-you should probably read the book.
    Agreed.
I was almost depressed after moving to a new city and having to work everyday leaving little to no time for "recreation/social interaction".
I got the audiobook and wow from the first day I was just laughing out loud at the sub or tearing up out of joy or empathy.
    What a fantastic read.
I think this confirms my idea that there's a new generation of writers that are becoming so good at "audiobook adequate" narration style, that as an audiobook they just feel like something else.
The book is amazing but the narrator also did a fantastic job in bringing it to life, check that out too.

The best yet. Hail Mary is close to the perfect science-based story, for me anyway. Ray Porter is perfect for the audiobook, as he was in the Dennis Taylor " Bobiverse". And speaking audiobooks, RC Bray was perfect on The Martian. I enjoyed Wil Wheaton's Martian read as well. Looking forward to more " Hail Marys"! Great job!

Loved the book, but there were two things, as a high school biology teacher, I found to be inaccurate. First, most teachers swear a lot, just usually not in front of students. Second, biology and physics are polar opposites in many ways and a microbiologist might not know some of the intricate details of physics that Grace knew. That being said, I loved the overly complicated ways that he solved some problems when a simpler solution existed (E.g. 26), as that is quite common for science teachers who are trying to demonstrate a concept with whatever materials they have on hand.

    • @LeutnantJoker
      @LeutnantJoker 3 года назад +4

Well Grace didn't start out as a teacher. he was in academia in the sciences and only became a science teacher because of his paper. And he's a science teacher, not just a biology teacher. he repeatedly says stuff like "As a science teacher you know that when you have a spectrum hanging on the wall" and stuff like that. Seems to me he also teaches physics as well as biology at the school. His question about light speed to the class was after all a physics question.

@@_BobaFett_ coincidentally, this is probably a great book to help you get back into reading. It’s a really fast read and full of suspense and humour. I was laughing aloud a lot while reading this one. Either way, I hope you find your way back into reading ☺️

Why doesn't Hail Mary explode when subjected to 29 atmospheres?

When was it ever subjected to 29 atmospheres? Rocky built his own tunnels which were made out of his own special material. The ship's hull never had to contain 29 atmospheres.

Celebrities who could play Ryland if this were a movie:
    1. Jeff Goldblum?
    2. Andrew Garfield… hm
    3. John David Washington
    4. Joseph Gordon-Levitt?

I run an analyitcal facility at university in Switzerland and I read this book along with a few friends, also scientists. We thought it was pretty bad to be honest. The descriptions of how scientists think and work is just so incorrect that it was difficult for us to suspend our disbelief. The concept of a washed up academic (because he wrote a paper that was controversial....nah not buying that) suddenly being thrown, alone, into a random lab and entrusted to analyse a new form of life, and then communicate the results to a historian, is ridiculous. And it only goes downhill from there.

Uh.. did you finish the book actuall? And when did he communicate the results to a historian?? What? And he wasn't a washed up academic because he wrote the paper. he left that life voluntarily because he didn't want to deal with the hostility. It was a character trait of his that is a big part of the book. What have you guys been reading??

Loved 99.9% of the book. But that was a bitter pill to swallow when he turned out to be a coward. It just didnt fit his personality, his id. Maybe I'm being unrealistic. I put myself in his shoes and I'd like to think I would accept.
