I seriously don’t understand how this album isn’t better praised. It didn’t sound, “punk” and I’m sure that’s it. But musically and lyrically this album is solid. It’s something that I can listen to back to back without fatigue.
I totally agree! I bought it in 88 and was hoping for more Minor Threat sound and it caught me super off guard. This was independent "Indy" rock before that was a thing, yet it was. This album is a top favorite if not my favorite record of all time. The memories of my youth yet I still love the songs and the dramatic different feeling to each song.
I welcomed all the changes in 7 Seconds, Dag Nasty and even Uniform Choice. I also caught the mid 80's Dischord stuff but sadly only heard excellent period Government Issue albums (i.e. "You") during the pandemic.
This is one of the most criminally overlooked albums, ever. Emo before Emo existed, and 'You're Mine' is proto-Grunge. It seems to have been poorly regarded by a lot of fans (it's about as far away from Can I Say as you can get) but it was ridiculously far ahead of its time.
Of all the weird things, this sold what 30,000 copies, yet i knew 6 people in my rinky dink town of Waynesboro Pa that all owned a cassette copy, i guess we were heavily over sampled in that count, lol for what's it worth I hope it brings someone joy to know that! Also we used to ride around in a mint red 62 T Bird with this blasting! It changed our small worlds lives, we went from mostly only hardcore and punk to broadening our tastes as to what we thought was "cool". This record was essential to what became grunge or alternative, for bad or good, life is messy like that.
In my tiny town of La Mirada, CA we also had about 10-12 people blasting this on cassette. Either driving to & from the beach, or while we skated a backyard ramp.
I think it was maybe only 2 of us in Boyle Heights, CA who owned this LP) or even knew this album when it came out!! I still have my copy. I also still own my "All Ages Show" cassette. Interestingly, I just recently moved to La Mirada.
There were a bunch of people over in the UK in South Lincolnshire wandering amongst the potato and tulip fields back in the late 80's who dug Dag Nasty (and dug up the potatoes and the tulip bulbs).
Can I say and wig out at Denko’s are outstanding Dischord gems, this is my first ever listen to Field Day, great. Will play Dag with Shawn LP next. Old school emo before it became an ultimate insult. Fantastic.
This is not their best album, BUT it has some of their best songs...You can hear a band in transition, and the lyrics to the song "Field Day" tell you everything
Thank you thank you thank you. Probably been 25 years since I listened to this entire album. I agree on the need to remix it if possible, but def some memorable melodies and lyrics here. Great memories too
A remix would be really great for this album! I usually say "leave it alone," but I think putting better sonic qualities would really make the songwriting shine.
I just listened to this album for the first time since ‘88 and I remembered every word. It is like being reunited with an old best friend. I LOVED them then and I still do and this album is still amazing! Thank you so much for sharing this ❤
I seriously want to know what happened to the production on this record. Some of their best stuff, but it sounds so weird. I know there are different versions of 'Trouble Is" and "All Ages Show" out there that sound way better. The "All Ages Show" one I think is on the 20 years of Dischord comp.
I love the songs on this album, but the production is absolutely terrible. This album could seriously use a remix if the master tracks are still available.
@@robertlane1197 There is an alternate version of "Trouble Is" that was released as a 12 inch that has a different mix than the album. It sounds soooooo much better and I really wish they would have mixed the whole album that way. The band mixed this album themselves but I don't know what they were thinking. The guitars are not at the right volume whatsoever. There are several guitar parts that are buried in the mix and they can barely be heard. Truly a shame because the guitar tone on this album sounds sick, but in most parts the bass drowns it out. There are so many gems on this album that are difficult to listen to because the sound is so sterile. It's akin to Metallica's "...And Justice for All" album (released the same year) but with not enough guitar instead of not enough bass.
I just brought this topic up on the Uniform Choice Staring into the Sun video. You are so correct, the mix sucks and if there's a way to re-master and make it punchier that would be amazing. "There are several guitar parts that are buried in the mix and they can barely be heard." < THIS!!!!
@@blonkeddleharvey2308 It’s so much better as you said. Also the Inner Ear version of All Ages Show hints at how epic this would’ve sounded under the supervision of Don Zientara. I’ll always love this record for personal reasons, but would LOVE to see this remastered. Others from Giant Records too like: Grave Goods, UC, Government Issue, etc. Verbal Assault’s Trial has already been given an upgrade and it’s amazing. Giant was onto something with this unique era of matured post-hardcore.

@@voivodOfficial You and Crash are both fantastic. Tom Lyle is trying to have them repressed on vinyl.
@@martinaxe6390 Thanks for the heads up. I've been actively checking Discogs for a decent price on "You."
@@voivodOfficial Good luck. I was surprised to see Field Day going for around $50.
It bothers me when music this good goes unnoticed by most humans.

Still such a banger. I feel lucky we had this
This is the first dag nasty record I listened to. It’s been over 31 years but it’s still my favorite dag nasty record.

The Shawn stuff is the best. Go listen to some SWIZ for more Shawn goodness.
Peter Cortner best Dag Nasty singer
REALLY? Always thought Can I Say is absolutey perfect album and everything else left me a bit flat. Dave Smalley has it for me.
I agree. I dug Can I Say when it first rolled out and thought Dave Smalley had a kinda Kermit The Frog or Pee Wee Herman thing going on in his voice.
@@voivodOfficial that was exactly what I disliked about Dave Smalley's. Though no hint of that Kermit the Frog tone in early DYS.
Peter Cortner rulez
También en Los Vampiros y Field Day
Peter is grest but Dave all the way for me

Amo este disco desde hace mil años
Love this LP
Thanks!
Still have this on cassette ... and no way to play it. Anyone know why it's not on Spotify?
Lots of "boombox" type stuff out there to buy and play cassettes on.
Que buen disco 🛹🛹🛹
their best by far - just picked up a copy on cassette (again)
thank you very much for this
Great album! All Hits!
Still a banger to this day
Don't mix your records when you've just discovered weed.
Gotta Get The RE-MIX of This.

There's also a 7" with Your Mine, All Ages Show, sounding a lot better.
I have this cd somewhere

This isn’t available on iTunes or Spotify, so there must be some sort of copyright issue. Does anyone know the reason?

Truly bizarre production choices. Could’ve been way better

Why is The Ambulance Song lowkey a cross between the theme songs to Seinfeld and Law & Order?
hahaha, now that's an odd take!
Can I say is a classic, top 30 hc/punk album. All other Dag Nasty albums are just ok, really.
The original first 2 albums are classic 👌💯👍
