How We Feed Sheep And Lambs Using Our Own Rations

- At Ewetopia Farms, we feed all our sheep and lambs using our own rations made with ingredients grown on our farm and in consultation with a local feed nutritionist. On our sheep farm, it is about keeping things as low cost and simple to implement as possible, and this includes feeding sheep. There are no magic recipes involved. It's about using quality ingredients that you have available and feeding it based on the sheeps' needs at their specific time of the year. Today, we show how we are feeding sheep in the fall months when we have various groups of sheep indoors as pasture grazing decreases and more sheep have to eat at the feeders. Our sheep groups at the moment include mature rams, breeding sheep, replacement lambs, and dry ewes, so there are a few different feed rations we need to implement, including a new creep ration for the lambs. We are not saying every sheep farmer should feed how we do. We are saying that farmers should make rations themselves, if possible, to decrease feed bills and to monitor your flocks condition, and make ration adjustments accordingly.

Of all the sheep farming channels on RUclips, you are the best. Having a critical question and waiting for the answer has been turned into direct criticism. Some people just need to stay in their own lane. I appreciate you showing us your best practices and the hardships that come with them. Farming is so much more than a video ànd i think you do a great job of expressing that. Though it's a mute point now, who cares how long you give a lamb milk? It's your time and money, and it's not abusing the animals. I can't farm like I used to, and watching your videos helps fill that void. So, thank you for sharing your life with us. ❤

To speak negatively about a picture when you have no background information is just ignorance!! I trust that you have given both those boys everything they have needed to help them thrive. Failure to Thrive can really interfere with the young animals growth. Once an animals growth is stunted the damage is done. I support you in your decisions Lynn!! I'm sorry you got criticized for bottle feeding for too long when you had no other choice. It's too bad that Little Mister traps himself under the feeder like that, i wonder why but you are always pretty patient which is necessary in that situation. You only started using wrapped bales a few years ago. What did you do before? You don’t have enough shed space for 400 4’ bales.
Did you have a loft full of silly bales? Are silly dry bales easier to make than 4’ dry bales?
In the past, we did have the old barn full of little squares plus dry round bales that yes, we do have enough storage for. However, that hay was mostly grasses which dry better. When we switched to wrapped when we started adding alfalfa, we actually hired a guy to come here and do it. After a few years of trying to make that work, he finally bought his own wrapper. Custom work is okay for lots of jobs but for hay which is extremely time and weather sensitive, it just didn't work well at all.

They go in our sheds and lean-tos but we actually did have an upper loft at the back of the old barn too. Small squares went in the main barn loft @alisoncummins2726

we are about too getting our rams ready for tupping here in the uk most of the sheep farmers here will put the tups in around november then we will get lambs around end of february too end of april then lambs are sold by june

@@EwetopiaFarms a majority of sheep kept are are usually crossbreds usually a cross of scottish black face cross suffolks but we have wensleydales,cheviots,suffolks ,lleyns a welsh breed small but easily handling and dorsets we have wilshire short horns

So sorry your getting unwanted advice about your bottle feeding, both those lambs needed a little extra TLC, which you recognized. On another farm, they would not have survived. That’s the difference, it’s called compassion for animals. Your feeding ration is very interesting. I wish I had Arnie to make up my rations lol. I tend to stick to pellets as I’m not brave enough to feed that much corn. I’ve had the odd ewe and lamb bloat, so that has scared me off. They also choke on a finer ration, I think my sheep are gluttons though🤣I give my ewes a 36% pellet mixed with whole corn and whole barley when they are closer to lambing and then post lambing. But literally only 2 cups per ewe per day.
Believe me, Suffolks would put Dorpers to shame in the gluttony category!🤣🤣 To each his own. It is always what works on your farm, and your animals look great! I still have to go visit. Maybe a Wandering Shepherds/Ewetopia Farms trip?!?
