  • One of the top questions asked on the channel is which flight simulator do I prefer, X-Plane 12 or Microsoft Flight Simulator. The fact is, I enjoy both for different reasons. In this live stream, I will show you the pros, and cons of each sim and what are the things that makes both sims enjoyable. The comparison I provide here is not to show which sim is better, but rather what things each sim does really well.

One thing that baffles me about MSFS is the inexplicable lack of functionality for basic features that should be fundamental to any flight sim. Things like a working free camera, a replay system, ILS and ATC that aren’t completely broken, and these are just off the top of my head. To me, it’s proof that all the money in a AAA production can’t fix an incompetent core design. MSFS is visually superior but x-plane is better in every other regard, in my personal opinion.

A very important thing for me is to watch my starts and landings after the flight. I think we all are here cause we are aviation fans and love to see an airliner on final approach. In X-Plane i have nothing to do than choose replay mode, shift-5 and i can watch my landing from tower. That's amazing. No pre-recording, no plugin.
Of course... MSFS looks fantastic but at FL360 with orthos it makes no difference.
I fly only in VR and X-Plane is nearly perfect in VR, VR in MSFS needs a lot of work and i hope they put this a bit higher on their priority list.
At the moment i use XP11/12 for Airliners and my Aerobask fleet, MSFS for sightseeing.

"X-Plane is nearly perfect in VR, VR in MSFS needs a lot of work" - I have the exact opposite experience, as someone who only flies in VR, and honestly, I'm pretty frustrated about it because I've now dropped a bunch of money on X Plane. I feel duped. In X Plane, I'm getting constant crashes to desktop, and my PC is on the high end. SteamVR is an abomination and constantly crashes to desktop, despite owning a machine that is literal definition of "VR ready". Entire addons that I've purchased are presently unusable (including the exorbitantly-priced Hotstart Challenger 650).
Advice to anybody getting bad performance in MSFS VR: NERF THE ONSCREEN SETTINGS whilst in VR, but LEAVE THE VR SETTINGS AT MEDIUM or whatever. You don't need your graphics card splitting an already saturated rendering pipeline between your monitor graphics (which are presumably set around ultra for anybody with a card like the 3080 and up), and your VR headset.

@@danmoretti8898 I never have any CTD in X-Plane and MSFS runs very smooth too in VR at 45FPS and Ultra Settings.
      Thats not the point.
My problem is the usability. The way i can interact with the cockpit with the controllers is terrible in MSFS. I can not move the position inside the aircraft and outside like in X-Plane. The whole camera system of MSFS is crap. And in MSFS the G1000/G3000 etc. is very blurry and unreadable in VR.
I didn't bought the Hotstart Challenger cause I informed myself beforehand that the aircraft is not VR compatible.
      you should always do that.
The Airceafts from Aerobask are jewels in VR.

@@minitobo928 "I didn't bought the Hotstart Challenger cause I informed myself beforehand that the aircraft is not VR compatible."
      Congrats. You're so smart!
In MSFS there is NO incompatibility in VR in the sense that - if you buy it - it will work. Foolish me for not realizing that the vaunted X Plane just randomly has planes that don't work. What a work of art this software truly is. And foolish me for buying an airplane with absolutely zero disclaimer from the company selling it that VR incompatibility is non existent. Regarding the cockpit interaction, using controllers isn't my style, so the mouse works great for me personally (and like crap in X Plane, at least in VR). Regarding the blurry screens in MSFS cockpit, I've never experienced that unless I was running upscaling.

    • @minitobo928
      @minitobo928 Год назад

@@danmoretti8898 That's not a problem of the sim. That's when third party developers don't pay attention to VR compatibility. Some of them do, some don't.
For Example: when i'm in a Toliss Airbus in VR I can use the thumbstick of my controller to move to every seat in the whole plane. Please show me how to do that in MSFS. Didn't found it.

    • @danmoretti8898
      @danmoretti8898 Год назад

@@minitobo928 About the controller thing, you're absolutely correct - X Plane has way better implementation of VR controllers than MSFS (which as I said I prefer mouse anyway, but to each their own). The reality is I've just had very bad luck so far, and there are issues I'm having in X Plane that I never imagined in MSFS. Personally, I'm just not having good luck so far, and I'm obviously butthurt about it. That said, when it works, X Plane is really incredible - this of course makes it all the more annoying when I get constant crashes to desktop. Sorry for being rude earlier.

