- The Disney College Program is a sought-after internship that offers college students a chance to work and learn at Walt Disney World Resort or Disneyland Resort. During the program, participants gain valuable skills in the entertainment industry, earn college credit, attend networking events, and develop personally and professionally. However, the program is highly competitive and challenging. Participants are expected to work long hours and adapt to a fast-paced and dynamic work environment. The program also requires participants to balance work responsibilities with academic coursework, which can be difficult to manage. Additionally, some participants face harassment and sometimes go without any help from management. Despite these challenges, the Disney College Program remains a unique and rewarding opportunity for college students who are passionate about the entertainment industry and willing to work hard to achieve their goals.

unfortunately the “dark side” of disney she’s talking about is present in just about every single job i’ve ever had. limited training, 15 min breaks, on your feet all day, horrible customers, negligent management. but i truly believe everybody should work a job like this at least once in their life because it’ll change how you treat people in the service industry. i’ve been yelled at enough times to know that i will never be a karen.
Agreed. It sounds like the many run of the mill service jobs I worked in high school and early college.
And personally, I didn’t even feel truly exploited as a worker until I began my journey as a professional writer.
But I get it. She’s from a small town, and maybe didn’t have much work experiences before and during college.
I know🥲 I was like this sounds familiar
Experienced it as a young barista & then again when I decided to join the healthcare field. The absolute worst feeling & I wish I was stronger back then to just quit. Now I make sure to train any young person & help them out. I’m 27 & new nurses are coming in as young as 22 & Im there for them. Any question they have, if I see them struggling or anxious I make sure to check in with them. We all have to start somewhere it amazes me how much people forget where they started
@@evelynneleven i wish i had someone like you to help me out when i was first starting my retail job😭 they really just threw me out there not knowing anything and expected me to learn through trial by fire. nobody asked me if i had questions. if you tried to ask a manager a question they’d roll their eyes like you’re wasting their time. when i finally quit it was the most freeing experience ever. but honestly i still think everyone needs to work in the service industry because it teaches you a lot about yourself and what you do and don’t respond to. also makes you develop tons of compassion for workers
💯
If your like me and are watching this to hear the dark side of Disney don’t waste your time because she never says anything dark about them. The title is misleading.
thank you bestie
it seems like the guest mainly talks about the challenging training aspects of the disney program. it was really interesting to me, but i agree that the title was pretty misleading, haha
Thanks!
Thank you!
Thank you
what’s the dark side? just sounds like any customer service job
Honestly! I thought it would get into the true dark stuff that’s been going on since Disney was invented….
@@Empireswithelk so did i
Wow this girl needs a reality check.
Not me waiting the entire 1:40 hours to get to the dark side part and realising at the last 5 minutes that it’ll never come 💀
No shade to this girl, she seems really sweet, but this video is not at all about the dark side of Disney World as the title suggests. Most of this is run of the mill experiences in customer service, and frustration at things not going the way you want them too, which is just life.
Waste of my timeeeeee
her experience in magic kingdom and talking about how horrible it was, sis that's about any customer service job ever. You never experienced that bc you worked in the fairy godmother thingy as a character, OF COURSE customers won't be nasty to you 😂
I worked at dutch bros coffee and it was much darker than disney literally felt like a cult
omfg this is so fucking real i also am ex dutch bros employee shit is insane
I have an interview next week should i go or no
I love this podcast and the interesting stories on the behind scenes of Disney employees. The title of this podcast "The Dark Side of disney . . ." Doesn't seem to fit. I was expecting something more sinister.
No lie, i’m not trying to be mean but it genuinely sounds like this girl is just complaining about what everyone else also had to go through. I want to hear the story about the girl who had to go back to England or the employees who couldn’t just run home when their homes got taken. Sounds like she had it good compared to many others.
Yeah, I noticed that too. She’s kinda just complaining about life. Sometimes you have to do things you don’t like, but for the most part she got what she wanted.
I agree. The women on this channel typically have stories that show their resilience and perseverance through adversity and trauma. I could truly care less about this woman’s experiences. I went through the same thing working at a theme park. It’s not ideal but it’s also not that traumatic. I just found it boring and like you said, complaining. Was a bit of a time waster listening to this.
