I’ll be honest I never comment on RUclips videos. However, I have been playing the game 8 months and learning from mostly RUclips videos. I have struggled with my swing and especially struggling to get 6 and sometimes 7 irons in the air. I have been watching your videos the last few days and today I went on the course and all I can say is WOW. I followed your tips especially around the swing easy (before I was trying to murder the ball) and I hit so many more consistent shots it was unbelievable. I shot bad scores today but not because I kept topping shots or slicing them but because I was striking the ball so much better that it was going a lot longer than what I had down in terms of my yardages. You keep instructions so simple which is a massive help where as a lot of other people just to try complicate the simple things. Easily the best coach on here 👍🏻
Glad you took up golf. That's great. With this game you can literally have a lifetime of fun. Be careful not too follow too many teachers. We all see it differently. So combining methods can lead to serious issues. Choose a teacher and follow them. If it doesn't work then follow another one etc. Glad you tried what I teach and see the results. Killing it is not going to get you anywhere. Loosening up alone will save you a lifetime of frustration. Just keep at it and stay focused. Follow one teacher and work on one or two things. Do that and you will build a great swing.
This is why I always come back to this channel. Whereas dozens of other instructors tell you how to press your hands forward and toe in the club to achieve "shaft lean", you show the movements necessary to get shaft lean without *trying* to get shaft lean.
Exactly. Got to understand "why." If you don't know why ... you don't get it. So you try to physically make it lean. I have never worked on this one day in my life yet I have it. Just keep working on the fundamentals. People are always out there trying to create confusion. Simple is the key.
Amazing tip Paul! For the longest time I was always trying to manipulate the club to move forward. After your simple but profound explanation of tilt and how the shaft lean comes naturally as a result of that, this makes so much sense now.
I've played golf for almost 40 years. Used to be scratch. Raised a family and getting back into the sport. This quite possibly is the best video on the Internet for the intermediate to advanced golfer. I've implemented the techniques in this video at the range and the results have been remarkable.
That's great. I love working with guys like you because you already know how to use your body. The break then getting back into it got you hitting with the arms. This is due to human nature which I reference in my body swing book and videos. Stay focused. Keep the arms completely turned off and power it with you body.
Wow - another great simple explanation of the forward shaft lean to hit compressed iron shots! What I am hearing you say and demonstrate on the video is that if I use the fundamentals of the Body Swing, I don't need to fill my head with angles, etc. to get a forward shaft lean; instead, my body swing will already take that into account and I will be hitting with a forward shaft lean. Brilliant! So many other instructors out there on RUclips teaching "how to cover the ball" by bending the knees during the downswing so the forward shaft lean will occur - seems to me that would be very difficult to do and keep track of. They need to take a lesson from you on how to explain these topics to folks in a manner that is easy to understand and already taken care of in your Body Swing!
Yes. Too many people working on stuff they shouldn't. Get the shape of the swing by doing the positions I teach and you will get this. Do not rush through them. You need to do them precisely and daily in a mirror. I just always wanted the most change in the fewest moves. Even though I make it super simple people sorta kinda do the positions. Stay focused. If you see the 4 moves that I teach in pros swings then would you not look like a pro if you did them? You sure would.
I watch Paul long ago on him turn n my golf has improved by leaps n bound n play to single digit. I have return to basic today on shaft lean n Paul still teaching with those clear instructions. You are the best Paul. Thank u!!!

Very good. To many people try to get you to purposely lean it. That will never work because even if you do you will be manipulating the face. Just get the fundamentals. Did any of the old greats ever work on this? They didn't even have cameras fast enough to see impact.
For sure, I keep it super simple for that reason. Need to understand it. I repeat it because people are distracted and only remember 17%-25% of what they hear.
This video was a eureka moment for me. The notion that the club center on the body at address is replicated about a foot or so post impact has totally transformed my game and produces shaft lean without any effort at all.
Following Paulsr.body swing tips and as a 73 old having lost distance off tee have started to hit straighter and gained 25=30yds off the tee.Must learn to get rid of the "arm" action ingrained over the years

Exactly. A lot of this is understanding. If you don't see how something works or fits into the big picture why would you keep doing it? Hopefully, I am getting people to see and understand it.
I use to lean the irons forward too many times and too much chopping, hurt my wrists a few times also. It was the here on these videos I learned how to do it right, appreciate the help.

Thanks so much. I just try to keep it simple. It's really about knowing your student and giving them pieces that the can understand and actually do especially when the great majority only practice once a week. I just need people to understand it and try it (for more than 3 balls) and get the result. If they see they can do it and it makes a huge difference then maybe they will keep doing it so they take their swing to a new level. Too many people making this way to complicated.