My personal comparative pros and cons:
    Xplane:
    + super easy user interface
+ Easy and logical filesystem for mods
+ Rapid load times by comparison
    + Superior ground physics
    + Great default airports
+ Can assign control profiles to planes
+ Easy to interface custom hardware without paying for 3rd party softwate interfacers (e.g. honeycomb manager)
+ More access to high quality freeware. Great community website with no silly download countdown.
+ Can change plane and airlort ehilst in flight session
    +Austin always listens
    + Great Replay system
    - dark cockpits look terrible
    - performance/graphics ratio is very poor
    - clouds look awful
    - lots of graphical bugs with particles and aliasing
    Msfs:
    + Looks real
    +Respectable performance/graphics ratio.
+ More and more high quality aircraft becoming available.
+Navdata is free and up to date
    - terrible UI
    - terrible file system
    - appalling loadtimes
    - always a forced update that ruins something
    - ground physics for airliners really unrealistic
    - childish atc which has to be disabled meaning you can't use it just for aural ATIS.
    - Can barely use nice hardware without spending lots of money and time getting it working
    - default airports are really poor.

A bit unfair to XP in some respects, but there you go. However, I would much rather set up flight plans, alter routes, etc. in XP than MSFS. The operation of the Garmins (530,430 and G1000) is so much easier in X-Plane - particularly as you can pop them out as complete instruments with all their controls. You can be looking anywhere in the main view, but your resizable 530 stays where you want it, and altering stuff on that is a breeze. Big buttons, big curlies on the knobs - same with transponders, autopilots and so on. So, you can still be looking in your usual cockpit view, but can easily access your avionics without having to zoom in on them. That and the simple camera system, allied with a much more accessible menu system (which you did mention) make flying great. Flying IFR (even GA at 3000' upwards) and coming in to a decent airport is fine in X-Plane. The scenery is less important, particularly if it's cloudy. With some ortho and other additions, XP looks OK. However, it does not compare with MSFS in that respect, and Laminar can't match it. I (and I am a pilot) prefer X-Plane's physics, but the differences between the sims get even less when you are flying an airliner on autopilot - which seems to occupy a lot of RUclips time :-) I spend very little time in MSFS, so if I'm wrong, let me know!

@@Q8Pilot Yes, I've been watching you since you started! In MSFS, it's difficult to adjust the avionics when hand flying - both in IFR and VFR - got to look at the AI or the real horizon, not bury yourself into zoomed in avionics. Yes, you can adjust them from the cockpit view, but they then look pretty small, and it's very fiddly. With an autopilot on, it's better, but RW it would be very distracting from ensuring everything is working, and you are still being kept the right way up:-) Fortunately, plenty of room for both sims.

Thanks for the great stream again Q8. I have both X-Plane 12 and MSFS, and as Q8 said, choosing which one depends on what you what to get from a flight sim. I always go with XP12 because I wanted the flying experience, learning how the plane handles in various wind conditions, how to navigate, how the avionics - I expect the world graphics should be reasonably accurate. So XP12 met my expectations and more, and I tend to agree with Austin's stated vision of focusing on the flying rather than the graphics. Still, Laminar needs to upgrade their graphics and world representation in the longer term.
MSFS really is beautiful and I enjoy flying it now and then. But as Q8 pointed out the menu system is clunky and setting up my VKB stick and throttle is really frustrating. So much so that I like watching MSFS streams more than actually flying in it. I've invested quite a bit in XP12, so have to make most it ;-) My only gripe is that getting good quality aircraft and addons is getting pretty expensive (this applies to DCS as well) !
So, never really thought in terms of which sim is 'better'. It's kinda like playing FPS, you can either go on a rampage in Call of Duty or Battlefield, or join a team in Squad for a strategic, cautious, 'realistic' approach.