100%
seeing the way others are treated will effect anyone who isn’t selfish
Not only is there nothing really “dark” about her experiences, she’s also just telling random stories that are irrelevant at the end and have nothing to do with the title. This is the first episode of this podcast I didn’t enjoy :(
This sounds just like many retail jobs I’ve had before. There is a HUGE dark side to retail/service industry jobs that people who have never worked in the industry just would not understand.
I love how you don’t have an intro and just jump right in!! 💕
Its good because it makes you want to listen to the full podcast in order to learn about the guest.
Love it!
Yeah but an intro about the guest would be nice and how they met
This sounds like “the dark side” of every job ever 😭 I usually really enjoy the episodes and don’t mind lighter topics at all but … eh this genuinely felt like she was complaining about something most of us experience while making it sound really unusual and unique. Looking forward to the next episode though!
She didn’t decide the title of the episode tho. And she was obviously invited on to share her experiences with this particular job so I don’t think you can really count this as complaining.
Can’t agree more
@@buibear88 ya and it was a flop.. as decided by the audience
What’s she’s describing is how it is to work for a giant corporation. Customer service is filled with Karens. Although when I worked at Macys/Bloomingdale’s if someone died HR did offer support groups…that no one utilized. Probably why Disney did not discuss it. Among legal reasons.
every episode dev seems more and more comfy lol
i'm always excited about the cats getting comfy too
This should be titled “the dark side of having a job”
Or the reality of having a job.
I'm only 28 minutes in. Its sounds like working in retail so far.
honestly 😂😂😂😂
exactly what i thought. she says they only had 15 minute breaks. i thought that was the standard. and honestly there were many days it was more like 5 minutes😅
Right I’m like ok get to the “dark side” lol
@@Erin49694 15 minute lunch breaks?? How long would your shifts be ? My 8 hour job (sometimes went on for 12) used to have a 1 hour lunch break in the middle...
@@tanie3543 no i was just talking about regular breaks. not lunch. lunch was always 30 minutes for us
It’s not the dark side of Disney… this is how jobs are….
this sounds like any other job
Your ability to really listen and allow your guest to talk is what stands out a lot to me. Love what you’re doing, Dev! Keep it up. Also, I think there should be at least two more camera angles. One close up your guest and one of yourself to kind of switch to whenever you or the guest are talking. I think it would help things flow a bit better 👍 best wishes! 🙏
I like it like this. The angle switching is unnatural and feels orchestrated. Her podcast feels real
Yea the angle switching is unnecessary 😭
I agree i think different angles are needed. I would like to see the faces of the guests. Also I think some sort of background is needed.
It also sounds like hell to edit all that footage! this is probably much easier for her
Right cause I wouldn’t have the patients…the whole time I’m thinking come on get to the point 😆
dark side but she still wanted to go back and it was the best experience of her life.... ok.
I'm 13 minutes in and already annoyed. She's definitely your typical theater kid personality. 🙄
That blanket looks super cozy though! 😍
Yes exactly. She seems to love to brag. 😒
yep a typical theatre kid 💀
Just because what she’s describing is the majority of experiences in retail and huge corporations, I think it’s admirable that she’s sharing her experience anyway - especially about such a hugely successful company like Disney. I’m a former CM too and what goes on behind the scenes at Disney is hell. I left my program early because of neuropathy in my legs from being forced to stand in the Florida heat for hours on end without breaks, much less being allowed to sit or lean. The thing that I think makes Disney stand out from other retail jobs and experiences is that you’re expected to uphold the classic and renowned “magic” for guests while you’re being underpaid and overworked behind the scenes, all along being told what a privilege it is to be there.
Trust me when I say there are plenty of other retail and food service jobs that expect you to uphold a certain aesthetic, demeanor, and set of rules while underpaying and overworking you while acting like you should be grateful for the work. Granted, most don't have to do it in Florida heat but I think at least some Chick Fil A workers would like to have a word with you.
