John Stafford McMillin (October 28, 1855 - November 3, 1936) was an American lawyer, businessman and political figure. Born in Sugar Grove, Indiana, McMillin attended DePauw University and became a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He practiced law in Lafayette before moving to Washington Territory, where he became the president and general manager of the Tacoma Lime Company, a limeworks. In 1886, McMillin and his partners in the Tacoma Lime Company bought Roche Harbor, Washington, and incorporated the Tacoma and Roche Harbor Lime Company, of which McMillin again served as president and general manager. McMillin built the Hotel de Haro in Roche Harbor, and became involved in politics. He ran for the United States Senate in 1895, served as a member of the Washington state railroad commission, and was a delegate to the Republican National Convention from Washington in 1924 and 1932. He was also an ardent Freemason.
My goodness.....I would have to say that to go to these lengths to send a message to his son, he must've been a deeply bitter man! It's such a shame that people let differing religious beliefs tear their families apart. Very, very sad.
I saw a bunch of comments saying the outcasted 5th child is just a rumor. So I went over to wikipedia and it says John McMillan only had 4 children, so uhhhh lol there is that
From Wikipedia: “Around the table are thick stone chairs not only representing the members of the McMillin family, but actually containing their ashes and acting as headstones. This was meant to represent the family dinner table that the McMillins would gather around. There seems to be an empty space at the table and it is said that this was meant to represent the McMillin son who turned away from Methodism.”
@@tsunfish9443 I looked on Wikipedia and I don't see the excerpt that daVideo4 referenced. Not saying that it was never on there, but I don't see it. John lived from 1855 to 1936. I would suspect that we could find something of his existence if he did have a 5th child. But I haven't be able to find any proof of such. Supposedly, the Afterglow Vista has a lot of symbolism, including Masonic symbolism. It is possible that the broken column was meant to represent just that. That the broken column represents the unfinished work in a mans life.

I'm starting to wonder what old cement business lords actually knew of material science... There's a mansion in Doylestown PA that was built by a dude called Mercer who also owned a big cement company. He built his dream mansion and the downtown museum out of cement because he believed in it so much, and like those buildings get pretty dang hot in the summer XD still honestly a cool mansion tho, and I don't think he was as bitter as this McMillan dude. I think he also had another mansion built several streets away (not out of cement) for his brother too

Peeved because his son married outside the Methodist faith? I’m Methodist and that is sooo not a thing nowadays…one Protestant religion is really no different from the other. Even Jews and Catholics, who have a long history of wanting to marry within their own faith, are more relaxed about that now. Besides, the girl he married could have become Methodist. I think there’s more to this story…and maybe it’s not what the girl wasn’t, but what she was that the old man didn’t like. Either way, he was an ass build this thing.

The Island is called San Juan Island. The ferry landing is located at Friday Harbor but the mausoleum is located closer to Roche Harbor on the Island.
How sad that he used his burial place as an angry message to his son.
Best revenge: the “5th son” knows nothing of this monument and had a happy life😛

Why leave this earth "bitter"! Forgive, then you may go in peace!
True words we all can learn from.
Methodists , Anglicans with a hard unforgiving edge .
Wow this beautiful, but creepy.
Why is that creepy

Big Daddy was savage!
😭😭 SO SAD.
Hey, look. It's raining in Washington.
There was no 5th child. People just make things up to explain things and in time it becomes "fact".
John mcmillin had a mistress that was pregnant with his 5th child. She hung herself inside the room upstairs of the now mcmillin restaurant.
I’ve been there several times. Creepy
He's dead. What good did all that do?
If there is a missing son, what is his name? All the other children are named, and I haven't seen anything about a fifth child..
It hasn't yet. You would think if that was true, fifth child's name would be on the internet.
scott twofer No other son, all the kids are buried there.
Ok...that's pretty cool....a bit petty....but then again....it was 85yrs ago. And today...this would be about $589,215.11 to build...
don't you mean san juan island and not Friday harbor island?
correct...san juan
No you see the San jaun islands are orcas Lopez and Friday harbor so this island is called Friday harbor
as someone who lives in Friday Harbor....it is San Juan island. Friday Harbor is the "town" there are over 200 islands in the San Juans, many un named
Wow!
That is very sad.....
