I have always said that I prefer this concerto (and Hummel's) played on a b-flat trumpet rather than an e-flat trumpet. This is because of the thinner sound of the higher pitched trumpet. However, this is the most spectacular version I have ever heard on an e-flat trumpet. Andre has the most beautiful tone on this little trumpet. Not thin at all. He is without a doubt the greatest.
I used to play this concerto a lot when I was young, never close to this type of performance though. It's absolutely stunning. It has some technical parts which are difficult to get through but most of it is just beautiful trumpet playing which is why I love this concerto.
@@jarekluberek8123 right. It is a piece that is commonly played in high school or college. A large part of this concerto is not technically difficult. However, the challenging sections are what separates the wheat from the chaff.
The reason I took up the trumpet and have such passion for classical music is because of this wonderful musician. Mourice Andre was, and will forever be, a treasure.
I love the way he looks like he has just come down for breakfast, found an orchestra in his garden and picked his trumpet up to play. The right balance of effortlessness and indulgence
On comprend pourquoi.
A master of the trumpet whose interpretations were always sublime - tasteful, controlled, powerful and yet sensitive to the emotional nuances and soulfulness of some of the most beautiful music ever written. Thank you Maurice.
I heard him play LIVE at the Masonic Auditorium in 75. Program 1. Haydn all 3 mvts. 2. Hummel-all 3 mvts. 3. Loeillet- Concert Sonata in D-all 4 Mets. Encore: Heroic Music- Telemann I didn't blink for a long while! Michael McClary
Adesso sicuramente sarai in Paradiso a suonare insieme agli angeli.
Usually in classical music debate rages about those gone before, who was the greatest etc, how would the current crop compare, eg the legend of Paganini with the violin, virtuosi we never heard that unfortunately passed before recording was available. I think in Maurice Andre we are blessed to have had the greatest trumpet player so far, in our time. The man is peerless on this instrument. And he gets my vote as being maybe one of the top ten instrumentalists of all time.
honestly this was one of the worst versions of haydn i have ever heard maurice was a god in his time but i think comparing him to the soloists of today its just clear that he was impressive back then bc people didnt really know how to play the trumpet and he knew how to play it
Well, my rating of Andre is not based solely on this performance. He had a presence and an aura to go with his virtuosity. For you to say he was impressive only because he was the only one who could do it? I dont get drawn into internet feuding, so I will just say I find i disagree.
When you hear him play you think :" oh it's easy, i'm gonna do it too"...until you try it. Then you realize there are good trumpetists, very good trumpetists, excellent trumpetists, and there's Maurice Andre.
In the 70's, my music teacher invited me to a concert of Maurice Andre. For me, this was an unsurpassed privilege and this evening and my music teacher have a place in my memory forever!
He was supreme in this genre, his tone and virtuosity unsurpassed, perfection really. He had the supreme ability to master all trumpets in any key with equal tone: this is an Eflat, but could be a C for its tone. He made the most difficult seem effortless.
Maurice Andre always had this certain swag about him - almost like he's showing off how easy it is to play a trumpet. I'd imagine he once had an eight year old student who said something to the effect of 'trumpet is hard.' and Maurice said no it's not! then plays this sitting in a lounge chair, doesn't break a sweat.
Brilliantly sublime... hearing/seeing this performance literally welled my eyes, for multiple reasons... one of them related to bringing my late father to a live intimate performance by Maurice Andre of this concerto in a beautiful cathedral setting in Zurich... now my warmest classical concert memory.
When I was i child my mother took me to a lokal wedding in a small church nearby her i Vaerloese near Copenhagen. And guess who played. Maurice André! I will never forget. Carsten Konow, Denmark
As much as I like Tine Thing Helseth and Alison Balsom, I've never heard Maurice Andre surpassed on this piece. What big, round tones he produces and the brilliance of the sound is wonderful. No comment necessary about his embouchure. I'm genuinely sorry he's gone now.
118 dislikes? Who in the world would dislike this great trumpet player. I played this song for one of my recitals, and it's no easy piece I can assure you. Wow! What a great player. The accelerando in the cadenza gave me chills. He must be been triple tounging there. I'm very impressed. I wonder what other work he's done. I'm going to do some research. He played without a single mistake and with amazing tone. That classical trumpet sound give me chills. I do wonder why he's not playing am E flat trumpet like this piece was written for by Haydn. It looks like he's using a C trumpet. Still what a great job.
If you see the fingerings you will understand that he was playing on an E flat trumpet. In fact some manufacturers build E flat trumpets that are looking more like a D or a C trumpet, for example the 6610s by yamaha or the 189 or AE190 by Bach.
I was privileged enough to listen to him several times in Munich, back in the 70s, even not as a soloist but with two others playing Bach´s Christmas Oratorio, conducted by Karl Richter. Lifetime memories!

@@jarekluberek8123 right. It is a piece that is commonly played in high school or college. A large part of this concerto is not technically difficult. However, the challenging sections are what separates the wheat from the chaff.
I agree but the third movement is really challenging to manage with a b flat trumpet because the fingering is quite difficult compared to e flat
You can still play with a bigger sound on Eb
The reason I took up the trumpet and have such passion for classical music is because of this wonderful musician. Mourice Andre was, and will forever be, a treasure.

C'EST UN VRAI RÉGAL DE L'ÉCOUTER ET DE LE VOIR JOUER . 👍 ❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏❤️
I just want to hug this chubby Frenchman, he has made my night with his fantastic playing.

only the best are are admitted to the Munich Symphonic Orchestra, and André is definitely the best classical trumpetist!
