Another tip: Many dual techs are actually shadow elemental. The game never calls this out, but when it's not abundantly clear which element is used in a tech, it's shadow.
Hey David I second this, was just about to suggest the same thing to you! Would love to see a FF6 video in this style going over for example, the best stats to raise for each character to maximize their individual skills (and which Espers to provide those bonuses), and also which treasures/items power up if you wait until World of Ruin to grab them.
I think i used more than 2 Phoenix Down to revive my allies who were fighting against Phantom Train, i also spend a bunch of other itens, but after some days i found i could use one in Phantom Train and kill it
That's not needed I'll always fight Ultros the first time AT lv 36 get the first ESPERS like at lv 50 for Locke Sabin Gau and Celes and by lv 99 STILL did 9999 per Ultima as long as Cyan isn't USING it.
Here's a tip for FF6: Treat espers like single-use items. If Terra gets Alexander, no other character is allowed to use Alexander. This prevents you from having an entire party with maxed stats who all know every single spell. With magic more rare, you learn to appreciate lesser-used abilities like Lore and Throw, and you enjoy the game a lot more. In my humble opinion, this is how the game should have been made to begin with.
When I was a teenager, I used Marle all the time. I liked her as a character. Even though her single techs are lacking, her dual techs are fine. That said, as I grew older, her Haste spell became the primary reason to use her for me. In boss fights, it's worth taking the time to haste the entire party with her and get a ton more turns. Late game when everyone has much higher speed (or haste helmets), it's not really worth using her anymore, but I think she shines in boss fights throughout the midgame and early late game with that. Nowadays, I use her until I get Haste, then I usually only bring her out in boss fights, or if I can full clear encounters with her first dual tech with Frog.
I couldn't say it any better! I was the opposite though, where I didn't use her much when I was a child, but everything you said is spot on! Haste is a top tier spell, and she has so many good double techs. -Aura whirl -Ice water -Antipode 1,2,3 -Ice Sword -Ice Tackle -Ice Toss & Cube Toss -Double Cure Objectively she's not as over-powered as the other characters, but I'd say she's still very good for normal playthroughs. You just need to make sure to use her techs to get the most out of her, which I found to be very fun and satisfying as I replayed as an adult. *Spoiler alert* Not to mention that she's a great character. I mean, she was the one that came up with the idea of stopping Lavos and convinced Chrono and Lucca that they need to save the world! It would have been nice if they gave her an ultimate ice spell above Ice 2 and had her magic attack grow like Lucca, given how Marle's lineage is so central to the plot.
I'd say she's still strong late game since she's required for the Lifeline triple tech, which is probably the most busted support/defense tech in the game. Marle's in a weird spot, since the rest of the cast is pretty self sufficient, but outside of Haste support, Marle pretty much relies entirely on dual/triple techs to be useful. But, her dual/triple techs are some of the best in the game, so she's actually pretty strong with the right party lineup. While Crono, Robo and Ayla are in a league of their own, I think Marle is honestly the most useful of the remaining party members.
Only point I'd disagree with is the one about Marle sucking. Marle isn't bad, the game really doesn't have any "bad" characters. You can really play with any party setup you want. Her heals are far stronger than those of Frog or Robo which is balanced by the fact she only heals one at a time. She also has haste and Life 2 for perfect revivals, something you can't get anywhere else. Now sure, to long time players, people have found others more optimal. But saying because one character is preferred to blast through the game more means another character sucks is just wrong. I'd only say someone sucks if the character truly provides almost nothing of value. When we've been playing these games for decades it's easy to forget what it's like for someone brand new to the game. It's one of the reasons I love CT so much, every party combo is very well balanced and always provides something good.
She is not the best alone attacker, but her dual combo are pretty powerfull! I agree with protohunters. She cast with Chronor the 2 Ice Swords, she cast with Lucca 3 antipodes, she cast with Ayla Cube Toss and Ice Toss that are very powerful. She also has habilities with Frog that are very powerfull too. Cheer up!
Take the Swallow as you can steal the Safe Helm later. Take 3 Prism Helms and steal from Queen Zeal in order of 1000, 600 and then magic era. You get 6 Prism Helms and 3 Prism Dresses this way. Don't kill Magus/Janus.
Take advantage of your save slots (or save states if you use an emulator). The charm of this game is in part seeing all the different possibilities that this game could take. I usually keep Magus alive but defeat him once (one-on-one with Frog) and check out that ending. Bring all the different characters to the top of Death Peak to see their reactions or don't go at all. I did not know until about a year ago that there is different dialogue and music if you bring Magus to fight Queen Zeal in the Black Omen.
Swallow STILL sucks so still chose the Safe Helm besides WITHOUT THAT Safe helm odds are the needle counter will either do 700+ damage to Ayla when trying to steal the Safe Helm or just kill her outright as soon as you steal it.
Tho no need in 6 helms, 3 is enough cause you can use only 3 characters, and this way you will have exactly 1 helm for each character. 3 dresses is another thing, maybe you REALLY about to use 3 girls for fun or some sht, idk
Spot on, David! You touched many bases, many tips I usually give to new users. I'd add: don't sleep on Ayla's charm tech to steal often overlooked equipment, starting from the Mountain of Woe and going forward. Also, Falcon Hit. Just. Falcon Hit.
No Golem twins counter all physical hits so have Crono/Ayla BOTH absorbs fIre damage have Lucca hit BOTH with Fire 2 then you'll NEVER die as long as NO Physical hit besides Charm hits them but after Charm hits either one IMMEDIATELY use Fire Sword 2 on ithem.
Yes even at 5000 per Knight I still had NOTHING outdamage it in FF7 and while I won't EVER play the FF7 REMAKE due to likely ONLY finishing it as a PS5 game KoTR still BETTER be usable ON Carry armor for the Remake despite me never going to play it.
I already done it 1 month ago. So, it never too late to start to play Chrono Trigger. Gonna play again at new game+ for more items, tabs, dimensional vortex and endings because I only got 1 canonical ending with Crono alive and Epoch didn't destroyed.
