The funny story about play is that it was written to be an instrumental song, but Saiki heard it and loved it so much that she asked Miku to write lyrics for it. While it starts sounding like an instrumental, the lyrics make it a lot of fun for the fans. You can tell the smile on all the members faces that they love performing this song. It's always fun to hear at one of their live concerts because it's so energetic.
Am I wrong in that I believe the instrumental version of this was originally meant as a song that Kanami put together as a Miku "homework" song with particular guitar techniques she needed to learn for future songs?
Don’t let anything stop you from seeing them live. Someday you will be called upon by the Ice Queen to “Mata!” And by the Pigeon to “Say!” It will be the most fun you’ve ever had at a concert 🤘🏽
@@wanderleyjesus6772 Oh yea, in the prechorus it’s “I know I can do it kitto (surely), I know I can do it motto (more)” But when Saiki yells at the crowd for their participation, she says, “Mata! Mata!” Which means “again!” 👍🏽
Believe it or not, this was originally written as an instrumental. The Ladies wanted to add it to their first full album, "Just Bring It", however their label said no. Saiki saw how much fun the others had while playing it, and asked Miku to write some lyrics for it. Supposedly Saiki tried to write some lyrics herself, but they didn't flow, so she fully pestered Miku to do it. And when Saiki goes to torment Akane to try to get her to laugh, Akane turned the tables and you can hear Saiki hold back a giggle while singing. And like I wrote on your reaction to Domination, you hear the last notes of Play ringing out at the end. Now you need to realize, taking Play and Domination, would you believe, that those 2 songs were the 21st and 22nd song of a 23 song set? They were. And the Ladies had that energy level throughout the entire concert. Although there are a few photos of them after the concert looking like soaked cats, you would never be able to tell from their performance.
Since, as pointed out in this reaction, we're getting towards the end of the 30 days of Band-Maid, I'm taking the opportunity to put in a plug for ending it with the song they ended the Yokohama Arena 10th anniversary show with: the very emotional live performance of Endless Story.
A fan favorite to be sure. There are a few variations on the intro. This is the MIKU version. There was a MISA MISA MISA version that was officially posted and is still my favorite. PLAY was originally written as an instrumental but Saiki liked it and asked MIKU to add lyrics. There is also a cool fanMAID lyric video ... floating around somewhere ;) . Fans love this band (and this song).
Such a fun song, love it! To me, this is a very unique song, the drums are just insane.. oh and I love the intro, really gets things going. Thanks for the reaction.
Wow, day 23 already...😬 Glad you said you will probably need to go over.👍 At 5:16, where you stopped, Saiki lose the game of Hengao (a game of weird/funny faces to get them to laugh so they mess up whatever they are doing) against Akane. You can hear Saiki hold back a giggle as she squats down in front of Akane. You should take a look again at it from about 2:30 in the original BM video. Love that they have so much fun on doing their live performances. Apparently that's why you see the other ladies ganging up on Akane on Domination, to try to get her back for beating Saiki. Akane is a BEAST!!!. PO!🕊 🤘😆🤘
I love Saiki/Miku call and response as much as the music itself. It's just ingenious that the way they do it to spice up the transition, right in the pocket, rhyming perfectly with the song, as if it was already a part of the song to start with.
The Zepp Tokyo LIVE version was even better. It had Fire! No really. Pyrotechnics. But you do get that intro in this version. And you can still hear that last chord of the outro at the beginning of 'Domination' LIVE.

They are always full of surprises. Especially Kanami. always utilizing the different genres into transitions that are interesting. She is a Genius.
