Why do you have the AIM-54 racks mounted when you are not carrying any? I thought they added weight and increased wing loading by disrupting the lifting body effect?
Fun fact: The F5s used in top gun as MIG28s retained their flat black/red star Hollywood paint schemes and continued to serve as aggresors until they were retired. One of them now lives in a little no name air museum outside of Clifton park NY... its parked next to an F14... have a pic of them. pretty cool.
Oh shit I’ve got some pics from there a family friend who was a crew chief on one of the Arctic c130’s there but I had no idea that that was actually one of the movie planes and now that I remember I need to go up there again and meet with him
Fly the Bf 109 and you'll get familiar with that swinging very quickly. Basically, the plane is in a state of uncoordinated flight(the nose is not pointing where the aircraft is actually moving towards) and on all the Fly By Wire jets the computer will correct for you. The F-14 is maybe the highest performing jet fighter that does not have a FBW computer... so you need two reeeeeeeaaaally sensitive and experienced feet on the rudder pedals to prevent this. More so in a Bf 109 with its really strong torque. If you can keep "the ball centered" during maneuvering in a109, preventing the wobble in the F-14 will feel like childs play. :)

Your adversary is one of the more impressive opponents I’ve seen you fly against. Despite being in a pretty inferior aircraft he made you work for those kills.
No joke, in the official Threat Guide the Air Force uses, in the "F-14A Tomcat Strengths and Weaknesses" table, listed as a strength: "Highly effective speedbrakes versus MiG-28"! I shit you not.
Exactly happened like how real life pilots ("you see 'em, you beat 'em") said usually F-14 vs F-5 should go. F-14 had every advantage over the MIG-28 on paper and would wipe the floor with the F-5 with equally well trained pilots, but I have heard an instructor in the F-5 and a student in the F-14 could make the F-5 difficult to beat for the student.
It was cool to see you flying one of my old squadrons. I was in VF-51 just after "Top Gun" was released. VF-51, and VF-124 to an extent, which I was attached to during the shooting of the movie; they did most of the grunt work for the movie. Did two cruises with the "Screaming Eagles;" '87 - '91, then back to VF-124. If you fly any Navy F-4J, or S, or N models, use VF-21 "Freelancers" colors. Did two cruises with them too, with the N variant, even though we started with J's, transitioned to S's, and had to retransition to N's, for work on the USS Coral Sea: '78 - 83. I was an AQ, through and through. (Until they made us all AT's.)
Some of the most remarkable days of my life were on Ike surrounded by f-14’s, A-6’a, A-7’s and finally the FA-18’s... but nothing hold my heart as much as the F-14. I was at the end of F-4 era... love that aircraft also.. but the F-14 on deck with the sun going down behind F-14’s is ethereal

Wow Grumman - Given the Tomcat's penchant for compressor stall and violent low airspeed departure, it would've at least been nice to have put an airspeed indicator into your HUD.
I would have to say that in 1988 an exercise between the USS Independence and the Chilean Air Force would have had mostly incompetent Tomcat pilots, because the F5 drivers gave them hell, with rules very similar to this video. Jeffrey Ethel wrote an article for Air Combat magazine at the time
Slower target trying to get you to overshoot: barrel roll around his flight path. You will go 5x distance that he does. Then you can keep power and speed up and stay behind him. (As long as he does not transition to rolling scissors with you so do this before you get beside him). Great videos, commentary, and debrief.
