The realization that the banjo is just one of a dozen instruments that Josh plays brilliantly is humbling. Truly a top drawer musician.
Great tribute, especially given that Jerry Garcia played the banjo too.
Great name and comment.
he is so talented
more amazing is that he plays banjo with clawhammer and roll style. Legitimately two drastically different techniques.
Josh and Carson doing a basic “stringed instruments and vocal harmonies” tune. The reason I subscribe. Mooooore!
Me too .
Ditto.
Threeto ...😇
They both do great solo, and ensemble work. But when it’s just the two of them, magic happens.
Gotta be the hardest working Zoom H2 in the business, I never get over just how ridiculously magic these performances are.
zoom H2 is great, mine's USB connectivity (microphone mode) has died... it still works on battery or D/C power tho... i was using it as my main computer mic for 12+ years...
oh my god the banjo arrangement... 😍❤
It has that fresh flavor of blackberry blossoms!
Damn, that solo ripped. And love the claw hammer technique.
Right. This is incredible. Its really refreshing to see someone playing 3 finger without picks. And mixing in the clawhammer with it. Im not even big on the dead but i always like them when i hear it. This has sold me.
God you’re right it’s a blackberry blossom tribute , great spot
@@nicholasresch9614I’m the same way, I can’t play for shit with finger picks lol. So uncomfortable. I wish I could tho, just for the resonance/volume. Sometimes it’s just not loud enough without picks.
Love the Blackberry Blossom in the midst of all that.
the blackberry blossom break is most excellent!
You guys harmonize like brothers!
Thank you for the excellence.
Thay have been singing together since Jr High
Love how well Blackberry Blossom fits in the banjo break - great job, fellas!
I'm totally using blackberry blossom for my break next time I play this! Love it!
@@shadwilliams6270 me, too
My late duo partner Larry and I used to do this song every weekend in a coffee house for years. Audience fav. Brought a tear to my eye. Well done!
Whoa. I need a moment. Thanks, lads. Used to love playing this with my friends. Didn't sound like this when we did it, but it felt like this in our hearts. I appreciate you unlocking my memory for a few minutes there, truly.
Thank you you will never know how comforting it is to find someone under 65 that knows the Grateful Dead let alone sing one of their songs ✌️
Great cover of a great song Josh and Carson. How about Ripple next with Toni and Reina? I had a year of banjo lessons as a kid, now teaching myself piano at age 64. 🎹 👍
And please segue into "Brokedown Palace" the way the Dead did on American Beauty.
Carson has a wonderful voice!
Bluegrass Dead?! That’s a special kind of awesome. And indeed it has some pizazz. This is a keeper for your live shows.
The two of you singing together is one of the best things ever! Love your two voices together.
This is what the grammys need music with soul
Love the Blackberry Blossom part!
Very creative arrangement :)
It is! It's so obvious when you think about it too, it's right there!
Great claw hammer technique on the banjo Josh!
And Carson, so smooth on your strumming and walking chord progressions while singing so effortlessly and great!
Had me singing right along….brought me right back to when my life was so much simpler and kind…
Those harmonies! Great to see you and Carson duetting again. Beautiful sounds all round. Thank you Josh
Such a timeless and iconic song, and of course you two bring it through your own interpretation so brilliantly. Josh's decision to perform his part on banjo is a lovely nod to Jerry's years in his teens as a banjo teacher. Love it!
One of my fave Dead songs! I’m fortunate and old enough to have seen them live when they toured Europe! Thanks guys!
Wow really? Best era by far for them i envy you your past…
Best memories!
I've been watching the two of you, since you covered 'Don't Think Twice It's Allright'.You're great as always.
Yes the performance is great, that's a given! I just want to thank you fellas for the incredible audio quality. Great work as usual.
I'd love to see another tutorial on how they get such a ridiculous sound out of the Zoom!!
@@briangorman1079 That would be awesome. I have a zoom h5 that I dabble with, it would be great to learn from the pros 😉
@@briangorman1079 He did one already 6 years ago!

Damn, Carson's voice hits hard.
One of the best versions of this song ever. These two are so talented!!
ok..This is weird. I just listened to this last weekend after several years, and suddenly you guys do an excellent cover of it today.
