  • Emmy-winning actor A Martinez joins Rob Word to discuss his role in the hit series, LONGMIRE, and his journey to securing the part. A shares his casting experience, how Australian actor Robert Taylor was selected for the role of Sheriff Walt Longmire, and how Craig Johnson, author of the best-selling mystery novels, ensures authenticity to Native American culture.
During A's successful stint on the Emmy-winning soap opera SANTA BARBARA, he had the opportunity to star alongside Indigenous actor Gary Farmer in the acclaimed spiritual road movie, POW WOW HIGHWAY. Viewers will also hear stories about A's dramatic death scene with Joe Spinell in the splatter fest, WALKING THE EDGE, and his experience working with Robert Forster in that film and on Forster's series, NAKIA. Additionally, the story behind A's unique name will be revealed.
The video concludes with highlights from the annual gathering of the Western Writers of America in Montana, featuring author Craig Johnson, Marcus Red Thunder, A, and moderator Kirk Ellis.

Excellent episode, Rob! Although I've seen it previously and, although I've never seen ANY of the shows that were talked about, you always bring out the best of an especially good guest. The fact that these stories can be both entertaining and informative to someone who is clueless about A and his work (excepting, of course, "The Cowboys") says a whole lot about both of you.

OK, I hope this is a bonus episode because it just a bonus in so many ways. I just raved about last weeks episode with you and A. Martinez, because your conversations are just so damn compelling. They're full of personal asides and facts about the people and projects that A has been a part of or has intimate knowledge of. He is so articulate, and the two of you verbally dance in tandem. So I get even more of this magic, and on a Wednesday instead of waiting for Sunday morning. The TV shows and films that A has been a part of and his description of just being a working actor for fifty years, in a business that is first off a business.
I'm going to minorly quibble with him referring to Garry Farmer as a great American actor. Now if he'd said great actor or great North American actor I'd have no complaint, but Garry is a Canadian born in Ontario. I'll grant that he grew up partially in the US but he been a prominent factor in the Canadian TV, film, and music industry for decades.
A Martinez's character in Longmire is one of the many things that make this a good show. I believe you've show the Longmire panel clips in other episodes or at least parts thereof but I get something different from each showing. Again when you and A got talking about the books and then Craig Johnston got talking about about the casting of the show, now I need to buy and read twenty-five books. I used to convince myself that I could get by with just watching the TV show but I know that there's more in the books than can be put into a script and actually make it to broadcast. Rob you really need some sort affiliate link for all the books you've made me locate and buy, or at the very least read if I couldn't get a copy.
Great episode. As an aside I love the room in your house that you conducted the interview in with the great art like the bronze of Coming Through the Rye by Frederic Remington, the Ben Johnson bronze, and if I'm not mistaken even Walt Disney and Mickey. Plus the paintings, few set designers could envision a more perfect environment for a chat.

Thanks for your kind words and for the good catch regarding Gary, Jim. Sloppy on my part, since I'm well aware of his Canadian roots, and the way he's revered there. The older I get, the more mistakes I make -- words keep coming out of my mouth, but they're not always the right ones. Appreciate your great take here, man, and I know you'll enjoy Craig's books!

BRING BACK LONGMIRE, A Martinez's character was so good, you didn't know if you liked him or hated him. He was trying to help the indigenous people yet trying to balance power, corruptions & the law with sheriff LONGMIRE. The whole cast was great
They need to continue where they left off where Katie LONGMIRE is running for sheriff. But most of all more indigenous native American actors & actresses. More powerful & realisti.
