Shisui was also nicknamed the teleporter but before we actually saw what that looked like, the only teleporter we'd seen onscreen was Tobi which likely gave further credence to the theory.
Biggest problem with shisui was his age, shisui was only like 6-7 years old during the nine tails attacks, meaning it would be impossible for tobi to be shisui.

It all depends on how the author writes it, like for example The Masked Man that fought Minato could've been an aged up Madara using a Zetsu body, but later passes the mantle and identity onto a younger successor, but in this case it's Shisui rather than Obito for whatever reason. No one said that it HAD to be the same Masked Man in all of their appearances. Comic book writers pull that stunt a lot.

We’re on the episode where Naruto goes to talk to Nagato (the real pain) .
I always wanted Tobi to be Izuna, and he would have been acting against Madaras secret real plans, and eventually Madara would come back and have to deal with the mental trauma, as well as a direct foil for his long and well laid out plans, which would have had to necessitate them to be different than the eye of the moon plan, since that would be Izunas answer to whatever Madara would have wanted.

My favorite theory is that Tobi is Taiyuchi, the ramen guy. Obviously complete nonsense, even back then, but it's funny to think about and there are actually some things in favor of this theory: -He was the first person to be nice to Naruto, even before Iruka (which is kinda strange considering that the ENTIRE village shunned the kid). He made sure that Naruto would see him often and trust him. -We never see his eyes, they are always closed (or, well, not REALLY closed, but he always squints so they appear closed. Important is that we never see the iris) -In the Uchiha clan photo there is a guy left to Mikoto who looks a lot like him (also squinting) -In a flashback where we see 12-year-old Minato with his sensei Jiraiya, we also see his two teammates; one of which looks - again - a lot like a child Taiyuchi (and is, again, squinting)

Well, in the end Naruto didn't really change the system that's responsible for most problems in the story so the future Sasuke theory wouldn't be so farfetched.
2 things 1. Sasuke stopping Naruto from being hokage could be an interesting premise without it betraying naruto's character. I see it like Naruto could be an dictator of sorts but it's an reverse of what you might think. He enforces a peace policy to a tee that an power imbalance between Naruto and the village and it's what cause naruto's downfall as a hokage. Which is why Sasuke tries incredibly hard here to stop Naruto in the past from reaching that goal. 2. The only theory here i heard before the reveal was izuna being Tobi which captivated me considering beforehand I never heard izuna in anything and never knew what his backstory was until way later.
It would’ve been cool if in the future Sasuke killed Naruto but encountered the Otsusuki’s by himself and they ravaged the world, stole Sasuke’s eye and sent him back in time somehow similarly to how Sasuke and Boruto got sent back in time in that filler episode. Then Sasuke took on the Tobi persona to gather the tailed beasts and the Infinite Tsukuyomi was actually needed to get him back to the future to get his left eye back and to get revenge.
Great video. I was there and saw a lot of those theories, good times man. My favorite was future evil Naruto. In a way that maintained since Óbito is basically Naruto gone wrong.
I think the future sasuke theory came from naruto storm generations when madara literally reversed time and people probably assumed that sasuke somehow got that ability, generations came out months before the obito reveal so it makes sense.
We need a timeline, where after witnessing Boruto events unfolding, Sasuke goes back in time, slays Tobi and takes his identity to guide the shinobi history for centuries to come.

I used to think it was shishui. But I’ll say it again, the whole ‘who is Tobi’ was a masterful plot device from kishimoto. That’s all ANYONE talked abt back in the day from what i remember
Izuna being Tobi would've been possible. He had the MS like Madara and was about as powerful, not to mention I see no reason he wouldn't have access to Izanagi. He would of course know the history of Madara and Hashirama and the alias "Tobi" makes just as much sense here as it goes with Obito, since Tobirama was his rival. Izuna's long lifespan could easily be attributed to either the gedo statue or Zestu, with Pain being used to bring Madara back alongside him. Dreams of a far future indeed!
That's cope. Even if he had been disfigured to such an extent it still would've made a lot more sense for that to be revealed much earlier instead of halfway through the final arc.
The problem with the face reveal gimmick is that it pretty much requires to surprise the surrounding characters as well as the readers to work, otherwise there would be no point for a character hiding their face. At the moment Kakashi started to face Tobi, any unmasking sequence made his identity obvious. But if Tobi were anybody else the story would probably not have let Kakashi's team unmask Tobi, and have someone more relevant involved. So I don't think the Shisui option would have been rubbish, could have just found a way to make Edo-Itachi face him for example. Let's say Shisui's plan was to cast a more powerful Kotoamatsukami on the whole world to stop wars, sounds believable. Also, Tobi didn't even have to be specifically an Uchiha, could have gotten a Sharingan like Kakashi or Danzo. Could have even been some artificial humanoid creature like the Zetsus, that's what some people assumed after seeing his injuried arms turn into goo.
I mean. We can change the whole "Naruto becomes evil" to "Somebody takes advantage of Naruto's naïveness and takes over the most powerful Kage in the world, crumbling the new ninja society." Somebody like one of the martians, because of course Kishi wants them FOREVER.

