Immortal is kinda unique among the black metal bands of that time because Abbath (On this album, did vocals, guitar, bass, composer) never took himself too seriously and has more of a lighthearted kitschy approach to the whole "evil black metal" theme. It's really refreshing because as much as I love black metal, it's honestly pretty silly and some people take it way too seriously lol.
Holy crap, you're in for a treat. At the Heart of Winter is my favourite Immortal. Withstand the Fall of Time has some of the most insane riffing. The chorus riff especially, is timeless. Seen 'em live in Sydney, as well as Abbath/I.
I can't believe that song wasn't on the list. It's the song that defines Immortal to me. Blashyrkh and One by One wouldve also been on the listening list for me too.
Finally made the journey to Norwegian Black metal, you've come a long way since Cannibal Corpse. Don't forget to stop by and listen to Venom and Bathory(first wave) and Burzum and Mayhem(second wave).
"At the Heart of Winter" is the best rated album from Immortal which is their 5. album. Just have a good debate about "when are the best albums from a band". Personally I almost love the 2-3 first albums. Immortal is if we talk as from the world of poker : Sitting with a really nice hand. They manage to create a fantastic vibe from the northerrn sky ! Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism is still the best :)
If you want to know more about the early 90's norwegian scene you can always watch several documentaries: Until the Light Takes Us (2008); Satan Rides the Media (1998); Once upon a Time in Norway (2007); Pure Fucking Mayhem (2008); Det Svarte Alvor (1994) and Helvete: historien om norsk black metal (2020).
At the Heart of Winter is one of the few albums I have listened to more than once yearly since 1999. There is also excellent live material from Wacken. Hard to believe that three guys can produce such an intricate sound. Liked and subbed!
So pumped you listened to the band, but a small suggestion if I may: This is one of the best full albums I've ever heard, and in a way it's almost a concept album. Definitely one that should be listened to in it's entirety, and in order. Couple of musical moments in there that will almost make you cry, they are that beautiful. At The Heart Of Winter shall live on in our immortal hearts ;-)
If you enjoyed the drums so you should also listen to the amazing Swedish band called Hypocrisy... the drummer Reidar "Horgh" Horghagen played with them for 18 years.
Beyond The North Waves is basically an hommage to Quorthon from Bathory, inventor of viking metal. And Abbath used to do bass and vocals in Immortal, until guitarist Demonaz got tendonitis and couldn't play anymore. But Demonaz continued to write the band's lyrics as he'd always done. Abbath was kicked out of Immortal partly for being an alcoholic and partly for financial/business reasons some years ago, and everyone said there could be no Immortal without Abbath, but Demonaz and Horgh proved them all wrong with an absolute blinder of a record, while Abbath's solo stuff is kind of in one ear and out the other.
What I always appreciated about Immortal was their melodies and how they aren’t trying to be tvue kvlt or whatever. You can tell they’re having loads of fun Also always loved how Abbath owns his vocal style. It’s hardly even a scream, it’s just spooky man being spooky. Similar to Shagrath from Dimmu Borgir. They don’t need to push their vocals beyond spoken a lot of the time. No wonder both sound as clean as they do 20+ years on
What about Pure Holocaust is fun to you? Abbath became a clown when they sold out, and that is how the nowadays black metal fans revise the history of black metal.
Battles In The North (1994) is the foundation of their "concept" a fictitious place called "Blashyrkh". Watch "Lord's Of Chaos" to come to terms with Mayhem as the foundation of early Black Metal.
Thank you for reacting to Immortal! Great classic black metal band! :) A word on the history and line-ups of Immortal. Demonaz and Abbath started the band and originally Demonaz played guitar (on their 3-4 first albums) and Abbath played bass, sang and also did some drums on this period. Demonaz had to quit playing guitar due to a disease or injure (I don't remember) which meant that Abbath took over guitar duties and bass was handled by various persons through the years. In the 2000s (I don't remember the exact years, sorry!) Demonaz came back to Immortal because he could now play again. Abbath however didn't do so well in the personal department. Alcoholism and so on and he was sacked from the band because he was difficult to work with. Abbath started "Abbath" and Demonaz kept going with Immortal where he now sings and play guitar. Latest album "Northern chaos gods" is quite good. New album early 2023. Looking forward to that! Cheers! :)

Someone who recommended to Where Dark & Light Don't Differ as the first song is God. Best track ever. I recommend also The Darkness that Embrace me; /and/ My Dimension from the next album.
Their frontman Abbath is my guitar hero. I only own the “At The Heart Of Winter” and “Sons Of Northern Darkness” albums….but what that guy does on guitar on top of doing vocals is just truely amazing. That takes talent. They’re definitely the best at this “type” of black metal. Normally one thinks of those bands that are truly satanic, burn churches, Christianity must die, and they mean it….Immortal tries to transplant you back to a time of Norse Mythology and when the Vikings roamed that area and pillaged, plundered, and conquered undiscovered lands to them once they new how to navigate direction of the seas. They do a great job of that. Made me think that not all black metal is truely satanic.
Blizzard Beasts is raw and crude, delicious fury. Also recommend Hypocrisy. Pick songs from their Ten years of chaos and confusion compilation. It's brutally great