I mean, really, why would you pick anyone other than Chrono, Robo, and Ayla? Well, there's that whole bit where Chrono is absent... then it's Frog/Robo/Ayla. Robo and Ayla are just too good, they make the rest of the team look like chumps. Even Magus wound up being very underwhelming, as much as they hype him being so strong, he ends up being kinda "meh" because he has to use magic, which just isn't as good as physical attacks most of the time, and there's very few instances where you'd really need to use it. And if you did need magic, Chrono's Luminaire usually does way more damage anyhow.
Another tips: Spekkio changes his form whenever the leading character's level in your party turns 10,20,30,40,and **, so make sure you get back to the End of Time to fight him whenever Crono's (or anyone in the leading position) level turns 9, 19, 29, 39 to collect fancy items
it took me like 20 years to realize I'd never seen his first form. When it comes to RPGs I have a tendency of overleveling to cruise through the fights and just enjoy the story... There are always consequences lol
I've been making an effort of going through my back log this year as I built up quite a backlog over the pandemic (and panic buying a lot of games on PS3 when they threatened store closure), but this is a game that always has a part of me wanting to replay it. I was too young to play it back in the day (SMRPG being my very first RPG) and didn't play it until it's DS release. I have it on steam now, so maybe again soon ... Always glad to see you speaking and promoting this era of gaming so hard! Thanks and have a great day yourself!
I love that you work so hard to keep the torch of the Golden Age of JRPGs lit, and Chrono Trigger is a real gem, for sure. I would add just a couple of tips to the list here: 1.) When crossing the ruins presided over by Johnny and the bots, go through on foot at least once, and GET THE RACING LOG. You can't win Johnny's prizes without it, and he gives you an easy way to stockpile various consumables and pick up a couple tabs of different varieties of you get good (only once each on the tabs, though 😢). 2. Abilities on gear trumps stats, and special stats trump regular stats, basically every time, if there is even a remote parity between the gear otherwise. 3. Don't be afraid to use your MP, but don't go spraying spells around like you're some arcane incarnation of Tony Montana, either. In this game, EFFICIENCY is your best friend.
I never played it when it was first released, so I’d love a remake. I do own it on PC but I never played SNES as my first console was PS1. So would love to play it in graphics nowadays
As much as I want this, with what Square is pushing out now, I do not want them to touch this classic. It would become a devil may cry action game. I am not a fan of the last 3 final fantasy games (7 remake, 15, and 16). I feel Square would just use this action game design with this classic. I would like for some things to remain sacred and to leave them as the masterpiece it is.
I hope so WITH the DS extra dungeons in them but NOT the USELESS arena battles btw to KEEP the Power Glove/Scarf that Frog and Ayla first join with remove those by giving Frog and Ayla a completely USELESS accessory that that Crono/Robo can equip those. As in give Frog a WORTHLESS accessory after Yakra is killed BEFORE your WARPED back to Guardia Castle in 600 AD and give Frog's Power Glove TO Robo do the same for Ayla transfer HER Power scarf to Robo or Crono BEFORE the Nizabel boss fight she first leaves the party AFTER the boss is killed so you need to remove the Power Scarf off of her BEFORE the battle. Magic on ROBO SUCKS Slurp Kiss ONLY costs 1 MP on BOTH Frog and Ayla while easily restoring 999 HP once you REACH the Black Omen I barely had Heal Beam for Robo Top even 250 PER use WITH 36 MAGIC stats.
I have been avoiding almost all of your Hints and Tips videos due to wanting to go in most of these games blind but Chrono has been a part of my life since I was first able to play 20 years ago. Love it. My tip - Ayla is the character I love to use almost all the time because of her charm ability that steals items, tabs, and even some good armor and weapons from enemies. I never really use Robo except when necessary so I may have to give him a try next time I play.
I would like to bring some points in favor to Marle, for those who like to find use on the "weakests" members of the team and say that Marle's charm is in her combined techs: - Marle and Ayla can steal rare and precious objects that would otherwise be very hard to use. Plus, if you have them both, you can pseudo-replace MT healing by casting cure (which normally heals almost all HP to a party member) and Ayla with her kiss. - Marle and Luca are a good alternative for Shadow damage with their Antipode tech early on. Yes, Robo exist, but he's not really magic inclined at the beginning and if you're fighting only one enemy. is best to use a individual tech rather than an AoE - Marle is the only way to get Haste before getting the almost late-game vests that apply that effect. - Life 2 helps a lot in the late game as well, since normally enemies would knock u out again if you use a Revive. For me, Marle comes as a support that you should use wisely, but not so much as a healer or damage dealer. That's perhaps why she is not so popular between the community; cuz she's being used as a role that perhaps wasn't really meant to her
Marle's support is ridiculous, Haste is a huge asset, and her Dual and Triple Techs are just some of the best in the game, Aura Whirl is clutch in the beginning of the game. Of course, Triple Techs are not efficient like Crono's Falcon Hit, but you get my drift, you can always run Crono, Ayla, and Marle.
Marle's dual tech damage is insane. You get Ice Tackle with Robo very early which does crazy damage. Ice Water can carry you throughout the entirety of Magus' castle. Ice/Cube Toss with Ayla, Cube Toss does monstrous damage early late game. Also Antipode spells. You can keep Marle in your party the entire game and have solid cures, utility, and damage. I think people crap on Marle because she doesn't have an ultimate attack to spam like Shock or Flare.
Exactly my thoughts. Besides the fact that her individual techs are nothing to sleep on neither, she is a complementary member of the party with almost any formation since her combined techs are really useful or really high in damage/healing. I feel like perhaps she was made to shine in the department of combined techs and support, since other characters are so inclined to do heavy damage in some way or another (like everybody having an ultimate tech despite their main role)
I’m currently playing my snes cart of this game I bought on eBay for $40 when I was 10 lol so great to see there’s still so much love for this masterpiece
Marle can at least dual cast antipode 3 with Lucca. That’s pretty powerful. I mean she still sucks, but at least she has that. Also, do the Black Omen going backwards. Like do the present first, then go back in time. That way you can do it multiple times and steal plenty of speed tabs for everyone.
lol marle isn't sucks she's in my main team with ayla her haste skill is op it makes your party do 2-3 moves before enemy attack again and her combine tech with others is op too.