Time travel sasuke is silly. Going back in time to stop naruto, but decides to do the attack on the leaf that gets the 9 tails sealed into naruto in the first place. If he was the masked man, he would be a lot stronger than naruto if naruto didn't have the beast.
Personally, I've always thought it was Obito, because just like the reveal that Yondaime was Naruto's dad, it was really obvious from the get go; and I think it works well as a villain because Obito is kind of a foil to Naruto, an underdog with a very similar life experience of underestimation, failure, being overshadowed by a team mate, love triangle bs, etc. However, I think there's an universe out there where the reveal is Izuna and the war arc happens completely differently. Izuna is a great foil for Sasuke the same way Obito is for Naruto. He watches his brother being historically villifyied if he doesn't die, he'd be the one other survivor of the massacre with severe brotherly issues, and his plan could boil down to "Okay, it's either an Uchiha's Konoha now, or vengeance" and when he fails, he revives Madara proper. Sasuke fresh out of his trauma of learning the truth having to face an enemy that could be his equal in a lot of his motivations would be huge. Orochimaru, Danzo and Itachi gave him trouble, but they don't really challenge his morality or world views at the point they happen. The run to get stronger for vengeance only to have their vengeance be in vain because Madara and Itachi are fundamentally different characters having different goals could have been such a huge development.
To me, Tobi was always obviously Obito. It took me until real Madara showed up for real for me to refer to this guy as Madara, in order to keep his identity a secret for my brother who was behind
I've played the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm games ever since I was a kid, with my older brother. So I've kinda known everything although I'm watching the anime for the first time now, to really learn stuff especially since the games skip a lot or go fast. (Currently on the Chiyo/Sasori stuff) Tobi was always my favorite as a kid because he reminded me so much of Deadpool and had very similar characteristics and even a similar type of voice. But I learned he wasn't in the span of only 20 to 30 minutes or so because of the games so I never had that. I wish he would have been a separate, goofy character, and just remained Deadpool like! Knowing he's serious does kinda ruin it for me because I like the original Tobi's personality a lot.
19:28 If you want to read a very good story (manhwa/webtoon) that has time travel introduced late on that is VERY well thought out, I recommend Kubera. Unlike for one-off plot twist (like in AoT), here time travel is just one plot point and doesn't even appear till few hundred chapters later, yet is executed perfectly. The hints are there, and there are a lot of them, but Kubera does a very good job with making hints and foreshadowing seem like normal dialogue. (For example, when one of a more minor characters is introduced, she says "oh, i remember him, he's a very good fighter" to the character that travels to the past later (won't spoil who that is), and he thinks "wtf i don't remember her, but it would be rude to say that". Well, he didn't remember, because much, MUCH later when we see this character's journey to the past, he meets her in the past and they fight a battle together. She doesn't know he is from the future of course. Also, another one that I love. There is a character that has been missing for quite some time. When one of our MCs asks a god about that character, the god replies "don't search, you will meet her once the time is right". Well, turns out we were supposed to take it literally, cause that character disappeared because the time traveller from before took her to his future from the past, making her disappear for quite some time lmao.)
The Shisui theory was always my favorite because I felt like after being betrayed by his village, his best friend, and having his whole clan deleted, he would definetly be happy with living in a perfect illusion, over the horrible life he got.
I still remember those theory's that pain the leader of the Akatsuki was actually minato which when you think about it would hit so god damn hard imagen Nagato being so pissed at the leaf for all it's done to him (Jiraiya sensei aside) they killed his family and best friend so for an act of vengeance (and world peace) Nagato would get a hold of minato's corpes and use his chakra rods to control his body attacking the leaf as the leader pain
another what if scenario would be future naruto or an alt naruto being tobi. he either had to do some very questionable decision as a hokage that he ends up regretting or he is backstabbed by someone close and ends up going back in time to get revenge on them. an alternative naruto could have ended up being hokage but on very different circumstances ie hes still hated by people and despite doing his best he ends up being kicked out the village due to people fearing him, he wanders aimlessly until he finds a way to set things straight. atleast thats what i can think of at the top of my head.
I remember in highschool I had already figured that Tobi was Obito even before he revealed the Sharingan, I mean I had also had a strong hunch but when they revealed the sharing I knew that it had to be Obito and him calling himself Madara was just some kind of plan because why would Madara wear mask and have cut his signature short hair. It made sense as I realize the right hair was the one that didn’t get crushed by the boulder and he a mongekyo as well, this mongekyo gave him some kind of space time abilities/teleporting. Then in the beginning of Shippuden Kakashi started using the Kamui and the more I thought about it the more I felt like these two time space mongekyo but be related because no other sharingan/mongekyo that we had been exposed to had those kind of abilities.
a somewhat common but not super common theory used to be that Kagami Uchiha is Tobi and that he he went missing in war and was thought to be dead but wasn't actually dead and ended up becoming Tobi and form the Akatsuki and so on was obviously not gonna be the case because even if it wasn't unrealistic it would've been probably the most boring and random outcome ever

