So energizing to hear and watch these folks perform! I’m starting to get a familiar feeling, though - I recognize it from back in the day when a new Michael Brecker side would be released. Each one would be better than the last incredible release! After a while you’d take this “impossible” trajectory for granted. Now I listen back in disbelief that I could ever take any of it for granted! Having these Snarky Puppy vids available at my fingertips is like having the Grand Canyon out my front door.
Rest in peace Shaun Martin!
I'm so bummed to hear about this, such an awesome player!
Anyone else find themselves unable to stop smiling when watching these videos? Love these guys!
Im with you 100% I love all of their music but i think We Like it Here may be one of the greatest live performances of any genre from any era.
Absolutely
Also when listening to them on Spotify I always smile and bang my head to the rhythm with a stank!

Bob Reynolds popping off on that solo
