    I really wish more vocal coaches would help with screaming as well as singing. The fact that the Melissa is an older woman makes me have extreme respect for her teaching screaming effectively.

      dude, when you study opera you do a loooot of different voice exercises, you also need a lot of different sounds to perform XXI contemporary pieces.. so I feel this woman is more about sound/expression than "screaming".

  • @angryktulhu
    @angryktulhu 3 года назад +2

    Okay, I must say she was an extremely great teacher in the past and she literally invented lotta tricks and techniques but come on people, things have gone way further since those times. FC screams and growls are pretty much the same technique with just a few minor differences. Not even saying that FC screams actually have nothing in common with false cords, as the distortion is produced by cartilages there, which are bigger than false cords and give that signature lower rumbling distortion VS the smoother white-noise-like distortion produced by false cords (think fry screams). There's even laryngoscopy videos proving that, finding a good one that shows everything is just a matter of like 15 mins

    I love her ... but you can hear how the excess pressure under the folds has weakened her speaking voice considerably ... I would like to see some real research into how she can 'safely' teach this ... just like Cathrin Sadolin what they're doing is fantastic I love the sounds but show me the actual research that's says .... 1) this is EXACTLY how I am making the sound physiologically and 2) why it is safe. People should be pursuing the research into these methods!

    • @TheCHMontgomery
      @TheCHMontgomery 7 лет назад +1

      ANB Aaron Newland-Bentley Agreed. Her voice sounds unnaturally raspy. It's easy for her to claim something along the lines of "I teach proper technique" when she's already an established vocal coach and the first one to become fairly well known for incorporating harsh vocal styles. A claim, regardless of an obvious level of professionalism and at least some understanding of the mechanics, doesn't mean absolution in regards to perfection of the craft.

    • @HogFlamboli
      @HogFlamboli 7 лет назад +13

      It could be because of her age. She has gotten noticeably older, and it's possible that these techniques are harsher on weaker folds. It also only seems like her fries are what are raspy, her talking voice sounds fine. I'm not saying research shouldn't be done, I'm just saying it may not be as big of an issue.

  • @x0scimy0x

    1:40 I don't really get that part. Why is she trying to change his pronunciation? Bouack just sounds weird.

    • @iconoclastic-fantastic
      @iconoclastic-fantastic 7 лет назад +9

      Diction is an important part of singing/screaming. She's making sure his sound is more forward in position, and furling your lips like that aids in this as well (especially for this style of vocalization). This ensures that the listener can clearly hear what the vocalist is saying without having to go back and look up lyrics, because the nature of the scream makes their words/pronunciation muffled. Pronouncing "back" like "bouack" produces a more crisp sound like that can more easily cut through the texture of the rest of the music around him without sounding as muffled in tone. It sounds weird without the rest of the band to back him up, but in context it makes a WORLD of difference. Crisp diction is what you want in any vocal style! It sounds better AND you can actually understand what is being said. (Classically trained voice student here- if there are any other professionals here, please correct anything I got wrong).