There is exactly one boss fight where Marie shines better than Frog. The twin golem fight right before a certain important story moment at the bottom of the ocean palace. Marle will have access to ice 2 and haste, in a period of time where Frog will not have access to his strongest techs, and no one has access to a haste helm. The entire premise of the fight is to keep switching between attack styles to confuse the golems into not attacking (they copy the last used attack style, and do very little damage with their first attack, unless it’s a physical attack). Marle has the perfect role of spamming haste and ice 2, while crono spams lightning 2, to distract the golems while ayla takes away their items (magic tabs). For one brief, but glorious moment, Marle is an optimal character choice. Aaaaaaaaand then it’s over haha.
About that BOTH Frog and Marle suck have Ayla/Crono LV 40 with the Red Mail (Plate) and Red vest equipped have Lucca hit BOTH Golems with Fire 2 immediately once those can ONLY use Fire 2 spells you'll NEVER die/lose the fight. As of Mt Woe Marle starts to SUCK for the rest of the game.
For the Golem twins, I actually end up using Lucca more. They can be put to sleep via Hypnowave and it removes one from the fight entirely. You can then focus on one twin, making sure not to end one of the attacks with physical or lightning.
He is heal beam sucks when Slurp Kiss Frog/Ayla's healing 2x healing tech easily restores 999 HP by the time you start the black omen itself and it only costs 1 MP even with all the FIXED Magic tabs on Robo heal beam on a 1st run will still never restore 999 HP Robo's 2x and 3x techs kind of suck anyways.
You can lvl up Chrono and marle early at the festival. Go fight the robo cat a few dozen times gain xp to lvl as well as silver coins you can exchange for gold and buy better weapons/gear or just save your money until you need it...
Mr David I did not know about the treasure chest trick I finally got the plate for the PlayStation when it was re-released and I enjoyed the game and I went in it without even having a strategy guide. And there's still a lot of things that I did not know about the game recently as well a few weeks back cuz me like a true RPG gamer I focus mostly on just leveling up never not the other the skill point system. But I always try to balance out my characters who are lacking in other skills by giving them the booster points items when you find them. Thank you greatly appreciate. David
The speed cap is actually 16, not 15. Plus, Swallow sword is +3 speed. Slasher is +2. :3 As far as advice: 1. Harvest those Nus in the Hunting Grounds ASAP (30 tech points each). They'll be your best source for tech points from before Heckran to the Tyrano lair. From there, head to Mt. Woe. Partway up is a Rubble that respawns and they're worth 100 tech points each; be sure to learn all your techs before beating it as you can't come back. As for Magus, there are plenty of better areas like the Geno Dome conveyor fights. 2. When you get access to Geno Dome, build up to level 63 or so. You need max magic defense for the final boss and at that point even the characters who are the worst in that stat will be able to bridge the gap with equipment. 3. Do not boost Robo's base speed any higher than 13. In Geno Dome, after fighting the miniboss 1-on-1, Robo will get a permanent stat upgrade of 3 speed points and 10 magic defense points. 4. Don't buy equipment in the Earthbound Village. See below. 5. Learn Ayla's Charm ASAP! In the Reptite's lair, the very first dungeon you have with her, you can use Charm to steal weapons that are far better than anything else you can get for a while. Same goes for Mt. Woe., it's better weapons than the Earthbound Village sells and they're free. Plus, a lot of bosses have magic and speed tabs/capsules that you can steal. Plus, the Black Omen is a treasure trove including a metric ton of one-time-only battles where you can steal speed tabs/capsules. Steal from everything! 6. Don't be too quick to gain levels. Every 10 levels until you hit Level 40, Spekkio at the end of time changes his form and each form you defeat the first time offers a different reward. However, you'll lose that if you level up too much. The 0-9 level bracket isn't worth it, but they get better. 40-98 includes one of each tab/capsule while Level 99 offers 10 of each.
The Swallow SUCKS as soon as you OPEN its chest always CHOSE the Safe/Guardian helm even if you don't use Marle/Lucca in the Black Omen that helm will still last you for the entire game the Swallow is likely to BE REPLACED as soon as yo enter Mt Woe which is the next required area you go to AFTER you get the Swallow making the Swallow useless as soon as you get it. Lv 63 isn't needed even on the PS1/SNES version I beat Lavos Black Omen first visit Crono Frog Ayla lv 50 to lv 55 (around lv 60+) on the DS version due to ALL of lv ups you'll likely get DURING the ENTIRE lost sanctum quests.
@@veghesther3204 Actually, you don't find a stronger blade than the Swallow until after the Epoch gains its wings. Until then, the +3 Speed is REALLY handy. I usually don't bother with the helmet because 1. I tend to get Vigil Hats/Prism Helms ASAP for status protection and 2. You can steal a safe/Guardian helm from the Elder Lavos Spawn in the Black Omen. :3
Except DAMAGE wise the Swallow still SUCKS the Safe Helm is still good for the entire game BEFORE Vigil Hats/Prism Helms can be equipped Marle/Lucca won't actually Survive Grand Stone Lavos' WORST attack form 3 without Safe/Guardian helms on BOTH of them. If you can afford the 65,000 Gold cost weapon via the shop outside Heckran's Cave with that equipped on Crono like against Magus to Giga Gaia on Mt Woe the Swallow Damage wise still SUCKS and is still NOT worth it.
@@veghesther3204 The Swallow Sword has a base attack of 145. For comparison, the Star Sword/Empyrean Blade found in Ocean Palace has an attack power of only 125 and the Yaksha Blade/Vedic Blade found on Death peak has an attack power of 135. :3 The only weapons that are stronger than the Swallow Sword can't be found until you are able to fly around freely. Those are the Onimaru/Kali Blade in the Northern Ruins (150), the Slasher II stolen from Super Slash in Ozzie's Fort (155), the Icewyrm forged in the Lost Sanctum of the DS version (160), The Suzaku/Shiva Edge from the Northern Ruins (170), the Rainbow from the Rainbow Shell and Sun Stone forging (220), and the Dream Seeker won from getting the extra ending in the DS version (240). :3
Swallow still sucks its only useful for Mt Woe/Ocean Palace and that's IT the Safe/Guardian helm if you get IT out of that chest is still useful for the ENTIRE GAME/BEFORE you can get the 3x Prism helms if you do the quest to get those helms as late in game as possible.
