Two of the men responsible for the success of the beloved soap opera, "Santa Barbara," A Martinez (ex-Cruz) and Jerome Dobson (Co-creator and co-head writer) join the Michael Fairman Channel for a live conversation on Friday night ,June 21st beginning at 9 pm ET/6 pm PT.
Recently, A and Jerry were honored at the Daytime Emmys as they were selected to be Gold Circle Inductees for their enduring accomplishments and work within the genre for 50 years.
A is currently part of the cast of "The Bay" as Nardo, in which he received a Daytime Emmy nomination for his work this year. Martinez is also remembered for his roles on General Hospital as Roy DeLuca, One Life to Live as Ray Montez and Days of our Lives as Eduardo Hernandez; among other TV and motion picture roles.
However, A's most memorable role in soaps, and the one that won him a Daytime Emmy, was that of Cruz Castillo on "Santa Barbara", for which he took home the gold for his work in 1990.
Jerry created "Santa Barbara" with his wife, the late Bridget Dobson, and the couple became soap-famous for not only their work on SB (1984-1986, 1991-1992), but their time head-writing for General Hospital (1973-1975), Guiding Light (1975-1980) and As the World Turns (1980-1983).

Santa Barbara is/was the best soap in its prime. There will never be another like it. Growing up, my day was really informed by the status of Cruz and Eden's relationship!
I am 55 years old and I have watched every soap, on and off. Mostly ABC soaps. I had four grandmothers growing up (step-parents) and they all watched different soaps. I got hooked. But, I can state matter-of-factly that Santa Barbara was the best soap opera ever produced! Drama, heart, humor, great acting, writing, music and directing!
Wonderful to meet and hear from Jerome Dobson. What a gentleman! And A Martinez always blows me away with his articulate and big hearted thoughts, observations and great stories. Thanks for this wonderful interview Michael!
A is top tier actor in any generations. I watch a lot of crime shows from the past and A was really young in all of them. I mean 19/20. Wow. He has a lot of body of work.

I loved SB. I started watching in 86 in high school with the beach scenes with Haley and Ted and Jane. I remember Cruz and Eden at the Orient Express. I remember how great the music was for each scene. You could hear waves during the beach scenes. I remember Mary and Mason. And her getting killed with the giant C. What a cast! Congrats A and Jerome.
I was home sick from school when I started watching SB and watching the best wedding I've ever saw of Cruz and Eden! Loved ithe acting and costumes!!!! I was a fan of his since he was on Archies Place!

Merci pour cette belle interview où nous apprenons plein de choses sur SB, sans l ingéniosité des créateurs Dobson nous n'aurions jamais pu voir le couple Eden&Cruz à la TV...et sans Marcy et A nous n'aurions jamais pu vivre toutes ces émotions. Quelle paire d acteurs merveilleux et uniques ils ont été, ils sont inégalés à ce jour dans le monde des soap opera ! Ils nous ont fait rire et pleurer, ils ont su tout jouer grâce à l'amour et le respect qu ils avaient l un pour l autre. Leurs scènes étaient toutes magiques, ils ont fait chavirer le cœur de millions de fans à travers le monde il y a près de 40 ans et encore aujourd'hui je les regarde sur YTube, ils nous procurent de l adrénaline 💓, I have just one word to say : Thank you very much to Bridget / Jerry Dobson and A / Marcy 💗💖💕you are changed my life ...
I was in grade school when I started watching Santa Barbara, during the earthquake episodes. I was hooked! I enjoyed the 1985-87 years, but for some reason after that the show started to change with so many recasts and introduction of new characters, that's when I lost interest. But, the Capwells and Lockridges were the best families on a soap. A Martinez is a very sexy man, he matched the role of Cruz Castillo. I wished they would reboot SB in some form, would be interesting to see how these families have fared today, but then again Nicholas Coaster and Jed Allen are no longer with us, so it would have to be Judith McConnell (Sophia) and Louise Sorel (Augusta) to be the family heads!
There is a Santa Barbara TV Series on RUclips with the first 87 episodes uploaded to watch! I hope with more episodes to come. Just wanted to let everyone know if they wanted to bring back the good old days if a great soap!
Such an amazing interview, I was in awe at the beginning, when Jerome said "I can use some stories!" - meaning he's still creating and as sharp as one can be. Such an inspiration.
I'm a testament to SB's popularity among the Russian-speaking audience. I grew up in Israel, visited Russia back in 1993 with my mom, and watched it with my relatives. Once we returned we had to connect to satellite service to keep watching it (and it's not like we didn't have something to watch in Israel, but the series themselves were so fascinating, and the dubbing was so good).
So for Russian-speaker Santa Barbara is a part of the language, when someone says "what a Santa Barbara!" it means "That's a shitload of drama right there" :)))
And I remember a joke from that time - a Russian grandma is discussing a hypothetical trip abroad with her friend. She says: "I want to go to Santa Barbara!" and her friend asks: "Why there?" and she answers "Because I know everyone there!" Seems lame, but that is just reflective of the meaning and impact it had on people.
I watched several scenes and episodes on RUclips from Dobson's time on Guiding Light. It was excellent writing at a time when soaps were character-driven not plot-driven.
Comment Part II: Santa Barbara completely changed my opinion of Soaps! Also, I LOVED Longmire and A’s character-well all the characters and writing!