@@Haylla2008a fast food restaurant is not comparable to what CM and especially Disney princesses have to do/uphold all day everyday. I’ve worked that field for years and it’s nothing compared to them.
Try doing a 12 hr shift in a hospital.
And it's a privilege to AFFORD to go to disney do you mean. Many familys skint themselves out just to givs theyre kids the experience. The whole point of spending so much money and going to disney is for the "magic" so that's your whole purpose of your job ! Same as working in a hospital. Patients deserve good care so that's what they should get.
The only podcaster that doesn’t talk over her guests 🙌🙌🙌
There's another "dark side" of Disney she didn't talk about.
"Deployed to Magic Kingdom..." I really like this phrase...similar to a war zone.
She sounds a tad conceited ngl
I’m glad I wasn’t the only one with that impression 😅
Yes!
This was the most discombobulated story.
The interviewer does a good job letting the guest talk
Agreed- she's great.
As someone who did the college program, someone who got in twice, someone who has studied the process and currently works here. I can tell you for a FACT she is overoverexaggerating. Most ppl who get into the program get the web based interviews immediately. And i could go on about how much is wrong. The shoes that have her "nerve damage" that sounds like she was out of practice tbh. I had a standing role and wore character heels longer just fine. And i worked in magic kingdom and never had an issue 🥴 Also the audacity to call another job a "real person job" when working at Disney IS A REAL JOB. This isnt pretend. This is how real people pay their bills. The entitlement is crazy
All I heard in this interview is how Disney wasn’t a good fit for her. Not to say there isn’t a dark side of Disney but this interview felt forced to think of something bad about working there
Hearing this chick complain about working for 2 hours is so great. Also bragging about how she’s so talented 🎉
😂
always so happy when you post!!! keep doing what you're doing you're awesome❤
She sounds incredibly conceited. The whole podcast is just her humble bragging about getting in. The classic "omg, I didn't even want it, I just applied just because, but I didn't really care about it, but omg, I got it without even trying at all". Really overestimating how interesting her life is 😬
Thank you for always posting! It makes my week
Can’t get past first 18 minutes of interview. Had to tap out.
*podcast existing w a guest to speak about their experiences and perspective*
Everyone watching: omg she doesn’t stop talking😮
You guys.💁🏽♀️
The allergy thing REALLY bothers me! As a lifelong fan of Disney, who has multiple severe food allergies, I have always felt safe and cared for in regard to my allergies. Disney has always projected their "allergy safety". Allergy safety should not just be for guests, but for employees to.
“Dark side” is definitely click bait. There’s a lot of shitty things but that basically describes every retail job or food service. I’ve worked food service for 6 years and her experience is way better than anything I’ve experienced. Still I watched all the way through. She was sweet and I was interested, just kind of listening to a real person even if it wasn’t anything wild or traumatic. Normal people and normal lives are interesting too.
I used to be a Disney cast member and you hit it right on the nail! Nothing changed
It’s just an entire interview with her complaining.
OMG in all of my days, I never thought I would meet anyone else from Eden, North Carolina! When I tell people about Eden, no one ever knows where it is! Born and raised there too!
I went to Disney World for the first time last year. I made sure to write down all the names of the cast members who I interacted with in any way. I was overly nice to the CMs because I knew they probably all dealt with a lot of BS. When I got home, I wrote in to specifically give "compliments" to the CMs through the app. I really hope the compliments made it up the chain.
That’s so kind of you ❤❤❤
I didn't even know you could do this!
you can tell she’s a theater kid…
Not what I was expecting from the title.
Her bubbly personality gives Disney. You’re amazing at allowing people to share their stories! Thank you for giving me my new favorite podcast
Just because "everybody" or most people go through similar situations, doesn't mean they should be tolerated or accepted. I am glad she is speaking out about the dark side of work (in general).
This
🥱
Yeah but you click on the video expecting there to be some super-secret experience at a certain workplace and then you get... run of the mill. That's why people are pointing it out.
I’m 55 minutes in and still haven’t gotten to the “Dark Side of Disney”.
