Killing grass and replacing with plants, especially native ones is hard work! I worked on a conservation crew for 3 years and still struggle with it! You did amazing! I would just suggest getting many more so they can collectively fight off the grass 💪🏻 Love this content, you're never boring! ❤

Gardener and full time mom of two little boys with autism here and let me tell you, gardening is such a wonderful thing! It brings family together! Like it has for thousands of years.
It brings new life, gives such a feeling of accomplishment once its done because all that hard work will have been SO worth it, and determination!

No one should tell you that you did anything incorrect! The fact that you did all of this is impressive and it made you happy!! Loved this and keep us updated!!!!
You need a tiller instead of a cultivator! You can rent one or hire someone who has one and who comes and does it for you (my dad and step mom did that for their garden and highly recommend). It’s essentially like a big spiral blade that really breaks up the soil so the roots of your plants can get down in there. Also, you’re gonna want to buy some good nutrient-rich top soil and maybe some compost or other soil amendments. Your local garden store should have recommendations for what’s best for the soil in your area and what plants you want to grow. Happy gardening!!

This year is my first mother's day as a mom. I had my baby 1/11/23 a week before my due date (39 weeks pregnant) when all of a sudden she stopped moving and her heart had stopped and I had to deliver her stillborn. Chris, I just discovered you not too long after I had my daughter and your videos have helped me tremendously through my grief. Your sense of humor is nothing but amazing and I will forever owe you for being my muse. Thank you for being you, always 💜

Cardboard under some dirt is a great way to get rid of the weeds growing! It decomposes and I have had 0 weeds so far, and when you go to plant something just cut a small hole! Gardening is actually the hardest workout I swear, looks so good!

I love the new garden space and am so happy you and your mom could do it together. I can imagine a bench out there to enjoy the peace and quiet. For the rest on the other side of the fence, look into No Dig planting. Basically you put down plain cardboard boxes or a thick layer of newspaper, spread loads of topsoil or manure over it and come back in 6 months. During that time you can plan your garden layout and source your plants. When you go to plant all the grass and roots will be killed off and the soil enriched. You dig a hole and put the plants in.

i hate being outside and basically will never plant my own garden … BUT oh boy do i love watching this content from you! you seem genuinely sooo happy and it makes us viewers excited with you!
If you find any blank spots in the garden or if you’re in need of some filler you can get some native plant/wild flower seeds and sprinkle them in any empty spaces!
I know the stress of this whole house process was stressful af. But seeing u fully enjoy and build a space to suit u specifically is such a beautiful inspiring thing to witness. ☺️

I feel so bad you're going to have to get a gardening company in there to get rid of those grassroots or all that grass. It's just going to come wildly back. When you shoveled up the sod. You should have taken it out instead of leaving it in I feel so bad because I know how much work that was. But if you don't remove the grassroots it's going to be all for nothing😮❤

The tarp/weed barrier really does the work in gardens! Best gardening hack I've ever found! Just stake the weed barrier down after tilling(cultivating) cut the hole a little bigger (usually 3-4 inches in diameter) & put in the plants, Then you only have to pull any weeds that grow around each plant and you get so much more. You & your mom did a great job, and there's nothing better than your own veggies! Congrats!

Chris google the no dig method. Cardboard on the grass and pile compost on top. I've had good luck with this method so far.

I feel terrible coming in hot after the fact, but the best way I've found to kill a crap-ton of grass is to use cardboard. Lay it where you want it, wet it down so it conforms to the yard, put some stones on it to keep it in place, and leave it for a few days. Best part is that you don't have to remove it when you want to plant; just cut a section to dig a hole for your plants and mulch over the top. It'll break down naturally!

Find native wild flower seed pack at your local garden store to fill in around your other plants. That would look gorgeous and it’s easy just throw and water!

I would have used the cultivar to amend the soil with many bags of compost. Give the plant roots lots of nutrients. And maybe add mulch between plants so the grass doesn’t grow back.
As a landscaper you did great for a novice! I for sure thought you’d give up r when I saw the tarp and rake theory. So naturally I’m going to give you unsolicited advice here, put some edging in and lay down some mulch (dark brown looks best) and a drip line so you can just set a timer from the sprinkler system for watering :)

Gardening is literally my favorite thing to do ever. I've only been doing it for a few years. It's definitely a trial and error sort of thing. But you're doing great. I found it better for me to use raised garden beds, especially for my vegetable gardens. But I can't wait to see your garden grow and flourish. Good luck queen. ❤