The Kakashi backstory is placed between the end of Part one and the first appearance of Tobi is in the end of the first arc of Shipudden,pretty cool foreshadow.

I remember that the most common suggestions on the forums that I read were: 1) Shisui 2) Izuna 3) Kagami ( after 5 Kage / Danzo arc) 4) or someone we don't know yet at the time (this was around 2009, maybe 2010). The arguments against Obito = Tobi were that it was too easy, and to (kinda a ) stupid - we saw how his body was destroyed, he was too much of a badass as the fight with 4th Hokage. After the chapter came out I gave up all my high hopes to expect some great plot twists from Naruto and in fact I haven't been disappointed since then :)
Everyone knew back then and this was 2007-2008. There were a lot of Akatsuki artworks back then depicting Tobi taking off his mask with a photoshopped younger Obito face in his adult body.
The biggest factor that threw people off growing up was when he revealed his face to Kisame and kisame seemed to confirm to the audience that he was who he said he is.
I was of the mind of Obito hosting Madara in some form or fashion because the Masked Man's monicker was the Ghost of the Uchiha, his powers made him feel like a glitch in the world, like he doesn't belong, and a dead leagend inhabiting a younger, but broken body, meddling in the affairs of the present would fit so well. Especially scenes where the Masked Man posed as Madara, reminiscing about Hashirama, or on top of the Madara statue, his connection to Sasuke and grooming him to gain greater powers could've been because he saw a lot of Izuna in him, but couldn't save Izuna. Especially with how it was being revealed. Obito never acts like the Masked Man, if the Reanimation literally ripped Madara's soul from his body and transplanted it into the Reanimated body. Then the nhilistic Obito, who wanted to live a passive life because he considered the world Hell, would suddenly be thrusted back into the driver seat. This would explain why his fighting style and personality was so different from before because Obito is a distinctive individual from Madara. Also why Madara would be playing around so much after being reanimated because if you spent the last several decades cunniving and scheming in borken bodies, a shell of your former self, then suddenly are thrusted back into your prime. Anyone might be understandly get carried away. Also the Yamanaka Mind Transfer jutsus would make the process so easy, but defintely a forbidden practice.
Honestly when you were first described the Tobi=Sasuke theory (which tho insane I’m used to it because I’m a ASOIAF fan and those theories get fucking wild, there’s almost literally an equivalent to Tobi=Sasuke I’ve seen where people think Quaithe is future Daenerys or something) almost immediately reminded me of Infamous 1’s twist with Cole and Kessler, dude time travels trying to prepare his younger self to beat a threat he couldn’t in the future by trying to make him more evil and hardened. But then the millisecond you mentioned the idea of “Hinata dying” as being the reason for Naruto turning evil in this future I immediately thought of the dumb shit Snyder was going to do with Superman in his explanation for the Knightmare timeline. It was apparently going to be explained in one of the JL movies that’ll thankfully never happen is the reason that Superman goes bad in that is solely because Lois dies. Now I can’t get the image of Sasuke as Batman out of head and some random character like Rock Lee traveling back in time for a second to tell younger Sasuke “Hinata is the key!”
Everybody can speculate and say what that want, but at the end of the day. I love the way Kishimoto did the story especially in the Edo Tensei 4th Shinobi Alliance Reveal whilst Tobi fought elsewhere meaning he couldn't be in two places at once (besides shadow clone jutsu maybe 🤔)
I remember being being in a forum talking about who Tobi was back in the day and one guy said it cant be Obito, thats too obvious. People can make therories of anything, thats the fun part, but I dont see how this was a surprise to people who were theorizing at the time. I mean you can literally spell out Tobi's name using the letters in Obito and his hair is basically identical.
I also used to think that Tobi was Izuna due to Tobi telling Sasuke that, like him, he too was a survivor, and also because of Itachi's Genjutsu Flashback showing Sasuke, Madara taking out his eye.
I remember one of the theories was Tobi being Obito, and many fans (me included) believed it, still don't know how since the explanations are yet to come. But the official revealing (starting with the manga) hasn't lost its charm though.
Naruto didn't have to be evil for the Time travelling one. All Naruto needed to do is fail to stop war just like Hashirama. Sasuke could have had his own end of the valley fight but in his timeline the eye of the moon plan never happened. Maybe Naruto died and he needed Ashura's chakra or something, or too many biju died in a future war.... This theory fell apart from me when Sasuke's 2nd ability was some sort of short-term time travel (think 5 seconds) but instead it was just kagetsuchi. The theory had potential, very personal stakes and, so long as biju level chakra is needed for Sasuke to ever time travel over years again, Logic.
Obito being behind the mask was a widely accepted theory back before the reveal. People weren't surprised as far as I remember. Some were disappointed too or even angry.