The first two are just wrong lol #1 sure CT isn't a game you have to really grind to beat but making sure to get some extra exp will make it much easier. You don't want to just skip out on all the exp unless you're prepared to really strategize and nail bite some fights. There are a few spots where if you spend just a little bit of time getting experience it makes the game just that much easier and enjoyable imo. Exp has always seemed more important than Tech Points. The skills will come if you grind even just a bit. There's never really bosses I'm wafting on a skill to get besides Haste from Marle which brings me to my next point. #2 Marle is the best character to have in your team until you get to end game imo. Her haste spell is invaluable alone. It's just so freaking great, it makes fights a breeze. Sure, she doesn't have a party heal but team her up with just about anyone and you have a full team party heal that you don't have to dump a bunch of magic tabs into for. Plus she has some amazing double techs with just about everyone. Iceberg Toss, Ice sword, Ice tackle, Antipode, Ice water especially for Magus castle. Her life 2 spell is pretty nice as well.
I love that you're extending this series to classics as well! I actually didn't use Robo much on my first playthrough, next time I run through, I'll be sure to give him a good ol' stack of Magic Tabs xD
Not sure if anyone said this but in magus’ castle is where you will gain the most points. In the beginning I usually bring Chrono’s level up to like 20 in the forest then purchase the sword in the shop in the beginning. It makes life easier.
One thing I remember was how absurdly powerful Robo's Crisis Arm was as it did incredible damage if his current HP was within 10% of his total maximum total, meaning it was broken if he had 90% or more and 10% left of getting knocked out. His turbo punch was a single target wrecking ball with the Crisis Arm.
Marle is the best in the game if you gain Haste, her heals are way stromger then Frog's,& also there is one thing you lacked to make her super important. There are certain enemies, strewn through out the game, that you can steal all the tabs from with Ayla plus on that note you can just max out all stats to double stars so you can just wail on the game with any combination team you see fit.
more tips: Heal outside of battle so you're always prepared for the next fight by using techs like Marle's Aura. its cheap and saves up tonics/potions. Stock up on shelters for that purpose too. And try not to run from too many battles. it will help with gaining EXP and TP.
After beating this game for the second time just yesterday, I gotta say this game is truly awesome despite how easy it is. The replay value is just as good too. I’m gonna play it again but with different characters
My Personal Tip: to become very broken very early, abuse the Hunting Range when you are sent to 65MBC to get the metal to repair the Masamune. Go to the Hunting Range, and memorize the route that takes you counter-clockwise around the area, and if done right you should be able to get up on the ledge before it rains. Once it starts raining, it's not too hard to run past 3-4 Nu spawn points, and hopefully the Nu is standing at one of them. The Nu might be a little harder at this point in the game, but he's not too bad, just don't let anybody standing around with 1HP. You get a whopping 30 TP for defeating it (get Robo's Heal Beam early with this!). Take all of those feathers, horns, etc to the trader, and buy the item that wants the top and bottom, and the item that wants the 2 middle, and take those and sell them at any shop. Keep doing this, and you can then go to 1000AD Medina village and buy the Demon Edge. This weapon does devastating damage against Nus and Magus himself. In Magus's 2nd phase, X-Cut does ludicrous amounts of damage and you can speed through it in about 3-4 of those. I actually have a playthrough that shows some of this, if anyone is curious.
A few more quick CT tips... Endings: if you're going for "all endings", you can snag almost all of them in your second playthrough, rather than going through the entire game for each one (I'd still follow a walkthrough). There is one that requires a party of Crono and Marle which is easier to pull off on your THIRD playthrough, and "The Developer Room" ending can also be completed with Marle in the party, making that one a bit easier. You can also get this ending by defeating Lavos in the Ocean Palace, though that is bar none the toughest fight in the game. Massive damage: Forget about leveling Ayla up to 99! Just give Robo the Crisis Arm, have the last digit in his HP be 9 (a fully-healed high-level Robo has 999 HP), and have him and Ayla perform Beast Toss, which uses Uzzi Punch. You'll easily do well over 2000 damage per use; I've had it go over 5000, which can absolutely destroy bosses! Even more massive damage: Dino Tail and Frog Squash are conditional attacks that require low HP to use optimally. The first Zeal fight regularly shaves all but 1 HP off your party, and little else, so Frog and Ayla can demolish her. Put Magus in the party for some additional dialogue (and his theme song playing for the third fight)! The Masamune also does special damage to the Mammon Machine, so there's no reason to leave Frog out of these fights. Levels: if you simply must level-grind, do it in the Black Omen. There's an elevator section where you can fight multiple battles, many of which give you over 2000 exp. You can re-fight this sequence as many times as you want, and you get three opportunities to go through the entire Black Omen (12000 BC, 600 AD, and 1000 AD). Additionally, Prism Helms and Prism Dresses can be Charmed from Zeal's hands, so you can effectively get SIX helmets or FOUR dresses in one playthrough. Fritz: if you free Fritz from the guillotine in the Guardia dungeons following the trial, he gives you some free stuff when you see him again in town. I feel like a lot of people miss this. Unlimited shelters: I feel like everyone knows this, but just in case, if you investigate the rustling bush in Guardia Forest (1000 AD), a monster jumps out and drops a Shelter. If you go out to the world map and come back, you can grab another shelter from the same place. You can do this as many times as you want.
get charm with ayla the first time she joins your party and you can steal later game weapons and armor from the enemies there, and also farm them to sell to get the expensive stuff in medina , and i feel like a lot of people dont know this, you can re enter the shop multiple times and the prices will vary to a point its not that ridiculous to buy them and its a huge boost at that time if you get those items
I didn't find out about powering up the chests until years later. It also applies to the chests in the ruins where Cyrus is buried. You get Marle's strongest weapon, Crono's second strongest weapon, and the Moonbeam armor (men's strongest armor) that way. (This is the SNES version, folks) Also, I wound up giving Fenixdown83 info valuable enough he gave me a shoutout on his Chrono Trigger Let's Play. When you fight Lavos, have Lucca and Robo together with Robo in the third slot. Their Double Bomb dual tech does the highest damage on the piece you need to kill in order to beat Lavos.
