Frankly, how Batman was handled is one if the least of my concerns with the DCEU. What bothers me about it is that no matter what they tried to do, it didn't work (for various reasons, one being that Snyder is unable to use symbolism effectively because he makes movies consisting of moments more than arcs another being the self-important tone of the whole thing), and that the character they depicted on screen is an unsympathetic douchebag pushing a very toxic message, never mind HOW he is called.

These aren't direct adaptations. They are new versions of the characters. Do whatever you want as long as you make it good. And Snyder has a tendency to over do somethings in his films, especially violence.
But I truly believe that Snyder was trying to do some thing different with his films. He presented us with deeply flawed heroes in a deeply flawed world, and showed us their journeys to bieng the heroes they need to be.
And despite the flaws and Snyder's tendencies, that message does come out. And people are starting to see it more clearly after ZSJL.
Now that people have seen Snyder's full plan, they are going back and appreciating Snyder's take.

Great analysis as always. The DCEU and especially Snyder's films are clunky, bold and messy. But there is a certain beauty to many of them that goes unrespresented in the discussions of film analysis culture and it's a shame, which is why I'm glad people are revisiting the work to present more honest and thorough perspectives on it.
One little nitpick tho: It's actually implied twice in TDKR that Batman kills. One with a mutant gangmember and the other with Joker. Snyder while not being the most articulate or straightforward of people, is not an idiot. Terrio and Snyder were both on the same wavelength with what they wanted. If not, Snyder would have had someone write the screenplay like Goyer again or something.
Either way, these interpretations of the characters are interesting and I hope WB and DC continue to let these characters explore, contradict and grow. It's fresh in the world of superhero cinema.

Snyder was actually technically right when he referenced "The Dark knight Returns".
In that story Frank Miller wanted to showcase Batman's hypocrisy, the fact that he is a killer in denial.
In that comic Batman does indeed kill but in very subtle ways because it's from his POV.
For example, when he fought the Joker he didn't just paralyzed him by twisting his neck.. he completely snapped it and killed him. Their conversations after that was all in Batman's head, it's hinted with the color of the speech bubbles. People saw that and called him a killer but Batman was again in denial and replied with "I wish I was" with a very guilty looking face.
He was just making up excuses like in the movie.
And that's basically the inspiration for Batman's arc in BvS.

The problem I have with him killing is that it doesn't exactly make sense. If Batman is gonna kill then Joker must not be alive. If Batman is willing to go down this road, then this needs to front and center, something that Alfred talks about from time and time again, trying to pull him into the light instead of complete darkness. I like themes what this movie was trying to accomplish, but the very issues lies in the fact that this is Batman first appearance in the Snyder universe, this is Superman second appearance in the Snyder universe. If we're gonna have these titans clash, these two individual learn and grown to the end of the movie, then we need some extra semblance of time with these characters.
One movie can not dissect why Batman kills since part of the movie is dedicated to Superman and his arc of being an alien in a world who's paranoid by his powers.
One movie can not dissect Superman's arc of being hopeful no matter when things seems hopeless. Because you also have Batman as the front and center while also having wonder woman, Lex, and doomsday.
The very issue is that bvs does too much in one movie, and it's accomplishments to these arcs while fulfilled, feels hollowed in my eyes because we didn't get the time we needed for these characters. To truly understand there world, there mindset of what their purpose is as of that moment, and why they need to better for a better world. Because I really love Snyder version of the justice league, I felt everyone who worked on this version put more love and effort compare to the two previous movies before it. It to me felt like a comic book coming to life in front of my face that I only get occasionally with other super hero movies. I specifically wish we had more development for Batman and Superman so when they do clash, when Batman chooses to be better after Superman's death, it means alot and its powerful then hollow. But I can only dream.

Yes absolutely. That's one of the annoying things about this Batman as they don't follow through all the logical consequences that they're change implies.
If we have a Batman who kills, then Arkham is only going to have villains who don't kill people. The rest will be in the grave.
And since you would have to include all of their hint people, this would be a Batman who has literally killed hundreds of people. Which almost certainly means he's killed one or two innocent people.
This wasn't the Batman I grew up with in red for over 20 years. It just shows bad or biased writing can ruin any character. And the only way to deal with it is to walk away. Which I did after BvS.

Your point about Snyder misrepresenting The Dark Knight Returns is actually false: Batman kills quite alot in the Comic. Yes, he demonizes guns in two scenes, but he also USES guns in multiple other scenes. He shoots the Mutant threatening a baby, uses hagrapling gun that looks suspiciosly like a rifle (that's on purpose), and shoots a gun after killing the Joker (yes, he killed Joker. Look up the theory about Jokers grey speech-bubbles. Only Batman's thought-bubbles are grey, he is imagining Joker to still be alive because he is in denial). He also uses his tank to shoot up and blow the shit out of the mutants... Do people really think no one died there? It's all about Batman being in complete denial about what he is actually doing. He is an old, hypocritical man in the comic. It also holds a mirror in the face of the readers, with many of them being perfectly fine to ignore the violence and believe the lie that Batman didn't kill anyone. It's quite brilliant actually.

For the DKR, it is referencing the comic where it shows Batman shooting the mutant which looks like he died from the bullet, where as Batfleck shooting the tank Zack said that it would have gone too far for Batman to just kill him after everything that’s happened.

Great video and lots of great points. I personally think part of the reason Batman's arc fell a bit short was because there was a fundamental misunderstand of him on WB part because as the Dark Knights Joker puts it best "you are truly uncurable force" therefore having this batman who kills and uses guns shows WB huge misunderstand of how Batman works and how he truly is.

This was great. Except that Batman does kill in the Dark Knight Returns. He kills the Joker and in the comic inspiration for the scene where he saves Martha he kills the guy by shooting him. Synder actually toned that down by just having him light the gas on fire.