back in the days when i played Storm 1 with a friend i allways said "Tobi is Obito, it makes sense bc he only shows his eye that didn´t go to Kakashi and the names are similar - Tobi=Obito (T)obito(bi). Naruto becoming evil doesn't sound that crazy considering Obito had the same Naruto mentality as a child yet did many evil acts. I remembering thinking it was too obvious just to be Obito. It too thought it was Obito's body being controlled. I felt there should have been some sort of bigger twist. I also thought Rin might have been a spy in the short period of when we see Kakashi kill her, and the point where it was revealed she threw herself onto his chidori to stop the three tails rampage.

One theory I came across on RUclips years ago, Tobi is Obitos father. He hated Konoha for allowing his son to die in an unnecessary war. Therefore he was easily corrupted by Madara.

My favorite theory is that Tobi is Taiyuchi, the ramen guy. Obviously complete nonsense, even back then, but it's funny to think about and there are actually some things in favor of this theory:
-He was the first person to be nice to Naruto, even before Iruka (which is kinda strange considering that the ENTIRE village shunned the kid). He made sure that Naruto would see him often and trust him.
-We never see his eyes, they are always closed (or, well, not REALLY closed, but he always squints so they appear closed. Important is that we never see the iris)
-In the Uchiha clan photo there is a guy left to Mikoto who looks a lot like him (also squinting)
-In a flashback where we see 12-year-old Minato with his sensei Jiraiya, we also see his two teammates; one of which looks - again - a lot like a child Taiyuchi (and is, again, squinting)
Tobi is just a stand-in for the real masked man. Kara was created to distract the ninja while the plan gets reworked.

Ahhh this comment brings me back to the manga days of Naruto. Thanks for reminding me haha. God, all those theories/memes were so funny to read. Can't believe there was a time when we were all theorizing on message boards or Reddit about Naruto after a chapter drop.
Well, in the end Naruto didn't really change the system that's responsible for most problems in the story so the future Sasuke theory wouldn't be so farfetched.
2 things
1. Sasuke stopping Naruto from being hokage could be an interesting premise without it betraying naruto's character. I see it like Naruto could be an dictator of sorts but it's an reverse of what you might think. He enforces a peace policy to a tee that an power imbalance between Naruto and the village and it's what cause naruto's downfall as a hokage. Which is why Sasuke tries incredibly hard here to stop Naruto in the past from reaching that goal.
2. The only theory here i heard before the reveal was izuna being Tobi which captivated me considering beforehand I never heard izuna in anything and never knew what his backstory was until way later.
It would’ve been cool if in the future Sasuke killed Naruto but encountered the Otsusuki’s by himself and they ravaged the world, stole Sasuke’s eye and sent him back in time somehow similarly to how Sasuke and Boruto got sent back in time in that filler episode. Then Sasuke took on the Tobi persona to gather the tailed beasts and the Infinite Tsukuyomi was actually needed to get him back to the future to get his left eye back and to get revenge.

