Exceedingly glad to say that my wife and I were in that crowd for that gig at Glastonbury. It had just pelted it down and many people were sheltering only to be entirely hooked by the music and stay all the way through, even though the rain stopped quite quickly. One guy behind me said, and I quote "that was the best thing I've seen all festival".
Wife and I knew precisely who they were and made a point of seeing them, of course.

Not the first time Doctor Who got a recognition in Glastonbury though. Orbital did ever play their arrangement of Doctor Who theme at Glastonbury.

You are joking right? Or you are not a DW fan. Look up Matt Smith and The Orbital playing the Theme at Glasto.

Totally amazing. I never thought we'd ever see the Radiophonic Workshop live, with people like Dick Mills up there. It'd be good to see some of the other excellent Radiophonic people too, like Elizabeth Parker. And deeply sad, of course, that it's far too late for Delia Derbyshire to be part of this. I'm amazed this hasn't had more publicity.

Elizabeth Parker's amazing soundtrack to The Living Planet is one of my all-time favourite albums, electronic or otherwise. Like everything else to do with the Radiophonic Workshop, once it got dismantled in an all too commonplace act of British cultural vandalism, a lot of their work was unavailable for a long time, and it was only in 2016 it was finally available again on CD and download after it's original and short-lived 1984 release.

Such a great theme! This version couldn't be more 80's if it tried! :)

      CarboKnights Try mid 60's !!!
I think Delia was a pure genius, her work influenced many of her peers, such as Pink Floyd.

@@trespire But this is the 1980s version so its more of a 60s / 80s mashup - strong elements of the original but with what is now the 80s nostalgia. 🙂🙂

Been a fan for my whole life, and it's great to see those pioneers playing at Glasto! They way they actually made the music was mind-boggling and incredibly time consuming.
May their legacy live on forever!

It is still extraordinary how this sound - and combination of sounds - that became part of the national language before I was born 50 years ago, is still considered relevant enough to produce variants into our future.

Oh my word, I wish I was there for that! Howell's version was and is brilliant, to see it played live in front of an appreciative audience... I think I have something in my eye. Thanks for posting it. (Lovely to see Peter soak up the appreciation at the end too, by all accounts a lovely man).

    • @DanmadeTV

Peter is absolutely a lovely man. I emailed him years ago (via his website) asking where I could get hold of his theme tune to The Body in Question and a piece of incidental music written for the same series "The Greenwich Chorus" and, totally unexpected, he sent me the highest quality MP3 files of both.
I wish we'd kept the dialogue going, because the work of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop has always fascinated me. In fact, Peter along with Dick Mills, Paddy Kingsland, Brian Hodgson and the legendary and sadly-missed Delia Derbyshire, were all responsible for me pursuing a life-long career in radio and now (I hope) music.
I hope you don't mind this bit of shameless self-promotion, but I've just finished my 60th anniversary arrangement of the Doctor Who theme tune, preceded by a mini "making of the 1963 theme" documentary. Doctor Who: Theme 60 is awaiting release on iTunes/Apple Music, Spotify, Deezer, Pandora, iHeartRadio, RUclips Music, Amazon and other online music retailers, but you can hear the pre-release version on my RUclips channel @danmade.studio

For a TAFE assessment, I had to do stage lighting for any piece of music. I chose this version of the Doctor Who theme! Of course, the system I used had problems that even the teacher couldn't figure out, and I had one hour. Well, now I know what could have been…
I did make something. I passed the cert III course, after all. Also, I looked like the biggest nerd, blasting this music through the speakers. It sounded epic though!

I found that quite funny but also heart-warming that they were dancing along like they were at a rave, a testament to the quality of the tune, that's it stands alone as a good piece of music as well as a TV theme.

Put this in a similar video but does anyone else think the visuals in the midsection represent The Doctor being woven in the loom and the tunnel representing his birth into the 80's music?
Or am I being way too trippy and hoopy right now?
I've seen the same performance twice in quick succession and think I'm on to something.