Thanks Q8! Another quality video. I agree with pretty much everything. I am RW pilot. "Study Level" user of XP since 2000. MFS since 2020. Rather than be redundant, I will mention a few extras:
    The install process:
MFS is cumbersome, painful, takes forever, even on fast fiber, unreliable, has annoying mandatory updates even if you have customer waiting, SOL. MFS places files everywhere which makes the uninstall process even worse. Obligatory registration to MS Store, XBOX, and Ecosystem. Windows only. Fast net required, pretty much all the time if you want the awesome scenery or you will get "Connection Lost" error. Aircraft updates that you buy from marketplace take MFS approval and really slows update process.
XP is clean and neat. Everything goes in 1 folder which can be moved/copied anywhere. No uninstall necessary, just delete the folder. Mac, Linux, Windows. No forced joining the "Club". Can be run from CD. No net required, except for authentication if not on CD.
That being said I am using MFS more often due to G5000 advanced coupled VNAV and Longitude. LR needs G5000 yesterday. Touch controllers and Glass is the future.
The XP linear, over reflective, sky blue rain puddles look unrealistic and silly. Subjective call here.

      @lknfly1166 Год назад

@@PilotUnknownX Good question! One thing that is crucial on my side, is when I create a flight plan VFR or IFR in RL, I must pay attention a lot about the weather conditions which is one of the cornerstone in Aviation and that could be very challenging sometimes especially in GA. Therefore if there are some CB or TS on my path then I will have to avoid them for the sake of safety... In msfs (that I do like, no worries lol) it definitely don't simulate this important matter, no matter what are METAR/TAF you can still fly a C152 in CB or thunderstorm like in arcade game and you won't encounter any sort of danger as up/downdraft that could go to 5000/10000 ft/min, convectives, severe and unsafe icing conditions, that is lethal in RL and in Xplane! It could be very instructive to learn about the weather and its dangers, learning is fun as well! ...
In msfs it's more about playing, enjoying which is cool and relaxing for sure but you don't need to care about safety based on real data weather, the clouds are just cosmetic (arcade) yeap it's beautiful no doubt but it doesn't give any picture for simmers about how it goes in the real skies which imposes some humility in front of Mother Nature!!! ...
That is a major difference in terms of realism and in other terms of "professionalism" between both of the Flight Sim...
Also the sensation of flying is closer in XP to real life (imo based on my own experiences, that's subjective, I guess inertia forces got a better deal in XP than msfs, it's an other topic that demands to dig a little bit more on that subject) ... However msfs is very enjoyable but a way too friendly so far in terms of realism. Wait & See for further SU! ;-)

@@animatedchristmascollector3754 I think his comment was more related to the fact that MSFS is more „gamey“ in the sense of races, landing-competition giving you points, being able to set up flightplans automatically without knowledge on how it works. And having a multplayer-mode where users like to fly into each others. And also setting an arcade-flightcontrol etc.
XP on the other side is used to model planes before they fly in real and have been used by professionals. Not talking about the possibility of getting a FAA-certification with the licenced hardware. And the flight-model is more realistic in general as statet by many real-pilots. Denying it again and again doesn‘t make it more true. For example MSFS lacks inertia big time. Not XP.

Old thread I know, but after 2.5 years with MSFS, I decided to go back to XPlane the other day. I fired up XP10 over the Thanksgiving weekend and decided to switch to XP12 only to find out that most of the $$$stuff from 10 doesn't work in 12. I'm going to miss my JRollon CRJ200. Even with the superior visuals and owning about $1000 in airports and another $500 in airplanes for MSFS, I just missed the feeling of flight that XP delivers (Yes, I do fly real GA). I will say the new Zibo 737 gives PMDG a run for their money despite being free.
I'm thinking back to XP10 when the "Plausible" approach first made me cringe. It was never that plausible and had zero resemblance to reality. I do not understand how Austin literally missed the bus with streaming orthos and photogrammetry. Even with AutoOrtho (Which took hours to get working and too low res), the current scenery leaves much to be desired in VFR. I hope he reconsiders and gets it together. Why not strike a deal with Google Earth to compete with MSFS and Bing?

