I rarely comment on RUclips, but I owe it to Andy Weir and Ray Porter to make this comment. I agree with others that the audiobook is excellent, I’ve listened to it at least three times already and will probably do so many times before the film is released. I also listened to The Martian many times before that film was released. In my opinion the changes made from book-to-film were understandable and necessary in some respects. I can watch it and it takes nothing away from enjoying either medium. Read Project Hail Mary, you will only enjoy the movie more.

I listened to the story in the car on my way to and from work for an hour each way and found myself not wanting to inside when I reached my destination! It’s that good and the story just sucks you in! I believe it will be difficult to get all the essential parts into the film from the story so I believe it’s essential to understand all the components of the story beforehand. Just my 2 cents!

I got the book for my mom for Christmas and she finished it within a week. She mostly heard my brother's voice for the majority of the book, as he has that style of humor, but there was one scene where she understood why Ryan Gosling was chosen. So, up to you to read or watch first. My mom and brothers read The Martian before watching the movie, and we all enjoyed it. If Project Hail Mary is done the same way, it wouldn't matter if you read or watched it first.

I read The Martian a few years after watching the movie and it was a blast, because while I remembered the overall story and specific moments here and there, I had forgotten enough that the movie wasn't overshadowing the reading experience. The book impressed me so much that I immediately jumped to Project Hail Mary, which I also liked quite a bit. I then read Artemis, which wasn't as good as either, but still enjoyable, and I think could make a good movie as well. The team behind PHM is pretty strong, so I have high hopes for another great Weir adaptation.

I read the book as soon as I heard it was coming to the screen, so I wouldn’t be disappointed by necessary changes in the adaptation. . So glad I did! It was fabulous. I would highly recommend reading before seeing the film. Just sooner rather than later. Years ago, I finished the last pages of “Hunt for Red October” in the theater parking lot. I hated the film because so much that was fresh in my mind was changed or deleted. But with nearly two years to go, I will be able to enjoy this adaptation. I will even have time to re-read it. .

In this case, the story takes some unexpected turns, and I love how they unfold in the book. You may not get the same experience out of a movie because they will definitely have to make a lot of concessions to keep movie viewers engaged. There are some huge differences between the book and movie versions of The Martian, for example. But both are excellent in their own ways! I read the audio version of Hail Mary and really enjoyed it. I've just finished the book today, and enjoyed it very much. Looking forward to the movie adaptation, in hopes that it wouldn't dissapoint. I'd recommend reading first, because the amount of details and scientific stuff there was uncredible, and I believe they'll have to cut a lot of it for the movie. So I'd definitely want to have the full background in case the script takes a leap too big while cutting some stuff out, and ends up creating holes or parts that aren't comprehensive. The adaptation the "The Martian" was good, so I hope they do this book justice as well. I'm glad to hear that such a talented cinematographer is involved, the visual aspect is going to be very important in this movie, even though a lot of it will probably be CGI (space and alien planets). Thanks for the video!

As numberman2000 says Ray porter does a great job conveying Ryland Grace as a tenacious and capable protagonist. I know people usually focus on the stars and director, but I’ve started noticing the names in the credits of some movies I really liked (The Martian, Dune 1 & 2, Blade Runner 2049). I was excited to see that many of these visually stunning films were partly shot in Hungary with Hungarian crews involved. It’s cool to think that while cost is a big factor, talented crews from all over the world, like those in Hungary, help make these movies run smoothly and look fantastic.
On the book vs. movies debate, I vote for the book first. After all, the source comes first, and then we’ll see if the movie did it justice.

I'd suggest you first watch the film, then 24/7 read the book to finish it in time to watch the movie a second time and *_then_* tell us whether it's worth watching or not. So you better speed up bc I *_also_* wanna watch it in the cinema!! 😛

I would read the book, it’s definitely very well written, I think it would not be too hard to adapt into a film, and I always enjoy seeing how close my imagination while reading the book matches what they actually put into a film.

Read it. It's so good. I really dug it. I hope that cinematographer works in Rendezvous with Rama. I was excited to see Villenueve was attached. This guy would make it look amazing.

I’d recommend reading the book first. This is based in part by the way in which “The Martian” was converted, but also because the book is so damn good.

I try to read the book before seeing the movie. I've been doing it that way since Alien and the Shining. More recently with The Expanse. I enjoy seeing how writers change characters/dialogue... entire scenes and how my own thoughts interpret what I've read and imagined vs. whats on the screen.

