    Hi, love your aquariums.
    I have 4 East Coast Gold Madagascar Cichlid (Ptychochromis Grandidieri). They are just over a year. How do you sex them? I can’t find any info. Thanks

    • @Riffwaters
      @Riffwaters  15 дней назад +1

      @@cding2172 Great question! Unfortunately they're difficult to sex. There are no color or body shape differences. Even size isn't very helpful. Females on average are smaller, but I've had some females just as big as males. The only definitive method is to catch them in the act of breeding, and see which one lays the eggs. It took 2-3 years to sex my own grandidieri and select down to two proven pairs.

    Are the blue labs the same as the clown labs?

    • @Riffwaters
      @Riffwaters  19 дней назад +1

      @@LEWYSTYLE Great question! They look very similar, but current classifications have them as separate species. And I also see minor differences in the barring. Zebra Labs (what I called Blue in the video) is the common name for L. caeruleus, and were actually the first color morph of caeruleus to be described, in 1956. Caeruleus actually means "Blue" in Latin. So the Yellow Labs everyone knows and loves were identified later and found to be the same species as these. The Clown Labs (L. chisumulae) were described in 1982, and someone much smarter than me found them to be different than caeruleus. All that said, sometimes even the ichthyologist make mistakes. After all, Lundo and Chizumulu Islands are pretty close to each other in Lake Malawi. So you never know.
