Been there and done that, I've learned to manually push the contactor when I find an old system with traces of refrigerant leak to get an idea of the charge, that ussually gives up a bad compressor or capacitor too.
I second that. Had a heat pump condenser do the exact same thing to me last year made the mistake of changing out the compressor just to discover it was still tripping the breaker turned out to be the cable not the compressor causing a short inside the plug under load. 3 1/2 hours work on a change out for a 2-minute plug replacement.
That did seem to trip way too quick to be lock rotor...normally the compressor would attempt to start. But running the fan without the compressor proved there was no dead short upstream of the contactor so that means it's failing under load leading to either the compressor or the breaker/panel. I've seen it where the bus bar was burned up and the there was arcing under a decent load causing a dead short.
Somehow, someway, that compressor is stuck. I guess from sitting. Dang shame after all the work you put into it beforehand. Good video, you can't win them all, I hope you get the replacement job.
He never took an Amp reading to see if it was over amping? As quickas that breaker was tripping it had dead short someplace it seems. I don't think it was LR
@@MrJujubean That is possible, that wiring was cracked up. I think that the unit sat so long the compressor was stuck. Now this rarely works and kind of barbaric, but I have taken a block of wood and a hammer and give the compressor a good wack, and sometimes it would start. Then I would install a hard start capacitor on it. That unit was old and it wasn't worth all the risk. If you got it going and then discover a leak, then you are really screwed. He made the right choice.
That unit looks like it had a hard life and it was totally neglected from the video. I guess the compressor was toast and the unit will have to be replaced. Great video.
This video/ comments helped me on my journey, I now know what inrush current is, LRA, and now I have to figure out why you were ohming out the compressor to that pipe, which I assume is grounded.
Check capacitor by checking amps and volts if cap is good you will read both if volts and no amps cap is open if amps but no volts cap is shorted this will trip breaker it happens to dual capacitors more often and that is probably why the 5microfarad side of the dual cap was not being used a capacitor can read good if the only thing checked is the microfarad reading but still be shorted internally.
Based on the readings he got, it would not have revealed any problems, unless he used an insulation resistance tester, and most techs don't even have one of those.
I very much enjoyed watching this late this afternoon. I would love to whack that compressor with a big rubber hammer or something! That looks just like the Rheem that was in a rental property. That one looked lazy, like trying to wake up a teenager 😂 Thanks a lot for the video. It made a great Sunday afternoon! 👍☺️
If the compressor has been sitting up for a long period of time it could be frozen which would cause it to trip the breaker. You may have to replace it. I would try a rubber mallet first and try get it to come lose, if not, then replace it. 😀
Why did you turn the tstat without cking the condenser first. Why did you replace the Contactor before cking presssure. You saw the oil. 18:48 there is a guage port on the dryer. You could use it and save a lot of trouble. A few simple cks can save a lot of time. If tripping the breaker go straight to the compressor terminals and check.
True, but the readings he got when he did check it would not have shown there to be a problem, so it would not have helped. An insulation resistance tester would likely have revealed the problem, but that only gets pulled out when there is a problem, and most techs don't even have one.
Nice haircut. Anyone catch the cracks in the mains during the contactor change out. There was no grommet in the hole so it's eventually going to fail and may have in the past Fun video to watch too. Not criticizing, just watching. 😊
That is the worst line set installation I have ever seen in my life. I can't stand HVAC companies who don't care about their installs. 4:19 I thought you shut off power here... What was that brief electrical hum?
The power wire coming off the contactor looks like it is grounding to the case, has breaks in the insulation on both wires. You didn't see that ????? Your work is getting sloppy. I would have cut the ends off the wires and had good ends to go into the contactor lugs. Just my professional opinion to a non-professional.
I would looked at it and condemned it and just got a new unit. Throwing good money on bad to repair it I went through that! They kept replacing parts in within 3 months, it would have been cheaper to replace the unit.
What about checking the inrush amps? It could have been a weak breaker that was tripping way too low.
Love that Valve core removal tool with sight glass… no more guessing!
I would try a hard start to see if that would brake loose compressor
I remember using a Little Annie to do the same thing.
Hard start kits only work to avoid the inevitable for a while. It needs junked out and the whole unit replaced
You right and that is the conversation I have with the owner as well.
Hello Curtis. I really enjoy listening to the birds. When you say Lovely, I know it's going to be bad news!
Been there and done that, I've learned to manually push the contactor when I find an old system with traces of refrigerant leak to get an idea of the charge, that ussually gives up a bad compressor or capacitor too.
Totally agree. Woulda been nice to see the inrush too
Wire coming into the contactor box had insulation cut up.
Weak breaker ? May need hard start kit ?
Curtis great job troubleshooting very informative hope you get the repair or changeout thanks for the video
Thanks 👍
Very good work,Curtis! I learn alot from your videos.
May have been the compressor connector that had a short in it. Might have been useful to check the connector for a short.
he did as he disconnected the compressor and the fan ran. However he should have retested to make 100% sure it was the compressor.
@@richardbartlett6932 I think he disconnected the cable from the contactor when he ran the test, thus excluding the cable. Maybe I am mistaken.