This is a fantastic video. There are many instructors around at the moment teaching people to turn their left wrist down and hold it that way through impact and I see them and think "am I missing something here?" Wouldn't that mean your wrists would be rigid through the downswing? Another great lesson, thanks Paul.
Yeah, I've seen it all. What they are forgetting that if the face is open or closed only a few degrees at impact you will hit it sideways. A tick on a clock is 6 degrees. You don't have 6 degrees. So how is someone practicing once a week ever going be consistent turning their knuckles down. Good luck. I do this in my swing. Have I ever thought of doing it. NO. Get the fundamentals and this stuff happens on it's own.
Wow, I never realized I had a lean to my swing! Thanks Paul, my friends are telling me I’ve slowed down my swing (I haven’t) and that I’m hitting the ball so much straighter (neutral grip) than before with my strong grip that used to snap hook.
Well at least you are hitting it straighter. To slow down your swing you need to switch the power source from arms to legs. I am putting a lot of effort into it it's just not with my arms. Work on this tip and see if you can switch into the future. I am trying to build you a swing for life. Imagine when you are older. Swinging hard is not going to work.
The y-shape is very interesting and easy to understand. I have been trying to learn how to de-loft my irons, and thought forcing shaft lean was the answer. This seems like a less restrictive method and I will definitely be trying it out. Thank you
As you have just found out, trying to get the lean is not the answer and not necessary. The lean is due to the tilt. I have the lean and I have never worked on shaft lean. This term wasn't even around when I was a kid. You know who else has it? Every pro and better player from the past too. So without having this term and even thinking about it yet better players having it there has to be a reason it occurs. Also, purposely trying to do that leads to manipulating the clubface. If you are open or close just a few degrees you will hit it everywhere. So keep trying to hinge and rehinge loosening up your wrists. That is the arm unit. Then you have your body coiling and uncoiling. That is what hit the ball not the arms. Turn them off completely and you will hit it dead straight and pure.
Guess my teachers didn’t explain why head needs to be behind the ball on impact. They never explained why or how. Thank you!! This explains the avoidance of over the top as well. At least now I know how to slice at will if I need it too.
I had tons of questions as I was learning it that no one could answer. This is why I tell you "why." If you know why and see how that thing fits into the whole picture you will want to do it. Glad you are understanding it.
Glad you found me. I literally just shot a tip on it yesterday. Each club is 4 degree difference. A tick on a clock is 6 degrees. At the Taylor factory years ago the guy said tour players on average deloft it 6 degrees. This is one tick on a clock which is 1.5 clubs less. Now think about trying to hold this angle more. Lets say you do 2 ticks on a clock. 12 degrees. 3 clubs stronger. At some point you will have so little loft on your club you will have trouble getting it airborne. Plus, the thing they don't tell you is that you will have terrible distance control. Don't hold that much angle you hit it short. Hold more and you hit it long. So you end up driving yourself crazy because you never hit the ball the right distance. Finally, when you hold the angle to long the mass never gets to its widest point. If we are using simple physics of mass swinging around an axis you need mass to get to its widest point which is just after the ball is hit. So you hold the angle you never get to this point. Thanks for watching. I just do and say things differently. My students come from all over the world. They are only here for a few hours. In that time, I need them to hit it better than they ever have in their lives. Plus, I need to teach them how to fix their own swing. So I am always thinking fast and easy. Have thought this way since lesson 1 back in 1991.
That is fascinating because when I was being taught or learning the sport I never had to think about forward shaft lean because I was releasing the club through proper fundamentals.. those players that weren’t getting it we’re trying to hold onto the club to keep their hands forward and the club never released.. Paul you have expressed many times the golf swing is incredibly natural if you learn certain fundamentals and then just let the club swing..Cool..
Thanks so much. That holding it off is tricky. How do you square the face each time within a few degrees. This too effects your distance control. Lean too much and hit it long. I can't even remember a time I ever hit a ball over a green when I was hitting my club for my yardage yet you see these tour player do it all the time.
@@paulwilsongolf They did a study years ago it was a dynamic impact study where unbelievably they measured the tour players degree of loft at contact and they were all about 4° less than the standard loft of the golf club.. I didn’t believe it but it is true
I was at the TaylorMade factory years ago and the guy behind the computer and video equipment said on average they are 6 degrees defloted. So yes, I totally believe it.
@@paulwilsongolf and you were spot on there’s no way that you can square the club face within two or 3° when you’re swinging the club at 100 miles an hour there has to be something in your swing that allows the club to do it itself.. and by the way the two axes proposition is superb.. I haven’t heard any teaching professional really get into that with any simplified presentation..

Great explanation Paul.......it's amazing to see certain positions in the golf swing in photography..... but maybe one of the worst things for us amateurs to be looking at and trying to copy..... forcing those positions get us nowhere.......thanks
Exactly. You have to understand it first so you see its importance. Then you gradually start adding it to your swing. Takes time to change but if you know "why" you will keep doing it until perfected.
Paul thank you so much! This is exactly my issue. I'm locking up, even my toes haha, then overthinking about delofting/creating an angle...I'm topping 95% of all my shots, it's so so so frustrating. Also, I'm using ALL arms and NO lower body/hips. I would be your perfect project haha.

Another Great video Paul. This would be a good drill for the long winter months coming up. What other drills would you recommend to practice during the winter?
Yes, do this for sure. The winter is the best time to practice your swing. You are not hitting balls so you have no distractions. Once the season starts you are ready to play great golf instead of building the swing over the summer. You need to work on your grip and setup so you don't lose the positioning. Then the wrist hinge and rehinge to get it loose. Then firing the lower body so you get good at it.
My irons were a mess; fat, thin, low trajectory, etc. Found your tips 3 weeks ago. Already greatly improved and confidence returning. Hdcp Index dropped from 7 to 4 in 3 weeks (used to be a 4).Thank you Paul, youre a great teacher! Question: I developed shanks with short wedge shots. I'm thinking my hips are getting too far ahead of the ball on the downswing. Tried your tip about not "falling" toward the ball but didnt help. Suggestion?

Paul thanks for all your great tips. They’ve really helped with my driver but I’m still hitting my irons about 1 to 1.5 clubs shorter than my old swing, nice a straight just short. I know I have a tendency to not swing through on my irons and I’m concentrating on hinging the wrists etc. Still have trouble consistently compressing the irons
That is probably because you were delofting those clubs so you were getting a mis-read on your actual distance. No compression says there is still some arms in this swing too. Keep working on the hinge/rehinge. Get the angles sharper with more lag and loose wrists. Then start firing the lower body harder for more power. Use the ground.
Hi Paul I have to admit I started looking at your videos quite a while a go then got swallowed up in the sea of other videos that can be found on YT! I have been playing well lately but after my last round I come away thinking wow, my swing actually feels really hard to execute at the moment and lacking the consistency that I "occasionally" get. I remembered your videos and over the last week or so have been watching them and even comparing what you say against slow-mo videos (thanks to @MichaelJohnField) of the pros and you know what....you make a lot of sense! haha who'd of thought! Anyway I have just got back from my second range sessions implementing your teachings into my swing and yup..more proof that what you are teaching here makes complete sense. As I said I have been playing pretty well lately but honestly my ball striking felt on another level today and so effortless! This video in particular has been a great help as I was on of those that held on to my wrist angles to create shaft lean. Ahh the RUclips rabbit hole. Not fun when you get in there. Glad you decided to crawl out and you see the power in what I am teaching. Simple yet highly effective. Yeah that shaft lean is killing a lot of swings. 1 club is 4 degrees. 1 tick on a clock is 6 degrees. Every tick on a clock leaning forward is 1.5 clubs. So when people are pulling the handle 2 ticks it's 3 clubs. Sure you hit the irons long but now you run into trajectory issues as well as distance control issues. Plus an average player is never going to get long irons airborne. Funny how people see things in slow motion then try to work specifically on them instead of thinking that maybe that thing is happening by doing something else. As you see in the lean video I am not trying to lean it. It leans due to the right fundamentals. You certainly don't want too much lean. Thanks for mentioning that channel. This is exactly what I have been looking for. Perfect videos. Stay focused and make it simple.