There are few things people tend to forget :
      1. The sim age
Xplane has been aroung for many years, comparing the 2 is unfair. If we were to compare, then MSFS is the winner because, it's been released "recently" so to speak and in many points is up to Xplane which has been there for a very long time.
      2. The human feeling of "loyalty".
Simmers have been using Xplane before MSFS, they got to love it, they built a bond with it, for many, Flight Sim started with Xplane; Xplane made them flight simmers. And there is MSFS coming...as humans, we rarely love 2 things at the same level, and rarely forget the first love. I don't see how those who started long ago can "spit" on XPlane and "betray" it. No matter how good the new MSFS will be, they will always find a good defense for their beloved Xplane and it's normal, it's human.
We should just stop comparing them but rather, take full advantage of the 2. Excellent developpers like PMDG and Fenix are doing an amazing job on MSFS, like Toliss on Xplane. Let's just enjoy the best time ever for Flight Simulation!
Comparing the 2 becomes now boring frankly! Pros and cons are there for both but it's the case in every aspect of life: they should just be a matter of preference not facts, not necessarly making one sim better than the other.

@@jeluna You are right, but what I am sick to death of is these people watching say V1 Simulations fly the Toliss and constantly asking is it better than the Fenix, or almost begging him to say MSFS is better. There are clear wins for both, but this constant need to hear MSFS is better is just getting on my nerves.
You can not compare planes across Sims without taking into account the sim. Its pointless. But it is just constantly the same question from people who dont even know how to fly the plane anyway in the sim, as long as they here MSFS/FENIX is better they are happy!
It is just so childish. The same as when they keep comparing things to the FBW NEO, like yes Point to point flying the FBW and FENIX are really good, Also the Fenix and the FBW only have one engine type at the moment, but as long as they here it is better they are happy. I hate what the community has become.
I disagree on Sim age however. What MS/ASOBO released originally was abysmal, they have all that money and talent and I am sorry the original release was awful! Did they not look at the competition? Also if it was not for people like me in the forums the 1000's of us saying sort it out I highly doubt it would of come on so far. There is no excuse for releasing what they originally released in the state it was in, no excuse they were the last they should of had it together and they did not.

Every 6 months I reinstall MSFS and spend the first 20 minutes being absolutely in awe of the graphics at whichever airport I spawn into. Then I take off, remain absolutely gobsmacked by the graphics, and tell myself the flight model isn't great but I'll just learn to deal with it, that the graphics are just that good. Then I come in to land and the plane is jerking all over the place (as if there's no fluidity in the atmosphere), I can't hold my RMB and look around simultaneously, and the plane floats for an absolute eternity before finally coming down to rest with a lifeless thus onto the runway, and it's really those last 20-30 seconds that have me instantly re-deleting MSFS and crawling back to XP12's horrible framerates and comparatively horrible graphics. X-Plane's flight model is as superior to MSFS's as MSFS's graphics are to XP's. And in a flightsim, I'll take the better flight model every time when the gap is that large. I should also add that XP12's sounds are also an order of magnitude better, and I like being in full control of my sim updates. Nevertheless, I'm glad we have both of them and that the hobby is thriving.

Might have to go back to MSFS. X-Plane is a terrific sim. It really puts you through the paces of setting up flights. Very realistic... then it crashes. The worst part about X-Plane is you can't save flights. You go through all the procedures to set up a flight, which sometimes can take hours. Then... it crashes, and you have to start all over again - from scratch. In MSFS, saving is/ or was like hitting the PAUSE button. Exiting. Come back, and pick up where you left off. X-Plane is looking more and more like junk.

With MS, it's more like you just hit the "PAUSE" button. When you restart the game, and choose a saved game, It's like you never left. More or less, because you may have to make a few adjustments but nothing major.

I wonder why XP devs didn't choose to host a data base of orthophotos of high-quality to download for the earth, considering they don't have the tech MFSF has. Like both platforms, the are both great and use both. But like more the scientific approach of X-plane 12, it is more about physics. Take for example this little detail about the rain passing in the windshield and reacting to wind... and you can apply the same where there's physics (or trying to perform like in the real world). About the visuals, this is a little subjective but i find the x-plane more natural. For msfs, i like more the visuals, but i can also make x-plane close to that, applying x-world, autoortho and other things...

The engine on the JPLogistics C-152 will fail due to overspeed if you climb at full power unless you turn off the realistic mode. Ironically, this is not very realistic since in a real 152 or 172 this doesn't happen because the airspeed is low and the prop is loaded up in the climb. About 2300-2400 rpm is all you'll get climbing at full power.

