- In this video, I head out for riverside walk with Maggie, the big black dog, to work up an appetite for breakfast. We find a nice secluded, shady spot beside the river and set about getting a fire going to cook up a tasty treat. I was recently sent some Aboriginal Australian ingredients from my friends Hari and Alana, and this was the ideal opportunity to try them out - ribeye steak, seasoned and cooked over the fire, damper - a simple tasty flat bread and Lemon Myrtle tea - deliciously refreshing on a hot day!
Thanks for watching!

Maggie, lovely Maggie….what a sweet and gentle soul…Thank you for sharing your times together..You were a wonderful Dad to her…🐶
I get dirt bikes past mine so often, I barely noticed it was on the video :) the intro reminded me of Jack walking his pony along the river and over the little foot bridges from Outta town.
This is an old video, but its nice to see Maggie. Such a sweetheart!
Almost a pommy Les Hiddins! 🤣🇦🇺
Simon, I think you’d love the old series of “Bushtucker Man” from decades ago. I don’t know if it’s available there but the are clips on RUclips. He was an Australian army officer who went out learning about native foods from aboriginal people, and then taught what he’d learned to our soldiers. For an officer in the Pongos, he’s not too bad… 😉
I love your show & Andy’s - love your dog ❤ Jane from Australia 🇦🇺
I've missed seeing Maggie's big, furry face. You're both looking well. Take care.
The only problem with this video, is I can only hit “like” once.
Thanks mate! 😁
😆
Another great video, good camera positioning making the whole Film entertaining, Thanks Ian
Thanks Ian. 👍
Perfect example of how a walk can be more than just a walk. Nice work, sir.
-Steve
Awesome, thanks Simon.
Simon a Chef in the Woods ........yummy food ...great video again of your equipment and Cooking.Loved the close ups of Maggie.... your videos are wonderful ,Thanks ......
damn.. love seeing your videos with maggie. the only problem im not there also. keep doing these videos and take good care of your dog. she is a good pup.
Never heard the dirt bike. Wouldn't have known it was there. Probably the cheap ear buds I'm using. Great video, you always make me hungry.
Glad Maggie got her share. She is such a good girl.
Mate... you make the world a nicer place to live. And you're an inspiration. Thank you. xx
Always such a pleasure to watch * Loved the Maggie close-ups. She is so majestic looking with her lions mane of fur.Thank you so much for continuing to share your passion & skills with us all. Sending well wishes *
Very cinematic video. It's like watching an artistic movie. Cheers mate.
Ach. after the day I've had, needed a bit of this. Cheers Simon
Looks “mouth watering “ delicious ❤️
Meat, Bread, Tea , a nice combination, that sauce made it special. Great fire anchor.
Good to see Maggie out and about 😃🤙🤙🤙
Your video's just make me happy.......
Bless old Maggi, it is lovely to look at your old videos while we wait for you to return in the Spring.
'Aussie as' maaayte🤠👍❗️Greetings from Friday afternoon in Oz. You got sent some top goods! Gotta pick those younger leaves from the lemon myrtle, otherwise they're overpowering & stong😋, there's a cinnamon myrtle too😍😋. Nice use of a wider-angle lens on the bridge to give that 'converging-lines' effect 🎥 , top of the weir shot was pretty awesome too😎👍. Loving that ironmongery as well 👏👏👏. 😵giant hogweed flower in the closing sequence😲
Thanks mate!! I’m going to see if I can get some cinnamon myrtle - sounds lush! 👍🇦🇺
YOUR MAGGIE IS A NEWFOUNDLANDer !!!! 👍 Maggie you are an absolute a BEAUTY !
I was a vegetarian for 17 years... before I started to get interested in bushcrafting and watched video's like this. :p
Another great video keep them coming and great to see Maggie out with you be safe
Wish you were on the tv never mind youtube. Keep up the good work 👍
Anyone else’s mouth start watering when simon cut into that steak (just off to the butchers)
I'm not sure who was drooling more, me or my dog.
Simon just a little advice on cooking a traditional Aussie damper mate.Being a kid from the bush I started work at 14 as a billy boy and general rusabout for a gang of fencing contractors camped out in the bush. The billy tea had to brewed and dampers cooked by 10am sharp for smoko otherwise a sore arse would be felt. To cook dampers to produce a nice crust, they would be laid directly on a bed of ashes, just like you've got there and a layer of ashes were racked over to completely cover them. I usually did 6 to 8 at a time, depending how many blokes were going to have smoko (morning tea time, and a smoke). it usually took 10 to 12 minutes for them to cook. Take the dampers out the ashes, give them a good dusting over and they were serviced broken (not cut) into pieces with some Golden Syrup poured over and washed down with tea that only a billy over an open fire can produce. Billies were made from an empty Sunshine Powdered milk tin that held about 4 litres with a piece of fencing wire for a handle. There was no lid and the tea took on a smoked Eucalytus flavour. If we were in Narrow Leafed Ironbark country, I'd throw a couple of crushed up Ironbark leaves in the billy water a few minutes before it boiled. This gave the tea a really nice soothing Eucalyptus flavour. There were no Lemon Myrtle gum trees growing in our area. As soon as the billy started a rolling boil (not before), measure out loose tea leaves in a cupped hand (about two tablespoons full to 4 litres of water) chuck the tea leaves in the water and IMMEDIATELY, grab the billy by the handle and swing it in a circular motion 3 times overhead then stop and watch the tea leaves roll over in the billy. This steeped the tea ready to drink. So fresh hot dampers, Golden Syrup, freshly brewed billy tea, and a roll your own fag (no tailor made fags in the bush those days, as every bloke had his own tin of Log Cabin fine cut tabacco, and cigarette papers) meant there were a mob of happy blokes having smoko.Who could want more. If I stuffed up anything, it was a guaranteed number 8 (hob nailed boot size) in the arse. Smoko was a ritual. All gone now though after 55 years.
Simon, great to see Maggie, nice music to start, truly love your videos, I didn't know that you and Kent survival did a video together, I'm watching that tonight, also I bought a sewing machine because of you, you've made sewing cool sir, I know I'll be rubbish but what the heck. First Nations gift from Australia, awesome, man that steak looked good, it's not even my dinner time yet and I'm hungry now, never cooked a damper myself but I will try it, cheers.
This is not damper, though. It's an Englishman's version. Real damper is cooked in the coals and is like a giant, hard cake/scone. Great hot with lots of cold butter. You can even toss a few saltanas in for the sweet relief.
Simon and Andy have done quite a few videos together! They are all awesome. ☺️
If you like dampers, I suggest what we call "biscuits" in the US. Made almost the same way, but cut into circles. Lots of recipes on the internet. When camping, I use a trick, just mix self rising flour and heavy cream, don''t measure, just eyeball it. Mix the dough in a plastic bag, then pinch off some roll it into a ball, and smash flat before baking.
dogzilla100 - I'm pretty sure a lot of the uninitiated from English speaking nations see 'biscuits & gravy' on the menu and picture something likely to be served up the movie 'Oliver'!🤣. It's great American, early settler, hearty food!😍😋👍❗️💯‼️
Thanks mate - hope you enjoy the other ones too - we did a 5 day canoe trip in Sweden which was awesome fun!
Simon, so great to see you and Maggie out and about! That walk looked very therapeutic with a great breakfast thrown in. Thanks for sharing!
Nice lunch out mate :) and some nice peace and quiet too
Cheers matey! Nice except for that bloody dirt bike! 😂😂😂
Great video. That steak with the sauce looked tasty! Like seeing Maggie . Always love your choice of music.
Santalum acuminatum is the Quandong tree (pronounced Kwon dong) desert tree from my neck of the woods in Australia
Beautiful video and great to see Mags out and about. I've made Aussie dampers in the camp oven, some sweet, some savory. Nice and simple like that perfect looking steak. Thanks for another escape to the countryside.
I revisited this video because of beautiful Maggie ❤ she was certainly Simon's best companion!
great video, you should come to the States and do some camping
That bite of steak shot with the Chili lime sauce instantly made my mouth water!
And I giggled, because the dirt bike noises sounded like you enjoying your food & giving out healthy toots.😋 🤣🤭💨
Haha - that’s why I put in the #dirtbike tags - I needed a cover up!
YOU ARE THE BEST BLOKESTER SIMON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ANOTHER GREAT ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! KEEP EM COMIN BRO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Damper cooked Aussie style is usually done in a camp oven (Dutch 0ven) and the dough rise is very good with a browned crust on top. For added flavour I add some raisins or chopped dried apricots. The result is yummy. Great times you have. My mantra -- What makes you happy, DO THAT!
Thanks mate - I’m going to try it in a Dutch oven. 👍
All the camping/bushcraft books I had as a child suggested spiral wrapping around a stick and toasting over the fire, for style points alone that wins
Nice one Simon and Maggie. So glad you liked the taste of Australia 🇦🇺 in the English country side. Cheers mate.
Grey way to wrap up my day. Thanks Simon
Nice to see Maggy again👍