Great video. I was there and saw a lot of those theories, good times man. My favorite was future evil Naruto. In a way that maintained since Óbito is basically Naruto gone wrong.
I think the future sasuke theory came from naruto storm generations when madara literally reversed time and people probably assumed that sasuke somehow got that ability, generations came out months before the obito reveal so it makes sense.
We need a timeline, where after witnessing Boruto events unfolding, Sasuke goes back in time, slays Tobi and takes his identity to guide the shinobi history for centuries to come.

Izuna being Tobi would've been possible. He had the MS like Madara and was about as powerful, not to mention I see no reason he wouldn't have access to Izanagi. He would of course know the history of Madara and Hashirama and the alias "Tobi" makes just as much sense here as it goes with Obito, since Tobirama was his rival.
Izuna's long lifespan could easily be attributed to either the gedo statue or Zestu, with Pain being used to bring Madara back alongside him. Dreams of a far future indeed!
And Madara could revived him with the Rinnegan

The problem with the face reveal gimmick is that it pretty much requires to surprise the surrounding characters as well as the readers to work, otherwise there would be no point for a character hiding their face. At the moment Kakashi started to face Tobi, any unmasking sequence made his identity obvious.
But if Tobi were anybody else the story would probably not have let Kakashi's team unmask Tobi, and have someone more relevant involved. So I don't think the Shisui option would have been rubbish, could have just found a way to make Edo-Itachi face him for example. Let's say Shisui's plan was to cast a more powerful Kotoamatsukami on the whole world to stop wars, sounds believable.
Also, Tobi didn't even have to be specifically an Uchiha, could have gotten a Sharingan like Kakashi or Danzo. Could have even been some artificial humanoid creature like the Zetsus, that's what some people assumed after seeing his injuried arms turn into goo.
I had no idea that tobi was obito until I finshed watching the series in 2022 lol.

Personaly i subscribe to the theory of evil Naruto who want to dominate all the world and a Good Sasuke from the future who cames to stop him.
Time travel sasuke is silly. Going back in time to stop naruto, but decides to do the attack on the leaf that gets the 9 tails sealed into naruto in the first place. If he was the masked man, he would be a lot stronger than naruto if naruto didn't have the beast.
I love Tobi/Obito, I think he is one of the best written characters ever

Personally, I've always thought it was Obito, because just like the reveal that Yondaime was Naruto's dad, it was really obvious from the get go; and I think it works well as a villain because Obito is kind of a foil to Naruto, an underdog with a very similar life experience of underestimation, failure, being overshadowed by a team mate, love triangle bs, etc.
However, I think there's an universe out there where the reveal is Izuna and the war arc happens completely differently. Izuna is a great foil for Sasuke the same way Obito is for Naruto. He watches his brother being historically villifyied if he doesn't die, he'd be the one other survivor of the massacre with severe brotherly issues, and his plan could boil down to "Okay, it's either an Uchiha's Konoha now, or vengeance" and when he fails, he revives Madara proper.
Sasuke fresh out of his trauma of learning the truth having to face an enemy that could be his equal in a lot of his motivations would be huge. Orochimaru, Danzo and Itachi gave him trouble, but they don't really challenge his morality or world views at the point they happen. The run to get stronger for vengeance only to have their vengeance be in vain because Madara and Itachi are fundamentally different characters having different goals could have been such a huge development.
To me, Tobi was always obviously Obito. It took me until real Madara showed up for real for me to refer to this guy as Madara, in order to keep his identity a secret for my brother who was behind

I've played the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm games ever since I was a kid, with my older brother. So I've kinda known everything although I'm watching the anime for the first time now, to really learn stuff especially since the games skip a lot or go fast. (Currently on the Chiyo/Sasori stuff)
Tobi was always my favorite as a kid because he reminded me so much of Deadpool and had very similar characteristics and even a similar type of voice. But I learned he wasn't in the span of only 20 to 30 minutes or so because of the games so I never had that. I wish he would have been a separate, goofy character, and just remained Deadpool like! Knowing he's serious does kinda ruin it for me because I like the original Tobi's personality a lot.