“Everyone always said I looked young for my age”
“How old are you?”
“25”
👀👀👀👀👀🤣
Haha, that's what I thought. I'm hitting 40 soon, & 25 is still so young.😀
My thoughts exactly
@@Andrea_k86 she just means she looks younger than 25...
Y'all older people get very defensive
@@tanie3543 Lmao I know what that means! No one is getting defensive, were just stating that 25 is still so young. 🤦🏻♀️
LOL its funny cause no one will understand how funny this is when your over 30. Like 25? no wonder your complaining so much saying your old at 25 xD
Wow I worked at Walmart and it’s shocking to me that the Disney point system is more lax… if we got 5 points we’d get fired. Being late was half a point, absense was one point, and unexcused absence was two I believe? Just crazy. I hated it and didn’t think it was fair and I stand by that, it sucks to feel like three strikes and ur out. Also you had to wait an entire year from the day you got the point to get it removed… just insane
She and I were at the program at the same time. My roommate termed on her second week of deployments before she got her role at festivals, she said she was going back to Walmart because if she was gonna work that hard, she didn't wanna smile all the time
Where is the “dark side” of this story?
I sure can talk 😂 Dev, thank you so much for having me on the podcast! This was such a wonderful (and humbling) experience that I’ll never forget ☺️💖💖💖
I loved cowboys when I lived in Orlando!!!!❤❤❤
I’ve had strange experiences as a cast member that know one understands and I’ve wanted to talk about them publicly because it’s all pretty weary! 😓
This one is the only one I feel like its didnt left me anything lol not even compareble to the other episodes, love you! 👑💐🤗
DCP alum here!!! I absolutely loved my program. That said, I've never clicked on a video so fast. 😂
Same.
Hey dev! Love this episode.
Loving this already
Lol it’s so interesting hearing her talk about things as a local from Orlando. I love cowboys 🤣
Wish she spoke about the actual dark side of Disney and not the shitty workplace, like every other workplace
Really enjoyable episode love hearing about interesting jobs
Crazy hearing Eden, NC! My sister's in laws have lived in Reidsville and surrounding areas for generations.
Funny, because I thought the same thing! My grandma lived there!
Long live Eden
Nice interview. My son and his girlfriend worked with Allie. They work at Epcot and love it.
Very interesting show I really enjoyed it. ❤by the way you’ve been to Disney twice lol😊
I moved to orlando in 2020 and yeah ppl are definitely mad weird here lol especially in downtown O at all the bars. it’s been hard for me to find quality friends here
There’s nothing “dark” about this sounds like any other job.. this was just her complaining about her job for almost 2 hours don’t waste your time y’all
"Dark" doesn’t always mean "sinister", guys.
oh wow 😭 just scrolling through your page bc i saw a diff vid and my friend pops up?! 😭 aw alliecat you go girl
I always forget you’re in Maryland let alone in Baltimore and it blows my mind lmao, I would LOVE to meet you one day, and I’ve been a budtender for a couple years I’d love to spread some knowledge and get interviewed by you
so basically working at an amusement park sucks... much wow, very unexpected
dev you’re doing amazing
You’re one of my favorites, RUclips channel ur amazing 🥰🫶🏼
10 hour shift??!! Oh NO 😱😂😂 welcome to adulting kidddo 😂
Right!!!? 😂
Wow I'm from NC and I was also heavily involved in dance theater the cookout tray after a gig I love her lol
When she said “i look young for my age” i guessed 27😶
Dev was like: SIDE EYEE 😂
Dev was like: SIDE EYEE 😂
More like acts young for her age.
I mean that was at the time. She was saying in 2015... and she does look young. Her features look like she's a teenager her teeth, makeup style etc
I feel like she looks like people who are my age, I would’ve guessed she’s about 20-22
It’s just so so dull. My goodness
Yep, doesn't seem that "dark"
Bunch of Me, Me, Me, and I, I, I.
She's complaining about anything that you would experience at a job that involves physical labor I've never worked in a restaurant where I wasn't made to stand on my feet for at least 8 hours sometimes 12
People are best friends in two weeks...never understood that.