Glad you see it. I probably haven't hit an approach shots 20-30 yards past the pin in 40 years. This is what these guys are doing. They are getting too much lean. They are pumped up and blow it way too long. Or they think they are going to hit it a certain distance and come up way short cause they don't get the lean. If I hit 7 iron 170 it goes 170. Never 190 or 150. Get that dialed in and you are always right near the pin. Keep at it.

I love the loose hidge feeling on the range, I seem to go back to a bowed wrist block with a very late release though on the course. It feels more natural and effortless to have a loose hinge. I can't seems to trust the clubface while playing.
That is because you are thinking distance thoughts when you are playing. Need to go out by yourself. 3 extra balls in your pocket. Swing no more than 50%. Do that and you will be amazed. Then keep doing it.
at a point too, the club during the backswing almost feels weightless. Feels so good ! Not much more is satisfying to me than hitting a golf ball purely !
Wasn't good at practicing the hinge re-hinge motion until I realized you need to feel the weight of the arms/club unit to naturally produce the widest arc and do it effortlessly.
Paul have you ever heard the set to point golf drill. Sean Foley also used on me and my golf. Where the right arm when parallel to the ground in the follow through. The club is also parallel to the ground. This contradicts your re-hinging on the follow through like an l to l drill. Personally I agree with your idea about trying that with a driver . You can’t have two separate swings for irons and woods. Just curious to know what you think. I’ve seen slow mo swings of many pro’s who are as somewhere in between an l to l and set to point ex as more. Great video though cheers
I have not heard of this. The rehinge would occur at eye level in the through swing due to the body tilt in the downswing. If it doesn't rehinge at this point you are holding on tightening your wrists through impact. I know there are some tour pros doing this. They are tour pros. The average person is not. Others can teach what they want. I know the results I have been getting for now 30 years. I like loose wrists. This generates power. If they hinge going back they would re-hinge in the through swing. Not at the same point though because your body tilts in the downswing. Eye level you would have a 90 degree angle between the left arm and club. Anything other than that and its too tight.