19:28 If you want to read a very good story (manhwa/webtoon) that has time travel introduced late on that is VERY well thought out, I recommend Kubera.
Unlike for one-off plot twist (like in AoT), here time travel is just one plot point and doesn't even appear till few hundred chapters later, yet is executed perfectly. The hints are there, and there are a lot of them, but Kubera does a very good job with making hints and foreshadowing seem like normal dialogue.
(For example, when one of a more minor characters is introduced, she says "oh, i remember him, he's a very good fighter" to the character that travels to the past later (won't spoil who that is), and he thinks "wtf i don't remember her, but it would be rude to say that". Well, he didn't remember, because much, MUCH later when we see this character's journey to the past, he meets her in the past and they fight a battle together. She doesn't know he is from the future of course.
Also, another one that I love.
There is a character that has been missing for quite some time. When one of our MCs asks a god about that character, the god replies "don't search, you will meet her once the time is right". Well, turns out we were supposed to take it literally, cause that character disappeared because the time traveller from before took her to his future from the past, making her disappear for quite some time lmao.)

The Shisui theory was always my favorite because I felt like after being betrayed by his village, his best friend, and having his whole clan deleted, he would definetly be happy with living in a perfect illusion, over the horrible life he got.

I still remember those theory's that pain the leader of the Akatsuki was actually minato which when you think about it would hit so god damn hard imagen Nagato being so pissed at the leaf for all it's done to him (Jiraiya sensei aside) they killed his family and best friend so for an act of vengeance (and world peace) Nagato would get a hold of minato's corpes and use his chakra rods to control his body attacking the leaf as the leader pain
I think Kagami being Tobi would be more interesting than Shisui, even for the Plot.

he either had to do some very questionable decision as a hokage that he ends up regretting or he is backstabbed by someone close and ends up going back in time to get revenge on them.
an alternative naruto could have ended up being hokage but on very different circumstances ie hes still hated by people and despite doing his best he ends up being kicked out the village due to people fearing him, he wanders aimlessly until he finds a way to set things straight.

I remember in highschool I had already figured that Tobi was Obito even before he revealed the Sharingan, I mean I had also had a strong hunch but when they revealed the sharing I knew that it had to be Obito and him calling himself Madara was just some kind of plan because why would Madara wear mask and have cut his signature short hair. It made sense as I realize the right hair was the one that didn’t get crushed by the boulder and he a mongekyo as well, this mongekyo gave him some kind of space time abilities/teleporting. Then in the beginning of Shippuden Kakashi started using the Kamui and the more I thought about it the more I felt like these two time space mongekyo but be related because no other sharingan/mongekyo that we had been exposed to had those kind of abilities.

a somewhat common but not super common theory used to be that Kagami Uchiha is Tobi and that he he went missing in war and was thought to be dead but wasn't actually dead and ended up becoming Tobi and form the Akatsuki and so on

Back then what sold me "Tobi is Obito" is that Kakashi Gaiden doesn't feel like it's only to set up Kakashi backstory.
The Kakashi backstory is placed between the end of Part one and the first appearance of Tobi is in the end of the first arc of Shipudden,pretty cool foreshadow.

1) Shisui
2) Izuna
3) Kagami ( after 5 Kage / Danzo arc)
4) or someone we don't know yet at the time (this was around 2009, maybe 2010).
The arguments against Obito = Tobi were that it was too easy, and to (kinda a ) stupid -
we saw how his body was destroyed,
he was too much of a badass as the fight with 4th Hokage.
After the chapter came out I gave up all my high hopes to expect some great plot twists from Naruto and in fact I haven't been disappointed since then :)