Moon armor still SUCKS I prefer the haste helm + Nova armor on Crono Frog Robo and on the DS remake you CAN get 3 HASTE helms BEFORE fighting Lavos in the Black omen itself. But for the DS versions post game even the Nova armor kind of sucks. Double Bomb I'll never use to make sure Grand Stone doesn't 1 shot the party still use Frog/Ayla 999 HP restore Slurp kisses if you have less then 850 HP left BEFORE Grand Stone hits you. That and when its middle party uses the cut your HP by half BOTH Dino Tail and Frog Squash CAN do MORE damage then Double Bomb anyways. Lucca would barely survive Grand Stone that's why her and Marle SUCK against Lavos IN the Black Omen itself.
@@veghesther3204 I pretty always heal after Grand Stone which Lavos would only use once a battle on me if that. Since it's the last part of the last boss once my megaelixirs does the trick. Which is why I never bothered with Dino Tail or Frog Squàsh. You equip what you like and I equip what I like.
Actually Zeal's first form just loves to drop the parties HP to 1 EVERY turn that's why I USED BOTH Dino Tail and Frog Squash and soon as Lavos' 3rd form uses the CUT party members HP by half attack I used both BEFORE using 1 of the 40+ Mega Elixers I stole. The Moon armor still sucks though by lv 60 you won't even need it.
Don't forgot about getting the Rainbow Shell, it gives you one of the best accessories in the game or Chrono's best sword in the game, as well as the best armor for everyone. Prism Helms for the WIN!
5 great points. I'd like to comment on em. 1) The game really does balance EXP for you, because inactive party members always receive 75% of all EXP. "Inactive" includes those who've "left" the party, such as Marle when she gets teleported (and completely disappears from existence): she still receives 75% all the Exp you get from the Cathedral fights, for instance. 2) I'd say Haste is one of Marle's saving graces (but you really need to plan your strategy around it). 3) Powered vs non-powered up chests don't give much advantage. Completionists should use Ayla's Charm on bosses and rare enemies! 4/5) Speed tabs are OP, since leveling does not increase the speed stat. Max speed is 16 (and max buffed-speed is 24). Magic tabs: Since magic damage is almost always based on the formula "Character Level plus Magic Stat", 1 magic tab is paltry compared to leveling up just once.. Unless the character's magic stat does not naturally grow much. So I think you nailed it suggesting Robo.
My tip would be something like... Make sure to look back through the eras and the End of Time as the game progresses, as there are side quests that give some really good gear right when they're first available. You can do them later, but their gear is way more pivotal if you catch them when they're fresh! Some of this gear, like the ones available from Robo Saves the Forest quest can let you defeat Lavos on the first encounter even in without NG+ and over grinding!
About that even with the desert quest done I still had its opening attack at lv 40 to 45 1 shot the party their but not even a LV 60 party with Vigil hats on a 1st run would still survive it either.
@@veghesther3204 Level 44+ should live through it no problem unless you bring Lucca/Marle(don't). After that it's just a matter of applying the Shield/Barrier items while spamming Slurp Kiss (party pretty much has to be Crono, Ayla, and Frog due to limited speed tabs and needing max speed). Crono does the bulk of the damage, and Frog or Ayla do appreciable damage with Rageband counters (only one of them, though).
Except at lv 45 even with Vigil Hats Frog Ayla and Crono are still like to take over 999 damage before you get a SINGLE attack off or use Shield items since its worst attacks are physical based. At the time I had Slurp kiss inside the Ocean Palace only top around 600 HP it does MORE Then that if it doesn't kill everyone outright at the start of the battle and with 30,000 HP and NOT ENOUGH Gold studs odds are Crono would run out of TP faster if it doesn't kill you outright at lvs over 45. On a NG+ run lv 60+ I STILL had it do at least 700 damage EVERY turn with Prism Helms equipped which is why on a first run it almost always kills everyone immediately before you get even 1 turn so the Green Dream accessory is still worthless it only auto revives you ONCE per battle. Besides I ended the Golem Twins with only like 45,000 gold left Vigil hats cost 50,000 each but are still worthless if you still take 999 damage at lv 45 before you get even 1 attack off.
@@veghesther3204 Bro, you go unhinged about this every time everywhere. Go watch the 16th video in my CT LP where I do it at level 46, 44, 46 with Aeon Suits and Vigil Hats.
Its still NOT worth it since even if you win you still can't save the game for the 2nd and 3rd battles and Grand Stone at lv 45 can still easily 1 shot you WITH Vigil hats on all if its ever used.
A few more tips, and also a few counter-points to the video: *1)* Between leveling up and tabs, most characters can max out, or at least _mostly_ max, their "core" stats. Eg. Chrono will easily max Atk, Robo easily maxes Defense, etc. Frog is one of the few who doesn't max Atk by lvl 99; he _only_ gets to *98* Atk naturally by max Lvl... _oh no..._ Magus, in fact, is the _only_ character who can take a stat *over* 99; his MDef maxes at 110! So you usually don't need to give, for example, Power Tabs to a character like Chrono or Ayla, since they gain so much natural Atk _already._ Save the Power tabs for characters who _need_ Atk, but *don't* gain much naturally, like Frog; _maybe_ Magus if you want more Scythe action. *2)* On that note, many characters have "odd" quirks regarding the Magic stat. For example, Ayla's Steal chance for Charm depends on her Magic stat. So higher Magic gives her better Steal chances. Also, her Tail-Spin deals Non-Elemental Magic damage and is based on her Magic stat, but it *doesn't* interact with Element resistances, absorption, or weaknesses at all. So if you want a stronger Tail-Spin and Charm, give her some Magic Tabs. *3)* But an even _better_ candidate for Magic Tabs is Chrono. His final skill, Luminaire, has the highest Magic Multiplier of _any_ Single-Tech; in other words, it gains more damage per point of Magic than any other spell, _even Dark Matter!_ But that's just compensation for Chrono's naturally _low_ Magic stat; he's _mainly_ a physical speed-based fighter with some magic to round him out. But if you exploit that high multiplier by force-feeding him MTabs, his Luminaire can become absolutely _stupid strong!