- 6 years in the making.
This has become well rounded enough for me to consider this a success.
I don’t see any reason to continue recording new versions from this point on.
The layers in this version were recorded at the end of last month, the bass naked on the 27th and bass lurch on the 31st, and the majority of the mixing and editing was done just recently.
I managed to eventually get the heartbeat emphasis in there in the end, but it is very deep in the mix and is only there to add the smallest amount of kick to the bassline in a set-up where sub-frequencies are important.
To top it all off I put some tape hiss in there to keep that analogue feel overall.
The main drive behind this has always been that it’s a hobby of mine, and that I would gain a great amount of gratification if I could pull something like this off, and actually capture that Howell sound.
But I’ve realised the by-product of this is that it now provides people with an accurate and authentic recreation of this particular bassline, for those who may not be as fortunate to own the actual original.
A lot of time and dedication has gone into this.
If you want to use this I’m happy to let people do that, as long as they’re providing the appropriate acknowledgment to me being the one who created it.

The bassline is what does it for me on this version. It think it's why it's my favourite.
I dont care what anyone says, the baseline in any doctor who theme is the real GOAT part.
Fantastic! You’ve really Nailed it! 😎😊
I know it’s not there but I kept hearing the other “sparkle” elements really quietly as if they had been turned down which can only be my brain subconsciously trying to hear them where I know they must be as it felt like I was listening to the original! 😁
This is so good! Amazing work!
Fantastic! This reminds me of one of those isolated track videos where just one instrument or voice is singled out. I'd love to hear this on a growling Rickenbacker.
This is literally perfect
Well, not to me 😂😂. But thank you.
This is some seriously impressive work here, well done!
It sounds amazing dude. Thoughts on the orbital theme?
The heartbeat for all Whovians
Touch of class is that!
My most favourite part of the doctor who theme tune is the bass line , a very unique and distinctive bass line, anyway I like it, nice one 👍
epic mate would love to use this to then add it onto other sound bits to make a theme for my lego who
I've been exploring vst to get the sound. It took a while till I found something I was satisfied with. It was the GX - 80 vst (but the demo version since i was testing it) I found. After messing with controls and a eq and chorus pedal vst. It was pretty much dead on with the original.
Yeah Cherry Audio knocked it out of the water. And I don't even touch Arturia's anymore.
Oh! Extremely impressed!!!!
Sounds amazing!!!
Amazing!
This is brilliant. Between us we have the bass and melody 😂. I have the Odyssey part nailed.
I figured out the melody a while back too.
Not bothered with the vocoder.
This recreation is very useful for any Howell recreation. A few days ago Roland released a software version of the Jupiter 4 I’m trying to recreate the brass maybe Howell started with either the Trumpet or the Trombone factory preset, one of the 2.
he used trombone
@@PlantGaming69420 yeah in the Roland Jupiter 4 Software it’s called the 1970 Synth Trombone
DOPE! thanks
Would love to have an A/B comparison...but not tell anyone which is which. :)
Unfortunately that would involve actually uploading large chunks of the original bassline, which I can’t do.
@@lawrencet83 Mainly because it’s not fair on behalf of the RWS for me to release any of the material. It’s not posted anywhere online for a reason.
@@therestorationofdrwho1865 use the 5.1 rips then?
wow 6 years
Essentially. In the background since I started this channel basically I’ve been trying to make this.
It still isn’t as good as the original of course, that always hit different. Part will always come down to digital versus analog though.
I like to think that maybe this is what the bassline would’ve sounded like had he recorded it a day later.
Could you make a Christmas DW theme?
Just an idea..
nice
I'm looking for someone to commission to build me a personal Doctor Who theme for a fan film...is that something you're interested in?
Somewhat haha. Depends on the kind of direction you’re looking at and wether that’s something I could follow.
I noticed that there’s a sort of muffled, almost detuned, pitch bent sound on the “dum de dum” bass, not just the “avrum” bass
It’s sort of punch like (different from that sticky hit sound)
There are some elements that I didn’t even up having the opportunity to enhance as much as I would’ve liked.
One day when I’m in a position to mess around with it again I’ll be aiming to incorporate a few things.
@@therestorationofdrwho1865 nah, you got it all on this one, though, I thought your layer recreation 2 sounded amazing, but maybe having the other parts of the theme in there made it difficult to here that bassline fully. Also, I don’t think my original comment is correct anymore, I just had to listen a little more, and tweak a little more, and now I’m pretty much there (there was no detuned, pitch bent sound needed on it, in fact, I think the heartbeat bass might be the thing that I thought was making that sound for the dum de dum part)
@@jereloproduces9509 I do find mine to sound a little more flat than it needs to be. I need to up the twang to the attack and what not.
@@therestorationofdrwho1865 mm, maybe. Being a perfectionist is annoying, because you could make it sound exactly like what you want, but then it will sound dull, whereas if you don’t make it sound exact, it might have more oomph to it

Looks like a big fat failure right there pal 🙂.
@@therestorationofdrwho1865 I don't care what you think, I'm far too intelligent to care.
My account was hacked and this link spammed everywhere.

No response from the person I have proven wrong with my intelligence. What a surprise!
@@DrWhoFan_J
If you really were so intelligent, you wouldn’t waste so much time arguing about it in half of all your comments.
In reality, you’re just annoying and no one likes you.
In regards to me not responding quickly enough to your liking, I have other things to do usually, I’m not chronically online like yourself.
The most intelligent thing you could possibly do at this point is shut up.
@@therestorationofdrwho1865
You are the most childish here, I can easily tell you liked your own comment. Nobody sane (so nobody outside of your "theme society cult") would do such a thing.
