Thank you for the tip to warm tire up in hot water. struggled for 15 minutes with getting nowhere, I used a silicone brake lubricant and changed 2 of them out in about 6 mins. Thank you

      2) without any lubricant

Many thanks for your video. When i purchased the new tires I was convinced they were too small and was going to return them. I also would have fitted them back to front!
It took two of us to get them on!!! Steve in UK.

THANK YOU! This is the same actual mower and actual tyre I bought. I couldn’t figure out how to get it on and as I’ve bought the wrong replacement wheels three times before, my wife said “just replace the whole mower”, so I’m gonna try this and see how I get on.

So i thought this was going to maybe be a 5 minute job. HA!! Here i am! Thanks for the tips.
Edit - Got this done today, 10 minute job tops. Heat gun + auto grease + big flat head. Turned the mower on its side. Muscled it on like you showed, the grease really helped, was able to manhandle it on the wheel and use the screwdriver to pop the bead.

It’s interesting that the complete new wheels are $24 on Amazon as of today, and yet replacement wheels for the HRX217 (complete with steel wheel bearings) are less than $20 at Home Depot.

Got mine on without the vise grips or the vise. Boiled water on the stove. Toss the tire in after taking it off the stove. No PB blaster but used two screw drivers and a lot of determination. Got to get mad at it and go for it. Stretch that rubber by taking big "bites" with the screw drivers. In other words after planting the tire rim into the tire take 3 or more inches at a time around the circumference. You might think the rubber will break or the rim because of the force your putting on the screw drivers. I had mind on in less than a minute. After giving up a number of times I said "f , it" and went after it with a vengence. Done.

You ever try to change these? They are tough especially for such a dinky tire. I can change me rear zero turn tires by hand with about the same amount of effort.

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop 7 лет назад

No I am too financially tight. I replace them with used ones. Honda parts are so expensive up here in Canada that I change them out.

OK well years later I am watching this in my garage and totally understand now. The total tire (rear is way over $140. This is my first encounter changing just the rubber Thanks Bob. ---I used c clamps.

I ended up retreading my TroyBilt mower tires using mountain bike tire tread (trimmed down), adhesive and some screws. Less than $30 in total.

Good job. Wrenches for bike tires would help. Also, it's a shame the tires cost more than the entire set of wheels, at least for the 216.

Thanks, Bob. I love my Honda mower (on my 2nd one actually,) but the parts can be expensive so I can see how this could come in handy down the road.

The Hondas always sell fast for me. There mulching ability is the best I have actually used even with tall grass.

there is a new style tire cover(probably the plastic wheels) and an older style tire cover for the HRC216K1 with aluminum wheels. I was able to get 4 old style tire covers from a supplier for $44 shipped. Only doing this as a restoration of those old-style aluminum wheels for a mower restoration. Interesting that the new plastic wheels will replace the old metal aluminum wheels and work fine as well on the old HRC216K1 mower.

You need safety glasses if you are going to use a screwdriver like that, maybe even a bullet proof vest. High cringe factor early in the installation. Great videos, I've learn a great deal.

Back in my dirt bike days I hated replacing tires. I would rather have pulled the engine than screw with tire replacement. It's more of a pain in the ass than people think. My 2 cents.

the more things change, the more they stay the same,,, many many years ago lots of mower tires could be changed like the one your are doing, but I guess in most cases now,, the whole wheel assembly is cheap enough few companies do this .

Is that right, 22 for the entire wheel and 18 for the cover alone? II love fixing things but for that small difference (and the strenuous effort) I think i'd pop for the wheel and hub. Great video though as usual. A You Tuber called dial2fast has had success with a really cheap way to retread. Kinda neat. Claims that it is still working several years later. Here's the link:

I love my Honda mower, but this wheel style is totally fucked up. Not all of us are this guy's age, build or have his tools. I ended up buying the entire wheel, as I don't have a $25 pair of vise-grips or a $50 vise along with muscular arms to complete this task.
Come on Honda, get rid of this shitty wheel style. Even cheap-ass lawnmowers have wheels that last the life of the lawnmower. What a scam!
Many thanks to the young man who took the time to share this vid with instructions for people who have the tools and strength to replace their own wheel covers.

Man if you weren't so 'greedy' & took smaller 'bites' you'll have much less chance of damaging the wheel like that! Apart from aesthetics, Why is it so critical to have tread anyway?! Do you have huge slopes or something?!