I live in a cold climate and going to be a long winter with corona. I bought a used training tool called Impact Snap which is supposed to promote the hinge/forward shaft lean/release you speak of in this video. Thanks. I've seen that before. Just watched the video. I think he holding the angle too long. You need the rehinge after you get to the Y. Not sure if it allows you to do that. Remember you are not holding anything. You are loose so it hinges and rehinges. The tilt gets the lean. If you can loosen your wrists with it then use it. This is vital.
Paul I have a question because I’ve have been hitting the ball a lot of better when really releasing the wrists. But I struggle with the shaft lean. It feels compressed and solid but my club is vertical at impact. My head isn’t that far back so that could be the problem?
Don't worry about shaft lean. Although this tip is about shaft lean I try to get none. Then you hit it straight. Adding the lean is another angle you can never consistently repeat. See these guys hit it 30 yards over a green? I have never done that. My distance control is exact. You start working on more lean I'm telling you that your consistency will suffer. If you are compressing it that is all you need. A chicken wing is obviously not good.
Been watching alot of your videos and its helping. Quick question that popped up in my head. Just got bigger grips put on my new irons cause my hands are bigger and they felt better. But would you think I need some type of a small grip change to compensate?(weaker or stronger)
Only get wider grips if you have bigger hands. The wider the grip the slower the hand action which takes more to square the face. I wouldn't recommend any bigger than midsize only if you have bigger hands. Jumbo would only be for monsters and people with arthritis. So hopefully, you didn't get jumbo grips. If you got midsize and you have larger hands then no change is necessary.
Others pros suggest weight forward & “covering the ball” w iron shots. Seems you recommend hitting w most of your weight on trail leg axis before rotating & shifting weight to front leg? ...thanks for your awesome videos
Yes, they do seem to teach that. The problem is your average person is already doing a reverse pivot when the hit the top. How's that been working out for everyone? Not too good. If you played any sport you would load to the back leg and unload to the forward leg. Golf is a sport. This means we need to do the same thing. We are going to coil and load going back and uncoil with a combine shift coming down. To do this you need to move your head into the backswing. Once loaded we are turning and shifting to uncoil in the downswing with our upper body back behind the ball. This stops it from coming over the top. Hope you understand my description. When I work with students and get them to do this the result is night and day. Stay focused and you will see it too.
Hey Paul! Thanks for the advice. At what point should you unhinge your wrist? I tend to be scooping my shots when i practice the hinge and unhinge method.
If you are scooping you need more body rotation. If the body fires first it moves the widest point (letter Y) past the ball. I am not thinking of unhinging. Loose wrists fire the body it will unhinge on its own. When the arm is parallel to the ground in the downswing it still fully hinged so after that point it will be unhinging.
Thanks Paul but I have a question. If the driver swing and the iron swings are the same, how do you avoid the forward shaft lean with the driver? Is it because we are standing taller with the driver? Thanks for your clear instructions!
Because the ball is more forward and the club is swinging on a flatter plane. You get the lean with any club. It is leaning because the widest point is after the ball is hit but if the club isn't swinging as steep (longer clubs) you are not going to see it leaning at impact. Some pros hit down on the ball even with driver (I think I do too) not that I am trying to do that.
So, Paul, contrary to some other instruction out there, you DO want the head to move some backward? I've always been told to keep it in place, as you can imagine. No side movement, no up-down-up. I get confused. On another subject, I bought the Swing Caddy 300 and am working on your other drills.
Yes, move your head. When you move your head you create your first axis between your head, body and back foot. If you were standing on one leg I would tell you to keep it still. Once you start moving your head you will hit it so much longer and straighter. Just look at the back of the ball going back and as you hit it. Yeah it's FUNNY . I was playing a round with my brother about 5 years ago . He's ALWAYS had the FORWARD SHAFT LEAN and KILLS HIS IRONS AND HIS DRIVER for that matter. He doesn't always hit them RIGHT but when he does they ARE SMOKED !! He's always SET IT like this : the LAST MOVE he makes before taking the club back is to move his hands about two inches in front of the clubhead to create that forward lean you talk about . I know that's EXACTLY what you say NOT TO DO but it works for him , lol !! I've always set the club VERTICALLY - straight UP AND DOWN like you also demonstrated so my iron shots are WEAK compared to his and a lot of other people's I've played with . Well ONE DAY I just got tired of watching him outdrive me by 60 yards so I said to myself , " Next tee I'm going to COPY that lean of his and see what happens . " Well I hit the STRAIGHTEST AND LOWEST driver of my life and although it was a HAIR left and in the rough I thought I'd HIT ON SOMETHING so I tried it again on the next driver hole which was a 400 yard UPHILL [ and I mean a DRAMATICALLY uphill hole ! ] hole . Well I caught EVERY BIT OF IT that time and that ball started on a LOW BULLET-LIKE trajectory on the left side of the fairway and just ROLLED FOREVER !! It ended up RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE GREEN within 40 yards of the hole , lol !! I was in A STATE OF SHOCK [ I mean that ball RAN UP that hill like A SCARED RABBIT , LOL !! ] and my brother didn't say much but I could tell he was thinking " Where the HELL did that come from ?? " It went about 360 yards total with at least 75 of that ON THE GROUND which was more exciting to me then the CARRY distance since I usually get about 5 yards of roll ! I tried it one more time the next hole and it was a GOOD drive but nothing close to the last one so I figured the MAGIC WAS GONE and went back to my NORMAL setup just because it was more comfortable to me . I've basically GIVEN UP trying to hit irons since then because all they do is FRUSTRATE ME - I can NEVER get the impact on the ball I'm looking for so I just use a 3 or 4 hybrid and choke down to hit the shorter shots . The HIGHER angle on the club [ 8,9 wedge etc. ] the WORSE impact I make which I guess is IN LINE with what you teach on this video . You've INSPIRED me though - I'm going to watch this video about 300 MORE TIMES and let it SINK IN and then take it to the course . I used to hit my irons ALMOST as good as my brother 30 years ago but then I STOPPED PLAYING for about 13 years and whether it's GETTING OLDER [ I'll be 59 in March ] or something else I just couldn't hit them as well when I picked up the game again in 2015 . For me the reason I didn’t have shaft lean was a mental problem. I was trying to hit at the ball instead of through it and ignoring the ball. Once I changed intention the mechanics fixed themselves
Something I need to work on..so thanks. Offfhand it seems to me that if I keep my head and body tilted through impact, then I would be more likely to top the ball given my arms are further away from the ground. What tip can you offer for getting body low enough to make solid ball contact ?
I've seen 'lessons' where they say to transfer weight to the left side to start the downswing. Does this also happen by the 'firing your hips' that you are teaching ?
Yes, this would happen without thinking about it because it teach a turn and shift happening at the same time. You wouldn't be able to get to the tip of the back toe without shifting. Now in the nano second you make this move at the top they are trying to teach you to do you don't even have to think about it. Go figure. This is really getting me confused. I always thought with your iron swing, you want to move your weight to your front foot during the backswing and not stay back. You only stay behind the ball for drivers where you hit ‘up’ on it. Please explain to me. Thanks in advance.
Why would you think that. That would be a reverse pivot. Plus, you would then have 2 swings if you did a different swing with your driver. You move your head in a golf swing. Just pick out various pros and watch the background versus their left ear. As they go back you will see their heads move. This allows the weight to load. You do this with irons and woods. The club is lagging to the point where the lead arm is parallel to the ground compressing the the lag angle. From that point to approx. 2 feet after impact with irons and 3 feet with driver the club is releasing. Hey Paul. I noticed something at the 5:49 mark that I never paid attention too until today. Your right arm is still bent at impact. I went to the range today. (Windy day here in California). I practiced with my right arm bent at impact. omg. I was cruising my shots like never before. This stopped my chicken wing, flipping and poor contact. My ball went straight and farther than normal even with the wind in my face.
Yes, the right would be bent because impact is not the widest point of the arc. They don't fully stretch out until after impact. If I keep my club at address in a forward shaft lean before taking backswing, it comes back to same position at impact. Is there any thing wrong by doing this?
Well, you are probably leaning it too much forward. If you do, your grip will be way too strong. Just had a student doing this the other day. He was super inconsistent because you cannot have loose wrists with a strong grip. If so, you hook everything. After you hook a few you lock up to stop it hooking then you push it. So be careful you are not leaning it too far forward. Sure, you can hit some good shots that way but you will have to lock your wrists. Can't see you hitting it very far when you are older if you are all locked up.

If you are not hitting with the arms you will not be casting. So you keep working on loose wrists and using your body. The widest point of the arc is not at impact. It is after impact. If the club hits the widest point at approx 2 feet after impact with irons and 3 feet after with driver the point where the club hits the ball would be the same too. Loosen up the wrists and fire your body. If so the widest point will move ahead of the ball. The widest point is where the club is fully release. Impact there is still and angle. Pretty sure I explained all of this in this tip. No. My hands are already past the ball before I even hit the ball. Yes, the camera did not catch the exact impact. Move the club 3" inches forward and guess what happens to the hands? They move 3" more forward too which would be ahead of the ball.