_ *4)* The Rage Band, and later the Frenzy Band, allow a character to Counter-Attack. And there are some interesting ways this can be exploited. In the fight against Magus, give the Rage Band to Frog, and he can counter using the Masamune, which drops Magus's Magic Defense. Giving either of them to Robo means the slow, tanky character can deliver heavy punches after taking hits to compensate for his slower turns. Also, he can still dish out damage even when healing. Even a character like Marle or Lucca can make use of it, since their weapons often come with status effects. But since they rely so much more on techs and magic rather than regular attacks, it's hard to utilize. But if they can _counter-attack,_ well, that solves that problem. Lastly, Chrono tends to have really good Crit Rates, so lots of Crit Counters is never a bad thing. And one more interesting quirk to counter-attacks; if an enemy has a "last breath attack" that automatically goes off when they die, for example Dalton's Golems mimicking Dalton's Buuurp, it *doesn't* activate if you kill them with a counter-attack. *5)* Your characters have a slight resistance to their inherent element. For example, Chrono takes slightly reduced damage from Lightning-based attacks, while Frog and Marle both take slightly reduced damage from Water/Ice-based attacks. And even though Ayla can't cast magic, she _still_ has inherent resistance to Fire; meaning if she *could* cast magic, Fire would be her element. *6)* While you _are_ able to power up the sealed Zeal chests, not *all* of them can be powered up. There's one in the Magic Cave (which leads to where Magus's Castle used to be) and one in Guardia Forest which do *not* power up their Present-Day counterparts; instead, they just immediately open with no prompt to wait. And this makes you miss out on the chance to double-dip by opening it in the Present first. So for these two specific chests, open them in the Present first, _then_ go back to the Middle Ages to open them. For all other sealed chests (except the one you pick from the blue pyramid), prime it first in the Middle Ages (but don't open), _then_ go to Present Day to open it, and *then* go _back_ to the Middle Ages to double-dip for the original. The locations of Sealed Chests _also_ roughly corresponds to locations of Sealed Doors in the Future era, implying the crests on the chests were utilized in making those doors. Speaking of double-dipping chests... *7)* In populated locations, like Guardia Castle, Present and Middle Ages *regular* (non-sealed) chests are independent; opening them in one era will *not* affect the contents in the other era. So you can feel free to grab the chests in Middle Ages Guardia Castle and not have to wait to loot the Present Day castle _first_ to double-dip; presumably, they're entirely different chests from one era to the other. *However,* in isolated and remote locations like forests, caves, and ruins, opening a chest in a past era *will* render it opened in a subsequent era. So to properly double-dip chests in, for example, the Northern Ruins, (the non-sealed ones, that is), you *do* want to first open them in the Present before going back to open them in the Middle Ages. I suppose this _technically_ applies to the second visit to Tyranno Lair when going after the Rainbow Shell, but there's no chance for double-dipping since you can't re-visit it after it gets blasted by Lavos. *8)* In Marle's defense, she's not exactly _useless;_ she's a *support* character. She not only has heals, a buff, a _debuff_ (provoke, remember?), and *both* life spells, but she _also_ has several very good Double and Triple techs. If you're trying to evaluate her by how good she is *solo,* that's like trying to gauge Ayla based on how well she deals Magic Damage and exploits elemental weaknesses... it's not her job and it's her weakest suit, but that doesn't make her "useless", it means you're not *using* her properly. Don't judge a fish based on their ability to climb a tree. *9)* The Swallow blade is... bad. If you *really* need speed, you'll still have the Slasher, which gives +2; Swallow is *only* +1 _over_ that. And other weapons offer other bonuses like better crit, +Magic (which Chrono _desperately_ needs), or bonus damage vs Magic creatures. By contrast, the Safe Helm is a solid and versatile defensive option for _any_ character to use right up until late-game. Marle, Lucca, or even Ayla or Frog can make _very_ good use of it. You'd only really want to take the Swallow if you're filling out an Item Checklist for the sake of +cheev.
@@Nebocsid nice, my first run was on snes. Crazy I never noticed lol. I knew you could double dip but not power up. I guess should have known from moon to sun stone as a clue.
@@flamehiro same here, SNES and double dipping. The SNES version gives you Marle's strongest weapon, Crono's second strongest weapon (with 4x critical damage) and the males strongest armor this way.
@@flamehiro I missed the banter between Frog in Magus' keep, like calling Slash 'Sir Slush' ("That's SLASH you slimy dolt") and Magus saying, "It's that stupid frog. Kissed any princesses lately?"
The fastest character will always start the battle with his action bar full, being able to immediately perform an action. If you have two characters with the same speed stat, BOTH will have the full bar, and same if you have all three of them. So if you have, as an example, all characters with speed of 12 and you find a speed tab, DON'T USE IT! Save until you have three, so you can give one each, boost all to 13 and keep all of them starting the battles with full action bars.
Also use Alya and Marle Twin charm on the Winged Apes in the Giant claw to stock up on MegaElixir. Also do the same to the Flyclops in the Black Omen to stock up on Gold Studs.
NO Those apes HIT like a TRUCK forcing me to use a Mega Elixer or + 600 Slurp kiss AFTER you steal it the stolen one IN the Black Omen those 2 head snake enemies NEVER attack you UNTIL theirs ONLY 1 left alive and you always fight 4 of them at once so ONLY steal Mega Elixers then NEVER off of the Wing Apes at all. As of Mt Woe MARLE sucks so I won't use Twin charm EVER.
*TIP:* The _first_ best place to gain a huge amount of Tech Points is in the "Hunting Range" in 65,000,000 BC. While in the Hunting Range expect to encounter a Nu when it rains. Each time you beat it you will win 3 Petals, Fangs, Horns, and Feathers, 248 Exp Points, and *30 Tech Points.* When it starts raining the Nu will either appear in the bottom right corner on the upper level, the top right corner on ground level, or in the top left corner on ground level. The best place to wait for it is on the top level in the bottom right corner. Don't wait too close to where it comes out or it won't come out at all. When it starts raining and the Nu doesn't appear there, then quickly run up to see if it's in the top right corner. If not, while still on the second level, keep heading all the way to the left, then down the vine, once on the ground keep heading to the left through the secret path under the trees to the top left corner. Fighting the Nu is easy. It has only 1,234 HP and don't freak out when it attacks you. It has only one attack that brings your HP down to one and that's it. *The Nu will never kill your party.* Just be careful not to run into any monsters on your way out. Now just lather, rinse, repeat...