Do you realize that you took off in the wrong direction when starting off in XP at the beginning of the vid? According to the windsock, you took off WITH the wind. You did it again in Kuwait. Lol. Just bustin your chops a bit...
I am a real world pilot, and can tell you incontrovertibly that XP's flight physics are MUCH more realistic than those in MSFS. I also have both sims, BUT I find I use them 90-10 in favor of XP12. MSFS is just too buggy and hard to get to work with high end graphics and processors. When it works, I like to fly low level VFR to see all the terrain. But when I truly want to fly, IT'S ONLY XP12!!! MSFS does look stunning in certain areas, but they are surprisingly similar in most other places. But XP's full package is just better in general. My BIGGEST GRIPES AGAINST XP11/12 however, are the BLURRY CLOUDS, geometrical taxi curves which are nowhere near smooth curves and how harshly it taxes your system resources. I have one of the most high end pc builds you can put together currently, and XP12 STILL ONLY runs at around 50 to 60 fps. Of course I have everything maxed out graphically, but still...
I do enjoy MSFS when I want to low-fly around a well done city, to see the sights. But as I mentioned, when it's all about flying, which is approximately 90% of the time, or just practicing for my real world flights, it's ALWAYS XP.
One more thing, you said that MSFS is very entertaining... It is because it was built for kids who are gamers, INSTEAD of being built for pilots. XP was built for pilots. That is a very distinctive, and best representative separation between the two. And you said, in the part of the vid where you were starting the MSFS part, that in MSFS, "you feel like you are flying in the real world." I think you should change this statement just a bit for it to be more accurate. I'd say, "It LOOKS like you're flying in the real world." That is a more accurate statement. But it "FEELS LIKE YOU'RE FLYING IN THE REAL WORLD" should be directed to XP12. As the feeling is how the aircraft behaves and interacts, which is much better in XP. But MSFS definitely "LOOKS" like you are in the real world. Sure. And the flight model difference in the air between the two sims, is just as stark in XP's favor as you noted on the ground, you just don't notice it as easily if you aren't a real world pilot.
Q8, I think you miss something in your summation. Sim, means simulator. Which means it is supposed to simulate the skill of whatever it is. In this case IT'S FLYING!!!! So a flight simulator should concentrate on FLYING, NOT graphics!!! The immersion is about FLYING, not the ground. So I think you have it completely backwards in your summation. There are tons of "GAMERS" in the flight sim world these days. But that is NOT who sims were made for, ever. They were made for people who want to practice the "REAL" skill of whatever the sim copies. Gamers are enamored with the graphics of the ground and such. Sure. But that is more for games than simulators. So despite who comes into the sim world, its purpose can NOT change just to accommodate them. Real world pilots are still the vital users of flight sims, NOT the gamers. And that's who the dev's should have in mind as they develop either sim. I completely disagree with your ending points of view. 1000%!

Both sims are great, no doubt. My main sim now though is still XP11. It's just more suitable for my needs, and it performs way better in VR than MSFS. Applying control profiles to aicraft addons is a huge plus for me, I hate MSFS controls UI with passion, without the ability to assign profiles. MSFS also doesn't have roll turbulence modelled at all, only shakes the plane on yaw axis, which looks dreadful, especially in VR. Flight model and general physics are pretty close, but XP11/12 still wins as it feels more natural, while MSFS feels kinda artificial. It's hard to explain, but that is how I feel it. I also don't fiddle anymore with sceneries in XP11/12, as I use Autoortho, whci does work the same as scenery in MSFS, although I downloaded SimHeaven autogen for it, as it's much better than XP11/12 default. Also a HUUUUUGE plus for me in XP11/12 is the airports, as all are hand made. God bless scenery gateway system. I don't have a single addon airport installed in XP, while in MSFS I simply must go chase addon airports and finally purchase some. Big issue on my end. But Asobo is already testing MSFS scenery gateway system, so it's just a matter of time when MSFS will have hundreds of hand crafter airports in a default sim.
Also, ActiveSky support for XP12 is another nail in the MSFS coffin from my view. I don't fancy real time weather in MSFS usually, so yep, big fan of ActiveSky, much realistic turbulence, visibility, and of course my fav feature - historic weather.
As always, it all depends on your matter of preference, what sim you will choose. I fly in both sims, but for serious flying XP11 is ready, while MSFS just still isn't there (few reasons for that statement).
BTWE my MSFS boots pretty fast, although I'm using Steam version. be sure to use -fastlaunch parameter for the exe.

