무작정 떠난 세계일주 (6편) - 막시무스의 사이프러스 녹색 정원 토스카나
세계 일주 6일차 이탈리아 5일차 로마 새벽 5시 50분이다. 오늘은 로마 교외로 떠난다. 로마를 떠나 아직 어두운 새벽을 가로질러 북으로 향했다. 이탈리아 고속도로 휴게소도 우리네 휴게소랑 비슷하지만 우리네 휴게소는 휴식공간이 많다. 이곳은 좀 더 마트 분위기에 가깝다. 로마 시내를 벗어나 북으로 올라가는 길은 남부 이탈리아를 내려갈 때와 사뭇 비슷하다. 북으로 올라갈수록 중부 이탈리아의 드넓은 평원이 그 끝도 알 수 없이 펼쳐진다. 이곳이 바로 그 유명한 발도르차 대평원이다.
이탈리아에서도 가장 이탈리아스러운 풍광이 있는 곳이다. 영화 글라디에이터의 막시무스가 홀로 외로이 귀향했던 드넓은 평원의 배경이 되었던 곳이다. 토스카나는 수많은 영화의 단골 배경이 될 정도로 그 역사와 스토리가 풍부하다. 아름다운 사이프러스 가로수 어디에선가 막시무스가 당장 튀어나올 것 같은 풍경이다. 영화에선 막시무스가 황제에게 배반 당하고 머나먼 게르만 땅에서 홀로 도망치듯이 귀향해서 집에 왔지만, 도착해서 보니 처자가 모두 목매달려 죽은 장면을 보면서 뼈 사무치게 슬피 울던 장소이다. 발도르차평원을 정신없이 달리다 보면 어느새 그 발길은 천공의 성에 멈추어 있다. 치비타 디 반뇨레조는미야자키 하야오의 ‘천공의 성 라퓨타'의 모티브가 되었던 곳이다.
화산재로 이루어지 이곳은 2500년의 역사를 견뎌왔지만 지금은 죽어가는 도시이다.
치비타 디 반뇨레조는 안전상의 이유로 거주민이 10명도 채 안 된다고 한다. 성이 지금 도 붕괴되고 있어서 100년 이전에 사라진다고 하니 안타까움이 들었다. 아직도 아름다운 중세 건물 사이로 관광객들을 위한 맛집과 상점들은 붐빈다. 성 안채 집들은 전통적인 고전미와 향긋한 꽃내음을 간직한 소박함이 묻어있다. 광장으로 통하는 모든 골목길엔 여행객들만 분주히 오가면서 성안의 모든 곳을 누빈다. 몇 안 되는 기념품 가게에선 다채로운 토산품과 토스카나 와인을 주로 팔고 있다.
마을광장 맞은편에 있는 맛집에선 우동 국수발 굵은 면의 파스타가 특산물이자 별미이다. 성곽에서 바라본 성과 절벽의 풍광은 매우 환상적이다. 토스카나주 시에나도에 있는 몬테풀치아노는 로마에서 186km로 꽤 먼 거리에 있다. 인구 14,000여 명의 작은 중세도시 몬테풀치아노는 영화 트와일라이트의 배경지이다. 이 작은 중세도시는 세계 최고의 품종인 몬테풀치아노 포도 와이너리로 유명하다. 흥미로운 점은 이곳 지하 깊은 곳엔 과거 지하에 있던 감옥.무덤.조개 화석들이 보존되어 있다. 다른 와이너리와는 달리 이곳은 높은 성 아래 지하 깊은 곳에 와인 숙성 저장소가 있어서 품질을 유지해 준다.

Round Travel World (Part 6) - Maximus' Cypress Green Garden Tuscany
It is 5:50 in the morning in Rome, Day 5, Italy, Day 6 of Around the World. Today we leave for the outskirts of Rome. We left Rome and headed north through the still dark dawn. Italian highway rest areas are similar to our rest areas, but our rest areas have a lot of rest areas. This place has more of a supermarket atmosphere. The road going north out of downtown Rome is quite similar to the road going down southern Italy. As you go north, the wide plains of central Italy spread out with no end in sight. This is the famous Val d’Orcia Plain.
It is the place with the most Italian scenery in Italy. This was the setting for the wide plains where Maximus returned home alone in the movie Gladiator. Tuscany is so rich in history and stories that it has become a frequent setting for numerous movies. It is a landscape where Maximus appears to pop out from somewhere along the beautiful cypress trees. In the movie, Maximus was betrayed by the emperor and returned home alone as if he were running away from a distant Germanic land, but when he arrived, he saw that his wife and children had all been hanged, and it was a place where he cried heartbreakingly. As we run frantically through the Val d'Orcia Plain, you will soon find yourself stopping at a castle in the sky. Civita di Bagnoregio is the place that served as the motif for Hayao Miyazaki’s ‘Laputa, Castle in the Sky’.
Made of volcanic ash, this city has endured 2,500 years of history, but is now a dying city.
Civita di Bagnoregio is said to have less than 10 residents for safety reasons. It was sad to hear that the castle is still collapsing and will disappear less than 100 years ago. Restaurants and shops for tourists are still crowded among the beautiful medieval buildings. The houses in the castle’s main building are steeped in simplicity with traditional classic beauty and fragrant flower scents. In all the alleys leading to the square, only tourists are busy coming and going and exploring all parts of the castle. The few souvenir shops mainly sell colorful souvenirs and Tuscan wine.
At the restaurant across from the village square, udon noodles and thick pasta are specialties and delicacies. The scenery of the castle and cliffs seen from the castle is very fantastic. Montepulciano, located in Sienado, Tuscany, is quite far from Rome at 186km. Montepulciano, a small medieval city with a population of about 14,000, is the setting for the movie Twilight. This small medieval city is famous for its wineries of Montepulciano grapes, the world's best grape variety. What is interesting is that prisons, tombs, and shell fossils that were once underground are preserved deep underground here. Unlike other wineries, this one has wine aging storage deep underground under the high castle to maintain the quality.
