Such a sophisticated sound. I loved it the day it came out. GIANT records was on to something. This along with Uniform Choice's Staring into the Sun and Verbal Assault's Trial showed a maturity in hardcore that really appealed to me even as a teen. I consider this entire era "crossover" as it wasn't just hardcore bands dabbling in metal, but also melody. I cut my teeth in this era. You could show up at a half-pipe and hear everything from GBH to Fugazi to Naked Raygun to The Cure. There was this immense momentum and then it all just stopped. Bands either "returned to their roots" or just quit while they were ahead. I went under for a while, then resurfaced only to find stores like Hot Topic selling Misfits air freshness for cars. Times change. I understand and don’t judge. Thankfully I still have my memories and this LP will always stand out as a defining sound of my youth.
+TheInnerStation I hear you and fully agree. It's strange that ramp skating "died" at the time that hardcore changed, but maybe it was the zeitgeist, when small scenes could be recognized by the wider world more easily than before.
naked who?skydivers
Government Issue and 7 Seconds also broke their mold around this time. The F.U.'s turned into Straw Dogs but who didn't see that coming? A lot of bands switched it up in just a few years. Negative Approach turned into the Laughing Hyenas with psychotic hard rockabilly metal. I could never make the transition from Can I Say to this album. The high-endish guitar and vocal style changed so much and I really missed Dave Smalley. It's good everyone tried doing different things. This ain't a bad album though as long as I don't think of Can I Say.
Actually there was another album before with Peter Cortner singing: Wig out at Denko's.
U2 were highly Creative at that time.
I, too, was once a young rebel, and now I'm the old person at the shows. Just like Dag Nasty said. This is near the top of my Desert Island remix list, and near and dear to my heart.
ETA: I saw the band known as Field Day live tonight... We were all so old there wasn't even a pit, thank goodness.
Theres a band known as field day?
@@calebkendrick5286 indeed! facebook.com/fielddaysounds/
@@calebkendrick5286 Yea it has Peter Cortner and Doug Carrion from the Wig Out/Field Day lineups. They do a lot of songs from the first three Dag Nasty albums and just put out a new EP of original material yesterday!
not necessarily pit music.
One Of The Best Records Ever Made. Brian Baker Is A Genious!
For sure my fav dag nasty, which is dificult to say because the first one w/Sean Brown and Can I Say are hardcore classics, but Wig Out and Field Day are just.......mesmerizing. its definitely nostalgia overdose when i hear Field Day. Me in the 8th grade, 1 of 3 skaters in the whole jr. high school in a mid size city in w. TN. Akward and did not like participating or being around people. Would sit there in all of my classes drawing and listening to this album in my head thinking of what tricks i was gonna work on that weekend, which in 89-90 wouldve been, well actually in 19 90 the whole skate scene - tricks and boards were about to change drastically overnight. Now here i am 44 single in my shop at home by myself building a soundproof room within my shop so my neighbors wont hear my drums as much.- in a mid size city in w. TN. listening to Dag Nasty Field Day.
I have so much nostalgia for this album and this time of my life. Like others said, my days were spent on my skateboard, listening to this, Fugazi, Government Issue, Misfits, Jawbreaker, Jawbox, Soul Side, Shudder to Think, Bad Brains, Embrace, Operation Ivy, Youth Brigade, Scream, Ignition, Descendents, Black Flag, Swiz, Verbal Assault, Rites of Spring... This music got me through some hard times and empowered me to think for myself.
hells yeah, i grew up in MD. and saw Fugazi.,, G.I., Jawbox, Soulside, Ignition, Bad Brains, Descendents, Swiz, so many great Dischord bands though I missed the whole Rev. Summer era stuff live... Totally great area and time for these tunes
Now I hate myself because i can’t skate 👍
@@samdorsh neither can I, used to bmx though
wow. I used to love Shudder To Think.
@@StormWatcher313 Shudder To Think are great.
I remember getting this, the day it was released-
"Wig Out..." Was my summer of 87album,and saw the show at the Graystone in Detroit...
An amazing show!
wish i seen em. saw shudder to think and fugazi countless times but missed the boat on dag nasty. Doesn't feel right unless all caps DAG NASTY
Got to see Field Day last weekend. So amazing to hear these songs live.
One of the best things I've ever heard.
Brings tears to my eyes it's been so long since I've heard this.
Great album. I remember when I first heard this album back in 89 or 90. Fantastic !
this is new to me, been spending the afternoon with Dad nasty and I like it......