Everyone knew back then and this was 2007-2008. There were a lot of Akatsuki artworks back then depicting Tobi taking off his mask with a photoshopped younger Obito face in his adult body.
The biggest factor that threw people off growing up was when he revealed his face to Kisame and kisame seemed to confirm to the audience that he was who he said he is.
I was of the mind of Obito hosting Madara in some form or fashion because the Masked Man's monicker was the Ghost of the Uchiha, his powers made him feel like a glitch in the world, like he doesn't belong, and a dead leagend inhabiting a younger, but broken body, meddling in the affairs of the present would fit so well. Especially scenes where the Masked Man posed as Madara, reminiscing about Hashirama, or on top of the Madara statue, his connection to Sasuke and grooming him to gain greater powers could've been because he saw a lot of Izuna in him, but couldn't save Izuna.
Especially with how it was being revealed. Obito never acts like the Masked Man, if the Reanimation literally ripped Madara's soul from his body and transplanted it into the Reanimated body. Then the nhilistic Obito, who wanted to live a passive life because he considered the world Hell, would suddenly be thrusted back into the driver seat. This would explain why his fighting style and personality was so different from before because Obito is a distinctive individual from Madara.
Also why Madara would be playing around so much after being reanimated because if you spent the last several decades cunniving and scheming in borken bodies, a shell of your former self, then suddenly are thrusted back into your prime. Anyone might be understandly get carried away.
Also the Yamanaka Mind Transfer jutsus would make the process so easy, but defintely a forbidden practice.
This theory actually still stands, some people calle it the "Tobidara" theory.
Personally i just see it as Obito roleplaying as Madara lol.

Honestly when you were first described the Tobi=Sasuke theory (which tho insane I’m used to it because I’m a ASOIAF fan and those theories get fucking wild, there’s almost literally an equivalent to Tobi=Sasuke I’ve seen where people think Quaithe is future Daenerys or something) almost immediately reminded me of Infamous 1’s twist with Cole and Kessler, dude time travels trying to prepare his younger self to beat a threat he couldn’t in the future by trying to make him more evil and hardened. But then the millisecond you mentioned the idea of “Hinata dying” as being the reason for Naruto turning evil in this future I immediately thought of the dumb shit Snyder was going to do with Superman in his explanation for the Knightmare timeline. It was apparently going to be explained in one of the JL movies that’ll thankfully never happen is the reason that Superman goes bad in that is solely because Lois dies. Now I can’t get the image of Sasuke as Batman out of head and some random character like Rock Lee traveling back in time for a second to tell younger Sasuke “Hinata is the key!”

Everybody can speculate and say what that want, but at the end of the day. I love the way Kishimoto did the story especially in the Edo Tensei 4th Shinobi Alliance Reveal whilst Tobi fought elsewhere meaning he couldn't be in two places at once (besides shadow clone jutsu maybe 🤔)
I remember being being in a forum talking about who Tobi was back in the day and one guy said it cant be Obito, thats too obvious. People can make therories of anything, thats the fun part, but I dont see how this was a surprise to people who were theorizing at the time. I mean you can literally spell out Tobi's name using the letters in Obito and his hair is basically identical.

I remember one of the theories was Tobi being Obito, and many fans (me included) believed it, still don't know how since the explanations are yet to come. But the official revealing (starting with the manga) hasn't lost its charm though.
Naruto didn't have to be evil for the Time travelling one. All Naruto needed to do is fail to stop war just like Hashirama. Sasuke could have had his own end of the valley fight but in his timeline the eye of the moon plan never happened. Maybe Naruto died and he needed Ashura's chakra or something, or too many biju died in a future war.... This theory fell apart from me when Sasuke's 2nd ability was some sort of short-term time travel (think 5 seconds) but instead it was just kagetsuchi.
The theory had potential, very personal stakes and, so long as biju level chakra is needed for Sasuke to ever time travel over years again, Logic.
Obito being behind the mask was a widely accepted theory back before the reveal. People weren't surprised as far as I remember.

back in the days when i played Storm 1 with a friend i allways said "Tobi is Obito, it makes sense bc he only shows his eye that didn´t go to Kakashi and the names are similar - Tobi=Obito (T)obito(bi). Naruto becoming evil doesn't sound that crazy considering Obito had the same Naruto mentality as a child yet did many evil acts. I remembering thinking it was too obvious just to be Obito. It too thought it was Obito's body being controlled. I felt there should have been some sort of bigger twist. I also thought Rin might have been a spy in the short period of when we see Kakashi kill her, and the point where it was revealed she threw herself onto his chidori to stop the three tails rampage.

Therefore he was easily corrupted by Madara.
