If you can't join 'em, beat 'em! When his long-time dance partner abandons him for the Ziegfeld Follies, Don Hewes decides to show who's who what's what by choosing any girl out of a chorus line and transforming her into a star. So he makes his choice and takes his chances. Of course, since Fred Astaire portrays Don and Judy Garland plays the chorine, we know we're in for an entertainment sure thing.

I love that, at the film's end, it is Judy chasing Fred (sort of), instead of the other way around. The "just like a man" comment is downright sassy, but also refreshingly confident, which we do not normally see in a Garland character. And, of course, the song is magnificent.

Love this version of the song! It is a bit jazzier than the original. Clifton Webb's original recording in 1932 really captures the Easter spirit. Church bells and all!
when I was in first grade we put on a skit in class where the class had to sing this and all the girls came out of a cake. I just realized this song came from this movie. I am now 58 years old and never knew that until just now.

This song was written by Irving Berlin long before 1948. I believe Bing Crosby even sung this song about 7 years before .

I told Lisa Stokke, the Norwegian voice of Elsa in "Frost", when she started out back in 1994, that I thought she was born to perform, just like Judy Garland. She loved that compliment and gave me a hug, he, he.

The only thing I hate in this movie is that weird brown dress she wears earlier in the film. In this scene she looks the best, but of course, I suppose that is the point. At thirteen, I lamented her rejection of Peter Lawford as I found him so attractive, but love is love. I finally get that now lol.

Did you know this film was originally intended to be a vehicle to reteam Garland with Gene Kelly? After Kelly broke his ankle early in the rehearsals, producer Arthur Freed had to scramble to find a replacement - Fred Astaire.
Personally, I’ve never been a fan of the idea that Garland is romantic with such an older man. It was almost as satisfying to have them walk off into the sunset, Liza in hand… thoughts?
I love Fred Astaire, though I will concede that due to his very slight frame & bald head, he always looked MUCH MUCH older than his years