Never heard of this band, I’ve gotta assume it’s brutal. Will my ears bleed? Hope not. I do know that when you finally get to Avenged Sevenfold we won’t have to worry about that
oh man... early music together with the videos would have been way funnier... call of the winter moon or blizzard beasts or the famous crab stance in a song like all shall fall for example..
Separate politics from music I only care about the art I don’t care about varg Nordic beliefs he’s an amazing artist and idc that euronymous was a communist honestly I only care if they rock which they both did!!
I mean, Horgh, who plays drums on the first song. Is among the greats of Scandinavian drummers. Same goes for Hellhammer who did some consert work for immortal. Immortal has always had killer drum work
Ahhhh like your channel just tighten up your mic, so simple just talk closer to it tone down the tac on the back and bring up the tone just so it doesn't sound so hollow and low end sorry not trhibf to be ruse just generally trying to help
Yep :) Already got my new mic, I just have to set it up and make sure everything works with my camera. Thank you for the feedback though! Slowly but surely improving the tech of the channel as I go lol.
That guy was talking out his ass lol varg was in mayhem briefly Euronymous and a few others were trying to make it completely satanic and evil pushed to Dead his lead singer to suicide. Everyone was out for blood. Varg killed him first over money. Euronymous took pictures of dead corpse and used it on an album cover and started burning churches. There is a problem with Nazis in black metal. Necrobutcher runs Mayhem and he's a very cool dude and they've never none anything like that since. Gorgoroth as far as I know as an actual satanic band who puts goat heads on pikes at shows as far as them being Nazis IDK. Also early black metal was so badly produced because they did not have studios and at home recordings were too expensive and they didn't really know how to do it.

I guess that's a good starter for Immortal. The production isn't that bad and you're not getting the wall of noise from the endless blast beats.
The wall of noise approach on Battles In The North is my fave. I love that album so much! It's the musical equivalent of a blizzard haha
At the Heart of Winter has some other great tracks. also check out Battles in the North
Norway !!
React to the Finnish pagan metal band Moonsorrow. You gonna love it.
Varg and Burzum are worth listening to
Damned in black and sons of northern darkness
Diabolic Fullmoon Mysticism album is true Black Metal
If you want some great black metal check out Windir!
And Vreid
My favorite song is all shall fall
Amon amatth+iron maiden+ol time dimmu borgir+kiss 😎🤣
I recommend you give Evergrey a listen 👌
please more Immortal, against the tide , whithstand the fall of time
Oh hells yesh
Dark Tranquillity deep dive 8 sonhs
i had all immortal albums. loved all except At The Heart of Winter. you should have reacted to the 1st or 2nd album or even 3rd album to get the real feel of Blashyrkh. do yourself a favour get their 1st 3 albums you wont regret it.
What a nice trolling
Check out new Immortal song "Wargod"
🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Never heard of this band, I’ve gotta assume it’s brutal. Will my ears bleed? Hope not. I do know that when you finally get to Avenged Sevenfold we won’t have to worry about that
oh man... early music together with the videos would have been way funnier... call of the winter moon or blizzard beasts or the famous crab stance in a song like all shall fall for example..
withstand the fall of time is missing
Hahahahahaaaaa i think i would marry her ! 😍😂
Blizzard Beasts
Separate politics from music I only care about the art I don’t care about varg Nordic beliefs he’s an amazing artist and idc that euronymous was a communist honestly I only care if they rock which they both did!!
Yes nice 👌 enjoy ...BLACKMETAL...
Do a Bathory review. I beg of you
You almost kvlt grimmaced 😅
great choice of musics but there is better ones to chose ro give a even better opinion.
Hi pls react to Twisted Sister - The Price (Cover by Tommy Johansson) 🙂
Hi is guitarist in sabaton 🙂
As much as I lije immortal I have to say mgla is just as good if not better.
WTF! why not have listened to the best songs of the group or those which made them popular?
Blashyyrk, Withstand the fall of time, etc...
I mean, Horgh, who plays drums on the first song. Is among the greats of Scandinavian drummers. Same goes for Hellhammer who did some consert work for immortal. Immortal has always had killer drum work
Thank you for the video on Immortal but choice of songs not that great apart from the first one .. Still great effort ! :)
react to BATHORY - BLOOD ON ICE
Do vektor please
Also early black metal was so badly produced because they did not have studios and at home recordings were too expensive and they didn't really know how to do it.
let's give immortal some love
They call their style DARK HOLOCAUST METAL