Great beginner tips for a first-time player. 😎 ⚡️ Chrono Trigger is a game experience that can be enjoyed again and again, without it ever getting old... A classic RPG with great storyline and game mechanics. 👍🏻 🎮
I'm glad you said Marle sucks early on. The amount of videos I've seen of people playing CT for the first time and they feel compelled to bring her everywhere because they need a healer. They are doing themselves a great disservice. Not just because she's bad but because the game is made to swap out characters all the time.
it's time consuming at the start but grind enough money to buy the crimson blade/red katana from melchior at the fair at the start of the game.. 4500gp is steep at the time. but it'll be worth it because crono will be unstoppable till you start looking for the masamune
I do still use Marle although I know others are better, the first time I beat it I used Crono, Glenn and Marle, the story really makes you think that Marle is a really important character on the first blind playthrough because its basically a love story through time between Crono and Marle, then you get to the Massamune part of the story and the fact that Glenn is there to protect the Monarchs and thats what made me pick that trio first time around. however having said that there is a really good reason why Marle is not as good as the others, and it really is as simple as she really is not one of the eras heroes, Crono is and to a lesser extent his best friend Lucca, obviously Ayla and Robo are the chosen ones from their eras. I will be honest and say that I think that Magus is the worst one despite Marle being awful, he joins your team and you really do expect his spells to be powerful or at least have the ability to barrier change after a spell is cast against him but nothing...the story really makes you think that he is really powerful because he came from the era of magic but his spells are terrible.
Tales of the Abyss got it right with healers. Tear can multitarget but Natalia can only single target but heal a larger amount. Healing everyone's HP by 30 percent vs healing 1 person for 70 percent.
Cool video, but I feel like it's more min-maxing tips rather than tips for beginners. I've played this game multiple times, but I remember that my party was Frog and Marle the first time and I didn't feel she was weak or anything. Same for the speed tip. Never knew it capped at 15, but had no issues with finishing the game without that info.
Another tip: Many dual techs are actually shadow elemental. The game never calls this out, but when it's not abundantly clear which element is used in a tech, it's shadow.
That was actually one of the QoL changes made to the DS version. Each element has its own symbol as part of the description. :3
@@Terashiworst game 😂 say you’ve only played one game in your life with a single trash take
Didn’t have a clue. Good looking out. That makes sense now considering my non magic skills at times being absorbed.
thankssss
Another Tip: Sit back and enjoy the fantastic soundtrack to this game while you play. It is one of best video game soundtracks I have ever heard.
Never too late for a "Tips for Beginners" video for this timeless classic. Maybe one for FF6 next? haha
@@veghesther3204 based vegh answer right here.
-Aura whirl
-Ice water
-Antipode 1,2,3
-Ice Sword
-Ice Tackle
-Ice Toss & Cube Toss
-Double Cure
Objectively she's not as over-powered as the other characters, but I'd say she's still very good for normal playthroughs.
You just need to make sure to use her techs to get the most out of her, which I found to be very fun and satisfying as I replayed as an adult.
*Spoiler alert*
Not to mention that she's a great character.
Late game you can get haste helms though.
Double tech steal can come in clutch late game to steal rare items from bosses.
Just. Falcon Hit.
Falcon Hit is so over-powered it isn't even funny. Great for taking out Giga Gaia and the Golem Twins.
@@veghesther3204 OMG you living legend. Still using KotR instead of Omnislash??

This was actually really timely and helpful, about to start my first playthrough in like 20 years, thank you!

I already done it 1 month ago. So, it never too late to start to play Chrono Trigger. Gonna play again at new game+ for more items, tabs, dimensional vortex and endings because I only got 1 canonical ending with Crono alive and Epoch didn't destroyed.
My default party. Chrono, Robo, Ayla. Never second guessed it.
Our default party. I also prefer Magus, Frog and Ayla in the late game.
@@Dhalin You know Crono doesn't have an h in it right?
Mine was Crono, frog and Ayla. That game is so good... Fond memories
Loved your let's plays on your channel. Really helped me appreciate Ayla a lot more towards the end. Really useful, and insightful as always David!
the best hint possible for beginners on a simple game like that, is to play without knowing anything of it
yep. go in blind and figure it all out + enjoy. First run thru took me over 30 hours.
Thank you David, im actually close to finishing this, never got to beat as a kid but😢 here i am now! I appreciate the tips!
You got this!
I would add just a couple of tips to the list here:
1.) When crossing the ruins presided over by Johnny and the bots, go through on foot at least once, and GET THE RACING LOG.
Lol I love that you are doing a tips and tricks on such an older game - please do more of these 😊
Chrono Trigger ❤ Hope to see a remake/remaster soon 😊
The remake is already on PS1 with atrocious loading times...that's why they gave us Chrono Cross instead, but we'll see.
@@veilscarecrowthat's not a remake, just a port with cutscenes added.
Thank you for these tips I've played the game but wanted to get back into it this helps for sure
Glad I could help!
Ayla is a pistol of a character in the game she knows what she wants and is not afraid to speak her mind
I would like to bring some points in favor to Marle, for those who like to find use on the "weakests" members of the team and say that Marle's charm is in her combined techs:
- Marle and Ayla can steal rare and precious objects that would otherwise be very hard to use. Plus, if you have them both, you can pseudo-replace MT healing by casting cure (which normally heals almost all HP to a party member) and Ayla with her kiss.
- Marle and Luca are a good alternative for Shadow damage with their Antipode tech early on. Yes, Robo exist, but he's not really magic inclined at the beginning and if you're fighting only one enemy. is best to use a individual tech rather than an AoE
- Marle is the only way to get Haste before getting the almost late-game vests that apply that effect.
Protip: Gold Stud is a must. 75% MP cost reduction makes everything very easy.
Despite stealing 7 MORE I also stole MORE Mega Elixers then I knew what to do with them IE AT LEAST 40 to 50 of those.
Marle can at least dual cast antipode 3 with Lucca. That’s pretty powerful. I mean she still sucks, but at least she has that.
Also, do the Black Omen going backwards. Like do the present first, then go back in time. That way you can do it multiple times and steal plenty of speed tabs for everyone.
lol marle isn't sucks she's in my main team with ayla
her haste skill is op it makes your party do 2-3 moves before enemy attack again
and her combine tech with others is op too.
Just in time! I started this game for the first time not too long ago.
How old are ya?and in what console you play it?
@@logangr81 I got the mobile version on sale.
Marle and Lucca using Fire and Ice Sword 2 with a hasted Chrono relly shredded Giga Gaia.