It depends what you are trying to do. I am not fixed on the ball. I see it as part of the landscape. I know it's there but in no way am I trying to hit it. If you are working on staying behind the ball in the backswing and allowing your had to move going back then pick out a spot on the back of the ball as you go back and watch it as you hit the ball. There is no way you can see this dimple on the back edge of the ball if your head moves forward going back (reverse pivot). I’ll be honest I never comment on RUclips videos. However, I have been playing the game 8 months and learning from mostly RUclips videos. I have struggled with my swing and especially struggling to get 6 and sometimes 7 irons in the air. I have been watching your videos the last few days and today I went on the course and all I can say is WOW. I followed your tips especially around the swing easy (before I was trying to murder the ball) and I hit so many more consistent shots it was unbelievable. I shot bad scores today but not because I kept topping shots or slicing them but because I was striking the ball so much better that it was going a lot longer than what I had down in terms of my yardages. You keep instructions so simple which is a massive help where as a lot of other people just to try complicate the simple things. Easily the best coach on here 👍🏻
Glad you took up golf. That's great. With this game you can literally have a lifetime of fun. Be careful not too follow too many teachers. We all see it differently. So combining methods can lead to serious issues. Choose a teacher and follow them. If it doesn't work then follow another one etc. Glad you tried what I teach and see the results. Killing it is not going to get you anywhere. Loosening up alone will save you a lifetime of frustration. Just keep at it and stay focused. Follow one teacher and work on one or two things. Do that and you will build a great swing.

This is why I always come back to this channel. Whereas dozens of other instructors tell you how to press your hands forward and toe in the club to achieve "shaft lean", you show the movements necessary to get shaft lean without *trying* to get shaft lean.
Exactly. Got to understand "why." If you don't know why ... you don't get it. So you try to physically make it lean. I have never worked on this one day in my life yet I have it. Just keep working on the fundamentals. People are always out there trying to create confusion. Simple is the key.

That's great. I love working with guys like you because you already know how to use your body. The break then getting back into it got you hitting with the arms. This is due to human nature which I reference in my body swing book and videos. Stay focused. Keep the arms completely turned off and power it with you body.
Wow - another great simple explanation of the forward shaft lean to hit compressed iron shots! What I am hearing you say and demonstrate on the video is that if I use the fundamentals of the Body Swing, I don't need to fill my head with angles, etc. to get a forward shaft lean; instead, my body swing will already take that into account and I will be hitting with a forward shaft lean. Brilliant! So many other instructors out there on RUclips teaching "how to cover the ball" by bending the knees during the downswing so the forward shaft lean will occur - seems to me that would be very difficult to do and keep track of. They need to take a lesson from you on how to explain these topics to folks in a manner that is easy to understand and already taken care of in your Body Swing!
Yes. Too many people working on stuff they shouldn't. Get the shape of the swing by doing the positions I teach and you will get this. Do not rush through them. You need to do them precisely and daily in a mirror. I just always wanted the most change in the fewest moves. Even though I make it super simple people sorta kinda do the positions. Stay focused. If you see the 4 moves that I teach in pros swings then would you not look like a pro if you did them? You sure would.

Very good. To many people try to get you to purposely lean it. That will never work because even if you do you will be manipulating the face. Just get the fundamentals. Did any of the old greats ever work on this? They didn't even have cameras fast enough to see impact.

This video was a eureka moment for me. The notion that the club center on the body at address is replicated about a foot or so post impact has totally transformed my game and produces shaft lean without any effort at all.
Following Paulsr.body swing tips and as a 73 old having lost distance off tee have started to hit straighter and gained 25=30yds off the tee.Must learn to get rid of the "arm" action ingrained over the years

Thanks so much. I just try to keep it simple. It's really about knowing your student and giving them pieces that the can understand and actually do especially when the great majority only practice once a week. I just need people to understand it and try it (for more than 3 balls) and get the result. If they see they can do it and it makes a huge difference then maybe they will keep doing it so they take their swing to a new level. Too many people making this way to complicated.

This is a fantastic video. There are many instructors around at the moment teaching people to turn their left wrist down and hold it that way through impact and I see them and think "am I missing something here?" Wouldn't that mean your wrists would be rigid through the downswing? Another great lesson, thanks Paul.
Yeah, I've seen it all. What they are forgetting that if the face is open or closed only a few degrees at impact you will hit it sideways. A tick on a clock is 6 degrees. You don't have 6 degrees. So how is someone practicing once a week ever going be consistent turning their knuckles down. Good luck. I do this in my swing. Have I ever thought of doing it. NO. Get the fundamentals and this stuff happens on it's own.
Wow, I never realized I had a lean to my swing! Thanks Paul, my friends are telling me I’ve slowed down my swing (I haven’t) and that I’m hitting the ball so much straighter (neutral grip) than before with my strong grip that used to snap hook.
Well at least you are hitting it straighter. To slow down your swing you need to switch the power source from arms to legs. I am putting a lot of effort into it it's just not with my arms. Work on this tip and see if you can switch into the future. I am trying to build you a swing for life. Imagine when you are older. Swinging hard is not going to work.

The y-shape is very interesting and easy to understand. I have been trying to learn how to de-loft my irons, and thought forcing shaft lean was the answer. This seems like a less restrictive method and I will definitely be trying it out. Thank you
As you have just found out, trying to get the lean is not the answer and not necessary. The lean is due to the tilt. I have the lean and I have never worked on shaft lean. This term wasn't even around when I was a kid. You know who else has it? Every pro and better player from the past too. So without having this term and even thinking about it yet better players having it there has to be a reason it occurs. Also, purposely trying to do that leads to manipulating the clubface. If you are open or close just a few degrees you will hit it everywhere. So keep trying to hinge and rehinge loosening up your wrists. That is the arm unit. Then you have your body coiling and uncoiling. That is what hit the ball not the arms. Turn them off completely and you will hit it dead straight and pure.