Possibly she could work at a child's salon doing hair styles?! Or do children's parties doing hair styles?! Just a thought
Where was the dark part? This was just a regular retail horror story…
I couldn't imagine my first job being at Disney.
Great interview! When she said her age, it made me laugh because she's still so young. I'll be 40 soon, & 25 is definitely young still lol. I wish her all the best in her life. I also live in Florida, so I enjoyed hearing her story.💗
25 is still young in theory but societal messaging towards women is seriously messing with their heads. this society makes it seem as if if you’re a woman over 25, it’s all downhill from there.
I’d hate to see her reaction to working at a complicated corporate job. She is complaining about working in a Disney role? And she had one of the fun roles. 🙄🙄🙄
I’m not going to listen to this podcast anymore due to misleading, clickbait titles. This person straight up loves Disney there is nothing dark about it.
I’ve done the Disney College Program back in 2015, and yes they do over work you and yes some days I felt like it was hell bc you basically have to be on your feet for 10 hrs a day, then take a bus to your apartment at 1am while there’s a thunder storm, then wake up and do it all over again 😂 but honestly I loved my experience there bc you meet so many ppl from all over the world, you get to experience a little bit of adult hood bc you’re away from your parents and you learn how to be responsible , they teach you how to be a hard working employee (they will not accept lazy sht or they will send your ass home) , they were very strict and they expect you to be almost perfect bc perfection doesn’t exist but you dam near had to be perfect and that reason for that is bc Disney wanted every guest to experience the magic of Disney and leave with a beautiful memory. So we treated every single person like they were kings and queens bc Disney knows that the better you treat someone the better they will feel and the more they will spend 😂😂😂 .
Anyways I don’t regret the program no matter how hard it got sometimes. i learned a lot from it and it was a beautiful place to work at. Personally I don’t hold anything bad against the Disney college program. It’s an amazing program that teaches young adults how to be professional, hard working, responsible, and kind no matter how hard life gets. I personally think those are good values bc now days kids are crazy and lazy af.
Emphasizes the last word in most her sentences
are they getting paid for their hours? this just feels like a scam to me
Yeah…this ain’t the dark side of Disney like the title suggests- it’s just the first half liking her job and half complaining just like a major majority of people do in their jobs! Bit click bait imo!
as someone who lives in orlando they do not care about underage drinking
where is the “dark side” here, exactly? how is this any different than any other service industry/retail job?
She is so full of life 🥰💖
Yeah, that tends to happen when things come so easily to someone. They have yet to die inside. But that comes after life fucks you of course. See, the universe itself plots against your every hope and dream, killing you a bit more inside with every dream shot down. Lol, ahhhh youth!
This girl taking about her first minimum wage job likes she’s the CEO of NASA.
I know Eden it’s close to where I live crazy how many people from NC end up working at Disney lol
North Carolina does manual background checks. So everyone else can get immediate turnaround for background checks as it’s in an online database. But NC for whatever reason has people manually researching data.
I am always absolutely shocked (even now) by how HORRIBLE people behave to anyone in a “serving” position…
As an ex cast member myself (international program, from Norway) the darkest parts were how corrupt some of the security guards were, like they would overlook drugs (and confiscate - to use themselves or plant in other apartments if the stories are true) in some apartments where they liked the residents. Also giving people 24 hours to leave the country if you did something wrong- could be anything from stealing a sandwich to just holding an alcoholic beverage if under 21. Oh, and if security knocked on your door- no matter if it’s 2 in the morning- if you are not covered when opening the door (I mean top and bottom regardless of gender) that would reprimand you. Idk I had a good time there 😅
Honestly I totally understand that cast members don't make enough money for all they do. But that is pretty much any job. It sounds like she is just young and hasn't had much experience in working. Yes it is fucked that people get treated badly but it is like that in any field you will go in. The best you can do is find something you love and a work place you enjoy and can ignore the toxic person.
Her experience is so much like mine- wow. I was at the same apartment complex in 2017!
36:29 I was at Disney springs this week we had to go straight into quarantine afterwards it was wild