I really like these tip videos for old RPGs. Thanks David, keep up the good work!
Glad you like them!
All really great advice!
Robo was always one of my endgame party members, with the party heal, AoE magic damage, and high physical damage techs.
They call me Gato.
I have metal joints.
Beat me up,
And earn 15 silver points.
As far as advice:
The only weapons that are stronger than the Swallow Sword can't be found until you are able to fly around freely.
The first two are just wrong lol
#1 sure CT isn't a game you have to really grind to beat but making sure to get some extra exp will make it much easier.
Marle has haste. That gives you twice as many moves for the whole fight. She’s not terrible.
Someone mentioned tab farming in general but you can specifically farm speed tabs in the Black Omen. Enjoy!
I love that you're extending this series to classics as well!
I actually didn't use Robo much on my first playthrough, next time I run through, I'll be sure to give him a good ol' stack of Magic Tabs xD
Speed as well, Robo is crazy slow.
@@earthboundfan5484 I'm pretty sure that's what made me end up not using him on my first run xD
u gave me a heart attack! i thought i was waking up years ahead where chrono trigger remaster/remake was out!
I didn't know a lot of these, so thanks! I might be due for a replay soon.
Congrats to those playing for the first time.
I remember struggling with the last boss because of Marle.
As soon as I switched her with Lucca, I kinda just breezed through and felt kinda empty.
Great tips for possibly the greatest game of all time!
And yeah: power up Robo's Magic stat, and he's just the best at everything!
Those were some great CT tips! Robo is an excellent party member, for sure!
Same for speed tabs robo is easily the best party member so you want him to be fast so use most of them on him
get charm with ayla the first time she joins your party and you can steal later game weapons and armor from the enemies there, and also farm them to sell to get the expensive stuff in medina , and i feel like a lot of people dont know this, you can re enter the shop multiple times and the prices will vary to a point its not that ridiculous to buy them and its a huge boost at that time if you get those items
Great tips! I just started a playthrough of the DS version and I'm going to put these tips to use.
Glad I could help!
I didn't find out about powering up the chests until years later. It also applies to the chests in the ruins where Cyrus is buried. You get Marle's strongest weapon, Crono's second strongest weapon, and the Moonbeam armor (men's strongest armor) that way. (This is the SNES version, folks)
Also, I wound up giving Fenixdown83 info valuable enough he gave me a shoutout on his Chrono Trigger Let's Play.
Thank you started Chrono Trigger on my PSP. Wasn't sure what to do
Love the way speed works in CT!
Don't forgot about getting the Rainbow Shell, it gives you one of the best accessories in the game or Chrono's best sword in the game, as well as the best armor for everyone. Prism Helms for the WIN!
Another tip: steal stuff with Ayla. Lots of good stuff can be stolen with her charm technic
I like how in crono trigger you can use anyone in the party and be fine (mostly)
Good video. I tend to use each one till I learn all the techs and dual techs. Usually end up with the team of Crono/Frog/Robo or Crono/Frog/Magus.
I had no idea you can power up the black chests.
These are some great tips!! I'm saving this one
Glad it was helpful!
A few more tips, and also a few counter-points to the video:
*1)* Between leveling up and tabs, most characters can max out, or at least _mostly_ max, their "core" stats.
But if you exploit that high multiplier by force-feeding him MTabs, his Luminaire can become absolutely _stupid strong!_
*4)* The Rage Band, and later the Frenzy Band, allow a character to Counter-Attack.
I've had it on PS1 collection for a million years... maybe I should play it soon.
Marle does have one redeeming quality an it's Antipode 3. I love that spell it's also OP
Largely spoiler free with visual cues as well. Nicely done.
how do you "power up'' the chests? does it happen when you just appear to them? I forget.
I'm playing it for the very first time now :)
Marle and Ayla are the best combo for stealing and some powerful Items can only be stolen by their dual tech
Powered up chests never knew about 😂 . For enemies and bosses they can counter against specific actions and there is no delay, be careful is my tip.
Took me years to find out the chest tip. Use this during Frog's side quest in the Fated Hour. You'll get top level equipment.
@@Nebocsid nice, I like snes version still best too. Wasn't a fan of new translations or content.
@@flamehiro I missed the banter between Frog in Magus' keep, like calling Slash 'Sir Slush' ("That's SLASH you slimy dolt") and Magus saying, "It's that stupid frog. Kissed any princesses lately?"
Thanks for a vid about the GOAT, David
bro ask about belthasaur
switch the construct off..yes or no what i choose please answer best answer sir thanks
Great game. Reaching in the bag of the past david. Good to see
Also side quests in this game are both fun and have great rewards
“Wow. I love this game.”
1:16 “And here is some character bashing for you.”
This was pretty cool!
I can’t figure out how to switch party members when your on the world map. I know how to do it on the id end of time island in the sky
I know this would likely go without saying, but my tips would be: Talk to everyone, do every party member's side quests, have fun at the faire.
Great tips, I'll need them for the eventual remake that's coming 😉
Marle + Luca Antipodes dual tech attack is good though. Otherwise as you said, Frog for his team healing spell.
Actually that's the Lone/Silver sword that's buyable at the start the Red Katana is only buyable right BEFORE you fight Heckran itself.
Great tips for an awesome game!
Are ice and water the same it seems like ice does more damage
Most important tip: enjoy this absolute masterpiece of a game
I KNEW that Marle tip was gonna be in here. 😂
…and yeah, she does suck.
I never used to ever think of Bulma when I saw Lucca.. But thanks to watching Chrono Trigger retro's its all I see now. :(
Thinkin of doing one of these for SaGa 2/Final Fantasy Legend 2.
First rabtoons releases a Crono Trigger IAN sneak peak and now this? Is it Crono Trigger day and no one told me?
Cool video, but I feel like it's more min-maxing tips rather than tips for beginners.
I've played this game multiple times, but I remember that my party was Frog and Marle the first time and I didn't feel she was weak or anything.
Same for the speed tip. Never knew it capped at 15, but had no issues with finishing the game without that info.
Hey you have all your party members at level ⭐⭐ ?
I never played this game 😢 but I took it not so long again ❤ Love from Belgium 🇧🇪 ❤
Man I hope we get this game on switch, so that newcomers to this game to experience an eternal classic. I love the DS version.
