Read the fine print on my VW Golf that I bought back in 2015. Turns out their proprietary version of Onstar could track location and vehicle data even if I canceled the subscription. It could also technically receive signals to remotely control door locks, and plausibly the engine and brakes too. Took it home and the first thing I did was open the dash and removed the gps/communication antenna box that enables that kind of remote monitoring and control. I feel you, JP.
I was fortunate enough to find a lot of detailed vw specific forum posts and online support for this operation. I did have to install a makeshift jump between two lines on the same cable to retain the in cab microphone functionality, but the car has undergone multiple state inspections and auto shop services and not one of them has mentioned any faults or error codes.

I had my AC set at 78. It was 78 in my house. The humidity was unbearable. I set the AC to 77 so that it would run and pull some of the humidity out of the air for a few minutes. I stood there and watched the screen. Without the air coming on, the screen switch the temp to 77. The AC lied. I was furious; but hey, at least I didn’t have to pay to run my AC.

Something just hit me really hard. Jordan Peterson (rightfully) states, that a car stands for radical autonomy and privacy. Those are the exact two issues that I'm struggling with the most in my life. Pretty severely, actually. I need those two more than anything, but thanks to some childhood trauma programming, I'm absolutely, 100% unable to take them. No matter how hard I work on it, I almost never allow myself true autonomy and privacy. You can compartmentalise certain parts of your personality. I really disagree on the car bit. Car centric cities are the opposite of actual freedom. The symbol of which, suburbia, is figuratively an urban hellhole. We really don't need cars in cities themselves or should accommodate for them. I live in the NL right now and cities are just more liveable with a good public transport and biking infrastructure.

As if I didn't already admire him, I couldn't agree more about the cars. For so many it's not just about necessity and utility but autonomy and freedom. As soon as they get our cars, they limit ALL of our mobility. I know it's already coming; OnStar, self-driving, BMW subscription based options. It's a horrifying prospect, but I'll be sure to keep my analog sports car for quick escapes.

If the State starts to implement autonomous control of vehicles, I think older less technical vehicles will become really desirable and sought after.

Something just hit me really hard. Jordan Peterson (rightfully) states, that a car stands for radical autonomy and privacy. Those are the exact two issues that I'm struggling with the most in my life. Pretty severely, actually. I need those two more than anything, but thanks to some childhood trauma programming, I'm absolutely, 100% unable to take them. No matter how hard I work on it, I almost never allow myself true autonomy and privacy. Some twisted, pathological part of me is always attached to the people around me, suggesting to me, that I'd abandon them, if I did my own thing. I really disagree on the car bit. Car centric cities are the opposite of actual freedom. The symbol of which, suburbia, is figuratively an urban hellhole.
We really don't need cars in cities themselves or should accommodate for them. I live in the NL right now and cities are just more liveable with a good public transport and biking infrastructure.
I totally agree. I’m disappointed that JP has fallen victim to the propaganda put out by car and oil companies. Cars are a terrible symbol of freedom because they require an insane amount of investment into infrastructure beyond the costs of the car directly. A much better symbol of freedom is a bicycle since you can go pretty much anywhere without needing to buy anything else.