"All Ages Song one of the best songs heard "!!!
Coming up on 30 years and it still one of my favourite songs ever.
Things That Make No Sense ... such an amazing melodic masterpiece

The whole album is such genius
i love that song so much
Trouble Is is a fucking amazing sing. Criminally underrated band.
Thanks. Been wanting to hear this album for years
I love this just as much as I did when it first came out. Has a good vibe.
Absolutely brilliant. Not as good as Can I Wig Out albums but still great. Just got a £13.90 tape copy from Canada in the post for Crass-mas. Delighted. Craig in Alford Scotland
Definitely a hard album to find. Big Dag Nasty fan and never owned it. Had a copy on cassette.
A lot of New Wave influence in this album. Love it.
Saw Dag Nasty several times at City Garden in Trenton, NJ (1987-89) Some of the live pictures in the "Field Day" lettering were taken there.
For some reason I'm thinking the Field Day stop at C/G was a matinee ? Not sure why that sticks in my mind ...
The lyrics and guitar are superior.
First time listening to this. Its great.
Epa! gran descubrimiento. Llegue aca escuchando BigDrillCar.....gran sonido y mas por la epoca. Saludos de bs as
"If you doubt it, let me remind you - I'm in love with you" What is this, Journey? Holy shit.
Fantastic start to finish.
All ages show !!!
Played ramp side summer of 89. How old is old? Still skating, still going to shows.
Ejr1636 , funny shit I played can I say by the ramp. Goddamn this album sounds newer than 1988!
I don't know anything about the band but I used to have this album on cassette tape and have missed it for many years. It's amazing I still remember the album so clearly. Listening to it is a weird trip down memory lane.
A classic love you guys and thank you
This album is amazing
coolest t shirt ever. i was 13 and saw the 16 year old wearing a DAG NASTY t shirt. Never really talked with them, but i got this record. thanks for sharing this! Haven't heard this in forever **DC was so good about all ages shows -- 13 at original 9:30 club? nuts! I got culture, then WUST hall and the Unitarian church shows when crash worship opened for fugazi!? wtf seen some things -- all bc ALL AGES SHOW! much love
Reading the comments about this album made my day. Thank you.
love this tape.
everyone wants to be a critic,it is what it is.
Great band!
This album is so haunting. I bought it in '95 and I didn't really pay it too much mind because of the style change but it always sort of followed me like a shadow. It still haunts me but the end product is you know what they say worth more than the sum of whatever.
yea! me too. I've never recommended this to anyone because it's shit.
but I always loved it. ...some of it. ...not much of it.
...most of it is embarrassing.
You're both totally on with that...These guys were shutting down the DCHC thing, meaning their own band as it had been known too, that's a wild thing to hear made into an album. And a lot of the songs are dreck, especially on the A-side. But there is this smattering of extremely high-quality songs, some quiet, some pop, some still a little aggro, and you realize they're animated by the power of someone walking away from his scene's orthodoxy to prove its founding principle.
One favorites!!!!!!
do not touch that record…..just listen…nothing needs to be changed
The Ruts cover really shows what their influences are.
Great album... but the vocals sound funny at some points. I love Peter on "Wig Out..." but on this one he's just weak on some songs. "Trouble Is" is a great example. The music is stellar, but the vocals are practically whispered yet mixed too loud. They sound completely disconnected from the music.
+mikehermetic i get it man, sounds very weird, but when you relisten it a few times maybe you will get used to it more. That usually happens when i have this experience and i have this thought.
Don't get me wrong, I still love the album. "Dear Mrs. Touma" is one of my favorite Dag tunes!
I agree with Josiah. Pretty well put together album as far as song arrangement flow.
88 was a tough year for me too.
I would think this album and Dag Nasty's turn post-Smalley in general marked the last days of DC hardcore as clear as any other document. It's a soft record, not always in good ways, and a fair amount of dreck heaped on the A side -- no idea why. BUT, there are six songs, six singles, on this record that could have sold gold -- if they were on Brothers in Arms let's say. Baker was uncorked musically, on fire, and audibly living that moment when someone revolts against the orthodoxies of the musical scene that had nurtured them. The best part is that he defied them in style as well as substance, lecturing only once (Simple Minds) and instead making biting musical jokes about the DC thing at that time including ironic and slightly cock-eyed makeovers from his own musical track record - Minor Threat's cover of Wire's 12XU and a less-than-sober version of Under Your Influence.