Glad you found me. I literally just shot a tip on it yesterday. Each club is 4 degree difference. A tick on a clock is 6 degrees. At the Taylor factory years ago the guy said tour players on average deloft it 6 degrees. This is one tick on a clock which is 1.5 clubs less. Now think about trying to hold this angle more. Lets say you do 2 ticks on a clock. 12 degrees. 3 clubs stronger. At some point you will have so little loft on your club you will have trouble getting it airborne. Plus, the thing they don't tell you is that you will have terrible distance control. Don't hold that much angle you hit it short. Hold more and you hit it long. So you end up driving yourself crazy because you never hit the ball the right distance. Finally, when you hold the angle to long the mass never gets to its widest point. If we are using simple physics of mass swinging around an axis you need mass to get to its widest point which is just after the ball is hit. So you hold the angle you never get to this point. Thanks for watching. I just do and say things differently. My students come from all over the world. They are only here for a few hours. In that time, I need them to hit it better than they ever have in their lives. Plus, I need to teach them how to fix their own swing. So I am always thinking fast and easy. Have thought this way since lesson 1 back in 1991.
That is fascinating because when I was being taught or learning the sport I never had to think about forward shaft lean because I was releasing the club through proper fundamentals.. those players that weren’t getting it we’re trying to hold onto the club to keep their hands forward and the club never released.. Paul you have expressed many times the golf swing is incredibly natural if you learn certain fundamentals and then just let the club swing..Cool..
Thanks so much. That holding it off is tricky. How do you square the face each time within a few degrees. This too effects your distance control. Lean too much and hit it long. I can't even remember a time I ever hit a ball over a green when I was hitting my club for my yardage yet you see these tour player do it all the time.
@@paulwilsongolf They did a study years ago it was a dynamic impact study where unbelievably they measured the tour players degree of loft at contact and they were all about 4° less than the standard loft of the golf club.. I didn’t believe it but it is true
I was at the TaylorMade factory years ago and the guy behind the computer and video equipment said on average they are 6 degrees defloted. So yes, I totally believe it.
@@paulwilsongolf and you were spot on there’s no way that you can square the club face within two or 3° when you’re swinging the club at 100 miles an hour there has to be something in your swing that allows the club to do it itself.. and by the way the two axes proposition is superb.. I haven’t heard any teaching professional really get into that with any simplified presentation..
@@paulwilsongolf Yup and there’s no way that they can be that consistent all of them without doing the same thing so therefore wouldn’t it have to be natural physiology that produces that consistency I think so.. and your methods produce the consistent methodology if you will to produce positive results you can’t manipulate the golf club I don’t care who you are.. you could be the greatest athlete of all time and see the ball coming off the club face and you ain’t gonna produce the consistency.. you could take the latest iron Byron whatever that is and program into it an algorithm that allows it to think for itself and it would screw up..

Exactly. You have to understand it first so you see its importance. Then you gradually start adding it to your swing. Takes time to change but if you know "why" you will keep doing it until perfected.

Yes, you would be a perfect student but everyone who comes to me like this so I have a lot of perfect students. It is just so easy to try to hit with the arms. See it differently, understand it then get used to the new feelings associated with it. It takes a little time and work but anyone can do this.

Another Great video Paul. This would be a good drill for the long winter months coming up. What other drills would you recommend to practice during the winter?
Yes, do this for sure. The winter is the best time to practice your swing. You are not hitting balls so you have no distractions. Once the season starts you are ready to play great golf instead of building the swing over the summer. You need to work on your grip and setup so you don't lose the positioning. Then the wrist hinge and rehinge to get it loose. Then firing the lower body so you get good at it.
My irons were a mess; fat, thin, low trajectory, etc. Found your tips 3 weeks ago. Already greatly improved and confidence returning. Hdcp Index dropped from 7 to 4 in 3 weeks (used to be a 4).Thank you Paul, youre a great teacher! Question: I developed shanks with short wedge shots. I'm thinking my hips are getting too far ahead of the ball on the downswing. Tried your tip about not "falling" toward the ball but didnt help. Suggestion?
Wow, that's great. Thank you for the support. As for the shanks yes you could be firing the lower too hard. Are you sure it's a shank and not bladed? I would roll the wrists purposely a bunch of times just up in the air. This will unlock the wrists. Then try again:

Paul thanks for all your great tips. They’ve really helped with my driver but I’m still hitting my irons about 1 to 1.5 clubs shorter than my old swing, nice a straight just short. I know I have a tendency to not swing through on my irons and I’m concentrating on hinging the wrists etc. Still have trouble consistently compressing the irons
That is probably because you were delofting those clubs so you were getting a mis-read on your actual distance. No compression says there is still some arms in this swing too. Keep working on the hinge/rehinge. Get the angles sharper with more lag and loose wrists. Then start firing the lower body harder for more power. Use the ground.

Hi Paul I have to admit I started looking at your videos quite a while a go then got swallowed up in the sea of other videos that can be found on YT! I have been playing well lately but after my last round I come away thinking wow, my swing actually feels really hard to execute at the moment and lacking the consistency that I "occasionally" get. I remembered your videos and over the last week or so have been watching them and even comparing what you say against slow-mo videos (thanks to @MichaelJohnField) of the pros and you know what....you make a lot of sense! haha who'd of thought!
Anyway I have just got back from my second range sessions implementing your teachings into my swing and yup..more proof that what you are teaching here makes complete sense. As I said I have been playing pretty well lately but honestly my ball striking felt on another level today and so effortless! This video in particular has been a great help as I was on of those that held on to my wrist angles to create shaft lean. Light bulb moment in this video particularly when you mentioned moving your head over your trail foot and keeping it there (ruclips.net/video/RM4OX3m2-90/видео.html) whilst you swing through to release. Ahh the RUclips rabbit hole. Not fun when you get in there. Glad you decided to crawl out and you see the power in what I am teaching. Simple yet highly effective. Yeah that shaft lean is killing a lot of swings. 1 club is 4 degrees. 1 tick on a clock is 6 degrees. Every tick on a clock leaning forward is 1.5 clubs. So when people are pulling the handle 2 ticks it's 3 clubs. Sure you hit the irons long but now you run into trajectory issues as well as distance control issues. Plus an average player is never going to get long irons airborne. Funny how people see things in slow motion then try to work specifically on them instead of thinking that maybe that thing is happening by doing something else. As you see in the lean video I am not trying to lean it. It leans due to the right fundamentals. You certainly don't want too much lean. Thanks for mentioning that channel. This is exactly what I have been looking for. Perfect videos. Stay focused and make it simple.