I would have replaced the 35 and tried a hard start. Seen some go for years after a pace maker.
Nice view behind you on your opening statement.
Thanks!
Curtis you need try with use Megaohmeter Fluke 1587
No more often than we actually have a use for a megaohmeter, The Klein ET600 plenty, and 1/5 the cost of the Fluke.

Did you check the circuit breaker?
Yes, I did. Nothing obvious
@@HVACGUY What about checking the inrush amps. It could have been a weak breaker that was tripping way too low.
@@RobertTuck-vo8cw I've seen breakers tripping leading to believe it was a bad compressor!

crankcase heater ?
11:27 - What in the ABC's Wide World of Sports is that hackery?! ⚡
Lol😂
What’s your go to leak detector rn ?
So could it have been LRA? Aways enjoy watching your videos
It won't fit in your Veto bag, but would a 3-wood be the correct tool for a rooster, or would you be close enough to use a pitching wedge?
That unit looks like it had a hard life and it was totally neglected from the video. I guess the compressor was toast and the unit will have to be replaced. Great video.
I have had many compressors trip the breaker when power is energized and not be able to get an ohm reading on the compressor
Any remodeling updates on your house, i.e., porch, underground pool, etc?
Compressor wiring of loose connection on the breaker ? Since the compressor was reading good!!

Checking for internal short?
Did you notice the insulation was all cracked up on the line voltage wires?
Good unit to use for training newbies. So many issues
I hope that when this person is finished he has cleaned the air conditioning when a job is done it is done complete and clean
Maybe the breaker was shot blowing premature ..
Anyone know what that is growing?
LRA inrush was blowing that breaker I’d say age killed it
Cant wait to see a changeout vidioe 😊😊
Well Curtis, i hope you score the newchange over job 👍 Au

How old was that unit
never seen sight glass on core remover tool awesome & I will buy one Thanks
Curtis, you need to keep a fishing pole in that van man!!
Need a couple of those magnetic parts trays?? Contractor wires broken insulation and corroded ?
3:34 Rhode Island reds are usually pretty nice
My question is....why install parts without checking the compressor first after you found the bad contactor? I never do that.
Based on the readings he got, it would not have revealed any problems, unless he used an insulation resistance tester, and most techs don't even have one of those.
Too Bad you could Not get this Old Unit Working but it was not for a lack of trying. 👍🙏

Lack of oil in the compressor, locked rotor maybe?

I noticed it’s a lot of older units down south compared to where I’m at in so cali
If it ain't broke, we don't tend to replace.

Sensible way to use back yard. My dad use to say "you can't eat that grass you put so much time into maintaining"
Smart way to use the yard; plant some peppers or other vegetables and save $$$.
Sucks for me that the city won't let me raise a cow in my back yard, as I don't eat plants anymore!🤣
What brand schrader tool are you using and where did you get it
Fieldpiece, trutech tools
check his other videos he did a review on it a week or 2 ago.
Always like the video 😊
Maybe no good contact at the compresor connector from . I did not see you to measure at the connector on the compressor.
Not all roosters attack lol. Some are very tame.
All the ones I know do. LOL

12 Volt contactor?
I didn’t t see you check the condenser fan
He unplugged the compressor and turned the breaker on to see if the condenser fan motor ran.
It did.
LOL!! WHAT KIND OF CROPS ARE THEY GROWING??
Looks like green acres?
Me personally I would have tackled that thing with my battery powered Shop-Vac and a leaf blower before I did any kind of work on it.
Those are some Handy Dandy wire strippers....whats the name
Meg the compressor, will signal bad, plus significant oil leak and age over 12 yrs old, time for a new AC system.
Nice little crop. I wonder what they're growing. Almost looks like peanuts.
Beans I assume in the yard
I don't care that they don't pay me to clean it, but I do it so that the person no longer has a problem.
bad breaker?
Sounds like that unit is a change out.
👍👍👍
New unit oil no good

Come on some people just don't think putting your garden up close to your AC Unit. Not bright at all they need to breath
after work you got a free chicken dinner :)
Chicken... haha
What a mess!
If there is no chirp inside, smoke detectors. Then there’s a lot of chirping outside.
You ain't lying 😂
Need new breaker
Yep, need to eliminate possibility though chances are low
Bad compressor change it out ..
You Couldnt fix - because its unfixeable my dear friend and tradesmen
If you don’t want to be injured by the rooster, have the customer secure it before you work on the AC
You obviously haven’t tried to catch a rooster
For all that don't know, getting spurred is similar to getting stabbed by s marlin spike!!
Geese ar even worst and they always attack you from your back! LOL
Thermal overload on the compressor
wasnt tripped. he was able to ohm out all three terminals on the compressor
Is that marijuana?
No

Those are not supposed to stay on the system for more than 48h.
Man that ac is gone man, she goneee maaan. 😅
They guy who installed the previous replacement compressor was looking forward to replace the unit altogether!
