Thank you. This helped me understand troubleshooting the system better. My problem ended up being the 4WD vacuum switch in the engine compartment. Picked up one from the junk yard for a couple bucks. I have the 5 speed version without the push button.
Hey, i just put 4 new shifter bushings by removing the shifter. But now my 4x4 wants to grind going from 4hi to 4lo, then i try to put it back to 4hi and it grinds. Have any idea why it would act like this? It was working smooth before the movement. All connections are solid ,cables good. And it goes to every shift P R N D 2 L.. no problems. I always put it in N to engage 4lo, but now it grinds and wont go in. 4hibon the fly works, just wont go back in after i try to put in 4lo.
I have the same problem with my 2002. So here's my question. How do you get the wrench to the 2 solenoids you speak of in the video? They are so close to the bottom of the cabin that I can't get the wrench around either of them.
I have 2000 same 2 switches. No room for 27mm socket to fit have 27mm oxegen socket to not cut wires. going to take out seat and drimmer a hole from top inside to replace any other ideas.
Yeah the solenoids seem very hard to remove honestly, mine did not have to get replaced it was just my harness that was damamged. Do u hear a clicking noise st all near the glove box area when you put it into 4wd?
Don't hear anything. Ill focus on the glove box next time is there a connector behind the glove box? I took out seat was going to cut hole below console area but structural support in way. All that great asfault sheeting for sound deadening Toyota quit using a long time ago. Will have to drop drive shaft and transfer case to get at sensors which I have no interest doing without a lift. A lot of work to test and replace switches. Uncle!
HELP !!!! Can someone point me in the right direction in resolving my 98 4Runner issue? When I engage 4H it goes in silent but when it goes back to 2H (disengage) there is a loud bang (like a sled hammer bang). The is a delay for about 30 second to disengage as I drive down the road below 25mph. The 4wd light indicator goes on when I press the button and it goes off when I depress the button, the light never blinks. My other 4Runner does a loud click only. I don't know the history on the car but I have changed all the oil already.
Hi I have a 1996 4runner and which with our problems is once we press the button to engage the front diffuser you can hear it transferr case but it's not engaging and also the light isn't on So I was wondering if that was the same problem as yours
Sorry for the late reply, no it's not the same problem. I dont have a button to engage anything for the 4wd. The 1996 sr5 only have the shifter which would active the 4wd once engauged.
Sorry for such a late response, but both wheels will spin and different times depending on terrain. These do not have a front locking diff from the factory so it will not spin at the same time.
@@s_peazy5501 so if both passenger wheels spin and I'm stuck in 4 wheel drive that's normal on an un level surface/ train which puts most of the weight on the driver side wheels... that's odd for me.. was hoping someone was going to tell me some locking mechanism needed to be investigated.... would changing diff fluid ( probably has 130k miles on it ) help what I thought limited slip was suppose to not allow?

I have a similar issue with my 97 limited, the light doesn't some on at all so I thought it might be the plugs but they're working fine and I still haven't figured out the problem.
@@TrinityReptiles nope, it's driving me nuts but it's still and able machine in 2wd. As far as I can tell it's a vacuum/electric issue probably something to do with the 4wd module and the vsv
Its the factory color, it's called " Stellar Blue Pearl" ...its more of a purple /blue. I guess it was kinda rare on 3rd gens but i see them kinda often. They came on older tundras as well.
Hey man I'm having the same problem really not sure what it is we've gone over most things actuator , vaccuum lines , most electrical but I'm unsure if the solenoid is bad ? Mine only seems to work when it's warm and it's getting cold in Canada already seen -20 days , just wondering how you knew it was that solenoid and also how would you test it ? Thanks in advance man
D May I've actually read on the 4runner forums from people that lived in really cold climates having the same problem. My solenoid wasn't bad, it was actually my harness going to them that had broken clips and wires. I replaced them and now it's fine. im not sure how your 4wd selector is but mine does not have a button to engage, it's just the shifter. If you move the shifter from 2wd to 4wd and hear a clicking noise coming from the glove box area then your solenoids are fine. My 4wd light doesn't come on right away always, sometimes I'll put it into 4wd and actually have to drive 2 or 3 feet for it to engage. I hope this helps bro, let me know how it goes!
S_peazy ya man we've tested the relay under the glove box passenger side also , and it's the vaccuum ADD like yours not electronic. Only thing we really haven't checked is the air tank , we've tested all lines and cut back / replaced a few vaccuum lines but nothing
D May damn... Well sounds to me like you pretty much narrowed it down to the solenoid being the problem I'm sure. Try to see if you can find some used ones to test if possible

No problem, glad it helped! I had to figure it out on my own and it drove me nuts.
He doesn't have a push button either 🙋

Hey! Was your 4wd light coming on when you started the truck before you fixed the solenoid?
My problem was not the solenoid, it was a broken wire harness. And being that my 4x4 was NOT working, my light would NOT come on
If your light is coming on, your 4x4 should be engaging.
@@s_peazy5501 my light flashes when I turn my switch to engage, should it flash or should it stay on? 🤔
