Michael Schenker has always been an artist who never made false compromises. Even when he was the guitarist in world famous bands such as The Scorpions or UFO, his unique style soon became the trademark sound at the time for each of these bands. By the end of the seventies, the typical confines of being in a band began to limit Michael Schenker more and more.
So he took the obvious logical step to quit UFO, and to form his own band - The Michael Schenker Group. Together with Billy Sheehan (bass), Denny Carmassi (drums) and singer Gary Barden he recorded the self-titled MSG debut in 1980, which to this day remains one of the strongest albums Schenker has recorded.
However, for the following tour, the line-up had already been changed, and few fans today would not regard this later personnel as in fact the most perfect: Schenker and Barden were joined by Chris Glen (bass), Paul Raymond (keyboards) and last but not least the legendary Cozy Powell who already had played drums with Rainbow, and later with Whitesnake, Black Sabbath, Brian May or Gary Moore, just to name a few. It was Cozy Powell’s drumming especially, that crafted and stabled the performance of this formation - and this Rockpalast concert remains one of the outstanding performances before his death in 1998.
Recorded on January, 24th 1981 at the Markthalle in Hamburg, this concert presents the first MSG album almost in its entirely (and almost in the same running order) including the two greatest songs Michael Schenker has created with UFO: “Doctor Doctor” and “Rock Bottom”.
After more than 20 years this brilliant and intense hard rock document finally is available to all fans in perfect quality.

Every note is beautiful, penetrating and meaningful. He doesn't just wail away meaninglessly like others. The tone and choice of notes is beyond brilliant. There is nobody like him, he separates himself from the others.
I think Bryan May is the same case. Each note with a purpose and meaning. I thank God for living at the same time as these excellent musicians.
@@Trapa73 agreed 👍🏻
Indeed! Well said.
All that, huh?
I feel the same exact way. He's the best. No one comes close for me. He's the essential metal/hard rock guitarist. Who wants to go up against his riffs and progressions? Michael Schenker. No competition.
2024 and Michael is still kicking ass.
And back to playing a Gibson V
@@scottdunn2178 gibbies are overpriced yet one of the only brands I like 👍🏻
Would NEVER get a Dean.
RIP Cozy Powell!!!
And also RIP Paul Raymond, UFO and MSG guitar and keyboards
😢Cozy
😢 Raymond
You rocked us all.

Saw him with Priest. He was untouchable.
Rest in peace Paul Raymond!
Cozy too!
Gotta give massive props to the late Paul Raymond, a true rock star and one of the very best complimentary players ever in hard rock. Schenker and the entire band are on fire here, even the dorky Gary Barden
He was very versatile with his solid string & key skills and even vocals !
I was lucky enough to see the guys on this tour . I was about 5 ft from Mr Schenker, awesome show . No gimmicks, no crap just a damn good band . Miss those days , glad I was there .
I was front row...seated on the floor with the stage about 3 feet off the ground, in front of the blonde bomber at the Agora Ballroom in Atlanta, Georgia, on October 10, 1978...to see UFO (Raymond, Mogg, Parker, Way, Schenker) two weeks before SITN was recorded...so you know what form Schenker was in. A magical night. Ate tickets to see Neil Young's Rust Never Sleeps tour the same night at the Omni. I think I chose the more important show...!
I saw them a few years later at a small club in Oakland. I was also a few feet away. I saw Robin Trower atvthe same club around the same time. I think it was around 85. Mcauley Schenker Group.
@@mechanic6682 yes I had hair back then lol . Merry Christmas 🎄🎅🏻🍺🍺🥃
Absolute classic , back in the good old days 🎸🎸🎸🎸
You got that right!!
When life was far simpler my friend
still fresh after 42 years. awesome
And Chris Glen on bass... Not to forget...!! 👍👍
No autotune, just raw talent, as Lemmy would say. this is rock´nroll
And 3 finger lead guitar playing
Killer line-up ... Schenker, Barden, Powell, Raymond and Glen ....