Based on what I saw here I wouldn't devote all the computer resources and investment in learning to even tryout MSFS. The difference in graphics doesn't seem all that better to me compared to my X-Plane set up (orthos and custom airports/meshes). I didn't like the look of the interface either. X-Plane physics and the consistency of the experience have kept me around since the 90's. I have developed lots of my own aircraft/rotorcraft and the science of flight is well served by the XP tool set. Granted the ATC and multiplayer are pretty much worthless and lots of the default aircraft/scenery are rather plain. The best that X-Plane has to offer is pretty good if you're willing to spend the time, effort, and money to access the premium experience. I would have liked to have seen some views of some arid desert scenery from high altitudes in the comparison (something that X-Plane is particularly disappointing in).

I've been using MSFS forever. I started with MSFS 2000 and have bought every one since then. They all worked pretty much flawlessly. Now, after 4 years, msfs2020 is still a broken product. Mainly the disconnection of controls during a flight. Sometimes using the brakes during taxi the game will say You Crashed. Instead of fixing these and other issues with the game, asobo just keeps adding stupid 'game' features, such as dune (no doubt for the xbox crowd). They killed the Google Maps mod, which was a fantastic add on. Much more realistic looking than the default bing maps. And I can't leave out the silly twirling airplanes, vehicles, etc that appear at airports. MSFS2020 actually worked well it's first year or so. But has only gotten worse since and fixing things is not a priority to the devs. Currently, I doubt I'll buy msfs2024. I will however buy X-Plane 12.

Before the 9/11 attack, you could crash the planes in MSFS, but after Microsoft learned that the terrorists used it for training, they disabled the crash physics and animations. So I think it is a choice by Microsoft to not include it.

    • @goldgamer8446
      @goldgamer8446 Год назад +1

That sounds like a strange explanation…they still can train to fly a plane into a building. The (fake and highly unrealistic) explosion doesn‘t change anything in how they can learn to steer a plane…🤔

@@goldgamer8446 Tried to include a couple of links, but it is not showing up here. I don't know it personally, but it was a lot of talk after the attacks. Here are quotes from the links:
"Microsoft Flight Simulator removed all the aircraft crash animation after 9-11 terrorist attack from all it's future editions."
"Microsoft Flight Simulator is one video game franchise that was forever changed following 9/11. Quite unsurprisingly, Microsoft removed the World Trade Center from the series starting with the 2002 edition. But more significantly, all sorts of crash damage and plane collision animations were removed from future installments into the series."

@@wulff-production5644 Thanks. Yeah I‘ve heard about them having removed the WTC from the scenery after 09/11. But it still a bit a controversal decision I think. They didn‘t remove the Pentagon for example. And removing the explosions was probably (i guess) only out of respect for the victims. I just think that technically it doesn‘t change anything in my opinion.

@@goldgamer8446 Yes, the topic was that they (allegedly) used the sim to practice, so to distance themselves this was what MS did out of fear, and probably not thought through. It was an outcry in some countries demanding that MSFS should be banned. I guess if you actually crashed a plane into a building, you wouldn't see any explosions anyway:-)

@@wulff-production5644 Yeah you are right. It makes sense to distance themselves because of the pressure. I think I remember now. Thanks 👍

Starting around 42:20 when you mentioned Microsoft's "twitch channel", referring specifically to the "developer update", it's nice to have that in MSFS as well as the "Wish List", but whether or not Asobo delivers on such items is still questionable. Overall, I prefer quality over quantity, Asobo have delivered quantity in their flight simulator, whereas Laminar Research have done a great job with quality in their X-Plane 12.

Don't buy X-plane12 !! It's uses Vulcan, which is not available on the most GPU's. (GeForce GTX does'nt support vulcan for example)
Without Vulcan. X-Plane-12 is useless as an airplane without wings.