As a reader of science fiction for 55+ years I recommend that you read the book before the movie. I prefer reading to listening mostly because I read at about 1200 words per minute and audio books take a lot longer to get through. I do understand why some people prefer listening to reading and I am glad they can find some way to experience books. Weir's titles ordered by my preference. The Martian. Artemis. Project Hail Mary.

Oooooh, looking forward to this! I have read the book and I thought it very original and a brave move to depict a truly alien species with it's toxic atmosphere requirements and the issues with communication, this film could be awesome. Hope it matches up to my expectations and no, don't read the book as it is invariably a distraction watching a film when you know the book so well. Read the book later.

The real advantage of reading the book before seeing the movie is that you're not waiting on some producer or financer to decide that, well, yeah we got it recorded, but we can't afford the SFX, or the editing, or the foley work or.. or.. or.. well, we really don't think the audience is going to enjoy the movie because someone watching the dailies fell asleep because it didn't have enough explosions or lasers, or ...
If you read the book, especially with this level of lead time, you get to enjoy the story as the writer crafted it, or the reader presented it (for the audio version) and if the movie makes it to it's release date, you get to see what the director and producers of the movie made of the story as well. The variation isn't a bad thing, it just means you get to learn how someone else saw a story you've learned.

The book is really good, but I get wanting to wait, too, and for the same reasons you stated for Dune Pt. 2. I read The Martian after seeing the film, but I enjoyed it so much that I then went and read Project Hail Mary. However, there's almost always more to the story in the book than in the movie, so I tend to enjoy the movie more if I see it before I read the book. I'm hoping they do as good of a job adapting this as they did with The Martian.

Happy this movie is being made, a no braining for good story. Just turned back on my computer to make this comment. As normal watch RUclips on my TV so making comments harder. YES I would suggest reading book before movie. Not sure if you did the same before The Martian. In this movie there are elements that is not translate well or were cut. Project Hail Mary LOVE the audio book and yes Ray Porter is great narrator. But again audio book has to change elements "To accommodate this audio edition, some changes to the original text have been made with the approval of author Andy Weir." And this is why I suggest reading book or listening to audio book. As these same elements ARE going to be changed for movie FOR SURE and I can see others being cut for pacing of movie like they did in The Martian movie vs. book. Yes I am being a little cryptic but you will see why I HOPE.

I'd recommend reading the book. I'm a "book is always better" guy. (The one exception to the rule was "E.T. the Extraterrestrial" (1982). I read the book (very) soon after published, and quite enjoyed it. And I'd be willing to bet "spoilers" will leak. (No matter how true to the book they navigate.)
As always, thank you so very much for the videos.
Knowing what I know, I'm still looking forward to seeing how they translate it to the screen.

I read the book shortly after it came out as I love Andy’s writing. (BTW, he did have one book in between called Artemis, about a station on the moon which featured a female protagonist.)
That being said, I’m slightly anxious how they will handle some things in the movie that were kinda staples in the book. In your position, I would probably wait for the movie at this point and read the book after. But maybe you don’t have a reading pile like mine. 😉

I read The Ruins when I was stationed in Iraq and then bought a bootleg dvd of the movie. Book was better.
I also saw GoT before reading ASOIAF. Books, at least the finished ones, are better.
I don't know about if it's better to read/see first but I think seeing the film/tv adaptation first makes it more interesting. Because when you read the book, you get all the extra stuff books can offer to character perspectives that few films have come close to. That is, depending on how faithful the film adaptation is. The more faithful it is the better the experience it is for me when reading the book because essentially the same thing happens but with more perspective.
But then again, seeing what books can't show is cool too. But I like the expansion on character perspectives more. As an example, I heard a lot of people complain about the monologuing in Sin City when it came out. I loved it. That's a TL;DR explanation for you 😄

Great book, love the casting. Really looking forward to this one. Also the narrator of the audiobook added another dimension to the book, def recommend checking out the audiobook. I'd say if the movie were to come out this year, maybe hold off and read it after the movie. But not til March 2026? That's too long for a book this good to go unread

Who provides the computer translated voice of the spider-like alien? There are two main characters in the book... the human reluctant primary school physics teacher and physicist astronaut, and the spider-like alien engineer astronaut (last of his crew). Both are out there to study the star feeding anomaly, and how to come up with a solution working together from the discovery stemming from their study to save both of their worlds and people (while developing an inter-species friendship, as they work together and learn about each other's species). Oh yes, read the book!
