  • Based on the best-selling novel by Otfried Preussler, KRABAT AND THE LEGEND OF THE SATANIC MILL is a dark but uplifting adventure for all ages, KRABAT combines fantasy with enchantment and allure.
Medieval Europe has been devastated by the Thirty Years War and the plague. KRABAT (DAVID KROSS -- The Reader, War Horse), a fourteen year old orphan lives on the margins of society, travelling from village to village to beg out a meagre existence. Life is relentlessly grim, until Krabat's dreams direct him to a remote mill. The master of the mill keeper offers him the chance to stay, and KRABAT readily accepts only to find himself drawn into a world of magic and dark arts. His new found powers are intoxicating but fellow apprentice Tonda (DANIEL BRUHL -- Inglorious Basterds, The Edukators) warns him to leave. As dark secrets are revealed, the mood becomes menacing and KRABAT knows escape is the only answer. Only by enlisting the help of a girl unaware of the secrets of the dark mill can he hope to elude the forces of Evil...but is it too late? Can the power of love alone be enough to eradicate the power of black magic?

This was the first book I ever read of my own free will and I Ioved it. I was probably 10 years old and I'm sure my older sister bought it. I had seen it lying around the house in Ireland many times and the cover eventually enticed me enough to make me pick it up and start reading it. I really want to read it again now, especially as I live in a country full of windmills now!

I've finally had the chance to see this film. Very well executed, although it is impossible to fit the entire book into the time given. As many critics have mentioned, the quarter staff fight scene was unnecessary. My guess is that the makers felt the need to keep up with other big budget efforts and therefore inserted this bizarre ninja style battle. The original idea, where they just ridicule the army, would have worked better. O.Preussler RIP.

I loved this film. Saw in in cinemas 5 times. But the english synchro just honestly doesn't sound good. Especially the american accents sound out of place. Thank god I got to see the original

@@vinkywink No, it's a sorbian legend. This legend takes place in sorbian Lausitz (nowadays south east Germany), in a land with swamps, rivers and small hills, not in the mountains. The boys would have talked to each other in sorbian language (slavonic language) and if you pay attention to the names of the protagonists, they are almost all Sorbians (the boys names end on "o", the girls names end on "a"). Krabat is the exception, because this name stems indeed from "Hrovat", the Croatian! This has something to do with the 30 Years War (first half of the 17th century) where croation cavallery was in the region. The original legend is even more mystical than the movie because the Germans in the next village and town wouldn't have understand what the sorbian people in the black mill were talking about so they assumed they maybe practice magic with a secret magical book. There is also a beautiful scene in the movie where the girls from the village go to the well during easter night to collect water. This reflects a sorbian custom and this water was considered to have magic abilities. But there was an obstacle: on your way to the well and back home the girls had to be silent, if one broke the silence (cry out of fear, laugh or talk) the water lost its magic. In the movie, in the easter night scene, you see only girls, except of invisible Krabat and his friend who try to avoid to spook the girls with their presence,. This is a small hint to this old sorbian custom.

DAVID KROSS has made a lot of films. He's incredibly handsome full face but not at all in profile. Good actor though and that is what really matters.

Eh... Too spectacular. The pace of the book is different. Its atmosphere is different. And those crow sounds... I don't know. In my language they turn into ravens. Ravens are so much nobler than crows. Dunno. I'm just going to stay with the book.