Man. You guys ALWAYS bring it. Thanks for your musicianship. You and all your friends light up RUclips! 2:56
Absolutley
Hey, the Blackberry Blossom-on-Banjo thing is GREAT. Fits like a glubb.
I just watched the 2009 version. It's amazing to see how far you guys have come since then. I mean, you were amazing even 14 years ago, but it's just awesome to see that you're still playing together and that you've got a certain depth to you now!
Love to see you doing some Grateful Dead! Been following you for years and the Dead are my favorite band! Wonder mix!
Also, Jerry Garcia was a big banjo player and lover so I’m sure he would appreciate this!
would love to hear Josh and his crew do Ripple
@@stevekline6093 Agree--Jerry loved the side projects!
1:24 to 1:54 banjo solo is so structured and precise and flowing, somehow I imaged seeing a square dance group, or even an Irish River Dance troupe having a great time dancing and stomping it out.
That section is the fiddle tune "Blackberry Blossom", which they cleverly inserted as the solo section for this tune
I've been following you for years. Your love of music is so intense and communicative. Carry on guys! You make life more beautiful!
I'm a child of the 70's and early 80"s. I never was much into the Grateful Dead but I enjoyed this arrangement of this song. And a shout out to Carson and Josh...been following you two for several years now and I have enjoyed the journey both of you have took us ( your fans ) on over the years.
Bro that clawhammer banjo. Wow. Never cease to be amazed.
Josh, what CAN'T you do? That was great banjo playing
Almost an Irish melody to that banjo solo. Awesome rendition
Jerry is up there somewhere, smiling.
quite impressive how you wove Blackberry Blossom in the break, excellent job
Here they are again knocking it out of the park.👍
Getting pretty mean on that banjo, Josh! Flatt and Scruggs smiling down😄
Never gets old...Carson and Josh giving a stunning performance showcasing incredible musicianship only to hear, at the end, some understated comment like, "hmmm...that one had some pizzazz." 🤣 The guitar and banjo arrangements are top shelf! I love and appreciate these covers. Thanks again guys!
I wish I could express how good O think these guys are... but you already knows.
I knew it! With the amount of musical talent of you two, the devil had to have had a finger in the pie.
Funny how you remember certain moments so clearly. I remember the exact 3-way intersection I was turning at when this channel first popped into my feed. Martha My Dear cover. I remember being blown away at the duo. Still feels just as magical now years later. Keep it up guys!
You guys are awesome! I celebrate everytime this duo appears on the release feed. Cheers from Brazil!
I stumbled over what I could possibly comment to justify this masterful video-
It’s astounding. The musicianship, arrangement, musical and video execution. I just adore what you all do and the vision for this channel.
love the switch to clawhammer halfway through! first time i've seen you play that style, sounds great
First song ever I already play before watching you! It usually goes: you upload a song, I say "why, that's awesome" and put it in my setlist.
The banjo solo is Blackberry Blossom
More Grateful Dead please ! This was stellar.
That was off-the-charts good. Loved it
Man I’d love a transcription of this. Playing a wedding later this year and the bride wants some Dead. I’d love to bust this rendition out.
You guys are always a pleasure to listen to. But today that banjo really took me back. My grandpa played the banjo like that.
So much talent and expertise. Love the open back banjo.
What an anachronism you are Josh Turner. Amazing. Love your talent. You go back in time as me. Born in 54.
Should
Awesome! Sounds great, very true to the Dead. Vocals are right on. Please do a bunch of covers from American Beauty. Please please please!!! Thanks for the fantastic music you two have posted on RUclips. Very much appreciated!
I was super excited when I saw that this dropped and of course y'all did not disappoint. Thank you for helping keep music alive!
Still hoping for a cover of Dylan's "Positively 4th Street" with a hammond organ - I think you guys would absolutely smash it.
Excellent Low harmony, then high,an incredible banjo solo exploding into the vocal bridge , snazzy punctual ending . Great lead vocal playing and singing
Wow. My favorite dudes on RUclips just covered my favorite band. Bravo! Will share.