Great video, looks like the perfect breakfast!!!
Lovely cook on a beautiful day next to the river!!!
Chilli Steak for breakfast! You Sir are a proper Aristocrat.
Love that fire Anchor, simple yet perfect.
Nice video mate, just sat watching you from South Australia drinking a cold beer the steak looked awesome. Looks like Kentish woodland your in there? Cant beat a good Aussie blended steak mix I live an hour from the Murray river 👍😎🇦🇺
Thanks mate! It’s Norfolk rather than Kent, but similar in some ways. 👍👍
Wonderful as always!!!
Simon Great vid aka Les Hiddins the bushtucker man 👍👍🤙🤙🤙

What is not to love about that dog?! 😉🇨🇦
Thank you for another great video showing how good cooking can be in the great outdoors! Cheers from the Colonies!!
Bravo! Loved it all, even nap time.
I find watching your video's so relaxing and enjoyable to watch.
Your videos are some of the most relaxing on youtube.
Thank you!
Absolutely gorgeous! I loved the fire anchor! Good to see you two beautiful souls are doing well! :)
Always nice to see you out and about with "The Mag™" ... Thanks for taking us along on the walk Simon.
Delightful video as always.
It doesn't get much better than that! Thanks for sharing!
Your dog has good food manners. The minute we sit down to eat a steak at our house our Corgi is like a vampire who hasn't eaten in 100 years - she's a shocker. I can't blame her though, the Wagyu and Angus steaks are bloody beautiful.
Another nice meal dude, great to see you and maggie ;) peace
For tea's you should use a spoon full or two but that'll make like 3 cups..... FYI wild garlic bread is definitely worth a go next time they're in season.....or just go grab a bag of mix-in's from the flour isle in the supermarket because that works a treat
Hey, Simon, great to see you both out and about again. Your cooking videos are the bees knees - an inspiration!! Puts my own steak cooking on the campfire to shame. Keep it up mate! Love it when a new film notification hits home! Soooo want a steak right now! Right...into the woods!
Very cool! Thanks for sharing!
Australia, Australia, Australia, we love you, amen.
Steak for brekkie. Youre the man. Lovely video, thank you for taking us along 😁.