Glad you see it. I probably haven't hit an approach shots 20-30 yards past the pin in 40 years. This is what these guys are doing. They are getting too much lean. They are pumped up and blow it way too long. Or they think they are going to hit it a certain distance and come up way short cause they don't get the lean. If I hit 7 iron 170 it goes 170. Never 190 or 150. Get that dialed in and you are always right near the pin. Keep at it.

I love the loose hidge feeling on the range, I seem to go back to a bowed wrist block with a very late release though on the course. It feels more natural and effortless to have a loose hinge. I can't seems to trust the clubface while playing.
That is because you are thinking distance thoughts when you are playing. Need to go out by yourself. 3 extra balls in your pocket. Swing no more than 50%. Do that and you will be amazed. Then keep doing it.
at a point too, the club during the backswing almost feels weightless. Feels so good ! Not much more is satisfying to me than hitting a golf ball purely !

Wasn't good at practicing the hinge re-hinge motion until I realized you need to feel the weight of the arms/club unit to naturally produce the widest arc and do it effortlessly.

Paul have you ever heard the set to point golf drill. Sean Foley also used on me and my golf. Where the right arm when parallel to the ground in the follow through. The club is also parallel to the ground. This contradicts your re-hinging on the follow through like an l to l drill. Personally I agree with your idea about trying that with a driver . You can’t have two separate swings for irons and woods. Just curious to know what you think. I’ve seen slow mo swings of many pro’s who are as somewhere in between an l to l and set to point ex as more. Great video though cheers
I have not heard of this. The rehinge would occur at eye level in the through swing due to the body tilt in the downswing. If it doesn't rehinge at this point you are holding on tightening your wrists through impact. I know there are some tour pros doing this. They are tour pros. The average person is not. Others can teach what they want. I know the results I have been getting for now 30 years. I like loose wrists. This generates power. If they hinge going back they would re-hinge in the through swing. Not at the same point though because your body tilts in the downswing. Eye level you would have a 90 degree angle between the left arm and club. Anything other than that and its too tight.

Thanks. I've seen that before. Just watched the video. I think he holding the angle too long. You need the rehinge after you get to the Y. Not sure if it allows you to do that. Remember you are not holding anything. You are loose so it hinges and rehinges. The tilt gets the lean. If you can loosen your wrists with it then use it. This is vital.

Paul I have a question because I’ve have been hitting the ball a lot of better when really releasing the wrists. But I struggle with the shaft lean. It feels compressed and solid but my club is vertical at impact. My head isn’t that far back so that could be the problem?
Don't worry about shaft lean. Although this tip is about shaft lean I try to get none. Then you hit it straight. Adding the lean is another angle you can never consistently repeat. See these guys hit it 30 yards over a green? I have never done that. My distance control is exact. You start working on more lean I'm telling you that your consistency will suffer. If you are compressing it that is all you need. A chicken wing is obviously not good.

Been watching alot of your videos and its helping. Quick question that popped up in my head. Just got bigger grips put on my new irons cause my hands are bigger and they felt better. But would you think I need some type of a small grip change to compensate?(weaker or stronger)
Only get wider grips if you have bigger hands. The wider the grip the slower the hand action which takes more to square the face. I wouldn't recommend any bigger than midsize only if you have bigger hands. Jumbo would only be for monsters and people with arthritis. So hopefully, you didn't get jumbo grips. If you got midsize and you have larger hands then no change is necessary.
Others pros suggest weight forward & “covering the ball” w iron shots. Seems you recommend hitting w most of your weight on trail leg axis before rotating & shifting weight to front leg? ...thanks for your awesome videos
Yes, they do seem to teach that. The problem is your average person is already doing a reverse pivot when the hit the top. How's that been working out for everyone? Not too good. If you played any sport you would load to the back leg and unload to the forward leg. Golf is a sport. This means we need to do the same thing. We are going to coil and load going back and uncoil with a combine shift coming down. To do this you need to move your head into the backswing. Once loaded we are turning and shifting to uncoil in the downswing with our upper body back behind the ball. This stops it from coming over the top. Hope you understand my description. When I work with students and get them to do this the result is night and day. Stay focused and you will see it too.

Hey Paul! Thanks for the advice. At what point should you unhinge your wrist? I tend to be scooping my shots when i practice the hinge and unhinge method.
If you are scooping you need more body rotation. If the body fires first it moves the widest point (letter Y) past the ball. I am not thinking of unhinging. Loose wrists fire the body it will unhinge on its own. When the arm is parallel to the ground in the downswing it still fully hinged so after that point it will be unhinging.

Because the ball is more forward and the club is swinging on a flatter plane. You get the lean with any club. It is leaning because the widest point is after the ball is hit but if the club isn't swinging as steep (longer clubs) you are not going to see it leaning at impact. Some pros hit down on the ball even with driver (I think I do too) not that I am trying to do that.