RIGHT SIR . KILLER LINEUP.
Very pure, straight German Rock. With The instructor's label of quality. Made in Germany highly prouded.
I think there's only one German there. All the others are English or American.
Rockpalast simply the best thank the lord for youtube so us Brits have the chance to see these gems of music history and legendary concerts ie UFO MSG BIG COUNTRY SIMPLE MINDS U2 BOWIE THE CULT REM THE WHO VELVET UNDERGROUND GUNS AND ROSES ETC ETC ETC AMAZING
UTT - WILL RISE AGAIN!
Great seeing cozy Powell , lost way to soon
Schenker at his best. Shame there isn't more UFO with Schenker footage.
The whole band is genius, tight and Michael is the magician!
Great singer Gary Barden
Not even close on the U.F.O. songs his voice doesn’t fit the Phil Moog style that made the UFO songs classics on the Strangers in the night !!
@davidday8417 that's not Ufo but Msg, different line up, different songs, etc, glad it's not the same...........
@@JeanAlainXavier-ze9jc I’m talking about the few UFO songs that they did !! The singer has to high of voice for them Lights Out,Rock Bottom,Natural Thing those songs !!!
@@davidday8417Face it, even Robin McCauley or Doogie White could not do what Phil does... He is just unique in a good way. I saw UFO in late 2019 and for a 72 year old chap, he still sounded good.
Best guitarist i've never seen live
Absolutely, saw him a few months ago and he hasn’t lost any of his skill at all , he is still a superb talent on guitar 😊
Love the first 5 MSG but my favorite the first one opening with armed and ready
1.MSG
2. Assault Attack
3.The Michael Schenker Group
4. One Night At Budokan
5. Built To Destroy
An amazing Show!Schenker is the best.
Holy hell... It´s Cozy Powell on the drums.
I was fortunate enough to see Micheal and Paul Raymond with UFO in 77 and 78 saw the UFO live album they opened for Rush, I also saw UFO open with Ozzy's first solo tour with Def Leppard great show, Randy shredded the guitar.
The 1st two MSG albums are by far their best work. Barden, powell and a young Schenker.......perfection!!!

died 1998 in a car accident....
Still remember playing the literal shit out of UFO's "Force It" in my later teens, been a huge fan ever since.
Gotta be an argument for Cozy being the coolest human being ever.
Gary Barden! Great shouter!!!
Saw him on this tour at the old Wolf/Rissmiller Country Club. This guy is such a great guitarist
That tone!.❤
We are Lucky for the uniqueness and kickass music
Loved this kind of music then and I still love it now - top concert with absolutely great musicians - Hamburg Markthalle was a great place to be, real good acoustic and real good spirit, too //
Fantastic!
Never heard of this band but they rock with the 80s sound like a transition to metal from hard rock. Solid drummer good bass and great guitar what else do you want.
so you have much to hear for the next years all his live concerts from Scorpions to MSG , all his fantastic LPs CDs , look here at YT its all here
Wow. Never heard of Michael Schenker. That is like saying Michaelangelo who?
Live at Budokan! What an album ❤
Cry for the nations
Incredible players
Michael keep at it!!! Thanx for posting!!
I loved UFO and sadly missed most of Schenkers work on his own. My mistake! Very competent musician and showman. Dang he can play
MSG is awesome as usual. He never goes near a mic, totally axe driven. It amazes me that Frank Marino could play like he does , and take on lead vocals , Marino and MSG are at the same master level of guitar, add the vocals to that and you have multi tasking at a high level.
Frank Marino is a freaking genius...he writes 'em, produces 'em, plays 'em and sings 'em. Nobody can touch the guy!
@@michaelehrhart9670 & @lovehategoddie Schenker & Marino are the two greatest yet most underappreciated guitarists of the era. (or any era) You see all these idiotic lists with the same mediocre old names ALL THE FUCKING TIME, yet rarely see these two crucial names. People SUCK sometimes with their close-mindedness. Thanks for mentioning the true masters.