I mean yeah I know he put on leather pants and moved to LA, and there is some deeply, deeply corny shit on this record, and they put all sorts of the weak phaserverb-laden bullshit up front on the record...But those six unassailable songs are in there, and buddy, guys like you and I will never know what it’s like to have done that.
Haven't heard this in years and now I know why. lol
+fight2uniteorlose Mrs. Touma's in the Dag top ten though I agree with the whole
Sweet!
despite the distance give me trust and I will bring it home to you
All ages show!
The Descendants became All, and Dag Nasty became... Dag Nasty.
+Ferrox Glideh Dave Smalley sounded more energetic and agressive on Dag Nasty's "Can i Say" record, and in ALL's "Allroy Sez...." he sounded different... kinda like on "Four on the Floor"
Also, Descendents is more like pure Punk Rock and ALL is more like Melodic Hardcore. Two not so different bands.
+Bastián Acosta gee, when I got that All album with Smalley singing I was excited until I heard it. I was expecting Dag Nasty Dave. He's very versatile but that All album didn't do much for me. Down By Law didn't hit it for me either.
agree about Allroy Sez. Was hoping for more.
this is good business
Man this record kicks ass! I can see how it gets overlooked in favor of the first 2 though. Really, it needs remastering badly, especially in the vocals, perhaps even re-recording parts. Also, I could do without the Van Halen guitar solos although not unbearable by any means. Such an ambitious record and despite having more criticism about it, it is also my favorite!
Neo Jeo Giant Records vs Dischord. Ian's crew knew their shit.
Nostalgia credo che sia l' unico LP che mi faceva andare d'accordo con la fidanzata dark, ma niente a che fare con il primo
thx
Who remembers buying End of the Century by the Ramones and desperately wanting to like it ...but couldn't latch onto anything at all because it was so nauseatingly soft, with a muffled guitar sound and a sheer desperate craving to be accepted by the mainstream. This LP invokes the same feelings. If Dag Nasty watered themselves down any further at this point it could've be played in corporate elevators.
wooooo
I miss these days and all the good memories. If anyone knows how I can get my hands on this Disc again for a reasonable price, please let me know?
If you are still searching there are some discs on amazone but theyre like 40 $ so dunno if that is it worth for you.
Okay,I'll check Amazon. Thans k PIDL PADL 40 is about as high as I want to spend

Discazo!
Hard Core in version -,,The Clash,,
Peter is awesome a little fuzzy on some songs wig out was a lot better
sounds like a microphone recording next to a speaker.
Ooh. This brings me back. ... Calgary band?
Nope. From Washington, D.C.
Muito foda !
fck i had a vinyl copy of this album in 1988
Love this but don’t sound like Dag Nasty that I know. Know the first 2 albums but not this album.
When I was 17 I loved this tape, loved wig out and can I say too...In hindsight tho I think they should have changed the band name or something for field day. Not only is the sound drastically different, the theme of the songs is too different. It's just not the same band as on wig out, definitely not on can I say...
I think Shawn Brown wrote most of the Can I Say lyrics before Smalley joined so the tone of the songs here are different and Brian's guitar playing is now 5-6 years further away from Minor Threat and I can understand how he doesn't just want to play fast and aggressive.
Very Die Kreuzen esque guitar sound
Ha seems like ur a little bit of a fan of Dag Nasty.
I just can't upvote when it's sitting at 666 likes.
!
I love this album so much, but goddamn, the mix is not good. The distorted guitar is buried in the mix in most of the songs and the drum sound is pretty poor. If this whole album was mixed like the Trouble Is 12", that would have been spectacular. The band mixed this album but I have no idea what was going through their heads to make them think this sounded good. I really hope the master tracks are still available and that a proper mix can be done at some point.
Billy idol + skate = this album guitar effect police
Elliot Smith and Sunny Day Real Estate?
Weird, I dont really know who I am too much because thats not entertaining. - XXX
+A Collectiv Unfair? Fake suicidal Hardline joke love song album too.
Horrible album, major disappointment after can i say and wig out!! Recorded bad and they lost their edge
This version of "Under Your Influence" is terrible.
It's not as good as the original but I like it
It's ok to like shitty things.
Having the Can I Say version makes it hard to listen to a newer version. Dischord put out a lot of Can I Say songs with Dag's original singer. What's with the Led Zep / Sabbath stuff at the end of the song? It's like they are mocking the song. Yikes!
I like this version. It feels like an homage and parody at the same time.
@@chrisfrancz2014 I always assumed they were mocking Smalley's lyrical stylings.
thx