So, Paul, contrary to some other instruction out there, you DO want the head to move some backward? I've always been told to keep it in place, as you can imagine. No side movement, no up-down-up. I get confused. On another subject, I bought the Swing Caddy 300 and am working on your other drills.
Yes, move your head. When you move your head you create your first axis between your head, body and back foot. If you were standing on one leg I would tell you to keep it still. Once you start moving your head you will hit it so much longer and straighter. Just look at the back of the ball going back and as you hit it. Yeah it's FUNNY . I was playing a round with my brother about 5 years ago . He's ALWAYS had the FORWARD SHAFT LEAN and KILLS HIS IRONS AND HIS DRIVER for that matter. He doesn't always hit them RIGHT but when he does they ARE SMOKED !! He's always SET IT like this : the LAST MOVE he makes before taking the club back is to move his hands about two inches in front of the clubhead to create that forward lean you talk about . I know that's EXACTLY what you say NOT TO DO but it works for him , lol !! I've always set the club VERTICALLY - straight UP AND DOWN like you also demonstrated so my iron shots are WEAK compared to his and a lot of other people's I've played with . Well ONE DAY I just got tired of watching him outdrive me by 60 yards so I said to myself , " Next tee I'm going to COPY that lean of his and see what happens . " Well I hit the STRAIGHTEST AND LOWEST driver of my life and although it was a HAIR left and in the rough I thought I'd HIT ON SOMETHING so I tried it again on the next driver hole which was a 400 yard UPHILL [ and I mean a DRAMATICALLY uphill hole ! ] hole . Well I caught EVERY BIT OF IT that time and that ball started on a LOW BULLET-LIKE trajectory on the left side of the fairway and just ROLLED FOREVER !! It ended up RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE GREEN within 40 yards of the hole , lol !! I was in A STATE OF SHOCK [ I mean that ball RAN UP that hill like A SCARED RABBIT , LOL !! ] and my brother didn't say much but I could tell he was thinking " Where the HELL did that come from ?? " It went about 360 yards total with at least 75 of that ON THE GROUND which was more exciting to me then the CARRY distance since I usually get about 5 yards of roll ! I tried it one more time the next hole and it was a GOOD drive but nothing close to the last one so I figured the MAGIC WAS GONE and went back to my NORMAL setup just because it was more comfortable to me . I've basically GIVEN UP trying to hit irons since then because all they do is FRUSTRATE ME - I can NEVER get the impact on the ball I'm looking for so I just use a 3 or 4 hybrid and choke down to hit the shorter shots . The HIGHER angle on the club [ 8,9 wedge etc. ] the WORSE impact I make which I guess is IN LINE with what you teach on this video . You've INSPIRED me though - I'm going to watch this video about 300 MORE TIMES and let it SINK IN and then take it to the course . I used to hit my irons ALMOST as good as my brother 30 years ago but then I STOPPED PLAYING for about 13 years and whether it's GETTING OLDER [ I'll be 59 in March ] or something else I just couldn't hit them as well when I picked up the game again in 2015 . Anyway , THANKS for the video - now let's see if I CAN MAKE IT WORK !!

For me the reason I didn’t have shaft lean was a mental problem. I was trying to hit at the ball instead of through it and ignoring the ball. Once I changed intention the mechanics fixed themselves

Something I need to work on..so thanks. Offfhand it seems to me that if I keep my head and body tilted through impact, then I would be more likely to top the ball given my arms are further away from the ground. What tip can you offer for getting body low enough to make solid ball contact ?
You are not going to top it from staying behind it unless you buckle your arms. The tilt creates the descending blow.

I've seen 'lessons' where they say to transfer weight to the left side to start the downswing. Does this also happen by the 'firing your hips' that you are teaching ?
Yes, this would happen without thinking about it because it teach a turn and shift happening at the same time. You wouldn't be able to get to the tip of the back toe without shifting. Now in the nano second you make this move at the top they are trying to teach you to do you don't even have to think about it. Go figure. Maybe watch this one:

This is really getting me confused. I always thought with your iron swing, you want to move your weight to your front foot during the backswing and not stay back. You only stay behind the ball for drivers where you hit ‘up’ on it. Please explain to me. Thanks in advance.
Why would you think that. That would be a reverse pivot. Plus, you would then have 2 swings if you did a different swing with your driver. You move your head in a golf swing. Just pick out various pros and watch the background versus their left ear. As they go back you will see their heads move. This allows the weight to load. You do this with irons and woods. Please watch more of my tips to understand it more.

Where does the release of the golf swing happen..is it before contact or after contact with the ball..

Hey Paul. I noticed something at the 5:49 mark that I never paid attention too until today. Your right arm is still bent at impact. I went to the range today. (Windy day here in California). I practiced with my right arm bent at impact. omg. I was cruising my shots like never before. This stopped my chicken wing, flipping and poor contact. My ball went straight and farther than normal even with the wind in my face.
Yes, the right would be bent because impact is not the widest point of the arc. They don't fully stretch out until after impact. I talk about it in these tips:

If I keep my club at address in a forward shaft lean before taking backswing, it comes back to same position at impact. Is there any thing wrong by doing this?
Well, you are probably leaning it too much forward. If you do, your grip will be way too strong. Just had a student doing this the other day. He was super inconsistent because you cannot have loose wrists with a strong grip. If so, you hook everything. After you hook a few you lock up to stop it hooking then you push it. So be careful you are not leaning it too far forward. Sure, you can hit some good shots that way but you will have to lock your wrists. Can't see you hitting it very far when you are older if you are all locked up.

how do you get forward shaft lean and release the wrist if the release needs to come just before the golf ball strike
The widest point of the arc is not at impact. It is after impact. If the club hits the widest point at approx 2 feet after impact with irons and 3 feet after with driver the point where the club hits the ball would be the same too. Loosen up the wrists and fire your body. If so the widest point will move ahead of the ball. The widest point is where the club is fully release. Impact there is still and angle. Pretty sure I explained all of this in this tip. Here are others:

It looks like with irons your head does not stay behind the ball...I mean at impact! Am I right?
No. My hands are already past the ball before I even hit the ball. Yes, the camera did not catch the exact impact. Move the club 3" inches forward and guess what happens to the hands? They move 3" more forward too which would be ahead of the ball.

If you are working on staying behind the ball in the backswing and allowing your had to move going back then pick out a spot on the back of the ball as you go back and watch it as you hit the ball. There is no way you can see this dimple on the back edge of the ball if your head moves forward going back (reverse pivot). No because the club is descending. Think of the oval of the swing. Where the ball is it is not the low point. The club is still descending at contact.

The other important factor for forward shaft lean is that the hips are 35-45% open to the target at impact. All pros and better players do this.
Yes that would also happen. You get the tilt by firing the lower causing rotation and tilt.

I got a lesson from a guy telling me to address the ball with a forward shaft lean before even taking a backswing… is that incorrect?
I like the hands even with the ball not ahead of the ball at set up. The more you put them ahead the stronger your grip will be.