@@michaelehrhart9670 grrr
@@michaelehrhart9670 If I had a choice, I'd much rather have Marino's knowledge and abilities.
WOW, this is MSG and Michael at their best! Schenker is on fire, and is there a better, more exciting drummer than Cozy Powell? Love this era of MSG!
Classic line - up & setlist! Sound absolutely brilliant here! Thanks for uploading!👑👍🤩
Superband of Michael. Live concert as hot as hell
Do anyone remember a 80s without MSG ,,his presence was omnipotent =) legend
Awesome 👏 thank you for the upload
Saw this tour at Glasgow Apollo !
Me too
Full time Quality Proof. Granted and proved. All of it, that thing, just very pure rough'n'straight - very heavy'n'hairy, 80's true metal.🎉❤😊
Just wow
Thanks

saw him on this tour. Floor crowd picked me up and moved me. nearly got crushed.
Id say it's to not stop watching micheal, the show @😊
My guitar hero from age 13-17 in 81 my band and I new lights out from the album note by note still the best!! Still my go to song!!
When your a killer drummer like COZY, it's all you need... ANALOG BABY !! 😁👍👍
Man,how good was Cozy🥲
his lead tone is ferocius
die beste MSG-Besetzung überhaupt!
Yes Cozy as well!!!
Carmassi and Sheehan recorded demos for the album, but the project was then aborted. Other musicians recorded the album with Schenker.
Legends
Great frosty day in Hamburg .MSG kicksAss, Markthalle my beloved Club
I have this DVD , best line up of MSG
Parabéns Michael gosto muito do UFO VOCE TOCA MUITO
Best MSG Line Up.
i was still in Grade School back then
Strongest 2nd finger in rock guitar 🎸
I think his strings are pretty light like 9's
Bloody algorithm spamming ads in the middle of guitar solos and songs grrr
He never uses his pinky! Amazing
awe and wonder,I am in awe and I can only enjoy the the "MAGIC "...😅
Sckenker, in all its essence.
Super!
Super!😊
I'm looking for the "On and on" live version that came out on a compilation album with other bands around 1984.
I was there !!!
Theres tons of people like Michael.its not a contest.
Is there anyone Cozy didn’t play with?
Abba
Yeah!
I wish Schenker still played that black and white Gibson V , its kinda Schenker iconic not quite the same as his Dean type. I read somewhere the original got nicked. Still buy MSG stuff regardless of the guitar type, he still rocks, listen to Universal.
He was playing a cream Gibson V last week for the whole show when i saw him in Belfast.....looks like he used it on the rest of last weeks UK tour as well.
Saw them in vancouver 4 or 5 years ago..he had 3 sets..he had all 3 singers..200 people ther..he would have played his heart for 10 people..20 buk for the ticket
looking out from nowhere ... killer solo ----
Love Schenker but I really just want to say "thank you" for the J. Geils Band clip you play at the begining of each post !
Long live Schenker - Long live Peter Wolf and the J.Geils Band !!
Soooo splendid!!! Crying guiter of Into The Arena that reminds me of my high school bands.
Would love to have the shirt that Cozy’s wearing.
Das waren Zeiten: Hail to the Seventies-Eighties!!
Eddie, Randy, Schenker
Heaven might be like this...
Michael Schenker was creating euro metal and Schenker was partly successful and the best.
BADASS! That's all...
Saw them open up for Cheap Trick at the Oakland Civic Auditorium. Somewhere in a box I have pictures that I took. I want to say that was 1980 or maybe 1981?
!!!!!!! !!!!!!! !!!!!!!
Great lineup ! Barden was the best MSG singer
Saw MSG last week with Robin McAuley.....he was really good at doing the classic MSG and UFO stuff.
Jeez how bad were the others ?