🙌 We're not worthy! We're not worthy!🙌
Wow. I saw the Dead in 1970 at Middlesex Community College for $.35. Yes 35 cents. Friend of the Devil is my favorite Dead song as the guitar picking in it is virtuoso level. Josh and Carson are right up there. I have been watching their youtube productions for years and I am continually impressed.
I was at the MCC concert too. NRPS first.
Great show!!!
Great as always. Carson, nice descending bass line and singing all the while. And frailing the banjo - another step up, y'all.
"hmmm, That one had some real pizazz!" Sure did! Best cover of this song ever!
This is one of my go to songs everytime I pick up a guitar.
Deux artistes. Quel plaisir de les entendre.
I liked how you hid blackberry blossom in!
Great cover, you really did it justice lads. I also like the facial expressions of the guy on the left! It's hard to explain why but they really add to the song.
The banjo playing takes it to another level.
Garcia would like this...I got to see him perform about a year before he passed great job guys...
That was perfection. Really enjoyed the subtle feel of your collaboration and the picking was fresh!
Robert and Jerry are smiling. Beautiful cover.
My father-in-law is a major Deadhead, he got me hooked on this song.
Never heard this song before, but I doubt it could be done any better.. Pure delight to listen to.. :D
Check out the Grateful Dead :)
Well, give the Good Ol' Grateful Dead playing it a shot. But don't listen for "better" just different. They've done it acoustic, electric,fast,slow... Check it out.
@@SteamDougy Thanks, I will! :)
You’ve got slow live version and fast. Here is a nice slow

This one is a little more like this version Garcia & Grisman

Studio version, they are all good in their own right

@@Stonecrow25 I think you must be a hard core fan to enjoy that version, but thats just my opinion. I am watching earlier versions to see if I am missing out, but so far, not feeling it.
Guys, what a pleasure as always. Something on another level.
Great to see the boys back missed you both.
A little blackberry blossom thrown in for the hardcores.
My grandfather played the piano, the banjo, and the "banjolin" (look it up!). What kills me is that I never asked him to teach me how to play. I have his banjo and banjolin, both made in the early 1920's and in reasonably good shape, but cannot play. It kills me to see the ease with which Josh plays and know that I let that ability slide past me. But I do love listening to Josh and friends ever so much, and love this rendition!
Outstanding, gentlemen! Loved the guitar/banjo combo. Instruments and vocals beautifully blended. Please come back to the UK and do this number!!
I wonder if Carson's sniff at the end of the video was a salute to Jerry Garcia. I got the joke. Anyway, great job guys!
Hearing you guys singing acapella is honey and milk to my ears.
Josh and Carson playing some bluegrass dead? yeah that was a fast click. Love u guys
Got a soft spot in my heart for these old-school Zoom H2 only covers of you two 😍
What is wrong with the music industri? This is music presented by skilled artists. Thank you ❣
Seriously. The "music industry" rolls out a lot of crap.
One of my favorite songs ever. Love these guys!
A little Blackberry Blossom inspiration on the banjo break? Great version!
I love that you guys still occasionally use the handheld recorder as the mic. Sometimes simpler is better. Keep it up fellers.
Bellissima questa versione con un grande banjo di una delle più belle canzoni dei Dead!
I fucking love this song. I fucking love Josh's channel. You guys nailed it.
Josh + Carson + The Dead = Magic! Yay!
I just realized after at least 2 years of being subbed that there is nothing out there that makes me get off my butt and grab my guitar more than your music.
the brotherly banter at the end of the takes and eye contact mid solos, is what I'm here for... and the musicianship of course!
Wow, the way you incorporated Blackberry Blossom into the solo is brilliant! I love this!
Love the camera: continuous, starting subtle, getting more invested the longer it goes.
Always underlining: yes, this is all from one take; we did it until we had a good one! You’re welcome.
Makes me feel invited.
I bought myself a guitar a couple of months back. It's faulty. It doesn't have this level of pazzazz. I'm taking it back!🎸
Holy crap, the banjo music is heavenly. Great job guys, thank you for sharing. “I love banjo music!”
These guys are great together, tight jams. Nice!
I couldn't click on this fast enough. Incredible song and an incredible cover. Love the banjo!
I was just watching your live in London concert, such a great show guys. I must say Josh, your banjo playing is phenomenal in this, loved the whole thing🌈
